7:04 am
now? it feels like the excellent thing that happened right now, the parade just blocks from bourbon street, where a terrorist killed 14 people on new year's day. super bowl 59 lead federal coordinator says the attack altered this weekend's security plan. the governor sent additional bollards in. we brought in national guard and i brought in more personnel as well with over 100,000 people, including president trump. authorities will be fanned out across the city, in the sky and on the mississippi river and beyond, patrolling the water. boats like these will be able to get emergency personnel downtown in minutes.s. i the streets are jammed. federal authorities say in an emergency. state and local officials would make decisions with the nfl. for anyone who is skeptical of this city, of this state's ability to make sound judgment calls with an event like this, what would you tell that person? i would tell them that the city and the state have made concerted efforts, and are

continuing to make concerted efforts to keep their citizens safe. we've worked really well with them to make sure that they have the resources they need to do that. that was jesse kirsch reporting for us during the super bowl today. our sister station, telemundo 48, will be airing a spanish language telecast of the game. live coverage starts at 3 p.m. from new orleans. again, that's on telemundo 48. back here locally in new overnight. police on the peninsula need your help finding the person who hit a pedestrian and drove away. it happened around nine last night in san mateo. the man was walking near fashion island boulevard and south norfolk street under the highway 92 overpass. police say a car hit him and drove away. that man died at the scenene. he was just 56 years old. if you were in the area or have any information, you're asked to call san mateo police. the university of california student government is now suing the

department of education, and it all ties back to elon musk's department of government efficiency, or doge, gaining access to their private information, including student loan data. the suit, filed friday, accuses the department of education of illegally sharing the information of millions of student loan borrowers with elon musk and other unauthorized people within the doge. uc represents 230,000 undergrads, 70% of whom get federal financial aid. the data includes names, addresses, bank accounts, social security numbers, credit reports, and more. we spoke with an adjunct professor from stanford who teaches ai and ethics. if you want the name, the loan amount, the income amount, the location amount, it's going to be so defined. you're going to know who the person is, who they are, and what their dynamics are. and so really that's not really required for a cost cutting

exercise. this uc lawsuit comes as federal judge temporarily blocked musk's team from accessing u.s. treasury files. doge staffers gained access to confidential information last week, including social security numbers. this order blocks anyone who isn't a treasury worker from accessing that data. it also orders a copies of that data to be destroyed. will president trump's hiring freeze on federal jobs impacts the fire fight in california? last month, president trump signed an executive order preventing any new federal hires. that means there will be no onboarding for thousands of firefighters in advance of the summer fire season. california senator adam schiff responded by sending a letter to several u.s. agencies over concern that the hiring freeze will lead to a shortfall of seasonal firefighters for our state. schiff is calling on the government to exempt

firefighters from that federal hiring freeze. federal agencies typically hire more than 15,000 seasonal crews each year. federal investigators have recovered all major pieces of both aircraft involved in that deadly midair collision over the potomac river back on january 29th. the american airlines jet and a blackhawk helicopter collided, killing all 67 people on board. both investigators will use the recovered debris to see if any markings could reveal the angle of the crash. they're still looking into the altitude of the plane and helicopter at the time of that deadly collision. back here locally, people in the south bay are invited to join 1000 residents who've already trained to be prepared in the case of a disaster or emergency. it's a 20 hour training program in san jose called cert, which stands for community emergency response teams. first responders give

