well as dc's very busy airspace. i'll use the term helicopter highway. that's how retired airline pilot doug rice describes the everyday scramble of airliners and government helicopters on the potomac river. air traffic controllers ordered jets and choppers to maintain their space near what is regarded as the country's busiest single runway. we develop a trust that people are going to follow the rules. so what went wrong? investigators will comb the wreckage and likely use clues from the so-called black boxes, flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders. we asked rice what investigors might hear on the pilot's voice recorders in the final few seconds, just before and after the collision. all of a sudden, there would be an impact of some sort. they'd be fighting for control and as i said, they've got maybe five seconds after impact with the air, their aircraft, before they impacted the river. as for

technology, rice noted that modern aircraft are equipped with a traffic collision avoidance system called tcas. but rice suspects the low altitude of the collision about 400ft kept it quiet. the problem we're going to hear about tonight's accident is the fact that the tcas is inhibited below 700ft, so it will not give a warning. chris chmura. today in the bay, there are many rapid developments on this unfolding search and investigation. this morning, as we get updates, we'll give them to you. stay with us for the very latest. you can also stay up to date by downloading our app. it's free and available on all smart devices. we are also following breaking news out of the middle east. hamas is releasing more hostages that were kidnaped during the october 7th attacks on israel. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live this morning and bob, israel's prime minister, there, condemning the way in which some of those hostages have been released. you are correct. good morning to you, marcus. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has

not so cold day. and we're taking a look at our current temperatures that are in the low 40s in danville. and it's 43 in napa as well as 41 in sonoma. not as cold as it has been thanks to a layer of clouds. let's check in on the drought monitor, because we know that we do have rain coming, but it's been so dry that we are starting to see drought conditions. drought conditions worsening in southern california. so pay attention to this area in orange. that is a severe drought around the los angeles area. as we get the update of the drought monitor today, we are seeing the expansion of a moderate drought reaching very close to the bay area. but as we take a closer look, it is just to our south and we are still abnormally dry as we get into the weekend with this storm system that could finally bring in someeneficial rain and hopefully even knock out the abnormally dry conditions. here's a look at the forecast. with the rain arriving early tomorrow morning at 8:00, we are looking at some pretty

widespread rain for the north bay and then making its way across the rest of the bay area into the afternoon. this weekend we see waves of rain off and on throughout the entire weekend as well as early next week. so once this storm system moves in, this atmospheric river will be basically waving back to the north and south at times giving us some rain, at times lifting farther to the north. but it finally pushes through and there's another storm system right behind that for next wednesday and thursday. so a lot of wet weather coming our way. the possibility of anywhere from over five inches of rainfall to about 1 to 2in for the rest of the bay area. and as we go into the month of february, it looks like it's going to be a very wet start, which is actually typical for this time of year. mike, you've been tracking a burning suv. yes. sounds dramatic. no injuries and the fire is out. we didn't catch the live fire. we did catch the crew arriving north 880, just off the 280 interchange. this is in san

