what led officers to open fire? federal aid freeze. the white house sparks new confusion by freezing all federal grants. we're live in washington with a fiery response from democrats in the wake of president trump's string of new executive orders. also, alameda county gearing up to appoint a new district attorney. the calls for transparency ahead of that key appointment. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you. on this tuesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that morning commute with mike, see how things are rolling out there. we know it's cold again. kari. yes. and some of the same temperatures. so once again we are going to have a frost advisory and a freeze warning for some spots in the south bay. but then looking at what to expect over the next several hours, even though we're already seeing some of those temperatures near or below freezing, we may dip another few degrees before sunrise. this morning. we are freezing in
5:02 am
livermore at 32 and below freezing in danville, while oakland is at 45. it's 33 in sonoma and 32 in santa rosa. and then once again, we're going to see more of the same temperatures that we've been seeing the past few days, highs in the upper 50s and low 60s, up to 57 in fremont, while san jose will see a high of 62, as well as 62, in santa rosa. no changes temperature wise, but eventually rain comes back, so we'll talk about that in theull microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. sounds good. thanks so much. kari. we do begin with an update on breaking news we first brought you last night at 11. the suspect in a san francisco police shooting has now died from his injuries. it happened a little before 5 p.m. near a pot dispensary at mission and ninth street, south of market. police say officers were actually responding to another shooting that left a man with life threatening injuries. after locating the suspect barricaded inside a building, they say he refused to comply
5:03 am
with orders to surrender. it's still not clear if the suspect fired at officers. police say the investigation is ongoing. new developments overnight and new confusion after the latest move by the white house budget office. it follows a flurry of new executive orders from president trump. there is also a meeting of house republicans in miami. this is to promote the president's agenda, which is already putting mass deportations front and center. today in the bay's alice barr is live for us in washington this morning. and alice. federal agents continue to ramp up on those immigration raids. good morning. yeah, we are now learning from ice that there were roughly 1200 arrestsn just a single day. and a trump administration official tells nbc news more than half of those did not have criminal records outside of being in this country illegally. so while that is ongoing and still ramping up, we're also digging into this federal aid freeze that the senate's top democrat said affects money congress already approved and would mean
5:04 am
everything from missed payrolls to rent payments next to you, president trump further testing the power of the pen with new executive orders and directives, including an internal memo. the white house office of management and budget sent overnight ordering federal agencies to freeze federal aid starting at 5:00 tonight, quote, including but not limited to, financial assistance for foreign aid, non-governmental organizations, da wilk gender ideology, and the green new deal, calling it a temporary pause to determine the best use of funding. top democrats responding, expressing, quote, extreme alarm about the administration's efforts to undermine congress's power of the purse, threaten our national security, and deny resources for states, localities, american families, and businesses. president trump celebrated his rapid fire executive actions at a house republican retreat at his miami golf club. my administration has
5:05 am
been moving with urgency and historic speed. one new batch of executive orders directed at the military could force out openly transgender troops. it ends the use of, quote, invented and identification based pronouns and prohibits males from sharing, sleeping, changing or bathing facilities for females. the president also reinstating service members, terminated over vaccine mandates and ordering the creation of a missile defense shield dubbed an american iron dome, while at the same time touting stepped up immigration enforcement and floating the idea of sending u.s. citizens who are repeat criminal offenders to prison in foreign countries. we're going to get approval, hopefully to get them the hell out of our country. the president calling it a cost saving measure. and in more new developments, the justice department revealed that it fired a number of career lawyers who worked on investigations into president trump, while the president also
5:06 am
removed more than a dozen inspectors general who serve as independent watchdogs at federal agencies without giving congress a required 30 day notice for those removals. marcus. all right. alice barr in washington this morning. alice. thank you. well, happening today, alameda county leaders will select a new district attorney. it follows the recall of pamela price last november. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live outside the east county hall of justice in dublin this morning. and bob, one group is asking the state attorney general, just stay out of it. yes. they're asking attorney general rob bonta. good morning, bonta. good morning to laura to reveal whether or not he has tried to influence the process and pressure the county to pick his preferred candidate. we'll have more on that in a little bit. but later this afternoon, the alameda county board of supervisors, they will meet and they will select from a from one of seven candidates to become the next district attorney whose office prosecutes, prosecutes cases not