volunteers the skills to handle community disasters like fires or medical emergencies. yesterday, people trained at the san jose fire museum. they conducted drills and put their knowledge to the test. after volunteers complete the training, they typically meet up once a month. the program is free to anybody in san jose. a san francisco business owner who was shot right outside of his shop is now closing, but he says he's not abandoning the city. martin alev, who owns the vapor room near san francisco's upper market street, held a farewell celebration for his dispensary on ninth street yesterday. it will be closing down as he recovers after a major trauma. san francisco police released this surveillance video from january 27th. martin was outside of his shop taking a smoke break when a man rode up on an e-bike, pulled out a gun and pointed it at him. martin says the man shot him seven times. the gunman was
7:10 am
later killed in this shootout with san francisco police, who found a cache of weapons in his apartment, which happened to be in the same building as the vapor room. martin says he didn't know the man or doesn't know why he was shot. he hopes to reopen again after taking some time off. we're going to try again somehow, hopefully in another location, because i don't really want to work at this location just because of the memories. the vapor room has been around since 2002. it's been at that ninth street location for the last six years. it is almost ten past the hour on your sunday morning. we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with kristen welker, who

that could lead to counterterrorism. the white house then walked back some of the details trump laid out. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi, kristen. pretty in pink. great to see you this morning. trump has since defended those remarks on gaza and renewed his calls for u.s. takeover, though he did say thursday it would not involve american boots on the ground. i'm wondering if, you know, in talking to your experts this morning, if it's clear what's included in the details of this supposed plan. hi, kyra, thanks so much for your nice comments. noting i am wearing green earrings for my eagles tonight. good luck. good luck. in terms of what's included, thank you. in terms of what's included in the plan here. look, i asked national security advisor mike walz, one of my guests today, about that exact question. what is the specific plan for taking
7:14 am
or dealing with gaza once the war is over? one thing that was notable, it's clear it's still very muc a work in progress. but he noted that a lot of other countries have reached out and expressed interest in working with the united states, the global community, to address this crisis. now, what will that lookok like? hwouldn't get specific about which countries, but i did think it was notable. move the ball forward a little bit and underscored the fact that president trump's initial proposal of the united states taking over gaza, where he didn't leave, putting boots on the ground off the table and then walking that back, clearly it seems to be moving in a very different direction, kyra. all right. well, you always get the scoop, chrhristian, and we look forward to seeing you in about 45 minutes from now. and listen, i'm always a niners fan, but good luck to your eagles. we don't want those chiefs to win again. i'm sorry. just had to put it out sierra next year. next year for the niners. there you go. thanks. great to see

are going to nd those fluffy sweaters because it is so cold out there for their morning w a l k 30 degrees right now in petaluma. there's a lot of frost and freeze messages going on dublin right there. the sunshine is out, but we are at that freezing mark. and same story down here for san jose e at 38 degrees. but i expect these cold mornings to continue as long as we have the calm weather for at least through about tuesday. we'll talk about why that will change. meantime, san francisco 42 degrees on the maps. i think this is the warmest place on there right now, but our recovery will be fine as we go on into the afternoon. expect lots of sunshine and nearing that 60 degree mark for santa rosa. up in wine country, parts of concord and down here into the south bay, we'll do 57 right there through parts of palo alto and out in the coast. now here's where things are going to change. as we go on into tuesday. you're going to feel a little bit more of that wind picking up and the skies turning cloudy as we get another february storm in here. so let's get a better look at this down
7:20 am
into the bay area region. we could be looking at that wind and the rain picking up as we go on into late tuesday. by wednesday that commute looks soggy already. now this hit right there is looking more towards the central coast as we go on into that wednesday storm. but thursday that looks soggy and very disturbing as we could be looking at the chance of some landslides, some flooding. we've already gotten a big storm. mount tam, with last week's storm, got over 17in of rain, so we really don't need that rain right now. with the winds and everything picking up, that could look at a little bit of a tricky situation going on into our thursday plans, really covering the state, covering the sierra. so how much are we talking about here? let's pause it for wednesday. maybe a half an inch. that looks okay. reasonable. we can deal with that. but look at these contours just really lighting up our maps as we go on into that thursday and even possibly friday storm the concerns right now. like i mentioned, the coast, the mountain ranges there and the santa cruz mountains, those
7:21 am
colors, two to maybe three inches of rain. we'll see how san jose does with the rain shadowing effect, of course, but already a saturated ground up into the sierra. we are really recovering with a slow january, really ramping up these totals as we go on into the weekend of valentine's day, 2 to 3ft, with, of course, those gusty winds in the ridges. so just save it. maybe as we go on into sunday to get the skis and snowboards out. chilly mornings will continue. temperatures really not breaking out of those upper 50s for the next couple of days, and we prepare for some stormy weather there as we go on into wednesday. thursday. those showers on friday for valentine's day should start to be fizzling out there as we go on into san francisco and the peninsula. i think saturday looks better and i believe that parade, if i'm not mistaken. so we'll keep watching that and hope for everybody to have a good time with some drier conditions. yes. good that the rain is clearing up just in time
7:22 am
for the parade. i guess a rainy valentine's day gives you an excuse to stay indoors. save your money. yeah, save some money. all right. cinthia. well, our husbands would love to hear us say that, wouldn't they? at least mine would. cinthia. thanks. 21 past the hour. there is much more ahead on today in the bay coming up. jimmy butler sparking the warriors to a win with his debut at golden state. the double digit deficit they overcame to get the victory against the bulls.

