it was difficult to understand what she was saying and she was obviously panicking. she didn't know if she could get out and. but. it was just so scary. understandably emotional, he says first responders rescued both his wife and his daughter. both are fine. the home, meantime, will have to be torn down, sadly. he also tells us it's a rebuild from the home they lost in the 2017 firestorm. so tough to see. meteorologist kari hall is keeping tabs on our latest conditions, and we are starting out with some light rain as we track it with storm ranger. and we are seeing that rain arriving a lot more is off the coast, and that will be moving in as we go into late morning as well as early in the afternoon. our hour by hour forecast shows it between 7 and 8:00. much more of the bay area will start to see some wet weather, and it may be heavy at times. already starting out in the morning but expecting the

potential of some thunderstorms again this afternoon, and where we see the heavier downpours set up, that's where we may have some flooding issues, mainly for the north bay under a flood watch for the afternoon as the flood warning for the russian river at guerneville continues. and then looking at 4:00 this afternoon, we're starting to see some breaks in the activity, but there still will be some hit or miss rain through tonight into early tomorrow morning, so at least another 12 to 18 hours with some more of this wet weather moving through the bay area. mike, you're tracking a closure in palo alto, kari, right behind me. i've been watching. i saw flashing lights and crews now moving. that's the northbound side of 101. here's the university avenue overcrossing southbound. you still see traffic routed off, taking a double loop and then continuing back on to 101 because of their road work right here under the overcrossing scheduled to pick up at 4:00. but clearly it's still here, so you will have that delay. folks are slowing. the crews are moving, but it's still not yet reopened. southbound 101 at

who are we cutting? we're trying not to be among them. right. thank you. scott. we want to turn back to our storm coverage because you're going to need some hot coffee this morning. we made it through one storm this week already. but we are expecting more rain today. and we're moving the bay area forward through the impacts of the rain. with the help of our exclusive radar storm ranger today in the bay, cinthia pimentel has a closer look at the technology. storm ranger is the bay area's only mobile doppler radar. it's right here on san bruno mountain, and it's taking accuracy to the next level. the great thing about storm ranger that other radars, miss, is that it's closer to the ground, allowing it to get a better scan of what's going on with the rain, fog or smoke. it does this not only with a much faster horizontal scan, but a vertical one too, giving us more detail of the different sizes and shapes of raindrops, hail or snow. and you can see storm ranger two on our free nbc bay area app or on our website, and
5:20 am
customize the weather alerts to your home, work, or school location. we have rain moving across the bay today, so i'll send it over to meteorologist kari hall with a look ahead at our thursday and the weekend, too. thank you cinthia. so here's a look at what we're scanning with storm ranger. it's parked on san bruno mountain, and we can see how it gives us a pretty good view of the north bay, as well as the rest of the bay area. we're already seeing the showers moving in, and this wet weather will continue to move across the rest of the bay area throughout the morning. we are really concerned about the russian river at guerneville still under a flood warning. and then notice how all of the rest of the bay area is under a flood watch. and that goes until tomorrow afternoon, as we could possibly see some rain really picking up, adding on to the surplus of rain that we already have in santa rosa. we're at 13in above our normal amount. we've had 33in of rainfall since the beginning of the water year, and santa rosa has already
5:21 am
surpassed the annual rainfall of 30.98. so we are above what we should get for the entire year, and there's more on the way. so that's the reason why we're seeing the mudslides, the flooding, as well as the quick rise in rivers, creeks and streams. and this is where we could possibly see some heavier downpours and thunderstorms into the afternoon. the national weather service giving the heads up that some of those thunderstorms may rotate. that could mean some wind damage or possibly even spawning some weak tornadoes. so that's a possibility today, as we see another three quarters of an inch of rainfall to possibly an inch and a half for spots like oakland. and then after all of this rain, we get a chance to dry out for a little while. so the weekend is looking dry. it will be chilly though, and near freezing every morning. at least some frost on some of those elevated surfaces. and then with the sunshine, we make it into the upper 50s and that continues through the middle of next week. mike, you're seeing amooth drive across the bay bridge. yeah, and not as many notes

