"early today" starts right now. glad you're with me this morning. i'm frances rivera. breaking news. a showdown between colombia and united states appears to be settled. the white house says colombia has agreed to accept deportation flights from the u.s., including on military aircraft. president trump had threatened 25% tariffs on colombia after their president blocked two military flights. the white house says the threatened tariffs and sanctions will be held in reserve and not signed unless colombia fails to honor this agreement. for its part, colombia says it will guarantee deportees decent conditions and that the country's foreign minister will travel to washington in the coming days to meet about the agreement. the trump administration's immigration crackdown ramped up over the weekend with i.c.e. announcing it made 956 arrests yesterday.

gabe gutierrez is tracking the effort. >> reporter: president trump's crackdown on illegal immigration is expanding. not just i.c.e. officers but other federal law enforcement agencies sweeping across the country. in colorado, targeting the venezuelan gang making nearly 50 arrests. and, the "washington post" citing four people, that quotas have been set nationwide. is that what you're hoping for? >> that's what we want to get, as many criminals as possible. so there's no number on it. >> reporter: tom homan is trump's border czar, he's in chicago overseeing a major operation even as the deportations spark international backlash. colombia's president turning away two u.s. aircraft saying a migrant is not a criminal and should be treated with the dignity a human being deserves. at the u.s. border, more troops

arrive. the biden administration also arrested hundreds of migrants a day, but so far, the numbers under trumump are higher. the start of what the white house calls an unprecedented mass deportation campaign. one change i.c.e. agents now allowed to make arrests in sensitive locations, like schools and churches. do you plan under certain circumstances to go into churches and schools at some point? >> i will never say never. if there's a national security threat that we know is in a certain place on a college campus, we're going to get that national security threat. >> reporter: here in chicago, immigrant communities are on edge. this one holding a workshop about several rights. this asylum seeker from venezuela now worried about her future. [speaking in a global language] many people are fearful, she says. that's why they're not leaving their homes. >> and our thanks to gabe for house speaker mike johnson has invited president trump to speak to congress. in a letter, he asks president trump to address both chambers

of congress on march 4th to share his america first vision for the country. this would mark the president's first joint address to congress of this term. the first major crisis of the cease-fire between israel and hamas now easing up. qatar announced an agreement has been reached to release an israeli hostage and allow palestinians to turn to northern gaza. president trump suggested egypt and jordan should be among the countries to accept more refugees, adding palestinians should leave the gaza strip to quote, just clean out thathole thing. joining me is claudio lavanga. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frances. that's right. israel over the weekend has accused hamas of violating the cease-fire after arbel was not released last saturday as agreed. and, as a consequence stopped hundreds of thousands of palestinians from returning to

the north of gaza. now this morning, hamas has just issued a statement saying that arbel will be released, alongside two other hostages before friday, in addition to three other hostages who will be released on saturday as part of the original cease-fire agreement. with her return, israel would allow palestinians to return to their homes in the north of gaza, or what is left of it. in the meantime, president trump has sent shockwaves around the world when he suggested that up to 1.5 million, 1.5 million palestinians, pretty much all of the population in gaza, should be resettled, relocated to other countries like egypt or jordan, in order to, and i quote, clean out the enclave. now that proposal was rejected without outrage by egypt, jordan, and of course the palestinians who fear that if they did, that the palestinians may never be allowed to return home.

frances? >> claudio, thank you. new this morning, the u.s. air force says it will keep using a training video featuring the all-black tuskegee airmen along with a video about women pilots and world war ii. both films were stopped pending review to see if they were in compliance with president trump's anti-dei plan. mr. trump and pete hegseth have pledged to purge the military of diversity, equity and inclusion movement. several people were injured after a car drove through a crowd in north philadelphia, police say. it happened as people were celebrating the victory over the commanders. a suspect is in custody. their identity has not been released, and it's not clear what charges they could face. the crash does not appear to have been intentional. in los angeles, a storm is

threatening flooding and mudslides in areas already hit hard by this year's wildfires. residents weredvised to take precautions with several locations handing out free sandbags. christian cakhazares has more. >> reporter: it's a race against the clock for families like the vaughans of altadena, who say they have lost everything, including their home, in the eaton fire. >> my house burned down. and right now we're going to go present my grandmother's house above altadena drive. >> reporter: but now they brace for another punch from mother nature as a storm is expected to pass across southern california. >> if we have water damage, that just adds another situation on top of already what we're going through. >> reporter: on friday, california through cal oes, mobilized more than 400 personnel to protect the watershed mission station. the staging sites holding over

400,000 feet of k rail, and more is on the way. >> the purpose of k rail is to try to deter mud from reaching infrastructure. we can guide it or even contain it a bit. >> reporter: pasadena's mayor says it's been one of the hardest moments the city has ever seen as the eaton fire ravaged most of the altadena community. now the rain poses yet another risk. >> mud and debris flow can travel faster than you can run. there can be numerous materials that can be dangerous or deadly. an example is trees and cars and other material that can, that can severely injure or kill you. >> reporter: this family is hoping for the best while preparing for the worst. >> this is just a little bit. there's more work we have to do by adding wood, plywood to keep the doors shut. >> and our thanks to christian khazares for that report. that storm system isn't moving

we are back with a consumer alert. egg prices are soaring with the average price of a dozen jumping from about $3.30 to $4. now it's not unheard of for a dozen eggs to go for as much as $12. according to the latest usda egg markets overview, more than 14 million birds have been lost since december. now to the surge in human flu cases across the country. and the fear that some hospitals may not be able to handle the influx of patients. nbc's marissa parra has the details. >> reporter: a rising number of americans are feeling the fury of the flu. >> me and my husband have had a 101 fever for three days.

>> reporter: cdc data this month reports over 6600 flu deaths and 160,000 hospitalizations. covid cases are down. here's why. doctors say covid strains for the most part have become less severe overtime. and this year, covid peaked most recently in august. >> covid is milder this year with about half the rate of hospitalizations now than exactly a year ago. >> reporter: but the flu always peaks in the winter. spreading more easily this season with the combination of lower flu vaccination rates, record travel, a bitter cold winter season, driving people indoors together, with little competition this season from covid-19. the cia made a big switch on their previous covid assessment, and just days after president trump's cia chief took his post. the agency saying they believe with low confidence that the pandemic's origin was more likely a chinese lab leak and