making a great first impression with the warriors. the six time nba all-star, making his golden state debut in chicago. the bulls originally drafted butler in 2011. butler showing off his hops. he had 25 points in his first game with the warriors, but the bulls were hitting from everywhere and getting the kind bounces like this one from

three. chicago opened up a 24 point lead. then stephen curry took over. he dropped 24 of his game high 34 points in the third quarter. the warriors come roaring back. they beat the bulls 132 to 111. they're back to 500 on the season sparked by jimmy butler and his solid debut for the warriors. as soon as i got here, everybody was telling me to be myself, play my style of basketball and we'll make it work. i'll fit in just fine. so i went out there and did that to the best of my ability. don't touch me. and we got a dub. pretty fun having jimmy on our team. yeah, he's an amazing player. the skill, the strength, the ability to get to the free throw line and then just his presence out there. he's a he's a lion out there. you know he is. he is a force. he's a lion. and remember don't touch him. all right. the wait is almost over. we are just hours away from kickoff. the kansas city chiefs taking on the philadelphia eagles in super bowl 59. this is a rematch of
7:26 am
super bowl 57 won by the kansas city chiefs. the eagles would like to avenge that loss. the chiefs are chasing football immortality. a win, and they would be the first team in nfl history to repeat as super bowl champs. i think guys are ready to go. i mean, obviously it's a lot of build up into the super bowl and guys have done a lot of guys have done it before. but you can you continue to detail the details, you continue to work hard and all this build up, it makes you ready to go on super bowl sunday. have you went back and watched the tape of the last super bowl, and if so, what would you like to change going into this one? i'd like to win the game. i'd like to win the game at the shark tank. san jose taking on dallas. the sharks attack early. william buckland scores his 11th goal of the season, giving san jose the early one nothing lead. then the stars dominated the game. seven players scored. the stars beat the sharks 8 to 3. san jose has

