in the upper 20s and low 30s for parts of the north bay. napa you're stepping out the door to 31 degrees. let's head to walnut creek where we're in the mid 30s right now. it is clear, and temperatures will be in the 30s through 8:00. so there may be some frost on the windshield. as you're about to head off for work. maybe allow some extra time for that scraping the frost off or letting the vehicle warm up before you drive to work. it's going to be in the mid 50s and we're headed for the upper 50s for today, as we are still a little bit cooler than what's normal for this time of year. and mike, you've been tracking our monday morning drive. yes, some of that fun marcus was talking about over here. the bay bridge toll plaza folks are happily waiting in line here. they're happy because not all lanes are full and traffic is moving. once you get past the toll plaza and the metering lights. we do have a typical build here and a little slowing breaks. starting to get tapped through richmond right past the racetrack. typical pattern here. highway 37 highway 4 been most consistent with the slower drive and building two. 42 though, stayed in the green zone. so is

the walnut creek interchange. so that's good stuff for contra costa county alameda county. no real incidents and no slowing really outside of the altamont pass. then there's that build for the south bay, typical coming northbound on 101, but that's starting to ease up from that first build as well. back to you. all right. let's keep the fun going. thanks, mike. with developing for you this morning, a new promise for a new tax on imported goods from president trump. this all follows his visit to new orleans, where he actually became the first sitting president to attend a super bowl game. today in the bay's alice barr. live for us in washington this morning. and alice, along with teasing that new tariffs there. the president is also defending federal cost cutting moves made by billionaire elon musk. marcus. that's right. and he's also pushing back against some court interventions that have come up because of lawsuits filed over some of those musk actions. for example, there's a federal hearing today about the paused mass buyouts. federal workers, labor unions are trying to get that program fully

blocked. president trump returning to washington overnight after becoming the first sitting president to attend a super bowl, making news before he steppedn the stadium with a new tariff announcement on imported steel and alumim. any steel coming into the united states is going to have a 25% tariff, and promising more tariffs are coming on countries that tax. american exports, the growing list poisedo potentially bowl pre-show interview. the president defended elon musk's cost cutting moves to slash federal agencies. bottom line you say you trust him, trust elon musk. oh, he's not gaining anything. in fact, i wonder how he can devote the time to it. he's so into it indicating the departments of education and defense are next in the crosshairs and pushing back against judges who have temporarily blocked some of musk's department of government efficiency actions and access. i

disagree with it 100%. i think it's crazy. and we have to solve the efficiency problem. as vice president j.d. vance wrote, judges aren't allowed to control the executive's legitimate power, all adding to democrats alarm about the separation of powers. we are at a point where we are basically on the cusp of a constitutional crisis, seeing this administration taking steps that are so clearly illegal, with democrats unwilling to cosign the trump administration's moves, a bipartisan government funding bill is in peril. building toward a potential government shutdown next month. in another announcement overnight, president trump said he's instructed the treasury secretary to stop producing pennies because they cost more to mint than they're worth, saying he'll rip waste out of the federal budget a penny at a time, marcus, as they say, a penny for your thoughts. maybe we'll have them. but. but something else to talk about, alex, i know the president

actually spoke about several, several pieces of his foreign policy over the weekend, from gaza to ukraine there. can you talk to a little bit more about that? yeah. so on gaza, president trump doubled down on his controversial vision for that war torn, war torn territory. he said that we're committed in the u.s. to buying and owning gaza, and that perhaps other middle eastern countries would assist in the rebuilding. he also confirmed that he's spoken by phone with russian president vladimir putin at least once, and that he intends to have more conversations and would likely meet with him in person when the time is right. and then finally, on canada, he's referenced a couple of times the idea of our neighbor to the north becoming the 51st state. and he did say when asked about this on that fox news interview that he means it, and that he thinks canada would be better off as part of the u.s. very interesting there. well, alice barr in washington for us this morning, alice. thank you. we're moving to the bay area forward as the countdown is on for super bowl 60 at levi's stadium. this