to that top story. you'll be talking about it today with the help of our storm ranger. the bay area's only mobile doppler radar. we are tracking the incoming rain. our team coverage this morning includes meteorologist kari hall, who is timing out the wet weather. but first, let's begin with ginger conejero saab. she's live in santa rosa this morning. and ginger. one family's experience serving as a big warning for everyone in that area. that's right. good morning, laura and kris. a santa rosa family is home, which is a newer one than a previous one, which was destroyed by the tubbs fire. has been red tagged and deemed uninhabitable after a landslide. now, about 17 homes have also gotten notification. three have been evacuated and two red tagged here in the deer trail court area. the neighborhood of unincorporated santa rosa. now, this is after mud slammed into a home tuesday night. firefighters rescued robert boyd's wife and daughter from the house and red
5:32 am
tagged it. now, boyd says his wife sounded terrified when she called him at work after the landslide hit, and she was stuck % difficult to understand what she was saying and she was obviously panicking. she didn't know if she could get out and but. it was just so scary. as far as we know, the rainfall had been 4 or 5 days. it got to a saturation point in the ground and probably about 25ft of mud just kind of slid into the house and took out the house. so landslides continue to be a concern here with the potential of landslides, i should say. but further north, officials are also keeping a close watch on the russian river and the flooding that can happen since the river did swell over its banks. we were there yesterday and we know that in the morning hours at least, there were about
5:33 am
four water rescues from sonoma county fir here in santa rosa. this area here has been has received evacuation warnings. and since last night, some of the families are not taking any chances in getting out before that rain comes and that wet weather, whether wet weather comes back. we're live in santa rosa, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. in a busy week. thanks, ginger. coverage continues with meteorologist kari halall. you are timing out the arrival of that rain, kari. and i'll tell you, if folks weren't listening before, they should really be listening now. absolutely. in the north bay, where we've had so much rainfall in other areas, we are expecting this rain to move in and out quickly with not a lot of impact as we go throughout the day. but as this moves in, we can see that there are some pockets of heavy rain even as it moves in and it's off the coast as of now. you see the bright yellows there and the intense rain that will be working its way into the bay area. so watching the north bay for that flood watch that wiwill be in effect for napa,
5:34 am
sonoma and marin counties until tomorrow afternoon. but the russian river, guerneville will have the possibility of rising once again going into later today. the r rain will continueo fill in and become more widespread between 8 to 9:00, and then the possibility of thunderstorms as we go into the afternoon will also cause more concern. so we'll be tracking that. mike, now you have a truck that's stuck on a bridge. yeah. now we see slowing. this is the san mateo bridge. mid-span kari just shy of the high rise. from what i understand, there's a big rig. that's a big rig. tow truck that's needed. chp says there are none on the hayward side, so they're checking the san mateo side. they'd have to drive that truck across the bridge, turn it around, and then get back on the westbound direction. additional delay. right now, we just know that it's blocking one lane and the commute starting to build. you saw that a bit of slowing everything approaching the bridge for the bay bridge is moving very smoothly on the span itself. i just learned about a fender bender a hit and run report there. so if anybody you
5:35 am
hear at work heard saw something on the san mateo on the bay bridge, i'm sorry, they should call chp. i don't see any active flashing lights on the span. it should be just shy of treasure island. we do see the traffic moving smoothly, but the volume builds up. we'll send it back to you. all right. thank you. mike. the criminal case against former oakland mayor sheng thao is set to be back before a judge this morning. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live. and, bob, do we know what's going to happen before this federal judge? we know this hearing is at 930 this morning in oakland in federal court. good morning to kris. we know that a federal judge will be holding a status hearing with both the prosecution and the defense, presumably to see where both sides are in preparation for their trial. it's not clear if former mayor, former oakland mayor sheng thao and the three other defendants will be in court, or if it'll just be their attorneys. last month, tao did appear in federal court to plead not guilty to charges of bribery, conspiracy and mail and wire fraud. prosecutors allege

down sideways. and we expect more today. cinthia pimentel is tracking the possibly dangerous conditions. cinthia. that's no joke. it sure isn't. we are under a winter storm warning that will go into effect in a couple of hours from now, lasting through about noon on friday. so what we're expecting right now is about 6 to 10in of some fresh powder in the lower levels, 2 to 3ft in those peaks. now, once you get to those peaks, also the very gusty wind, if you must travel up there, i recommend the chains, of course, and adding a couple more hours to that drive, snacks of course, and all of the emergency kits to get you through this. so let's give you a better timeline. here we go through the middle of the day and into the afternoon. that rain piling up on the valley floor, transitioning to the very heavy snow. once you get into the peaks there of 80 and 50, it is just sloppy as we carry it on. even into friday morning, i see a better chance for you maybe as we go on into late friday night, but by that point it's already dark. better conditions are expected as we go

