glad you're with me this morning. i'm frances rivera. overnight, the president addressed a gop policy retreat that will continue through tomorrow. the high-profile meetings are taking place at president trump's golf club just outside of miami. nbc's julie tsirkin kicks off our coverage. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: sworn into office one week ago, president donald trump is already huddling with republican lawmakers. selling them on the bold agenda he sold the american people. >> and deliver on the mandate that we've been given by the american people. >> reporter: house republicans meeting in south florida over the next three days. finding the votes to pass trump's plans and the cash to fund them. >> all around the country, something has changed, because there's new sheriff in town. >> reporter: funding the administration needs sooner than later. to pay for the nationwide crackdown on undocumented migrants. from newark, new jersey, to miami, florida.

federal law enforcement raiding homes and businesses, searching for migrants with criminal records, but detaining others, too. and in chicago, church groups are helping migrants understand their rights. >> we're trying to educate them and inform them of their rights. >> reporter: after colombia initially refused to accept military flights carrying deported migrants back to their home country, president trump threatened tariffs on colombian imports, putting the two countries on the brink of a trade war. but, on sunday, the white house claimed victory, after colombia's president accepted the migrants after all. and the president fired 18 inspectors general from various agencies over the weekend without giving congress 30 days notice as required by the law. >> technically, yeah. but he has the authority t to it. >> reporter: republican senator chuck grassley, part of the bipartisan push to bolster protections for government watchdogs called for, quote,

further explanation from president trump. >> our thanks to julie for that report. president trump has another cabinet member in place. the senate voted 68-29 to confirm scott bessant as treasury secretary, with 16 democrats joining the republicans. the hedge fund executive will now play a key role in enacting president trump's economic agenda. confirmation hearings will continue this week. wednesday senators will hear from health secretary nominee robert f. kennedy jr. and on thursday, hearings are set for tulsi gabbard and kash patel, who have been picked to lead the intelligence community and the fbi. an indiana man recently pardoned for the u.s. capitol riot has been shot to death by a sheriff's deputy. matthew huddle was involved in a traffic stop when he resisted arrest with a gun on him. the officer who shot him is placed on administrative leapen. he had been charged on entering

and remaining on restricted grounds on january 6, 2021. israel reopening roadblocks in gaza, allowing more than 650,000 displaced palestinians to journey home after 15 months of israeli bombardment. meanwhile, a source says hamas told israel that 8 of the 26 israeli hostages set to be released in the first part of the cease-fire are dead. let's bring in nbc's claudio lavanga for more. >> reporter: good morning, frances. well, if you look at those impressive images shot by a nbc news crew in gaza, it really looks like an exodus of biblical proportions with this river of hundreds of thousands heading back north to their homes. there were men, women, children of all ages dragging whatever belongings they had left with them. all committed to return to their houses, even though they must be

aware that they may not find it, because much, if not most of gaza, has been razed to the ground by 15 months of relentless bombing by israel. in the meantime, the cease-fire continues, of course, with the exchange of israeli hostages and palestinian prisoners resuming at the end of this week. but, at least, according to a middle eastern official familiar with the terms of the cease-fire agreement who spoke to nbc news, hamas has told israel that 8 of the remaining 26 hostages set to be released as part of phase one are dead. this is believ to be the first time hamas has revealed exactly the number of people, hostages dead and alive still in gaza. and that number has been somewhat confirmed unofficially by the spokesperson for prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who said that's pretty much the numbers that the intelligence officers in israel have as well,

frances. >> so heartbreaking for those families with so much hope. thank you. six people were hospitalized after a dramatic incident on a united airlines flight. the plane was headed from nigeria to washington, d.c. when passengers and crew went flying. some hitting the ceiling and being knocked unconscious. the pilot quickly announced they'd lost auto pilot and navigation and were returning to lagos. nigerian aviation authorities are investigating the incident. kansas is facing an unprecedented tuberculosis outbreak with 67 active cases and 79 latent cases since 2024. the majority the cases have been in wyandotte county. local health officials will working with the cdc to ensure patients are receiving proper treatment. and the death toll from this

year's wildfires in california has risen to 29. the l.a. county medical office says somebody had died from injuries sustained in the fire. three weeks after the inferno erupted, shock has given way to frustration for many who want to rebuild. >> reporter: as the shock of the los angeles fires wears off, for many, the daunting reality is settling in. >> overwhelming. >> reporter: and with that, mounting frustrations about the cleanup. after the u.s. army corps of engineers recently told residents it could take 18 months to clear the debris before owners begin to rebuild. that timeline leaving many families in limbo. >> it's not feasible. how are people going to live in that timeline? how do people's loss of use cover them when they're still paying mortgages and now paying rents on top of it. >> reporter: the governor says he's waiving permits for the california coastal commission.
