from nbc news, this is "today" with peter alexander and laura jarrett, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today," we thank you for waking up with us on this saturday morning. big things happening down under. madison keys, what a win proves good things happen to good people. her time, her trophy. wrapping up a few minutes ago. >> so awesome. she had come close before, 29 years old. this is her day. >> no doubt, we'll be celebrating her in a bit. >> congratulations to her. we have a lot to get to this saturday morning, including when are we finally getting out of the cold. it has been an absolutely brutal week for so many with the polar vortex bringing ice, cold air, temperatures plunges, and several states saw snow for the first time in so many years. we are tracking a welcome

warmup. we want to begin with the breaking news, another hostage exchange between israel and hamas. the latest in the fragile cease fire agreement. this time four female israeli soldiers all of whom were captured in the october 7th attack more than 15 months ago, they are back in israel. nbc's daniele hamamdjian is live in tel aviv this morning with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. this is day seven of the cease fire, and you're right, four more hostages are now back in israel. until the in the past few hours, we saw a large presence of hamas fighters gathered at gaza city, clearly a show of force, claiming they have killed 20,000 hamas operatives in the past 15 months. the four hostages, all four female soldiers were brought on a stage wearing what appeared to be military uniforms. they appeared well.

they waved to the crowds, at times ev smiling. and then they were handed over to the red cross, followed by israeli forces. there was no sense of chaos from the images coming out. it all looked, in fact, quite choreographed, a surreal emotional moment for the people gathered here at hostage square in tel aviv. the four women, peter are daniella gilboa, naama levy, karina ariev and liri albag. nbc news was the only international media at the home today. our colleague raf sanchez was there. he says that they were watching nervously the screen the moment she came ouch the car, they just burst into tears. the mother later calling, moments later from the gaza border to say that she was finally free and back in israel. all four were part of a surveillance unit at the military base. and their job was to monitor the

gaza border. and some might remember in video from october 7th showing, in fact, naama levy being pulled out of a jeep. and in the months prior to october 7th, these women had reported to their superiors that they had noticed unusual activity at the border. they told their superiors that they saw hamas training. their family members later telling the media that those warnings were completely ignored. now there will be of course a medical assessment, an initial assessment. they will be reunited with their families and exchange for those four hostages, israel has released 200 palestinian prisoners. among them, 121 serving life sentences. some of them we have just been told minutes ago have already started to arrive in ramallah in the west bank, but many of them won't be released either in the west bank or gaza. they will be deported to a third

country, guys. >> that breaking news happening in the last several hours. we appreciate that reporting. any sense when the american hostages may be released? >> reporter: yeah, we're told by two senior officials that the first american is going to be keith siegel who's in his mid-60s. we're expecting to see him next saturday around this time for the third round of swaps for hostages for prisoners. >> daniele hamamdjian in tel aviv. thank you so much. also this morning, president trump is celebrating a razor thin victory. his controversial pick to head up the defense departnt. pete hegseth has been confirmed thanks to a late night rare tie breaking vote by his vice president j.d. vance. nbc white house correspondent yamiche alcindor is in las vegas traveling with president trump. yamiche, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, last night the senate narrowly voted to confirm pete hegseth as the new defense secretary. vice president j.d. vance had to cast a tie breaking vote. when lawmakers deadlocked 50-50.

it was the second time in history, a cabinet vote needed a tie breaker. vance stepped in after mitch mcconnell and two other republican senators, lisa murkowski and susan collins voted against the nomination. president trump celebrating the confirmation. >> i'm honored to have pete. i think pete is going to be a great secretary of defense. i didn't know that. i just heard that we won. winning is what matters, right? >> reporter: hegseth got the job despite a number of controversies, including allegations of alcohol abuse, domestic violence, a sexual assault and the financial mismanagement of organizations that he led. hegseth repeatedly denied all of these allegations. meanwhile, president trump has a number of other nominees that still need to make it through the senate with hearings for rfk jr., kash patel, and tulsi gabbard set for next week. gabbard, trump's pick for director of national intelligence has possibly the

toughest road ahead. she has never worked in the intelligence world and has been accused of amplifying russian propaganda. and today, president trump is here in las vegas for an event focused on the economy, and this could mimic taxes on tips . >> yamiche alcindor, thank you so much. >> the prosecute is enforcing an immigration crackdown. we have seen a series of roads and u.s. troops just arrived at the border this week. nbc's priya sridhar is there near the texas/mexico border with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: that's right, the pentagon has already begun deploying 1,500 active duty troops, 500 marines and a thousand soldiers to join the 2,500 national guardsmen and reserve forces who were already deployed along the border. the troops are assisting in the destruction of permanent and temporary barriers to stop illegal crossings. there arare plans to use intelligence analysts to monitor