and a grandmother of two. about five years ago, i was working full time, i had an awful lot of things to take care of. i needed all the help i could get. i saw the commercials for prevagen. i started taking it. and it helped! i was better able to take care of all those little details. people say to me, "barbara, you don't miss a beat." prevagen. for your brain. good morning. it is sunday, february 9th. just a live look. beautiful. look at the sun shining over the clear san francisco skyline as we wake up on super bowl sunday morning.
7:30 am
full of sunshine. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. we hope all of our viewers are somewhere safe and warm because it is literally below freezing in some of those spots behind you. and just in the last 30s some numbers keep on coming down. example number one up there in calistoga, it went down to 29. it just bounced back to 30, but it is just freezing through the bay area this morning. 29 in danville, boulder creek, 40 right there through san francisco. so we're going to exclude the city out of the frost and the freeze messages. but 32 right now in morgan hill. our recovery is nice though. we go on into the day checking in on pleasanton upper 50s, lots of sunshine for our sunday plans, and we go into the afternoon with those cold mornings and nights continuing once again. but that moisture that will come in as we go on through the middle part of the week will help the numbers recover in the overnights just a little bit, but bring about some stormy
7:31 am
weather the second half of the week. so i'll be back with the timeline. who could get the most of it? and what i'm watching coming up in about ten minutes. kira. all right, cinthia, thanks. well, as we've been talking about, kickoff for super bowl 59 is at 330 this afternoon. and we want to take you live out there to caesars superdome as the kansas city chiefs are looking for that three peat super bowl win. and the philadelphia eagles are looking for a little revenge for their super bowl loss to the chiefs two years ago. and no super bowl sunday uld be complete without a check in with my friend today in the bay's jay gray in the big easy hosting its record tying 11th super bowl. and as always, you're cooking your breakfast. you're visiting with us in the bay. jay, what what's happening out there today? kari. you're the best. yeah. we're cooking a little breakfast burritos this morning. breakfast tacos. we've got a we've got some chorizo going. we've got some hash browns, we've got scrambled eggs. and
7:32 am
since the sun came up, we added some brats to the mix as well. so it's never really too early for a tailgate. and especially especially here in new orleans where they've been having a big time all week. it's just been a very cool scene, to be honest. a lot of people coming down, so many people that come here don't really care about either team,'t but want to be a part of the experience and experience new orleans as well. and so they are coming through. look, my stuff's blowing all over the place. i'm going to start a fire. and so they're just having a great time here and will continue to i would assume, through kickoff. i think if you talk to some people last night over in the french quarter, they said, what game? there's a game here, but there is a game just behind us here. and as you talked about, it should be a really good one. we should see the chiefs and eagles play a tight game they did two years ago. it's going to be neat to see how it all comes out here. i want to know who you got in this one. who do you think is going to win? i know my

journalistic ethics keep me impartial, but i just talked to kristen welker and i did say i hope her eagles win because, i mean, spread the wealth. chiefs let someone else in for once, but i'm sure i'm getting boos from people at home right now as i admit that i'm a 49ers girl through and through. so like you said, people in new orleans are like, what game? of course, it's just a regular day in new orleans for the party people out there. jay, i won't even ask, what's in your red cup? you are right, but i hope you have a lot of fun out there. we always love seeing you. stay safe, my friends. until next time, sierra. thanks again jay. while the niners aren't in the big game. womp womp. bay area leaders have a very important reason to be there in new orleans. they're getting the handoff tomorrow because levi's stadium is hosting super bowl 60 next year. i got the chance to speak with some of our bay area contingent. joining me now to talk about super bowl 60 are san