details on the midair crash in our nation's capital. that's where american airlines plane with 64 people on board collided with a military helicopter carrying three people. there are no survivors, and it is now being called a recovery effort. here is a live look for you at that scene this morning. so far, we know at least 28 bodies have been retrieved. cameras caught the tragedy as it happened last night. the american airlines jet was just about ready to land when the collision happened. authorities say everything was fairly standard protocol before the crash, with a helicopter conducting a training mission this morning. we have team coverage, including an aviation expert standing by to answer some questions, and our ginger conejero saab monitoring the continued iact at sfo. but first let's go to kris sanchez. she's in our newsroom this morning with the new details that we have from that about the victims there. well good morning to you, marcus and laura. so in just the last few minutes, there was a press conference out of boston in which we learned who some of those youngest victims
6:32 am
were on the passenger jet. here's the ceo of the skating club of boston. of those 14 skaters, six were from the skating club of boston, two coaches, two teenage athletes, and the athletes moms. skating is a very close and tight knit community. these kids and their parents, they're here at our facility in norwood. six, sometimes seven days a week. it's a close, tight bond. and i think for all of us, we have lost family. if you have kids who play youth sports, you know that it is a very tight knit group. now, we just also got a briefing at 430 this morning in which we were told that this is now a recovery mission and no longer a rescue mission because of the very, very cold conditions of the potomac river. this video you're seeing here on your screen is the moment when
6:33 am
that army blackhawk helicopter carrying three crew members and the american airlines regional jet carrying 64 people, collided as the jet was approaching for landing. at t this morning's briefing, the chief of dc's fire and police said 300 rescuers worked through the night. these responders found the extremely frigid conditions. they found heavy wind. they found ice on the water. at this point, we don't believe there are any survivors from this accident, and we have recovered 27 people from the plane and one from the helicopter. the national transportation safety board is leading the investigation into why the two aircraft collided on what was a clear night at reagan national airport. the u.s. army confirms that the blackhawk was on a training mission in recorded audio. you can hear the air traffic controller asking the blackhawk crew if they see the crash. that's a term you're going to hear a lot. that's the
6:34 am
regional jet. then telling the blackhawk to go around, though a former pilot said there was also a lot going on at the same time. sierra flight matsui five happened at the same time. the video shows that an aircraft is taking off as well, either from runway three, 3 or 1. and so the pilot of the helicopter could have mistaken the location of the aircraft for the aircraft taking off or lost the aircraft in sight because of all of the background lights. very, very difficult. not a lot of time or room for error. now the flight was arriving at reagan national airport from wichita, kansas. no official identification of the passengers and crew on board, but again, usa figure skating confirms issuing a statement reading in part, these athletes, coaches and family members were returning home from the national
6:35 am
development camp held in conjunction with u.s. figure skating championship in wichita, kansas. we are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims families closely in our hearts. russian state media confirmed that two russian skaters and coaches were also on board. and as i mentioned at the top of this report in just the last few minutes, we now know that at least 14 of those skaters, parents and coaches came from the same skate club out of boston. so a very tight knit group. both aircraft have been located in the potomac river. the regional jet is in three pieces in about waist deep water. so a lot of work ahead and a lot of questions this morning. laura. no doubt. so many questions here. and really. and they need to analyze what exactly went wrong. aviation analyst mike mccarron joins us live now this morning. mike, thanks for joining us. this is such a tragedy, something that hasn't happened in this scale in the u.s. in years. it's now been
6:36 am
about 12 hours since it happened. what are investigators likely focusing on trying to determine at this point? are you able to hear me, mike? i can't hear you. okay. you know what? we're going to work out that situation with mike and his audio. he's an aviation expert here in the bay area known for following so many things. we'll continue to follow this as the investigation continues. they're looking for the black boxes. we understand. this morning in the icy waters of the potomac, as well as some of the bodies that have been left behind because of this tragedy. all right. well, we know a lot of people have been talking about this. hundreds of those flights into and out of reagan national airport are now canceled. this is all in the wake of the ongoing closure. but we did hear from passengers who arrived from there last night before that airport shut down. today in the bay ginger conejero saab live for us at sfo. and ginger, i know many of those passengers there, understandably just in shock by what's going on and what's happened. yeah, that's right. marcus, those passengers
6:37 am
who arrived last night, who left not long before that crash happened, understandably shaken up by what they saw some passengers this morning that we spoke to have mixed emotions. some say, you know, this is something that is a rare occurrence. it doesn't change the way that they feel about flying. others feel a little bit more on edge about it. but here at sfo it's business as usual. we're seeing one of the flights leaving for dca at 835 is now showing on time. that's after confirmation from authorities that the airport is back up. open for travel 8 a.m. our time. but those images, what we've been seeing from that is creating shock and confusion. a lot of questions from here in the country and really around the world. i want to show you that video again of the mid-air collision that was caught on camera. that's when that black hawk helicopter and american airlines flight collided. now, passengers that arrived here at sfo last night, they flew out of reagan not long before that
6:38 am
crash took place. i want to have you listen to some of that reaction when they came in. i think an hour or two in, i remember getting the news alerts. i saw people in, like sitting next to me, like looking it up as well and trying to figure out what was going on. it's honestly terrifying. like, i like, i'm still in shock that this happened, like how close it was. you. now, as chris has also mentioned, the ntsb is now the lead agency in the recovery efforts around this crash. now, authorities also confirmed that reagan national is deemed safe to reopen for air travel. as i mentioned, that happens at 8 a.m. our time earlier this morning, john potter, who is the ceo of the metropolitan washington airports authority, reassured passengers that it is fly to safe. it is safe to fly into dca. it's been determined that we can open that airport
6:39 am
safely. the recovery effort that's on our property is on the waterfront, our primary runway, one 119, will be open. it's away from any activity. we're going to have a secure area around that. so all are comfortable that we can get back to operations. so there is the reassurance that it is safe. however, we spoke with a passenger who said that she was supposed to be on a flight going to dca this morning. she took it upon herself to change her flight and fly into dulles, because she expects that there will be a backup from the from the closures and the cancellations overnight. and so she took that upon herself. she also said that as a passenger, she feels like there's a lot of energy right now, a lot of sad energy, tragic energy that's there. and so she made herr own plans. you do want to check with your airline to see the status of your flight. despite the airport now being reopened. for now, we're live at sfo. ginger
6:40 am

big impact on your weekend plans. we're going to start to see showers coming into the north bay as early as 8 to 9:00 tomorrow morning, and then making its way across the rest of the bay area into the afternoon to evening hours, and off and on. rain in the forecast throughout the weekend, with times of rain throughout saturday into sunday and also continuing into next week. so we are going to see this possibly changing some of those weekend outdoor plans and just getting to work this morning. what can drivers expect out there? mike. yeah. kari. we're looking, of course, at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a pretty standard bill for most of the bay, a bay bridge itself and the east shore freeway showing your traditional thursday traffic flow. that means it's there, but it's lighter than tuesday for sure. the buildup out of richmond showing up, and now a little more slowing toward walnut creek. watch 680 past 24, heading down toward danville. just subtle changes there. we will have a concert tonight over at the oakland arena. so note that traffic will head over there between 6 and 8 to get into the concert, but they do the lowercase thing. but that's

everything about the aircraft, the airframe, the collision impact, and then of course, get the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder out of the regional jet. and that will give them a ton of information. as far as the what was being said in the cockpit at the time and the all the parameters that the aircraft was flying at when the collision occurred. so videos clearly show the fireball in the sky. we saw the moment of impact. at what point do you believe that the american pilots actually either on on either aircraft, knew that there was some trouble and any chances that they had to react? we heard one aviation expert saying, bright lights in the sky. that's a real possibility. but the light problem, anytime you're flying at night over a large metropolitan area, you can lose other aircraft in the horizon because they blend in with the lights coming from the ground. it's very bright area. i don't know if either aircraft knew what was happening at the time. maybe at the very last second

had no chance to take any evasive maneuvers. when you're traveling, the aircraft on approach is probably doing about 150 miles an hour, the helicopter around 100 miles an hour. you know, a second. you're traveling several hundred yards. so you haveery quick reaction times, and they may have not had any chance at all to make any evasive maneuvers. yeah. we'll see what will happen with the investigation as it is ongoing. aviation analyst mike mccarron, thank you so much for joining us. we'll have more news right mmmm... planet oat's so creamy and not watery like- exactly! and unsweetened has 0 grams of sugar. and don't forget, it's an excellent source of calcium. ♪♪
