takeover of gaza. the details on his unusual pitch to create, quote, the riviera of the middle east, while suggesting palestinians should abandon their homeland. this is today in the bay. a very good morning to you. 5:00 on wednesday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we do begin with flooding concerns in the north bay. it follows yesterday's big storm that will still is leaving some mess there in the wake of it all. now, from the flooding in novato to the mudslide in saratoga that closed highway nine crews there this morning still working to clear that debris. this morning we have team coverage on the aftermath and those flooding concerns. meteorologist kari hall is monitoring water levels. but let's start out with today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she is live in guerneville. and ginger, you can really see the impact of the storm where you are. that's right. good morning. laura and marcus. and
5:02 am
guerneville is not a place that doesn't see flooding. i mean, they usually do see flooding with some of these big storms. but the last time that we were even here, the water didn't come this far out. i want to show you a look kind of how how much water is on this road that leads into a park and into those homes. you can see there's a car that's still there. it's about halfway on those tires, though. the water comes about halfway on the halfway up on those tires. you can see that garbage truck there in the middle of the road. and moments ago we spoke to a gentleman who says that he lives nearby and says that police you went went through the homes and the units one by one, trying to make sure that everybody got out. this is also something else that i wanted to show you, which is a parking lot. the last time that we were up here and one of the major storms as well, the water didn't even come close to where it is now, especially now filling the parking lot. that gentleman that we spoke with says most of the people tried to
5:03 am
get theirars out from this parking garage and park on the street, but as you can see, there are still some that have, you know, unfortunately left their their cars here. now, the impact of the rains and the floods, this is also a concern down in napa. that is where people have been watching those water levels very closely, because it was expected to crest at major flooding levels overnight. fortunately, that did not happen. however, there has been higher water levels around the river in the downtown area, prompting the city to close its flood gates last night as the runoff from the storm was causing levels to quickly rise. now, pathways where people usually walk down by the river were covered with water and the high levels piquing the curiosity and even prompting those concerns of residents in the area. i haven't seen it this high before. as i told you earlier, we actually lived downtown during new year's eve 2005 2006, and that was, of
5:04 am
course, like a major flood in napa. but this is incredible that it's flooded all the way under the bridge. the kayak and gondola launch spot, the bridge to it has been lifted. there's a patch of grass over in that area where we host concerts and things like that. so those people down in napa were very closely watching those levels. the good news is that it did not crest at major levels. it's an action stage, just under 24ft here by the russian river. the waters are expected to crest at six this morning. we'll be watching out for further impact from that, but that is expected to get up to more than 35ft. that's moderate flood stage. laura and marcus. and as that gentleman that we spoke to not too long ago just said, this is his first time experiencing a
5:05 am
flood like this. and he doesn't, you know, he has concerns with his family. he says this is really something that he doesn't. he isn't familiar with how to deal. he isn't familiar how to deal with this, especially because the standing water is going to be here for some time. we're live in guerneville, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. tough way to quickly learn or have to learn. thanks so much, ginger. all right, let's turn things over to meteorologist kari because she has been monitoring those water levels for us for the russian river this morning. and, kari, how close are we to the flood stage? yeah, the good thing is that the rain has moved on, and so we're not expecting much in the way of any heavy rainfall as we go through the next few hours. but looking at the russian river at guerneville, we are expecting it to crest at 6 a.m. and it will be just below that moderate flood stage, or could go about a half of a foot above that moderate flood stage in the next hour or so, and then quickly start to recede as we go throughout the day and into tomorrow. but looking at our hour by hour forecast once again, we are mostly dry for the
5:06 am
bay area, with the exception of some very spotty showers in parts of the north bay this morning. and by this afternoon, things are really clearing up as the rest of the bay area continues to see sunshine, you will notice that it will be much cooler as now the cold front has settled in, so we'll continue to watch those water levels. and what's ahead with the next round of rain in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been watching some road work in many parts of the bay. there was a lot of rain, but then others it was a lot lighter. so there was enough of a break that crews here on 101 at university were able to do the work on the northbound side where it is. they had to completely blocked off your off ramp to southbound university avenue, which is just over here in the overpass. i did see some cars go through the area, and some crews just cleared in the last few minutes as we were talking th ginger, so they may be getting ready to reopen the area. no slowing on the sensors. southbound direction sees the closure at university overnight from 1 to 4 tomorrow morning, so keep that in mind. so far though, everything much lighter, much better conditions. back to