the detection of migrants. military aircraft being used to assist the security and deportation flights of 5,000 detainees from here in el paso and also in san diego. we have already seen a few planes land here in el paso in the last few days carrying troops, and we also saw the first of those military aircraft take detainees back to guatemala on thursday. we're also hearing that across the border from where i am over in mexico, large tent like structures are being enacted as that country prepares for an influx of mexican nationals who could be deported from the united states back to mexico in the coming days. pete peter. >> ramping up the round ups of undocumented immigrants. what more can you tell us about those? >> we have heard about a number of i.c.e. raids that have been conducted in american cities across the country, include ing buffalo, new york, chicago, san francisco, and atlanta. we know ice made 592 arrests

yesterday. just to put it in context here, we know back in september, i.c.e. was making an average of 282 arrests per day. so this is a significant increase from what we were seeing just a few months ago. one of the most notable raileds that occurred over the last few days took place in newark, new jersey, yesterday, at a restaurant where at least three people were detained. local officials there slamming the trump administration saying that that raid was conducted without a warrant, and saying that at one point, an american citizen who also happens to be a u.s. veteran was detained and asked for his identification. peter. >> priya sridhar on the ground near the texas/mexico border right now. thank you. to the latest on the disaster response in southern california. president trump spent part of friday touring those fire ravaged communities and pushing for major changes in our nation's disaster response. nbc's steve patterson is in pacific palisades, california, for us this morning. steve, good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning, as you mentioned, the

president arriving to los angeles greeted by governor newsome after heavily repeatedly criticizing state leadership for their response to the wildfires. the president putting new stipulations on providing including requiring voter i.d. laws and for california to pump more water. the governor responding to that saying that the water pumping policy in california hasn't really changed since the president's first term in office, and that other states don't require voter i.d. meanwhile, earlier, the president was in north carolina, heavily criticizing fema for what he describes as a sluggish response to the huhurricane the. even floating the idea of possibly abolishing the agency entirely. here's what he said. >> frankly, fema is not good. fema has turned out to be a disaster. i think we're going to recommend that fema go away. >> reporter: in order to shut down fema, it would require congressional approval. the president floating the idea of possibly signing an executive order that will look into fema

and make recommended changes. meanwhile, back here in california, firefighters say they have the upper hand on most of the major fires burning in the area but there is rain in the forecast, so berms and baiers have been set up around those burn scars to try to prevent any toxic runoff from flowing into waterways, as the threat of mud slides here grows even larger. back to you, laura. >> last thing they need. let's get a check on the forecast for rain in southern california. angie lassman is attending a weather conference in steamboa springs, colorado. good gig, an lee.gie. let's talk about the rain. you don't want too much to cause mud slides, but want enough to put out the fires that remain. >> it's going to alleviate the difficulty that the firefighters have had over the past couple of weeks, peter and laura, good morning to you. i'm in steamboat springs. it's snowing here.

this is the storm system that's going to offer releech to our friends in california. there's a low pressure area that's going to spin the rain to the coast. the timing, tonight into monday afternoon. this is going to give us a good dosing of rain. we have multiple inches, up to 2 inches in the wettest locations and a foot of snow is possible in the highest locations in the mountains. our biggest concern. the burn scar threat. with the high rainfall rates, we know debris flows are going to be a difficult thing folks will have to deal with across the region. notice the fires since june across the area. we'll watch for localized flooding. the flash flood through santa barbara and mission viejo, include k the los angeles area. as we get into tomorrow, more of the same. this is going to last through monday. we'll get beneficial rain for our friends across the region. the potential for flash flooding will last for folks in the area. i'll send it back over to you guys. >> thank you. we'll get a national forecast from you in a few minutes. in other news this morning, the u.s. supreme court agreed

friday to take up a major case testing the boundary line on religion in our nation's public schools. the justices will review a decision by oklahoma's highest court finding that a proposed religious charter school violated both the u.s. and state constitution by using public money to establish a religious institution. now, backers of the school hope the u.s.s. supreme court will intervene to give parents new choices when it comes to exercising their religious freedom. american tennis fans have plenty of reason to celebrate this morning. florida's madison keys won her first grand slam title, upsetting sabalenka, this was a nail biter, to top the two-time defending champ in three sets. watch. >> at long last, it's madison keys, major moment. >> major moment is right, the 29-year-old american raising her arms in triumph, then quickly

