the next system that's going to be coming in on friday. as of now, we've been focused on socal getting some much needed rain there, as well as snow in the higher elevations. but we know that for some of those burn scar areas, the ground is still very unstable. and as we get some pockets of heavy rain coming in, there's the potential of some mudslides today. so we're watching out for that possibility. we have already seen some bouts of heavy rain as well as some thunderstorms. but looking here close to home, we've started out near or even below freezing. check out danville and livermore 28 degrees. it is very cold to start in a lot of our bay area microclimates, mainly for the inland areas. and then as we check out mountain view, we're just a couple of degrees above freezing at 7:00. at 9:00 we see the temperatures jump into the mid 40s and then upper 50s throughout the day. with that sunshine. it's going to be a nice one and some of us will make it into the 60s this afternoon. we're headed for 62

in concord and martinez and 64 in santa rosa. and this weather days with a cold morning start and temperatures reaching into the low 60s. here's the rain that we've been talking about coming in on friday. it's not looking like a really significant storm system. it will bring us some scattered showers off and on as it moves through, but the north bay could see the highest rainfall totals. and there's the possibility that between friday and sunday we may see some of these areas shaded in red, picking up on about 1 to 2in of rainfall, and it may be much heavier farther to the north. but san jose, we're barely going to get anything here. maybe a few hundredths of an inch of rain. we'll be watching that as we go throughout the week, but looking at our 7-day forecast, we are mostly sunny in the forecast through thursday. and mike, you're still tracking a crash on the bay bridge. yeah, i'm watching some flashing lights. look at this shot here from emeryville folks. you can see, oh, just at the edge of the

then seeing highs in the low 60s here today. it's going to shape up to be a nice one and temperatures dropping again later this evening. looking at our highs for today, 60 in dublin and 62 in fairfield, as well as novato and napa and 64 in santa rosa. that's one of the warmer spots. we'll talk about rain ahead in our forecast in a few minutes. but, mike, it's still extra slow across the bay bridge. but what's ahead for folks leaving oakland is a slow drive across. we still see some flashing lights right here, although i'm told that the lanes are clear from the earlier crash on the span. there may be more activity getting close to the fremont exit that would restrict more traffic flow across. now, some folks may head north to the richmond bridge as an alternate. you see, the volume is starting to move better. i just saw these flashing lights a tow truck arrive, so that might be related to the clearing of the crash just past the toll plaza. but there's both of your westbound drives off the east shore freeway. both are slow this morning. right now. and now the build up westbound across the san mateo bridge, which might be

some folks alternate, not likely, but still could potentially shift some traffic. everything else showing pretty typical patterns at 8680 off of 580 itself. and the alameda on ramp is open now. one lane is open. there's some flooding, some standing water as you get on to south 80. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. 642 right now. athletes and coaches left in limbo as sonoma state announces it will cut all athletics programs next. the new legal action they're ready to take and the kickoff for the 2026 fifa world cup is 500 days away. everything you need to know about how the bay area is getting ready for the biggest sporti dave's been very excited about saving big

athletics program continues with a lawsuit which could find its way to federal court. this after the school announced it is cutting its entire sports program. today in the bay ginger conejero saab live for us now this morning. okay, so, ginger, many of those students and staff, which i can imagine are still in shock here. that's right, marcus. and not just because sonoma state announced that it's cutting its entire sports program, but because of how and when they found out, just like the head coach of the men's soccer program, marcus ziemer. now, he grew up in rohnert park and has either been coaching or playing at sonoma state for the past almost 40

years. he's played three years as a player and 36 years as a coach. now, he says he couldn't believe the email he was reading last week, telling him that he needs to find a new job in june. i broke down. i mean, it's just super emotional. i you don't know how hard i've worked for this program. and just to find out from a student that i'm, you know, i'm done. it was pretty heart wrenching. ziemer is not the only one stunned by the announcement. as you mentioned, marcus, coaches and student athletes say they feel like they're pawns. after learning of sonoma state's move two days after students pay tuition, housing and other fees at the university. student athletes are looking to take action in a civil rights lawsuit that could be filed in federal court here in the city as early as today. lawyers for the student athletes claim that meeting and transparency laws were violated when decisions to make the cuts were made and voted on. now they will try to get the court to stop these cuts immediately.

sonoma state has not responded to requests for comment at this time, but they have said that they will save $2 million annually in cutting all 12 of their athletics programs. the university seems to have become an unexpected opponent for these student athletes. marcus, and it seems like the face off will happen now in court in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. yeah, so tough for many of them who just were looking so forward to playing in that sport. so we will see what happens after this. all right. thanks, ginger. well the super bowl is now set and the kansas city chiefs have a date with history. the question is will philadelphia eagles swoop in to end that dream in the afc championship. the chiefs yesterday beat buffalo to clinch their third straight trip to the super bowl and their sixth trip in seven seasons. the game was a thriller. the chiefs kicked a late field goal to break a 2929 tie. a fourth down heave by josh allen came up just short. the

