"early today" starts right now. good morning. glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. on sunday, the philadelphia eagles dominated super bowl lix, flying to victory against the kansas city chiefs. after their close, thrilling loss in the big game two years ago, the birds got swift pay back. head coach nick sirianni got emotional about his first super bowl win. >> this is the ultimate team game. you can't be great without the greatness of others. >> well, the chiefs' defense kept saquon barkley in check. they had no answers for jalen hurts, who channeled his inner excellence with two touchdown passes and a brotherly shove in another. >> i've been able to use every

experience and learn from it. the good, the bad, all of it, using it as fuel to pursue my own greatness. and i think i couldn't do any of these things without the guys around me. we have a special group this year. we're able to learn from the past and get some nice new pieces and get over that hump. >> eagles' quarterback cooper dejean even got in on the fun, intercepting patrick mahomes and returning it for a score of his own. that was just one of three turnovers by kc's superstar who was stifled by philly's pass rush all night long. the 40-22 blowout earned the eagles their second lombardi trophy in franchise history. fans filled the streets in philly where a parade is expected in the coming days. a date for that celebration has not yet been announced. president trump made history at the big game last night, becoming the first sitting united states president to

attend the super bowl. in a pregame interview, the commander in chief projected that the chiefs would win. alice barr joins me now. president trump made a lot of headlines before and after the game. >> reporter: good morning, frances. he did. while he was flying to new orleans, president trump spoke with reporters aboard air force one. he was again focussed on trade policies. president trump continued to threat our neighbors to the north, claiming that canada is not a viable country without u.s. trade. the president also teased that new tariffs will be announced today on all steel and aluminum imports into the u.s. >> we'll also be announcing steel tariffs on monday. any steel coming into the united states is going to have a 25% tariff. aluminum too. >> reporter: president trump sat for a pregame interview. he pushed back on the judges who have temporarily blocked efforts by elon musk and his department of government efficiency. the president defended musk,

who's been helping to slash the spending of federal agencies. >> bottom line, you say you trust him. >> trust elon? oh, he's not gaining anything. in fact, i wonder how he can devote the time to it. he's so into it. but i told him to do that. then i'm going to tell him very soon, like, maybe in 24 hours, too go check the department of education. he's going to find the same thing. then i'm going to go to the military. let's check the military. >> reporter: after the super bowl, president trump announced what could be the end of the penny. saying he has instructed the treasury secretary to stop producing the coins, because minting them costs more than they're worth. meanwhile, the trump administration will be in court today. there will be a federal hearing about the mass buyouts offered at federal agencies. labor unions are requesting a restraining order to further block the program for a much longer period of time, frances. >> alice, thank you.

discussions on the second phase of the gaza cease-fire are happening today, both in doha and jerusalem. talks take place in the shadow of president trump's proposal to, quote, take over gaza, something the president doubled down on over the weekend. >> we'll make it into a very good site for future development by somebody. we'll let other countries develop parts of it. it will be beautiful. people can come from all over the world and live there. but we're going to take care of the palestinians. we're going to make sure they live beautifully and in harmony and in peace and that they're not murdered. >> for the latest, let's turn to daniele hamamdjian. how much of the president's outbursts impacting the diplomacy here? >> reporter: good morning, frances. well, as is often the case with president donald trump, it remains unclear if this was actually proposed as a negotiating tactic to try to put more pressure on hamas. there are three weeks left in the first phase of this deal, and yes, the israeli prime

minister is sending a delegation to qatar for talks on phase two. that israeli team includes low-level officials, prompting speculation that mr. netanyahu doesn't really want to extend the truce. remember that it might bring down his right wing coalition government if this goes ahead to phase two. some members of his cabinet want the fighting to resume. but despite so much uncertainty, phase one is still going according to plan. over the weekend, more hostages were released in exchange for prisoners, as the israeli military pulled back from a key corridor of gaza called the netzarim corridor. construction of course will take years, and it wouldn't happen until phase three. but talks of forcing the displacement of hundreds of thousands of palestinians could simply put an end to the negotiations. the idea of relocating the population has been flatly rejected by jordan and egypt and

the wider arab world, but a new twist, frances in this proposal. the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, is now suggesting saudi arabia carve out a piece of its own country for a palestinian state. that idea slammed by the arab kingdom, where officials say the palestinian people cannot be expelled. frances? >> danielle, thank you. now to at least a dozen people who were hurt in a fire and explosion at an industrial plant in northwestern pennsylvania. five firefighters are among the injured. all are expected to survive. it's not known what caused the explosion. nbc news reached out to the facility's parent company, parker, for comment but did not a shelter in place order has been lifted but officials continue to monitor air quality in the area. a storm brought snow to millions in the northeast causing a pileup on a minneapolis highway. with more cars sliding off the

plains, with some cold rain from dallas into oklahoma. then this system spreads east. we'll be tracking snow from louisville all the way to alexandria, virginia while raleigh could see ice first and then transition to heavy rain. as far as snowfall amounts, 3 to 6 inches possible. d.c., delaware and falls church, virginia. and once we take a look at the next storm system that comes in that happens wednesday. wednesday night bringing rain across the mid atlantic this time around, while chicago, detroit, you'll get to see some heavy snow. boston will start out as sno and w missouri. pretty cold in texas, where dallas today, 43 degrees with heavy rain, while 80 degrees in

for government efficiency. now this of course is an agency that was set up in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis to protect consumers. some of the recent efforts include reducing credit card fees and also removing medical debt from people's credit reports. but it has become, it's also an independent agency, which sits within the fed, but it has come under criticism, particularly, from republicans who accuse it of overreach and unfairly restricting banks. now the new chief of thehe cfpb russell vought said he was ordering staff to, quote, cease all supervision and examination activity and that he was halting the flow of fresh funding to the agency. now staff are being put on fear of being put on administrative leave as what's happening with the usaid. there are roughly 1,700 staff at