5:07 am
only here at the east county hall of justice behind me, but at other courthouses throughout alameda county. last week, the board publicly interviewed the candidates, elgin lowe and jimmy wilson. they are the only internal candidates. lowe is a senior deputy district attorney and wilson is a deputy attorney. venus johnson is the chief deputy attorney general for california, and she's the one who has been endorsed by ag. rob bonta. latricia lewis is deputy counsel for alameda county, and ibn shen is the current city attorney for alameda. ursula jones dixon is an alameda county superior court judge, and annie esposito is contra costa county assistant district attorney. during a rally before last week's interviews, several crime victims and safe. the group responsible for recalling former da pamela price for not being tough enough on crime. they endorsed judge jones dixon and assistant da esposito. we want to make sure that they will not be replacing another problem
5:08 am
that we'll be dealing with again. and we also want to make sure that this is a right and fair process. we will build community trust with engagement and with complete transparency. we are at a critical juncture in our criminal justice system, one that demands bold leadership. my philosophy is persevere, strive for excellence and fairness, and maintain your compassion. that was some of the candidates for alameda county da giving their answers to the board during those public interviews last week. whoever the board picks today will take office next month and s serve through 2026. now, as i mentioned before today's s board mting, members of the community who are pushing for judge jones dixon and assistant da esposito, they're going to hold a press conference to pressure the supervisorsrs to reveal whether or not ag bonta and other associates have
5:09 am
ntacted the board to push for venus johnson to become da, who, again, is bonta's pick for the job. reporting live here in dublin bob redell. today in the bay. all right. thanks for the very latest, bob. 508 right now in southern california, nearly three weeks after the palisades fire first ignited, the last evacuation orders are finally being lifted for people in the fire zone. for now, only residents are allowed access to that area. la leaders are advising them to avoid staying in the area for extended periods of time, due to the volumes of toxic materials. also, slide debris from the recent rainfall is now blocking some roadways. as for altadena's eaton fire. southern california edison's power company is now examining recently discovered surveillance video appearing to show a shower of sparks in the same area where the eaton fire started. the video spot, shadowed here with an incorrect timestamp, was actually shot from a security camera at a gas station in pasadena. it was included as
5:10 am
part of a legal hearing yesterday, tied to dozens of lawsuits filed against socal edison in the wake of the fire. in a statement, socal edison says it's aware of the video and committed to a transparent process. 509 for you this morning. let's take a live look outside san jose, looking nice and beautiful, dark and early for us this morning. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking those cold temperatures as we start out the day. are we going to see a repeat of yesterday, though? yeah, basically it's going to settle into this pattern as we go into the next several days with cold mornings and mild afternoons. in fact, some of us are starting outn the 30s and a few spots even below freezing. in walnut creek, it is 38 degrees and about the same in san jose. but as we take a look at our temperature trend at noon, we're at 57. so that's quite a bit of a warm up as we head toward the low 60s again this afternoon, we will eventually see rain coming back to the bay area, so we'll talk about that timeline coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look
5:11 am
at some lower gas prices around the bay area, and we'll lead with the same south bay city. san jose leads our lows again today, still at 367, but this time a different location. we'll talk diamond gas and market on south winchester boulevard, just across the freeway from winchester, mystery house and marin county. the lowest by far is san anselmo, 3.77 at far osorto on sir francis drake. and the best for contra costa county is in concord 3.79 at bond fair market. the one on willow pass road. you go to gasbuddy.com to check your prices. we'll go to the south bay to track this crash. i've been following it since it happened at 315 this morning. there is a semi truck and a fuel leak, and that's going to have at least one lane blocked north. it's actually around the arrow just shy of hellyer. so watch the area. we see no slowing but there's still activity. because of that. fuel on the roadway will continue to track that as the commute will build over the next 20 minutes. east bay looking good. the arrow at the top eastbound 37, reopened after overnight road work and closures. back to you.