year's host city, new orleans, will hand things off to the bay area host committee this morning. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us now with what will happen kris a lot going on. yeah, i'm wearing my levi's red this morning. they are probably still sweeping up the confetti in new orleans this morning. but in just a few hours, the nfl will hold a ceremony to hand things from new orleans to the bay area. and that starts early, early today. now, this year, the bay area and in the bay area, football fans had to watch the super bowl this way at bars and restaurants and at home. next year, tens of thousands of fans will get to see that game in person at levi's stadium. ten years after hosting super bowl 50, levi's will host super bowl 60 l x as san jose mayor matt mahan is part of the bay area host committee. he and the ceo are part of that delegation in new orleans for that handover. i'm walking around with a notepad, paying particular attention to things like mobility. when people land at one of our three international airports, how do we make sure

they feel welcome? they know where they're going. we get them to their hotel and then out into our communities to experience the incredible diversity, food, music culture that we have in the bay area. a south bay businesses are hoping for an even bigger piece of the pie this year. they say san francisco got, you know, more than their share. of course, the south bay is biased, but last year. so the handover ceremony happening right now as we speak, that is nfl commissioner roger goodell. and you see the ceo of the bay area host committee there on the right hand side of your screen. so they will be talking about that handover and getting things ready. and i mean they've been getting ready. but this is now just like starting the clock. yeah it takes a lot of preparation. yeah it does. but i can tell you we are ready here we are ready. and the really nice thing about the bay area host committee is that they're trying to make sure that the vendors are truly local businesses instead of like, you know, a firm that comes in and does whatever. so like our local businesses really stand to

his first presidency as well. this is a way he feels to protect the american steel industry. he also opposes the purchase of u.s. steel by japan's nippon steel. now, u.s. steel says that's the only way it will survive. president biden also opposed the purchase as well. white house says there will be punitive tariffs announced today. against who? how much? still a little fuzzy. so we're going to stay on top of that for you. friday we found out american hiring slowed quite a bit. the latest jobs number showed 143,000 jobs added to the economy last month. compare that to a seasonally adjusted quarter million the month before. but the economy continues to chug along. the unemployment picture still looks great. the economy is still producing robust numbers of jobs, and the outlook is looking great for the soft landing. all right. that said, a few thousand meta employees just opened their emails and found

out they've been cut. a memo first seen by reuters says those who will be laid off were informed at 5 a.m. our time, these are expected cuts. we just didn't know who. some more thoughts on the penny. president trump says he's ordered the u.s. mint to stop making them, because it costs the government more to make a penny than it's worth, and few people use them. the president doesn't actually have the power to decide what kind of money gets printed, at least not according to the constitution. the other problem if you have fewer pennies, you're going to need more nickels, which cost even more to mint more than $0.05. it's also debatable whether the administration has the power to close the consumer financial protection bureau, but that seems to be what happened, at least temporarily. elon musk tweeting cfp. rest in peace. now, as we've been discussing, it's important to watch today through this week how musk and trump respond to some of these court orders, like keeping them out of treasury. right. if they do it, you know, if they may

philadelphia, where the eagles fans celebrated late into the night after the eagles dominating super bowl win over the chiefs. if you were one of the tens of millions who watched, you probably know this already, but it wasn't much of a game. the eagles took control early in kansas city, never mounted a challenge. philly quarterback jalen hurts threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. he won the most valuable player award and called it a team win. the eagles took it 40 to 22. fly. eagles fly. well, football's biggest night also packed in some superstar performances. that includes one moving performance from lady gaga. i'll be. right here. hold my hand. i'm. that woman can sing. i'm gonna give ito her now. lady gaga, multi-talented artist. they're making a

from the halftime show. you saw right there last night, seven days before that. took home five grammys there. clean sweep for the week for him that it is all right. kendrick lamar is a compton native. but you know what the bay area well represented. take a look right here on your screen right here. so right there behind him that is the turf dance crew based out of oakland. that's nice to see right. yeah, that is west coast. yeah. west side. love that. next year it's going to be here. that's right. yeah. bringing it back home to the west side. all right. i want to see that handoff and starting to build up that excitement for next year. for it to come to the bay area. all right. let's talk about the weather and what we're seeing now. maybe what we'll see this time next year. it's going to be a cold start. it's all clear. and we are in between storm systems. so it looks good for us. but we do have to deal with some dangerously cold temperatures as we've dipped down into the 20s and some of these areas shaded in purple, the lighter blue. that's where we have a frost advisory. that means that temperatures may be