jose mayor matt mahan and bay area host committee president and ceo colleen jan mohammed. welcome, you two. thanks for being awake with us this morning. you're there on someat of a reconnaissance mission, so to speak. colleen, let me begin with you. what are you paying attention to in new orleans to bring back for the super bowl experience here in the bay area next year? yeah. it's so good to be here. and welcome to new orleans digitally. we have been here for a few days now since tuesday. the nfl puts together a pretty formal host city program where the future host city comes in. we have two days of meetings and they literally walk us through everything. we see all of the official nfl venues. we have a full classroom day where we go through, you know, the things that you don't see and you don't visit. and so i'm taking notes on a lot of things. we have legal pads full right now. the nfl has expanded super bowl exponentially since the last
7:35 am
time it was in the bay. so there's a lot to learn as we think about bringing it back next year. yeah, i so vividly remember that ten years ago. mayor mahan, if i can go to you now, it must be thrilling. a thrilling time for you. and really everyone here in the bay area as we prepare not only for the super bowl next year, but also the world cup in 2026. we recently counted down 500 days until the world cup kicks off. obviously, we want to focus on the super bowl right now, but i'm wondering, you know, how is san jose planning to provide for the influx of all those people, the athletes and the fans? and, you know, i also have to mention in new orleans, are you taking notes on safetyy there? yeah, im taking lots of notes. we're incredibly proud in san jose and really the entire bay area region to host both super bowl and world cup in the same year. i don't think anyone else has ever done that. so you're right. i'm walking around with a notepad, paying particular attention to things like mobility. when people land at one of our three international
7:36 am
airports, how do we make sure they feel welcome? they know where they're going. we get them to their hotel and then out into our communities to experience the incredible diversity, food, music, culture that we have in the bay area. they're doing a great job here in new orleans. i mean, they are really showing off their local culture. and so we're taking a lot of notes and thinking about how we highlight just the incredible cultural diversity and food scene that we have in the bay area. i want to ask you about monday. the super bowl handoff is officially happening. do you know, either of you what that entails? yeah, it's going to be exciting. i was joking with mayor mahan before we came on is it's an actual handoff. there's a football, so we're going to make sure we practice before we. that's right. no fumbling. there's no fumbling the handoff. but yeah, we will have at 8:00 local time here, the official handoff between the new orleans contingent and the bay area, the commissioner facilitates that event. they will release the super bowl 60 logo, which is very exciting. and we will accept on behalf of the
7:37 am
commissioner and new orleans, the torture, the football. and the clock starts ticking for the bay. mayor mahan one last thing before we go. what are you personally going to do to ensure that the 49ers are in the super bowl next year? no, i'm just kidding. thank you. i'll be cheering them on same, same. i want to thank you both so much for your time this morning. i know you're working hard out there, so thanks for making some time for us. colleen jan muhammad of the bay area host committee and san jose mayor matt mahan, thanks so much. and a reminder, super bowl 60 is february 8th, 2026, a week from a year from yesterday. as for super bowl 59, today there is a spanish language telecast. that version will air on our sister station, telemundo 48. live coverage starts at 3 p.m. in spanish from new orleans. meanwhile, governor gavin newsom is setting aside $50 million to help defend immigrants amid and

oppose mass deportation orders. newsom signed two laws on friday. one allocates $25 million for the state department of justice to fight legal battles against the federal government. the other earmarks $25 million for legal groups defending immigrants facing deportation during president trump's first term. the two sparred over climate laws, water policy and immigrant rights. it has been one month since san francisco's new mayor, danielle lurie, took office, and he marked the occasion by joining hundreds of volunteers with refuse. refuse. that's an organization dedicated to cleaning up the streets. lurie and his team helped pick up trash around van ness avenue and bay street. there are about 50 volunteers in his group, or 80 volunteers in his group. organizers say it means a lot to get the spotlight from the mayor, who did promise to clean up san francisco during his campaign. cleanups are just an easy kind of intro into civic

engagement and community service, because it's literally the easiest thing you can do any person, children do it. it's all ages can pick up litter that they find on the ground, and it's super impactful because a lot of thatoes end up in the bay and the ocean and causes pollution, especially those single use plastics. and did you know there's at least one cleanup in every san francisco zip code every weekend across the bay in oakland? they're also getting cleaned up ahead of the nba all star game festivities, which begin on friday. interim mayor kevin jenkins teamed up with a number of organizations to pick upp trash, clean up, graffiti and more. jenkins says it's a labor of love. another cleanup event is set for this coming thursday, february 13th. the bay area host committee planning all the efforts for all star weekend, say they are ready to kick off the weekend with a bang. the all star game actually has a really great cultural vibe around it. there's a lot of
7:40 am
things that happen on the court that you'll see, but a lot happens outside of that, and so you'll see activity all the way from the south bay and san jose through to oakland, as you mentioned, even further north. i think right now it's really fine tuning of the details. there's fan events at moscone center. there'll be a lot of b2b and hospitality events as well. several all star weekend events are set to take place in oakland as well, including the celebrity all star game and the hbcu classic, as well as moscone center, as she mentioned, and of course, chase center. still to come on today in the bay. just shy of 740 addressing safety concerns ahead of lunar new year festivities. we'll tell you what san francisco city leaders are doing as we count down to two