5:12 am
thanks, mike. 511 right now, if you're looking to start a new business, some say now is the perfect time. coming up on today in the bay, the new digital age means a lot of things to a lot of people. we'll hear from one expert who believes it may be especially fruitful for budding entrepreneurs. wall street rocked by that new chinese ai. that was yesterday. today's the day after. let's go out to the futures. looks like a much quieter day, but we'll go over all of it. you're watching

this morning in hayward. it's in the low 40s now, but we'll drop another few degrees before is nice and sunny with a gradual warm up, and we're headed close to 60 degrees here once again. we will eventually see rain coming back. we'll talk about when to expect it coming up in a few minutes, and we're looking at that volume of traffic headlights westbound into the dublin interchange coming out of the altamont pass. everything on 580 moves. well, there is a crash on grant line road off to the shoulder. just noting we're watching that whole area as things start to slow. we'll look in the north bay, see how 37 is shaping up. well, good morning and very happy tuesday to you. shares in santa clara's nvidia fell hard yesterday on the
5:16 am
popularity of a new chinese artificial intelligence. made people wonder if you really need nvidia chips to run an ai, ignoring perhaps a number of reports that the creators of deep seek had actually stockpiled nvidia chips before the u.s. restricted them one way or the other. trouble for nvidia, but also other chip companies like broadcom fell with it. you see the effect it had on the nasdaq index. and yet the dow did just fine. the dow industrials has just 30 companies on it. and when a company that's measured on both goes south, it can have a different effect because the two indices give different levels of importance to each company. take a look. the nasdaq index gives weight to a company's value. the market cap. the bigger the market cap, the more the stock can move the index. nvidia is worth nearly 3 trillion, so it syncs the nasdaq. the dow gives priority to a company's stock price. nvidia had a split recently. so that's not that
5:17 am
high. not compared to home depot. and that's why you get such an unusual spread between the dow and the nasdaq. at times deep sea really freaked out. a lot of people investors, ai researchers, chip companies, investor marc andreessen calls the new chinese ai a sputnik moment. somebody else called it chatgpt. she is it overblown? possibly. nvidia is trading higher in premarket. here's another issue, though. deep seek is the number one app in the app store. lawmakers who would like to keep us away from chinese apps like tiktok now have a new problem, though tiktok is much more opaque. deep seek is open source. you can look under the hood. speaking of investors and ai, linkedin founder turned investor reid hoffman led a multi-million dollar round of investment into researching drugs that will target cancer. they're going to start with breast cancer and prostate cancer. target the latest to say it's changing its policies over
5:18 am
diversity, equity and inclusion, reducing the number of products aimed toward certain groups, and ending a program that buys from black and minority owned businesses. look at the headquarters in minneapolis. local pride group there says target is uninvited to the next parade. the local paper, the star tribune, says some tget suppliers are rethinking their relationship with the big box store, and google has announced its maps will start calling that body of water west of florida, south of alabama, the gulf of america. it was president trump who directed the u.s. government to call it the gulf of america, not the gulf of mexico. and google says its policy is to use the names that governments use to label maps. so if washington calls it the gulf of america, so too does google. this is not a new controversy. the persian gulf, the iranians like to call it the persian gulf. that's true. the arabians like to call it the gulf of arabia. so
5:19 am
depending on where you are, that's what it shows up as. if you're in mexico, you are or who you are if you're in mexico, gulf of laura, the gulf of just peaceful. can't well get along? are other countries going to follow suit with this? it doesn't sound like it. no. yeah. all right. thanks, guys. you bet. new for you this morning. a new year means new beginnings. and it also turns out that it holds true to new beginnings as businesses as well. so here are some incentive for you if you're thinking of getting your business off the ground. experts at the online tech company legalzoom say that january is an ideal time. in fact, the first month of the newew year is when about 30% of all small businesses launch. by far the highest rate all year. and starting your own business is easier than ever, they say. if you look back to 2019 to now, we have very much become a virtual digital society and that has reduced the cost and made it much easier to start a business. experts say people are using
5:20 am
that to their advantage. they're 70% of them starting their businesses at home and reducing the cost of leasing office space. more than half are also taking less risk and starting their business while keeping their other job. experts say once you get your business going, make sure that you have your estate planning in order. this is for your business and heirs. make sure they're protected. side hustle i think a pretty good business to sell coats and jackets. and you know today would be a good day. warm hats? exactly. yeah. it's a cold start. once again. we're going to have more of these over the next few days. so we're kind of getting used to it. starting out below freezing in the tri-valley and the south county in south san jose. it's 33 degrees and 32 in sonoma as well as santa rosa, and we're at 42 in san mateo. but then when we take a look at our highs for today, we're back to what we've also seen in the afternoons, a gradual warm up that leads us to 60 in novato