ceremony officially opened the mercado reception center yesterday in santa clara count the nonprofit group home first was there for the celebration. the shelter is located on little orchard street in san jose, about a mile from the santa clara county fairgrounds. it will now offer beds, meals and supportive services to 250 adults each night. the updates on the shelter floor, including those privacy screens and sleeping areas. those entrance walls and bathrooms, are more than just structural improvements. they are steps toward increase respect and dignity for the people that stay here at the prc. the group home first says a $150,000 donation funded the renovation, which is what the nonprofit group calls a better overall experience. staying in the south bay. the search is underway for more people involved in an armed robbery near a sunnyvale elementary school. it happened

coming. >> you might want to buckle up. >> we are back on a saturday morning. january 25th, 2025. and that is, of course, vin diesel in the 2023 movie, fast ten, from our sister company universal pictures. now the action star has some big news about the next edition of the fast and furious franchise, in the wake of the l.a. wildfires. we'll have more on that ahead this morning on "popstart." buckle up, let's do it. let's begin this half hour with a check of your headlines. president trump on friday night, firing at least a dozen inspector generals. those are the internal watchdogs who monitor federal agencies. that's according to "the washington post" and the "new york times." the dismissals could violate federal law as the inspector generals are confirmed by the senate, and any dismissals typically require 30 days notice to congress. the firings are some of the largest government agencies coming in some of the largest government agencies, including the department of defense. this is all according to the

post. nbc news has not independently confirmed the firings. the government reports the flu is on the rise across the country with emergency room visits up more than 5%. the centers for disease control released the data despite the trump administration's halt of all scientific communication coming from federal health agencies. however, the flu information did not provide key details normally reported like specifics on flu strains and weather antiviral medications can still treat them. more good sports news, amber glenn won her second straight u.s. figure skating title in wichita, kansas, friday night. glenn's powerful free skate program helped her edge past alyssa liu for the gold. you can watch more of the figure skating championships, including the men's and pairs competitions this weekend on nbc and peacock. also this morning, new developments in the case of those four college students murdered in idaho. attorneys for the suspect are

fighting to have critical evidence in that case tossed out before it even gets to a trial. nbc's camila bernal is live with the story. >> reporter: we are learning new details in this case, the defense filing numerous motions questioning how investigators connected dna found at the scene back to kohberger and whether proper warrants were used. as bryan kohberger's high stakes trial approaches, a warning from the judge during the latest motion hearings. >> don't feel like your job is done at this point. i would suggest to you it's not. >> reporter: kohberger has plead the not guilty to the charges of first-degree murder for the deaths of university of idaho students xana kernodle, ethan chapin, mad ison mogen and kay

kay. >> our position is this work was not done lawfully. >> the state confident in law enforcement's tactics. >> we're not just talking about his dna happened to be found in a dresser drawer or something. it was found on a knife sheathe where four people were killed by a knife. this is as crime scene as it gets. >> reporter: the defense also arguing that dna was collected in a way that violated kohberger's rights. the judge was unpersuaded. >> when there's a dna match between the dna and sheathe and mr. oberger, isn't that probable cause every day and twice on sunday. >> the defense approaching this case appears to be throw everything you can up against the wall and see what sticks. >> reporter: meanwhile, the families o.f the victims unable to attend this week's closed hearings say they are hoping for

scenes as these your young women, all of them 19 and 20 years old were reunited with their families. they are now back safely at this hospital. we can hear that helicopter beginning to gear up behind me. and while this cease fire is holding, six days in, israel releasing some 200 palestinian prisoners, some of them serving long sentences in exchange for those four soldiers. israel is saying that hamas violated the cease fire agreement because there is still at least one living israeli female civilian inside gaza who should have been freed by now. prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying that until she is released, israel will not allow palestinian civilians to return to their homes in the ruins of northern gaza, and that is raising real questions about whether this cease fire deal will hold. laura.

that is going to do it for us thanks for joining us on this saturday, january 25th. i'm kira klapper. the largest homeless shelter in the south bay is now open and welcoming those in need. the ribbon cutting ceremony officially opened the reception center yesterday in santa clara county. the nonprofit group home first held the ceremony. the shelter is located on little orchard street in san jose, about a mile away from the santa clara county fairgrounds. it will now offer beds,eals and supportive services to 250 adults every night. updates on the shelter floor, including those privacy screens and sleeping areas. those entrance walls and