on into our saturday with the daylight as well. i did want to bring it back here to you because we're getting closer to the weekend. let's find you some things to do. the san jose lunar new year tet festival at the eastridge mall. it goes friday to sunday. timing for tomorrow is through the afternoon. it comes back into the morning hours there through saturday and sunday, but expect a cool weekend, staying dry and in the 50s. how about this the super bowl festival in sausalito, a soup tasting. you can find those tickets online there. it might be a little bit breezy, so bring that jacket as you find your way around the marin county bay shore, now through san francisco. of course, for any super bowl viewing parties or still continuing to celebrate lunar new year, it will be dry, but also chilly, not making it out of the 50s there. mike, let's go over to you and what's going on in the traffic world. we're looking at the bay bridge. cinthia. we had an issue, a disabled vehicle, actually, a fender bender. i'm sorry. reported mid-span heading toward treasure island. i've been watching that camera from emeryville. i've seen no interruption to the flow, and we don't see the backup here. i
5:41 am
don't think the bridge is worried about the backup on the span. despite that report, i think that was a hit and run. so everything may be clear from the bay bridge. we'll still watch that for a few more seconds. we do have highway 37 typical build off merritt island. no slowing shows up for concord just yet, but look at that blue up in the north bay across the rio vista bridge. we do have some standing water reported for our road weather index and the changes are coming. that's why, again, they've halted the angel island golden gate ferry service. so you'll be suspicious. report. the reports are that they're going to replace a couple of ferries as well this afternoon. they're going to use the golden gate bus instead. so check their website for the changes for the afternoon schedule. i think it's after 4:00 when those changes will come in. we still have slowing across the bay on the san mateo bridge because of a disabled big rig, basically mid-span they need a heavy duty tow truck. they can't find a large enough tow truck to clear that rig, so it's still blocking one of your three lanes across. and then as we look toward the evening, we're looking at san jose sap center at the tank. there will be a sharks game tonight, so we're hoping for the victory. but we do advise that
5:42 am
there will be some crowds heading there. excited folks. no problem. for northbound 101, your typical little bit of slowing shows up around oakland road. and remember, just like yesterday, we still have highway nine closed because of that slip out. so that will be inaccessible around sanborn park. back to you. thanks so much, mike. a game day tradition we all love to see. we are talking about those super bowl commercials ahead on today in the bay, the way one silicon valley tech giants taking the opportunity to highlight small businesses during one of the world's biggest sporting events. and even as his allies try to walk it back, president trump is speaking further about his plan to move millions of palestinians out of the gaza strip. plus, an emotional goodbye big breakup that has warriors and fans pretty bummed out. but the excitement now building for a new warrior on the roster. much more news ahead. you're watching

more so than we saw with the last round of thunderstorms that moved through on tuesday. so there's the possibility that we could see at least some lightning strikes and the possibility of some rumbles of thunder later on today with some heavy rain. storm ranger is showing all of the heavier rain in the north bay. it's been pretty widespread there and starting to pick up elsewhere, so the commute is getting prett soggy for 101, as well as other routes in the north bay, and starting to see that rain coming down from san francisco, down the peninsula to woodside, and soon will be moving into palo alto, also stretching across the bay into oakland as well. so here's what to expect today. it's not an atmospheric river. it will be moving a little bit more quickly, but still could bring in some high amounts of rainfall with about a half to an inch and three quarters throughout today and into early tomorrow and later today, we could see those winds picking up 20 to 45mph. and with the ground already wet, that kind of wind could bring down some trees. so

that's a possibility. and then for the mountains, a few snowflakes there and then watching the creeks and streams, mainly in the north bay with that elevated landslide threat. so looking at the timeline, 8 to 9:00, a wave of heavy rain rolls through fairly quickly and then tapers off to some scattered activity throughout the day, off and on showers and then moving out by later tonight. but there still may be some lingering showers through early tomorrow and then really clearing out tomorrow night so we could see another inch to once again closer to an inch and a half in some spots. the coastal areas, some of the higher elevations will see those higher rainfall totals. after that, a much needed break. the weekend is looking nice. highs in the upper 50s, but it's going to be cold every morning, dipping to near freezing with some low to mid 30s, and our next chance of rain will be returning for the middle of next week. mike, you're seeing some rain on the golden gate bridge camera. you're talking about this chance of