5:21 am
and 59 in san francisco. oakland and martinez. and dublin will also be at 59 degrees. taking it to tomorrow, we notice that the numbers really don't change as much. and then we're also looking at the same on thursday as well, with a few more clouds coming in by friday, and that's going to lead us into our next chance of rain that will be coming through with an atmospheric river just to our north. we're kind of on the southern edge of that atmospheric river. now, we're not expecting a whole lot of rain for this, unless you're in the north bay. and then by early next week, we'll start to see this finally pushing to the south as rain chances continue into monday and tuesday. so look at the differences here. while san jose may not see much of anything, a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall, a lot of our models are picking up on the potential of a lot of heavy rain. once again for santa rosa. remember, this is what we saw in december with all of the heavy rain farther north. but then
5:22 am
when you go south of the golden gate bridge, there really wasn't a lot of rainfall. so we're looking at that same weather setup once again. and for the sierra, we're going to see a decent amount of snowfall, about 4 to 6in of snow from south lake tahoe to tahoe city and some of the upper elevations and farther to the north could see a lot more, possibly over a foot of snow. so looking at our forecast, we are dry from today through thursday and then rain chances increase on friday into the weekend, just kind of off and on as that atmospheric river sits just to our north and really targets the north bay with some heavy rain. and mike, you were taking a peek at our camera in richmond. yeah, we have one at the toll plaza for the bridge heading over towards san rafael, and i was just noticing that under the lights you can see a little glow there. there's some moisture in the air, some low clouds at times. not a major factor, but we do see some fog registered over in novato, north of san rafael. so keep that in mind. we see that typical slowing for highway 37. nothing triggered here for highway four just yet. it's a
5:23 am
tuesday. we'll see how much volume develops early, and that will give us an indicator for the morning. we have a couple of crashes in san jose. no slowing the one north 101 around hellyer. blossom hill still leaves that fast lane blocked. back to you. thanks, mike. 522. coming up next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. you joined a gym on january 1st with the best of intentions, but now it's time to call it quits. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll show you how to chmura. we'll show you how to cancel a - man, i need some serious help with this health insurance stuff. - check out covered california. it's a free service from the state that helps you get health insurance. millions of people have used it. - wait, for real? - mmm hmm, they even offer financial help to lower the cost. - nooo... how you know about all this? - that's how i got my insurance.

to join a gym, lose weight and get fit, fade fast. by march, something like 67% of gym memberships are already going unused. julie ramhold at dealnews says gyms make it easy to join in person online in their app. so what's it like canceling? be prepared to have to repeat yourself a lot, because odds are they're going to throw every tactic at you to try to get you to stay on. stand your ground. be really polite, but really firm. when your firm politeness wins, make sure you get proof of your cancellation in writing. side note there should be no fee if you just signed up in california. you have five days. there's a five day cooling off period where you can quit and don't have any cost consequences. kevin brasler with consumers checkbook, says canceling a gym membership by mail is your best defense. send it via certified mail. it seems
5:27 am
very old fashioned, but that way you have a record of trying to quit. that four bucks for certified mail should protect you. in the case of, say, the gym continuing to bill you dues and claiming that it had no idea you wanted to cancel. well, if you used certified mail, you can counter that claim and get that debt wiped clear. i'm ginger conejero saab and we're live in san francisco, where later this morning, city leaders are reaffirming its promise that san francisco is a sanctuary city for the immigrant community. we'll have more details after

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe. 5:31 am
temperatures. they're cold. they're coming. i know right. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. they say cold hands, warm heart. that's true. we'll take it that way. i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at that forecast. everyone has a warm heart this morning. yeah, absolutely. because our temperatures in some spots are dipping below freezing. we're feeling it again. and we've had these mornings for at least the past week as we get a look at where we are right now. it is 30 in danville. yesterday it was 28. that was the low. and it's now 29, in fairfield and santa rosa. we're at 32. and as we take a look at what to expect here going through the next few hours, we stay below freezing for a little while and then start to see it trending toward 40 degrees at 9:00. at noon, it's 54 degrees and eventually making it up to 62 for today. and we are going to also see those upper 50s and low 60s repeathis afternoon and for the next few days. no change in temperatures, but eventually rain will be coming back. so we'll talk about that in a few
5:32 am
