year. we're able to learn from the past and get some nice, new pieces and get over that hump. >> eagles' quarterback cooper dejean returned a score of his own. that was just one of three turnovers by kc's superstar. the 40-22 blowout earned the eagles their second lombardi trophy in franchise history. fans filled the streets in philly after the game where a parade is expected in the coming days. a date for the celebration has not yet been announced. president trump made history at the big game last night, becoming the first sitting united states president to attend the super bowl. in a pregame interview, the commander in chief predicted that the chiefs would win. nbc's alice barr joins me now. president trump made a lot of headlines before and after the game. >> reporter: good morning, frances. that's right. while he was flying to new orleans, president trump spoke to reporters aboard air force

one. he was again focussed on trade policies. president trump continued to threaten our neighbors to the north, claiming that canada is not a viable country without u.s. trade. the president also teased that new tariffs will be announced today on all steel and aluminum imports into the u.s. >> we'll also be announcing steel tariffs on monday. any steel coming into the united states is going to have a 25% tariff. aluminum too. >> reporter: president trump sat for a pregame interview. he pushed back on the judges who have temporarily blocked efforts by elon musk and his department of government efficiency. the president defended musk, who's been helping to slash the spending of federal agencies. >> bottom line, you say you trust him. >> trust elon? oh, he's not gaining anything. in fact, i wonder how he can devote the time to it. he's so into it. but i told him to do that.

then i'm going to tell him very soon, like, maybe in 24 hours, to go check the department of education. he's going to find the same thing. then i'm going to go to the military. let's check the military. >> reporter: after the super bowl, president trump announced what could be the end of the penny. saying he has instructed the treasury secretary to stop producing the coins, because minting them costs more than they're worth. meanwhile, the trump administration will be in court today. there will be a federal hearing about the mass buyouts offered to federal workers at federal agencies. labor unions are requesting a restraining order to block the program for a longer time. >> alice, thank you. discussions on the second phase of the gaza cease-fire are happening today. both in doha and jerusalem. talks take place in the shadow of president trump's proposal to, quote, take over gaza, something the president doubled down on over the weekend.

>> we'll make it into a very good site for future development by somebody. we'll let other countries develop parts of it. it will be beautiful. people can come from all over the world and live there. but we're going to take care of the palestinians. we're going to make sure they live beautifully and in harmony and in peace and that they're not murdered. >> for the latest, let's turn to daniele hamamdjian. how much of the president's outburst impacting the diplomacy here? >> reporter: good morning, frances. well, as is often the case, with president trump, it remains unclear if this was actually proposed as a negotiating tactic to try to put pressure on hamas. there are three weeks left in the first phase of the deal. and while, yes, the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, is sending a delegation to qatar for talks on phase two, the israeli team includes low-level officials, prompting speculation that mr. netanyahu, who doesn't want to extend the truce, as it might bring down his right wing

coalition government, remember, there are some members of this government who want the fighting to resume after phase one is complete. despite so much uncertainty, phase one is still going according to plan. over the weekend, we saw more hostages released in exchange for prisoners, and the israeli military pulling back from a key corridor of gaza, the netzarim corridor. reconstruction, which will take years, of course, would not happen until phase three. but talks of forcing the displacement of hundreds of thousands of palestinians could simply put an end to the negotiations. the idea of relocating the population has been flatly rejected by neighboring egypt and jordan, as well as the wider arab world. but, in a new twist to the proposal, benjamin netanyahu is now suggesting that saudi arabia carve out a piece of its own country for a palestinian state. the idea slammed by the arab kingdom, where officials say the palestinians cannot be expelled.

frances? >> danielle, thank you. a weekend winter storm battered the midwest and northeast. cities are digging out after some areas got more than a foot of snow. and this is only the beginning of back-to-back storms. here's nbc's maya eaglin. >> reporter: the massive cleanup after the winter storm that slammed millions. >> please be careful. have good traction. take little steps. >> reporter: up to 14 inches fell in upstate new york. maine and vermont saw more than 12 inches. thousands of flights were delayed across the country. some freezing rain coated the snow resulting in this pileup in minneapolis. these cars sliding in rockland, new york and this truck in northern indna going off the road. one system developing over the southern plains monday will likely have snow falling in the ohio valley and mid atlantic on tuesday. right behind it, a second snowstorm brewing over the plains early wednesday and dropping a wintry mix over the

great lakes and northeast again by thursday. bill with the public works department says those back-to-back storms could put a strain on snow removal departments. >> we go through about 300 ton of salt per storm. >> reporter: wow. >> that's a lot of salt. >> reporter: and, is there enough left in the reserve for the upcoming storm? >> it will be close, but we're going to get some ore. >> reporter: residents spending the day clearing out driveways, bracing for the next snowfall. more snow. what do you think about that? >> if it's fluffy snow, then i'll probably like it. then, if it's hard snow, i don't think i'll like it. >> reporter: it will be a little tough to shovel out, right? >> yes. now, let's get the timing of that second round of winter weather with meteorologist denise isaac. went through the first time around. now we've got another one. >> i know. we're looking at our third

storm, frances, in less than a week. and right now, it is brewing in the southern plains. it will bring some cold rain towards dallas today then move across oklahoma. and eventually starts to spread east, falling from places like kentucky, spreading all the way into west virginia and virginia by tomorrow. biggest impacts will be in the mid atlantic, where we could get anywhere between 3 to 6 inches of snow. the bluegrass state, 1 to 3 inches. on the southern side, it will be heavy rain, where 1 to 3 inches is a possibility. and flash flooding is also possible. then, on wednesday, here comes our fourth storm system, moving across memphis, knoxville and dropping quite a bit of snow in chicago as well as places like michigan, where we could get anywhere r is filtering down sou

versus plastic. president trump pledging to ban paper straws this morning, undoing a biden era initiative to phase-out single-use plastics in federal government. how far could the president go to bring plastic back? here's george solis. >> reporter: it's a debate americans won't suck up and move on from. pesky paper straws. >> this is one of the most inefficient designs i've ever experienced in my whole 24 years of existence on this planet. >> reporter: or potentially polluting plastic ones. president trump now promising to sign an executive order undoing biden-era policies tphase-out plastic straws and other single-use plastics across the federal government. he cit on social media "back to plastic." it wouldn't make them illegal, but it would prevent the federal government from buying it.

several cities and states have introduced their own laws, with many offering exceptions for plastics if the customer asks for them. on the south beach, the use of plastic straws has been banned since 2019. here, the straw wars in full swing. >> it's just incredible that someone would want to destroy our environment. >> reporter: you guys are not in favor of rescinding paper straws? >> of course not. >> it's definitely tougher to use a non-plastic straw. but you got to get used to it. it's better for the environment. >> reporter: but across social media, paper straws not particularly popular. >> who even thought paper straws were a good idea? i call them the 15-second straw. >> reporter: it's been a big issue for the president. >> now it has to be a paper straw, so maybe it doesn't work. you know, the paper straws come wrapped in cellophane. >> reporter: environmental advocates highlight the immense toll of single-use plastics on
