glad you're with me this morning. i'm frances rivera. today crews will begin lifting the ill-fated american airlines regional jet from the bottom of the potomac river, five days after it collided with an army helicopter killing all passengers. authorities now say 55 of the 67 victims have been identified. on sunday, ten charter buses transported the victims' family members to the crash site for a private memorial honoring loved ones. aaron gilchrist has the latest. >> reporter: a somber gathering on runway 33, dozens of loved ones of the 67 victims of the potomac potomac. >> i think we've done everything

seeing the intensity of everyone just trying to get off the plane orderly was a lot. >> no injuries have been reported, and the faa is investigating. president trump is beginning his third week back in office. risking a trade war, signing an order this weekend to enact 25% tariffs on mexico and canada, with 10% tarthe tariffs tomorrow. alice barr joins me. there is a lot of concern. >> reporter: this is expected to hit home. the tariffs hit the united states' three biggest trading partners. and experts say the drivers could see the price of gas rise by 15 cents to 25 cents per gallon because the united states imports nearly 4 million barrels of crude oil a day from canada,

an estimated $3,000 could be added to the cost of a new car, because 42% of auto parts are imported from mexico, and 13% from canada. the tariffs on china will impact technology imports. the prices of smartphones and game consoles could go up by more than $200 and as much as $350 for laptops. president trump acknowledged that there may be some financial pain. >> we may have short term a little pain. and people understand that. but long term, the united states has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world. we have deficits with almost every country, not every country, but almost. >> reporter: and the white house says that these tariffs are intended to pressure the three countries into stopping illegal immigration and the flow of drugs into the u.s. but it's unclear what specific actions the white house is looking for to lift the tariffs. saying we reject the white d b

house's slander against the mexican government of having alliances with criminal organizations. she also said mexico would respond with its own tariffs but did not give details on that plan. canada retaliated by announcing a 25% tariff against billions of dollars worth of imports from the u.s. and china says it will be filing a lawsuit with the world trade organization, vowing to implement counter measures as well. overnight, president trump told reporters he would speak to leaders of mexico and china this morning. frances? >> alice, thank you. the looming tariffs are already sending shockwaves down wall street. the news sent markets spiraling on monday. the dow expected to open nearly 700 points in the red. for details on what to expect, let's get to karen gilchrist.

>> good morning, karen. >> good morning, frances. it's a shock for markets as investors assess the economic fallout of these tariffs. u.s. futures are seeing sharply lower overnight with the nasdaq falling around 1.7%. the s&p around 1.3% and the dow down around 1.3%. this follows wider selloffs in foreign markets. japan and korean leading with some still closed for the lunar new year holiday. now oil prices have surged on the prospect of supply disruptions from two of the u.s.'s biggest suppliers, canada and mexico. meanwhile, the u.s. dollar has surged, pushing the canadian dollar and the mexican peso .

elon musk says he and president trump are shutting down the agency that handles u.s. foreign assistance. workers were fired or placed on leave from usaid. several democratic lawmakers say this undercuts american national security. musk called the agency criminal and did not say what legal authority the white house has to shut down an agency without congressional approval. today israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is in washington where he is expected to meet with president trump's middle east envoy, steve witkoff. on the agenda, negotiations on the second phase of the gaza

cease-fire, which are set to netanyahu will meet with president trump tomorrow. for more on this, let's turn to matt bodner. in the first phase of the re stl cease-fire, how is it going? >> reporter: the cease-fire is holding for the moment but appears to be on shaky grounds. over the weekend, hamas released three more israeli hostages. this was followed by the release of 183 palestinian prisoners from israeli custody. at the same time, allegations of cease-fire violations were claimed. the idf says a vehicle was moving outside of authorized areas, making it a suspicious target. several incidents like this have taken place since the cease-fire went into effect on january 19th. we are currently in the first phase of a two-phase process. during the first phase, hamas is set to release 33 hostages. 18 have been released so far.

60 more will remain in captivity for now. phase two is meant to see the release of those remaining hostages as well as the full withdrawal of the idf from gaza. negotiations for that second phase of the deal are set to begin as soon as today, but there are a number of issues that can derail further efforts to end this war. one of those factors is benjamin netanyahu. he will meet with president trump in d.c. tomorrow. netanyahu says his message to trump will focus on the return of all hostages and the defeat of hamas. that point, the defeat of hamas, would appear to contradict the outline of the current cease-fire deal which calls for the withdrawal of israeli forces from gaza. netanyahu now is under pressure to double down from the israeli right on defeating hamas, while families of hostages are pushing for the current deal. it is a snowy start for miions across the northeast. nbc meteorologist denise isaac is here with those details. good morning, denise. >> good morning, frances.