minutes. mike, you're tracking a few things now in the south bay. first, the good news the earlier crash has cleared north 101 right around blossom hill. that's good. the arrow shows you where some slowing should develop over the next ten minutes. let's say we'll watch for that for a typical commute. here's an unpleasant drive right here. northbound 101 heading up toward the airport. the alameda and coleman exits there. we're looking at a crash on the northbound side, and there may be three vehicles that have to be cleared, so we'll watch for the slowing. i believe crews are arriving now. that's why there's additional slowing in the northbound direction. southbound there is a disabled vehicle, but it is not proving to be an issue there. then we'll look at more focused toward the east bay. no major issues toward the bay bridge, but the volume starting to build right on schedule. back to you. thanks, mike. help for southern california will come with conditions at scott mcgrew. this is all according to the speaker of the house, who is repeating what donald trump has said. good morning. trump and johnson want california to institute voter id. trump claims
5:33 am
he would have won our state if we had checked ids at the ballot box, implying since harris won the state by millions that millions of voters were voting improperly. here's the speaker. we've talked about conditioning the aid that will go there to policy changes. ihink that is a common sense notion that is supported by the vast majority of the american people who do not want to subsidize crazy california leftist policies that are dangerous for people. and now what the terms are and the details of that we will be working out. but entwined in all of that is the concern about election security in california. and voter id is a is a matter that, again, comports with common sense that most american people see the value in. and it'll be something we'll be trying to advance. president trump, meantime, has ordered the u.s. government to suspend all loans and grants. what that means is fairly unclear. even agencies that hand out the money are trying to figure it out. transportation. education. here's the order. it says,
5:34 am
quote, federal agencies must pause all activities related to federal financial assistance. president trump monday fired the two. the federal prosecutors who worked on his criminal cases, his interference in the 2020 election, and all those classified documents found at his home. not jack smith. he quit earlier. it is the president's right to fire anyone in his branch he chooses to. but his close involvement with the justice department makes many uneasy. one of the people pardoned by trump for his involvement in the january 6th attack has been killed by law enforcement there. on the left, a sheriff's department in indiana says matthew huddle was carrying a gun as he scuffled with a deputy during a traffic stop. president trump says the prime minister of india has agreed to accept indians deported from the united states. the two say they will meet in person soon. this comes shortly after trump convinced the country of colombia to accept
5:35 am
deported colombians by threatening to slap enormous tariffs on colombia if they didn't. here's the president telling us about the power of tariffs. colombia is traditionally a very, very strong willed country. if they don't make their product in america, then very simply they should have to pay a tariff which will bring in trillions of dollars into our treasury from countries that never paid us $0.10. now, there are a few clarifications needed after the president mentions tariffs. the first one is the usual one. colombia would not pay a tariff on colombian products. americans would pay. secondly, the top three things that colombia sends to america are crude oil, flowers and coffee. we don't need the oil. we refine it and send it back to em. flowers and coffee. you can't grow in america the way you can in colombia. robert kennedy jr and tulsi gabbard will get their days before the senate. kennedy tomorrow. gabbard on thursday.
5:36 am
these are considered trump's weaker candidates for offices. even the conservative wall street journal editorial board says kennedy would be dangerous for america's health. and trump wants him to run america's health efforts. gabbard has often been accused of parroting the kremlin. trump wants her to run american intelligence. marcus, thanks so much, scott. well, happening today, san francisco leaders are expected to double down on the city's sanctuary status. this as tensions grow in the immigrant community over the ongoing federal crackdown today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. and ginger leaders are just flatly refusing to cooperate with ice agents. that's correct, laura and marcus. that's what the city has said. that's what the city will say again later this morning, as it looks to reaffirm its position as a sanctuary city. that press conference will happen outside the steps of city hall or on the steps of city hall. and this comes as ice is
5:37 am
reporting 179 arrests so far have been made in the country, with over 850 detainees. now, i want to show you a video that a viewer shared with us. he says that these are ice agents in san francisco on sunday. now, two days prior to that, the leader of a local janitors union says that agents as well appeared at multiple buildings, but says the agents were turned away from the offices without detaining workers because they didn't have arrest warrants or search warrants on them. the city says it is still gathering information about what exactly happened on friday, but san francisco supervisors and community leaders are already speaking out against the targeted activity. we want to reaffirm 100% that san francisco is a sanctuary city. we're not going to expend our resources to separate families. we're not going to expand our resources to take people from their jobs. so we're telling our members power, not panic. exercise our rights.