5:07 am
you. thanks so much, mike. we are following breaking news overnight in richmond. police now confirming officers shot and killed a man they say was wanted on domestic violence charges. that shooting happened a little before 9:00 last night near carlson boulevard, north of cutting. officers say the suspect refused to cooperate, and for some reason, the conflict escalated. police so far not indicated if the suspect was armed, but say the investigation is still in its early stages. widespread backlash this morning for president donald trump. this is after his latest proposal for the middle east and the future of gaza. he's proposing redeveloping the territory and keeping it under u.s. control. he outlined all of this during a news conference with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, and he suggested that they should uproot the more than 2 million palestinians who live in gaza. the president also is not ruling out deploying u.s. troops in gaza. and this morning, u.s. lawmakers on both
5:08 am
sides are pushing back. we'll see what the arab world says. but you know that the problematic at many, many levels. that's insane. i can't think of a place on earth that would welcome american troops less, and where any positive outcome is less likely. adding to the humanitarian challenge in gaza, the u.s. agency for international development announced overnight almost all direct hires will be placed on administrative leave this week. meanwhile, bay area activts are organizing a protest against u.s. foreign policy in gaza and the trump meeting with netanyahu and demonstration is being planned outside of berkeley city hall at 3 p.m. all of this comes as talks continue to extend the middle east ceasefire past the march 1st deadline. and though some israeli hostages have now been released, other families remain in an agonizing wait. among them the family of a young man whose mother grew up in berkeley. today in the bay's kris sanchez. following that
5:09 am
story for us. and kris, she's now being, you know, been experiencing what? nearly 16 months of heartache here. yes. so alona hill is one of the young people who was kidnaped by hamas on october 7th of 2023, and his mother knows exactly how it happened because it was caught in horrifying detail on camera. the kidnaping we have, the kidnaping video where hamas took the, you know, the, you know, took the video. so we can see how this happened. the video of alana hill being dragged away by hamas is hard to watch, but his mother does not want people to forget how he and the other hostages were kidnaped from the nova music festival on october 7th of 2023. she also wants the wod to see her son, as he lived up to that point playing music which his mother says guides his life. and here, smiling, surrounded by his family, including his mother, who grew up in berkeley. israel and hamas reached a ceasefire agreement just three weeks ago, allowing for the release of
5:10 am
women and children, injured hostages and hostages over the age of 50. allen, who will be 24 next week, was not among them. while i'm celebrating those returning my family and many others, we remain in agony. although allen has not been seen in the last 15 months, he believes he is alive and she is desperate for the latest ceasefire between israel and hamas to hold. so the second wave of hostages can be released starting march 1st. negotiations for that are set to begin next week, and who knows, they will be delicate after the first deal in november. okay. dozens of hostages were killed. dozens. and we fear that this history will repeat itself if there is no action. as of january 30th. 15 hostages have been released and 400 palestinians set free. but of course, these are very tenuous times. laura, thank you
5:11 am
very much. interesting to hear her story. well, let's take a live look now at the white house, where governor gavin newsom is expected to meet today with president trump talking about help for recent wildfire victims. it comes following the president's visit to the fire zones last month. at the time, he suggested federal aid may be withheld or come with some kind of catch. newsom will be the first democratic leader to visit the white house since the president took office. the meeting also comes a day after trump says california's high speed rail project should be investigated. all right. today, are we going to get a chance to go out and about, maybe run some errands? get a break in the forecast in the rain today? yeah, break in the rain, but definitely not break in the cold weather. it's really going to be much colder than we had yesterday. now that the front has settled in. and there is a frost advisory in effect for the valleys in the north bay, where we are going to see those temperatures dipping near freezing over the next several hours, down to 36 degrees in
5:12 am
napa, 35 in sonoma and 34 in santa rosa and santa rosa. we are once again at about 34 degrees. the wind is calm, will be in the upper 30s for the next few hours, but as we go throughout the day, gradually warming with a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures there headed up for 55 degrees, which is a little bit lower than we typically see even in early february. so it will be a colder, cooler day across the bay area. scott. well, after years of worrying about it, some california college colleges are now accepting ai. let's go out to the futures this morning, see what's up. and wall street and it's going to be a tough day. we got some disappointing news from google and apple. we'll talk about it. plus a safe place for travelers to decompress. ahead we show you the new sensory room opening inside of sfo. much more ne ahead. don'tws