chiefs won it 32 to 29. in the nfc championship, the philadelphia eagles manhandled the upstart washington commanders on the eagles first offensive play. saquon barkley ran for a long touchdown there. the eagles would score a postseason record tying seven rushing touchdowns as they beat the commanders 55 to 23. okay, so here you have it. 13 days from now in new orleans. the chiefs will play the eagles in super bowl 59. if the chiefs win it. this would be the first team to ever win three straight super bowls. so get your chips and salsa ready. let's go. all right well speaking of sports let's talk about the world's largest major soccer event. it will be bigger thanver when it begins exactly 500 days from now. we're celebrating the 2026 world cup, which is the u.s, mexico and canada all hosting this event. and guess who's here? carlos eustis with our sister station, telemundo 48 joins us this morning. levi's stadium carlos
6:50 am
will host a total of six games. that's exciting. that is correct. well, as you said, there's we're 500 days away from the 2026 fifa world cup kickoff, and the global soccer tournament will be celebrating its 23rd edition. the first one, with 48 teams, will be distributed throughout 16 cities. and as you ntioned, one of them is the bay area. that's why levi's has already started its preparations to host the event. however, these upgrades have to be done particularly fast since levi's will be hosting super bowl 60 next february. among the pressing changes, the 49ers home needs to modify the field. while it's true that the playing surface is in top shape, the playing area is too narrow for fifa standards, and the space between the field and the seats is not within the parameters established by fifa. so you have an idea. the field at paypal park is significantly bigger than the one at levi's when it's in its soccer configuration. speaking of paypal, the san jose earthquakes stadium will be functioning as a practice center during the big event. before the world cup, teams will explore where to set up camps for their tournament, and the quakes facility will be the prime spot
6:51 am
for those teams having games not only in santa clara, but in nearby host cities. also, it is expected that the quakes will be ready to open their new training facility in santa clara fairgrounds site by the time the world cup comes around. there will also be a training site in alameda, where the oakland roots are, and also in treasure island. and these are the 16 host cities that will be hosting the world cup. and that's only in the united states. there's another three in mexico. so there's the three in mexico,he two in canada, and is the biggest soccer event ever. knowing that this was the last time in qatar in 2022 that it wass 32 teams. this will be the first time that we have 48 teams and also a lot more games, and all of them will be live on telemundo, which is perfect. a lot of games showed us that map. i'm just picturing how quickly you have to get from one site to the other. well, well, they're going to be it's going to be basically divided in clusters because that's one of the problems with this world cup. in general. the travel for the teams will be brutatal. if yo have to play from the east coast to the west coast, so most
6:52 am
likely there'll be a cluster of teams that will be stationed in the west coast. there's a cluster of teams that will be stationed in mexico, and then the ones on the east coast and then probably in the midwest, in texas, in these areas. so the travel is a little less brutal. all right. you're still working very hard always. can you imagine the vocal cords? go get them going. luckily, that's andres cantor's job. very good at it. so we get to follow along with him. yeah, it will be a lot of fun to follow. all right. thanks for getting up early this morning as well. good to have. you had to bundle up before you headed out the door, i bet. yeah. we do have a freezing temperatures even below freezing and a lot of our inland valleys. so it's starting out in the low 30s right now in san martin. and then look at the tri-valley in livermore. it is 28 as you're stepping out the door, and 28 in danville, but in concord, 34. so we're just above freezing there. a very chilly start. but then as we take a look at our highs for this afternoon, headed for 59 in livermore as well as in palo alto, oakland and san francisco, 60 today and 62 in napa and in

novato. and tomorrow is basically a repeat of today, where we see those temperatures heading back to the same spot after a cold start. it's been fairly dry and it will be dry throughout the week. it's not until friday when the next storm system comes in, starting out with some scattered showers. and for most of us, it's just going to be kind of off and on from friday into saturday, clearing out on sunday. but then looking at how much rain we're going to see, the north bay will be the focus for the highest rainfall totals from parts of sonoma county on northward. this is where we could see about 1 to 2in of rainfall. but notice how those rainfall totals drop off south of the golden gate bridge. san jose may barely measure anything maybe a quarter inch of rain or less. and then we're looking at some of the shadings in green. about a quarter to half inch of rainfall coming this weekend, and we're looking at a dry week ahead. cold teeratures for each morning through friday, and then looking at mostly sunny skies and

temperatures headed up to close to 60 degrees. and mike, it sounds like it's a tough commute into san francisco. the volume overall not so bad, but the flashing lights still there. look at that approaching harrison. i think there's still activity, despite the fact that chp said the crash on the span is cleared. still slow getting across into san francisco, slow from an earlier crash across the richmond bridge as well. coming off the east shore freeway westbound is a little tough. everything else looking pretty standard. more slowing through hayward toward the san mateo bridge. back to you. thank you very much, mike. well, happening now, embattled former san francisco school district superintendent matt wayne is being named the interim superintendent for antioch unified school district. according to thehe school board. trustees are expected to review and approve wayne's contract wednesday. wayne resigned from sf unified in october und pressure from parents, students and staff. they were upset about his proposal to close or merge 11 schools. those closures have since been put on hold.