5:38 am
now, there is a rapid response line that is available to people who want to use it, that can connect people with immigrant legal help. the press conference in san francisco later is scheduled for 11. that will be led by san francisco mayor daniel lurie. he'll be joined by da brooke jenkins, the city attorney, as well as the police chief and the sheriff. there will be community leaders as well. we all know that this is a very important issue here in san francisco and across the bay area. we will be there, marcus and laura, to bring you the latest in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay have been a big focus for a long time. all right, ginger, thank you. 5.37 right now. meantime, in the south bay, san jose leaders confirm ice agents carried out two more operations yesterday following an action sunday in east san jose. in that case, one arrest is now confirmed. some san jose businesses tell us they're feeling the effects, with business much slower than usual. in the wake of all the recent

federal activity. well, back in san francisco, mayor darren daniel lurie is ramping up his push for a citywide fentanyl state of emergency. this is ahead of its first real test tomorrow at city hall. that's when supervisors, budget and finance committee will hear the ordinance for the first time. that measure would unlock funding, fastrack new staff hiring and expand drug treatment and shelter capacity. later today, lori supporters will join those supporters in a rally on the steps of city hall. happening today in millbrae, leaders there may be ready to join the chorus of opponents calling for change. inside the san mateo county sheriff's office. they are expected to hold a no confidence vote asking for sheriff christina corpus to be removed from her position. san carlos leaders approved a similar resolution in november and like san carlos, millbrae, maintains a partnership with the shsheriff's office. corpus has repeatedly denied allegations, including abuse of power, nepotism and racism. a special

election planned for march 4th may give county supervisors the power to remove her. leaders in santa cruz county today are expected to get some answers about the recent massive fire at the moss landing battery facility in neighboring monterey county. well, that started january 16th over at the vistra energy power plant. firefighters allowed that fire to burn itself out, which took several days. state health leaders recently expanded their testing for hazardous toxins and leaders in monterey county. they're calling for the state puc to conduct a thorough investigation surrounding the cause and the response. it is 539 on your tuesday morning. a clear look outside overlooking san francisco, all the lights sparkling this morning. it is another chilly start to our day. yes, and we are going to see some of those temperatures near or below freezing in the inland valleys. the reason why we have a frost advisory once again in effect, for areas away from the immediate coastline. and then we're going to go throughout the morning with temperatures in the

mid to upper 30s. for palo alto, it's at 38 degrees in walnut creek and 42 in san francisco, while san jose is at 38 degrees. and then looking at walnut creek 38 right now. but we may come down to about 33 degrees at 7:00. that's just 1 degrees above freezing. and then the trend gives us a lot of sunshine and gradually warming temperatures into the afternoon. now, mike, it's tuesday. we're starting to see that commute kicking in. yeah, it might not be so evident here at the toll plaza, but we do see the volume building and the metering lights are active. we'll see a line start to form in the next few minutes visible on that camera. we see the sensors slowing a bit there and in toward the city as well. more build for highway 37. and look at this highway four. there is a crash just reported for southbound 242. that's probably why we're seeing a little more slowing. we'll track that. an important part in concord, pleasant hill. looking ahead, we know we have activity at chase center tonight. warriors. we're hoping for that win. we need to turn this streak

around here. so let's get all of our fan power and watch for those crowds coming off the 280 extension before game time. as we look at the rest of the bay, it's looking pretty smooth. we are looking at better news for 880 right here near coleman and the airport. that crash on the northbound side has been pulled from the freeway. we have recovery. there must have been a traffic break. no problem. on the southbound side that was mislabeled. it's all northbound. back to you. all right. good to know. thanks, mike. 541 this morning, addressing the impact from wildfires on our climate in crisis. coming up this morning on today in the bay, we're going to tell you why some experts believe the ash from those fires can impact some of the food we eat. and the environment is one of the reasons why artificial turf could be banned in the south bay. we'll talk about the impact that could have on where your kids

it's great news. we also talked about the slowing. you see here it is northbound 101. that first burst of traffic we see typically from 680 up to oakland road. things should calm down over the next 20 minutes. right on schedule for the south bay community. and let's head a little bit farther south and check out gilroy today. and what to expect with our temperatures. it's going to be below freezing for the next couple of hours, but then seeing a gradual warming trend and lots of sunshine as our temperatures head for 60 degrees for this afternoon. we will have rain in our forecast, and we'll talk about that coming up in just a