i guess what i'm looking for from you is, i mean, i know how the fire affected me, and there's always a constant fear that who's to say something like that won't happen again? that's fair. we committed to underground, 10,000 miles of electric line. you look back at where we were 10 years ago and we are in a completely different place today, and it's because of how we need to care

state university system just announced it's working with openai and its chatgpt for education that will help students at campuses like san jose state use ai for tutoring and the like, and the job skills they need in the future. it's also remarkable, though, ever since chatgpt was unveiled, educators were worried about students using it. some schools banned it. now, with the open ai that's new called chatgpt edu, the university is supplying it due to new tariffs against china. the u.s. post office says it will stop delivering de minimis packages. these are those little packages that come directly from china, from companies like shein or temu, somemething yo order off tiktok. president trump has promised for a long time to end that direct access from chinese factories to the american consumer. walmart encouraging many of its behind the scenes workers, office workers and the like to move from wherever they are to

for neurodivergent travelers looking to ease their feelings of nervousness over flying. it includes two rows of seats, overhead bins, even working lights. t airport's guest experience director says the space also includes soundproof walls, dim lighting and other tools for decompression. as time has gone by, we've become more and more familiar and aware of the neurodiverse community. they make up potentially up to 30% of the us population, so a lot of our travelers would consider themselves neurodivergent. vo joins a handful of other airports, including pittsburg, kansas city, portland and seattle tacoma, in creating such a space. coming up in our streaming newscast at 8:00, we're going to give you a full tour of the new sfo space. you can watch live on roku, pluto, and other platforms, including nbcbayarea.com. i'm for one, always running to my flight, so i probably don't have room. time for the sensory room. the way you read that, i just put me at ease. i felt like it needed to be read like that, you know?
5:20 am
yes. yes. okay. all right. trending this morning, an all star in the world of comedy is adding to what no doubt will be a sold out set in the mix when basketball's biggest stars come to the bay area. let's pick things up here. dave chappelle just announcing plans there for auditorium. it's happening inic san francisco eight days from today, thursday, february 13th. tickets go on sale at noon today. his show comes just ahead of nba's all-star weekend, which is highlighted by the game over at chase center on sunday. the 16th. and if you watch closely, you'll see mike and i in our dreams out there playing. you know, i can try to spin the ball on my finger. is that right? if they when the globetrotters came up. yeah. they spin it and they put it on your finger. i can do that. it's like, hold it, hold it. but there's going to be so much going on with the next couple of weeks with the super bowl, the nba. yeah, we've got the lunar new year. so yeah we're going to be watching the weather for all of that too. i know you're just making plans for the weekend for your super
5:21 am
bowl party. so as we take a look outside, it is clear we are going to still see some lingering showers in parts of the north bay while the rest of the bay area is going to be cold and sunny today, with more rain coming in tomorrow and the weekend will be staying dry. but kind of on the cool side as we take a look at the bigger picture here, we once again are seeing the rain moving to the south of us and then looking at this next system with some colder temperatures that will be dropping in as we go into tomorrow. so looking back at how much rain we've already measured, santa rosa had over seven inches of rainfall. it was the north bay that really racked up the most in napa over 5.5in, but we also got quite a bit in the berkeley hills and that waws close to six inches there. san francisco nearly four. over four inches of rainfall. and in san jose we were over one inch of rainfall. very much needed south of the golden gate bridge. not so much for the north bay. and we are going to have a cool day now that the colder temperatures are settling in. we'll also have
5:22 am
some chilly nights and dropping down into the 30s, with our highs only reaching into the 50s over the next few days. so our hour by hour forecast shows that there still will be a chance of rain from marin county to napa and sonoma counties as well, and farther north, while the rest of us may miss out on that rain, it's going to be partly cloudy for the afternoon. the next batch of showers will arrive early tomorrow morning, and then we'll continue off and on throughout the day, and maybe even continue into friday morning before rolling out of here for the weekend. rainfall totals will reach about three quarters to an inch, possibly an inch and a half in san francisco. and then the rest of the forecast. we a are seeing things looking much quieter after such a busy week, and we are going to see sunshine from saturday all the way through next tuesday, and temperatures that will head for the mid to upper 50s. overnight lows, though, will dip each night into the 30s, and in san francisco 57