just above freezing, but there still may be some frost developing on some of the elevated surfaces. here's a look at our temperatures right now. we're at 36 in oakland, 28 degrees in danville. that's one of the colder temperatures on the map here. and we're seeing some 20s as well in parts of the north bay, while san francisco is at 42 degrees. but then when we take a look atat the hig for later today, it will be in the upper 50s. and then tomorrow, just a little bit cooler as we get more clouds coming in mostly mid 50s, and we will have a cool week ahead as wednesday. we're only going to make it into the low 50s in some spots, but that's also when the rain arrives starting on wednesday and then on thursday the rain gets heavier as we get an atmospheric river coming in. there will be flooding possible by the end of the week, so we want to start making those plans. the preparations in advance of this storm system. also, there will be an elevated landslide threat, mainly in the north bay and the coastal mountains. for the sierra, we could see about 2 to 3ft of snow between wednesday and friday. so

that's when the bulk of this storm system is coming in, and we can see the couple of days of rain that will be with us. and then a little bit of a break on saturday before another storm system arrives on sunday. so we're going to stay in a very active storm pattern here. and we talked about that possibility of flooding, mainly because in the bay area for these areas shaded in pink, we could see two and a half to three inches of rainfall all across the bay area. and a look at the 7-day forecast shows temperatures will be chilly, with it near freezing again tomorrow morning. but after that, once the clouds and the rain moves in, we'll see temperatures starting out in the low 40s and heading for the upper 50s each day. mike, you had a crash reported in san jose? yeah, north 101 at trimble. so that's just north of here. this is our shot just north of 680. lots of north northbound traffic flow. the crash at trimble, there you go. is on the map. it hasn't materialized with any slowing because found out the vehicle involved is over on the shoulder, out of lanes. and that's good news. the

francisco now at 40 degrees, while it's 35, in walnut creek and in san jose. a look at dublin, where we are below freezing right now. we're seeing that across the tri-valley with a gradual warm up and sunshine in today's forecast. mike, you're seeing traffic building up in richmond. yeah. well you were showing 580 in dublin. i was looking at the traffic behind your temperatures over here. this is 580 out of richmond. these folks are gathering up and leaving richmond. there's the wait there. there's slowing down the eastshore freeway through that same area. the build is on for contra costa county, alameda county as well, toward the bay bridge, where the metering lights are on and the toll plaza is full anywhere south of there. looking pretty standard. a little brake tap going on southbound 880 through san leandro, down in toward, you know, hayward, but just shy of fremont. everything's back at speed. there is one disabled vehicle, north 101 on the shoulder over at trimble, and there's not a lot of slowing, but there was some slowing that picked up. i think a crew has just arrived. we'll send it right back over to you, marcus. all right, mike, thank you. well, new overnight oakland police so far not commenting on

what appears to be a police cruiser with at least one bullet hole. the witnesses telling us that the officers shut down that area and an empty car also remained at the scene. this is all unfolding a little after midnight in east oakland. this is where seminary runs into 580. so far, there are no reports of anyone being hit by gunfire. of course, we're still looking for answers as we await an update from police later tay in the south bay, students plan to take action to stick up for undocumented immigrants and send a message to president trump's administration. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live this morning. so what do they have in mind? bob, we're talking about a walkout at wilcox high in santa clara. good morning to a student there. tells us they plan to walk out at 105 today. that would be right after their lunch. right before fifth period to protest president trump's plans for mass deportations. the organizer of this demonstration tells us that about half the students at wilcox high are either children of immigrants or

immigrants themselves. over the weekend, several dozen protesters gathered near san jose's alum rock and king to protest ice activity in the in federal deportations. theye are calling for an end to the white house's immigration policies, and are urging more people in this country to do something to help the migrant community, either getting involved with the rapid response network of santa clara county become first responders when there's ice activity. we also want to encourage people to get involved with may day, you know, show solidarity with immigrant workers on international workers day. members of the silicon valley immigration committee organized this protest, one of several protests since this past friday in the south bay. one more note the immigration institute of the bay area wants to make sure you know your rights. if you're detained or