few minutes. and now let's turn to our climate in crisis. this morning we take a look at how the palisades and eaton fires around la could possibly affect marine life, and the food we get from the ocean. when the recent wildfires tore through los angeles, destroying thousands of homes, they also sent sent plumes of smoke out over the pacific ocean. noaa satellite images show the smoke and ash traveling as far as 100 miles offshore. and now there are questions about what that toxic, toxic material may do to the ecosystem. on the day that the fires broke out, a group of scientists from san diego happened to be off the coast of la taking water samples. and they describe the ash falling into the water like snow. and the group was part of the california cooperative fisheries investigations, also known as calcofi. and for the past 75 years, the project has involved taking regular water samples of
5:47 am
plankton off of california's coast, and when the crew saw the ash, they immediately collected some of those samples. and this is not the first time scientists have studied wildfire ash falling into the ocean. but the recent fires in los angeles are not like the others. these are urban fires. so these are houses, neighborhoods, people's homes. they are businesses. we expect to see things like asbestos and other polycarbonates that we wouldn't normally see in a vegetation fire. and to study the effects, the scientists will take the samples collected off after the fires and compare them with samples that were taken in the same area since the project began. belen said the effects could show up within weeks, while others could take years to notice. so we'll follow the developments and you can see how climate chahange is aecting the bay area on our website, nbcbayarea.com and look for our

climate in crisis page. all right. thanks, gary. 547 right now. happening today, a vote that may ban artificial turf in the south bay. it would apply to all santa clara county owned lands. supporters say the real grass is a healthier choice, but opponents call that concern outdated. today in the bay's kris sanchez in our newsroom this morning with a look at what's at stake here. hi there, marcus and laura. so what happens today could impact how many places kids and adults have to play soccer and such in the future in santa clara county. artificial turf is made of plastics, which a santa clara county health department report says can be toxic. though they did not make a connection clearly to the impact on human health. however, we know the turf can reach temperatures of up to 160 degrees when it's hot, and it's not really very good for the environment because it's not often recycled. and it can also pollute waterways, according to that report. however, it can withstand three times more playtime than natural gas. natural grass, i should

say. our investigative unit has been following this back and forth since the ban was introduced last summer, and talked with a youth sports advocate who says the turf industry is addressing that environmental concern. for better or worse, artificial turf is the only option for high use, high density field. there's certainly a shortage of fields in santa clara county for kids to play on. i absolutely agree with that. but i think the solution is not necessarily building more fields with plastic turf. now, the ban wouldn't force the removal of existing turf. it would just prevent any new turf installation. a handful of sites would be impacted, including a sunnyvale sports complex. maybe you go there on the weekends. also, county land that is leased by a private school. but there's also another big project the san jose earthquakes proposed fields at the county fairgrounds, which were planned to be artificial. the supervisors will take up this issue no earlier than 2:00 this afternoon. marcus. all right. thanks so much, chris. well, new this morning. san

francisco civic centers recently open. skate un plaza is already getting an upgrade. it only debuted a little more than a year ago. well, now the city will expand it to include beginner friendly additions to the area for younger skaters. it will include more than 2000 additional square feet of skating surface. the city's rec and parks department plans to roll out the additions on february 15th. and new for you this morning, lady gaga fans, mark your calendars. the pop divas upcoming seventh album officially has a name this morning, and it promises nothing but chaos. it kind of hurt my head. her brand new trailer reveals the album will be called mayhem, something everyone wants in their life, right? yeah. the latest announcement follows a daysong countdown on her

website, mayhem, expected to include her recent hits disease and die with a smile. i do love that one, that duet with bruno mars. and for you little monsters out there, the drumroll. it drops on march 7th. we need to issue an epilepsy warning. yeah, at the beginning of that video. well, just that early in the morning mayhem. it's an upbeat album. what is it? mayhem. dying with you or what is it? die with a smile is actually beautiful. it is a beautiful song. there are many beautiful songs that have die in the name and disease. i mean, hey, it's a theme. good morning. welcome to tuesday. all right. well, yeah. let's start out with our forecast. that's been fairly chilly out there below freezing once again, as we take a look at some of these numbers away from the coast, we've been feeling a big chill out there. and it's been settling in. no changes over the next few days, so we're going to dip down to 29 now as you're stepping out in danville.