5:23 am
and sunny today, but expect showers for tomorrow as well as early friday. mike, you've been watching the golden gate bridge. yeah, i was watching nothing for a while. the southbound traffic had paused, as is typical. when they clear the construction, the overnight roadwork on the marin side, there was enough of a break again for that crew to head out there, heading south toward spencer, and you see the flashing lights as they are coming over from the marin side and traffic is restored. coming into san francisco out of marin county. a smooth drive, not enough to really show up on our sensors. you might see a little dip for a couple of minutes. we're looking at the rest of the bay. oh, just now we're seeing highway 37 show the typical slowing out of vallejo. no slowing for highway four into concord, pleasant hill all moving very smoothly. a wind advisory given for a lot of the bridges overnight. things are calmer now, but just know the chp did call out the bridges, as well as the altamont pass light traffic there throughout the east bay and tri-valley, as well as the south bay. back to you. thanks, mike. it is 523. coming up next on today in the bay, we are celebrating black history month on nbc bay area. and this morning we're going to introduce

5:30 am
530. for you this morning. good wednesday morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. this morning we continue with our storm coverage. this is people who live in the north bay are bracing for more possible flooding. now, the main concern is the russian river, which is expected to crest around 6:00 this morning. that potential flooding is prompting mandatory
5:31 am
evacuations along the river. this is for people in the low lying areas. we have team coverage this morning. meteorologist kari hall is monitoring this morning's river levels, but we want to start things over with ginger conejero saab. she's live for us in guerneville. and, ginger, i know we've been talking to you this morning, and we're already seeing some of the water levels increase where you are. that's right. and it looks like people are still really trying to take action. marcus, before the river crests at six. i want to point your attention behind me. there is a man who has been working on getting his truck out of this flooded garage. before that, he was successful in getting another car out. but with water levels, these flooded water levels are expected to risese en higher, potentially as the river crests. at six this morning. you definitely want to get as much as you can out. you can see he's driving through that standing water right there. now, we've been here before. this is the
5:32 am
farthest out that we've seen flooded waters. last time it was, you know, much further in over kind of where that sign is and maybe possibly where that car, that other car that you see that stuck there. that's kind of where the water was last time. but if i could point your attention over to the right, it's come much further out and past six. we spoke to someone from sonoma county fire who expects that this water can actually go all the way out to where the road is, and to the end of that driveway that that person who's surveying from sonoma county fire also said that this is what he what he deems kind of the worst that he's seen this morning here out in guerneville. now, there are other areas that are still flooded or are also flooded in guerneville. i want to show you that video. it's hard to get great perspective because it's still dark out, but you can see just how high the water is with a truck that looks about halfway submerged in flood waters, the trailer right next to it.
5:33 am
another indication of just how high those flood waters are. about five minutes away from where we are, there's another place that's called pee-wee golf and arcade. across the road from that trailer. and that truck there. also, there's also quite a bit of flooding there. characters from the mini golf course appear to just pop out from standing water. there are signs and a building which is part of that mini golf and arcade that you can see are also in flooded waters. now our news team caught people evacuating last night. that's when there were mandatory evacuations for people in low lying areas. that was also after an alert was sent out from sonoma county sheriff's office, saying that all properties along the lower russian river from healdsburg to jenner, below 36ft, must leave now, or 36ft flood level that they must leave now. pulling out because i don't want to have to step out into water in the morning. a little stressed, but you know, we've been through
5:34 am
this a few times. i've lived here for about ten years. yeah. so that really has been quite a concerern. marcus and laura, sie last night, officials are forecasting the river to crest at about 35ft, just just 30 minutes from now. so you can see that man that was trying to get his car or cars out of this parking garage was really working to jumpstart that truck wasn't working that well, but fortunately, it seems like he's able to get that out. we'll be here throughout the morning to give you more updates, but for now, for now, we're live in guerneville. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. having that pickup truck definitely worked out in that situation there. all right, ginger, thank you. also in the north bay, some sonoma county schools will not open today due to the ongoing storm impact. that includes all schools in the guerneville school district, the monte rio union school district and the west sonoma county union high school district. also, cassia elementary school east of
