both aircraft were killed. investigators say the information found on the black boxes will be key. yesterday, divers recovered the chopper's data recorder that records both data and voice in the cockpit. the two black boxes were pulled from the wreckage of the american airlines plane the day before that on thursday. meantime, the faa has announced new restrictions for helicopters in that airspace around reagan national. multiple zones, including the area where the crash occurred, are closed to chopper traffic indefinitely. and now another looming question who was working in the control tower the night of that crash? the ntsb is looking into whether staffing may have played a role in the tragedy. was it an air traffic controller that was working at the time of the accident? yes. yes, sir. now, i'm not going to speculate. sorry. nope, sorry. i'm not going to speculate. the next question is, was there one. two, three? i don't have the answer

7:19 am
might be putting a damper on your weekend plans, but we need it. we got our second look at the sierra snowpack and saw a big dip from earlier this season. state water officials held the survey at the phillips station near south lake tahoe and excessively dry. january has left snowpack levels at just 46% of average. statewide, the snowpack is 65% of average for this time of year. a live look at highway 50. at echo summit, you can see all that snow white out conditions in the background. this storm will dump feet of snow in the sierra. if you're headed that way, be sure to check those road conditions before you go. we do know chain controls are in effect on highway 50 as well as 80 this morning. so all eyes on cinthia pimentel with a look at our microclimate forecast. we are under a microclimate weather alert because of you said potential for flooding. yeah, we are under a flood watch. all of that rain is going to be coming in really heavy at times through
7:20 am
the morning. but let's get a sneak peek there into the sierra this weekend. a couple of inches, maybe a foot in the higher peaks up there in kingvale kirkwood. but let me give you a long range outlook because this weekend, yes, a couple of inches. but into next week, as the storm continues, we could be looking at feet of snow. so a couple of rounds of rain are going to be making their way into california over the next couple of days. so let's go on in with storm ranger, see where those rains are righght now.t has not stopped in the north bay. all of our counties, they are seeing some good amount of rainfall through parts of concord, down into san ramon, and even stretching out into byron. it is a little bit more patchy though, as we move fremont south into san jose and further down into the santa clara valley. but look at all of that moisture that is just pushing in with this atmospheric river. and here's where i think it will get pretty heavy as we go on into the mid morning hours and into lunchtime, we see those spots of yellow for the north bay, p pars of the east bay shoreline there
7:21 am
and into the tri-valley. and really the activity there will be built through the center part of the day, giving us a little bit of a break into the afternoon where you can finally go stretch your legs outdoors. but it's a morning to stay indoors and that scattered activity. i see it continuing on into our sunday morning plans where everybody, just about everybody, will get a break except those showers continuing for parts of the north bay. and there is more. that's why that flood watch will continue to be into effect and possiblbly stretched out into our next workweek. those atmospheric rivers just lining up, bringing us a lot of moisture stretching through the pacific, stretching into parts of hawaii. so here we go. our next system that could potentially be a little bit more dangerous is as we go on into monday and tuesday, there it is, filling in possibly heavy spots of rain through the santa cruz mountains and that snow that just continues through the sierra, where we're accumulating more of that fresh powder. we go on into wednesday, we see a little bit of a break, but the systems continue as we go on
7:22 am
into thursday and friday. we wanted rain. well, here it is as we went through the last couple of days, taking it into next week. now, as far as rain totals this weekend. looking good. 1 to 2 in the north bay, san francisco south about a quarter inch to half an inch. but there's where we start to pile up more of those totals. some of those legends going off of the charts there through the north bay, maybe five plus inches up, and then 2 to 3 for the rest of the bay area. so we're finally going to get a good use of our rain gear, our rain boots. we'll see the showers for today, tomorrow on and off, maybe a few peeks of sunshine depending on where you are, but they just continue on into next week with some chilly mornings there as the system drops there through wednesday. all right cynthia, thanks. 22 past the hour. we have much more ahead on today in the bay coming up. a bay area woman hoping to help one friend who lost her home in the palisades fire, suddenly found herself compelled to do a lot more. it will make you bay