5:52 am
it is 32 in livermore. and we're also seeing some spots below freezing all across the north bay. so napa is at 30, 32 in santa rosa and in san francisco it's 47 degrees as you're heading out. let's get a look at our high temperatures for this afternoon. los gatos, 62 degrees, also 62, in san jose and east san jose and gilroy. pretty uniform temperatures across the bay area. and these are some of the same temperatures we've seen recently with danville back up to 61 today, 60 in hayward and near the coast. we're in the upper 50s from daly city to half moon bay, 57 and palo alto today, 59 degrees, also 59, in san francisco and the mission district. with a light wind and lots of sunshine. you'll be comfortable with the light jacket, but of course you need a heavier coat this morning. so as you're looking at the closet, you may just want to layer up as we take a look at the bigger picture and what's been happening here. so we had that storm system that was spinning
5:53 am
across southern california yesterday that has now moved off towards the east, and we're back to a clear sky and high pressure that's been keeping it clear across the region. but look at this cluster of clouds. that's well to the west of us. eventually that's going to tap into some subtropical moisture and become an atmospheric river as it moves closer to the bay area. but the thing about this atmospheric river is it's targeting areas just to our north. and so while we see atmospheric rivers having a big impact and transporting a lot of water, it's not really going to be right over us. so another time when the northern california area is getting a lot of heavy rain, we're going to see this continue in the forecast from saturday to sunday. and if you're in the north bay, you can expect a lot of rain. but other areas farther to the south may not see much rain at all until about monday or tuesday. some of our models are showing that we could see a lot of heavy rainfall farther to the north, with the potential of
5:54 am
about 6 to 7in from coastal sonoma county on northward, and then san rafael. in these areas of the red and the yellow, we could see potentially about a half to three quarters of an inch. so you see how much that drops off. and then from san francisco on southward, it's about a quarter inch of rain or less. so there may be some spots, like san jose, that really doesn't get in on much of the wet weather while in the north bay it is going to be pouring down, and we'll be watching those changes here over the next few days, and it's going to be dry between now and thursday. so we will continue with the cold mornings and mild afternoons in san francisco. we'll see those highs headed back to the upper 50s and rain off and on throughout the weekend. and mike, now you're seeing the buildup. yeah. so it is a tuesday and tuesdays. we typically see the toll plaza filled up just before 6:00. that's what we're seeing right now. it's gentle and gradual. but it is a tuesday volume we're
5:55 am
seeing there. nothing dramatic. there's some fog registering in the north bay but no problems. reported to chp. highway 37 started right on schedule building there. same thing for the east shore freeway. pinole, richmond showing brake tabs over here. southbound. 242 there is a crash as you're heading down cutting that corner. so i'd say take highway four and then 680 down to avoid that crash. let's look at the timing through thehe ar out of walnut creek, taking the other routes. you have a much better drive 680 over to highway four. like we said there's no delays there. kirker pass road will cut that corner. if you're heading straight down in toward walnut creek, and 680 moves smoothly down the corridor through the walnut creek interchange. no problems there. as we look at vasco road coming out of contra costa county, that's an important route. we're starting to see the slower drive brakes tapping as the volume builds just at the tail end by dalton toward 580. so just know that's there. no problems out of the altamont pass. that's great news. and overall we're looking at a good tuesday right now. slight build here. south 880 coming out of san leandro in toward hayward right on schedule and in the south. but we also
5:56 am
have north 101 kicking in right on schedule. the earlier crash should be completely cleared 880 north at coleman. we had earlier slowing lanes blocked. i believe they've removed all three vehicles. i'll check on it again. back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now, the u.s. is reporting its first case of a new strain of bird flu. according to the world health organization, the infection was found at a duck farm in merced county. now, that new strain, labeled h5 in nine, is a far more rare than the common strain. both strains were found on that same farm. so far, no evidence of bird flu being passed from human to human, but it has led to the euthanization of hundreds of millions of poultry. 555 right now, president trump takes aim at diversity initiatives, and we're seeing the trickle down effect here at home. ahead at 6:00, the bay area university now considering cutting its dei programs. plus alameda county set to name a new district attorney. we break down the finalists vying for the job this
