the stock market rattled this morning. >> talk about the tariffs. these are things -- everyday items, if you slap a tariff on another country, explain why it is that that would get passed on it a consumer at the grocery store. >> sure. we've seen this before. president trump put tariffs on in 2018, and that led to higher prices for washing machines, agricultural products. it led to retaliation that farmers had to be bailed out. if you look at fresh fruits and vegetables, the u.s. imports 40%, meat, gas, cars. northern american auto is so intricate that parts going back and forth. now he wants to put tariffs on those things. its toclothing -- toys, clothing, spirits. when they come to u.s. entahrir the customs official will help over a bill for 10% or 20% and that bill has to be paid on the spot. it is paid for by the company importing. they're not going to absorb all

what is donald trump's reason for doing this? >> and the "wall street journal" called it the dumbest trade war of all trade wars. he first said he wanted to have production in the u.s. that was the rationale for the first trade wars in 2018. now he's saying this is about fentanyl and illegal immigration. these countries aren't doing enough on fentanyl and -- this is a drug war that he is waging. there have been sort of shifting rationale for what it is. what we know is that trade wars and tariffs slow economic growth, and they raise prices. so that is what i think american consumers are now on the front lines of this trade war. and we'll wait to see what trump is asking for from america's neighbors and strategic competitors like china. but certainly he is rewriting the rules of trade, rules of trade that, by the way, have helped raise living standards in the united states for the past 40 years. >> we'll see what develops today. already the president talking to justin trudeau of canada. we can see at the bottom of our screen the dow already in free fall now.

and chronic pain is something that impacts nearly 52 million americans. and searching for a solution can mean a lot of doctors, medicines, alternative therapies. but what if the cure isn't a physical remedy at all? turns out there is a method that people all around the world say has ended their chronic pain. joined now by nicole sax, a leading clinician on mind and body wellness and the author of a fascinating new book, called "mind your body: a revolutionary program to release chronic pain." to release anxiety, as well. just started over the weekend. we were talking because this is top of mind for a lot of folks. "new york times" had a big piece on it the other day. chronic pain is real for millions of people. >> yes. >> we don't want to dismiss the idea of chronic pain. but you maintain that we can cure chronic pain by doing what?
8:50 am
>> the first thing i always have to start with is the pain is not in your head. >> yes. >> you are not hysterical. you are not making it up. you are not overly sensitive. it is so important that i start there. and it is also important if you are feeling pain in your body you go to a doctor, you get checked out. you know, i am not a person that believes in bypassing any of that. but in the thousands and thousands of people i have worked with around the world, so many times they reach a dead end, right? the doctor says there is nothing else we can do for you. the doctor says we have a diagnosis, but there is no cure. you have to learn to live with it. that's where i come in. migraines, back, neck, shoulder, hip pain, long covid. long covid is a big one right now that i'm working with people, completely resolving their symptoms. >> how do they do it? how do you do it? >> the best way i can describe it is this. picture the house is on fire and the alarm goes off. the alarm is screaming because it needs to get your attention.

it gets your attention, but the alarm is not the problem. it is an indication that there is a problem. the problem is the fire. so the way i help people understand it says your migraine or your fibro flare, gut issues, back pain, that is your alarm. so the alarm is going off. but what's really the problem? what i found in my many, many years is our stored trauma and repressed emotional worlds create a situation where our nervous system feel like we're in danger, like there is a predator and it looks to seek to protect us. >> and how do we go about fixing that? >> we have to bring the repressed emotional world up so we don't have to run from a predator we can't run from, which is ourselves. >> in the book you write about your signature tool is something called journal speak. in the simplest of terms, what
8:52 am
is this that you write about? >> if the repressed emotional reservoir side of us is bubbling up and putting us into fight or flight, it is like dipping a ladle into the reservoir and bringing it down. it is not regular journaling, but it is a way in which we can get to the things kicking our nervous systems up and making us feel like we're in danger. it is so much to explain, but it is so key that people have hope. >> we have 20 minutes of unapologetic writing and then you throw it out. why do you throw it out? >> i want people to feel safe to really go into the places that their nervous systems might think is putting them in danger. meaning if you have conflict with your mother, if you have trouble raising your kids or personal relationships, these are quote, unquote predators, but they aren't really going to hurt us. we need to know them so we don't feel so disregulated.