5:35 am
stewarts point. well, now let's check in with meteororologist ki hall. she's been tracking the russian river levels this morning. and so we are. the good thing is that we're not seeing much more in the way of rain. so the storm system has moved on. that will hopefully give us a chance to give a break from those rising water levels. but we are still under a flood warning through tomorrow morning for the russian river at guerneville. and we are going to see the flood stage and the river levels cresting in the next hour or so, and then peaking at 35.79 as of the latest readings there. and that's above a moderate flood stage. but we're also watching the napa river at napa, and it is now at 23.57ft. the last time it got to 23ft or higher was 2019. and so it's the highest levels since the past 25 years was 2006, at 29.85ft, and the highest ever was in 1995 when it
5:36 am
got up to 30.5ft. well, as we take a look at what to expect today, as people are trying to clean up and watching those water levels, it will be a cooler day. temperatures in the mid 50s. for our afternoon high it will be sunny, but we will see another storm system coming in tomorrow. back to you. all right, kari, thank you. well, kari is certainly monitoring that, but our coverage continues with today in the bay. bob redell. he's over in san francisco. i know you're monitoring the rockslide there in telegraph hill neighborhood. can you talk to us about the progress with the cleanup? how is that going? well, the city hasn't even started to try to clean up this rockslide that happened last night. as you can see, it spilled out onto the street. we're on sansome street, not far from the intersection with union. this is across the street from levi's plaza. if you're familiar with this area. this is at the base of telegraph hill neighborhood here in san francisco, not far from coit tower. and what you can see there, if you can see it in the dark. this is rock that is come
5:37 am
through the barriers here that have been set up here. this is a large base of rock. if you're not familiar with this area that's been here for obviously since the beginning of time, but what it looks like is at the base of this hill, this rock, a part of it sheared off. it does look like as you look up there, you can see up there in the light. there's still a lot of foundation there. so it looks like this is just something that sheared off at the bottom during yesterday's wind and rain storm. and as you look to the left, the headlights are coming towards us on the road here. the city has put up some k-rails here so that people cantill drive down this section, so it's not impacting sammy sullivan as far as we can tell. it doeoesn't look like any more of this is coming. going to be coming down anytime soon. i'm not a geologist. i'm just telling you, it looks like the part that did come down is settled for right now. and that's a good sign, considering the fact we don't have any more rain or wind right now. so of course they'll be up to the city to decide what to do with this. but right now they've just shut off this section of sansome, allowing the rest of the traffic to continue on. as you can see,
5:38 am
the san francisco fire department, they did tweet out that this happened a little bit before 630 last night, says there is no threat to the public, and they're just asking people to avoid this area. now, yesterday's storm caused problems elsewhere. also here in san francisco, the wind and rain brought down a tree which took out an overhead muni line. the wire there and crashed onto a parklet. this happened in front of the blue light sports bar in cow hollow. one person was hurt, but they are doing okay. let's head down to the south bay. i think we have new video into the newsroom. this is a mudslide that closed down a stretch of highway nine in the santa cruz mountains. i don't know if you can see the slide in the video there, but you can see the closure as a result of that. caltrans is working on removing the dirt and debris. the closure is between sanborn and redwood gulch roads again on highway nine. while caltrans is doing the cleanup, they're also monitoring that hillside to determine if the slide is stable, which could delay a reopening. we are hoping to have a better idea in a matter of
5:39 am
minutes, around 6:00 this morning, as to whether or not highway nine again in the santa cruz mountains will reopen after that mudslide. reporting live here in san francisco. bob redell today in the bay. all right. perfect. we'll check in with you, bob, throughout the morning. our free nbc bay area app is also a great resource to have. once that heavy rain returns tomorrow, you can actually type in your zip code and get a customized forecast for your neighborhood. keep it handy. all right, mike's got a look at the roads for us. a little break in the rain. yeah, break in the rain. but let's talk about the slide that bob was talking about over here off the sanborn park and redwood gulch area. t this is the area e often talk about with one way traffic control. they continue to try to shore up the sides since last storm season. so this is a repeated issue over in the area still blocked off right now. we'll see if they can do one way traffic control. bob and i will follow that over the course of the morning. meanwhile, your typical commute starts northbound 101 with little break tap just around the area of 680 heading up toward oakland road. and we know that happens for the south bay. first
5:40 am