all right, so let's just say the bay area host committee right now has a lot on its plate there. and this morning we are actually moving the bay area forward on busy sports week ahead. that's right. the nba's all star weekend is about to tip off in san francisco today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in the city by the bay. and ginger, this is the first time the all star game has been in the bay area in 25 years. and that's when the warriors still played at the oakland arena. and the oakland arena will still have a nice role in this weekend's all star weekend festivities. laura and marcus. but this is really a big opportunity for the bay area, for the bay area host committee, as well as san francisco to really score big from everything that's been going on and change the narrative of what's been kind of looming over the city in recent years. the city previously projected that there will be $350, $350 million, i should say, an economic impact leading up to this weekend, with

thousands of jobs created, as well as bringing in more than 100,000 people. so that's a lot. as you guys have been talking about to look forward to as this weekend approaches, and there's also a lot for basketball fans. it all kicks off on friday at the moscone center for something called the nba crossover. that's got a lot of interactive fan events. you can also get merch, see some basketball courts and play around on them and meet some players signing autographs. there's a lot of basketball throughout the weekend as well, because there's a celebrity game in oakland at the oakland arena, as well as a rising stars challenge at the chase center. both of those are happening on friday as well. so my favorite night, however, is saturday, which includes the skills challenge, the three point contest, and all the drama of the dunk contest. the big game is on sunday, but it has a different format this year to play a little more defense, a little more deep. there will also be concerts all three ghts of all star weekend at pier 48 that starts on friday,

street and south van ness. four bystanders were injured. all are expected to fully recover. that car crashed outside of napper tandy. this is a popular pub in the mission district. some city leaders there wondering if police unnecessarily put people at rk. so the concern for me is, is this worth that policy? and if, if, if it's true it was related to a theft, is that worth sending six people to the hospital? but on something like this person, you know, fails to yield to a police officer and we have a job to do. now, police say the two women in that car ran from the scene before officers arrested them. they were being pursued after officers indicated that their car from a theft in berkeley was involved, and the suspects ignored orders to pull over. happening tomorrow, fremont leaders are expected to finalize their plan to crack down on public camping. council members have already approved a new plan to criminalize not only camping on public property, but aiding, abetting or hiding illegal

making a lot of news headlines. he makes a lot of headlines. i mean, they're both famous for liking attention, right. but it's musk who's really taking washington by storm. he says he shut down the consumer financial protection bureau. this is the same agency that caught wells fargo. tricking customers made sure banks gave mortgages to qualified americans. secured more than $17 billion in payback and fines for american consumers scammed by big companies. musk a big subject on this week's meet the press as well. but colonel, my question is, is elon musk the right person for that job, given his billions of dollars in contracts with the defense department? how can he cut an agency where he has billions of dollars at stake? well, look, all of the appropriate firewalls will be in place. now, the appropriate firewalls would be some third party deciding if musk has a conflict of interest. but president trump has fired many of the inspectors general who act as those watchdogs. and

carpet coverage starting at four years, that it has provided so many laughs for so many people. no kidding. and they continue to give laughs that it does. it will be fun. can't wait. all right. well i can't wait to sunshine. yeah we're going to we're pretty much there. but that doesn't mean it's warm. i was going to say to warm us up. hopefully we are seeing a lot of sunshine now. but take a look at just what's offshore, this large storm system that's going to be coming in for the middle of the week and bringing in another dose of some heavy rainfall. we'll have a quick moving system on wednesday with that atmospheric river arriving on thursday with some moderate to heavy rainfall and even flooding possible, with an elevated landslide threat, mainly in the north bay and the coastal mountains. while the sierra will see about 2 to 3ft of snow. so we are seeing that quick round of rain on wednesday in the forecast, but then we'll turn our attention very quickly to that larger storm system, that atmospheric river that's offshore on saturday, which is a

very important day for the bay area. i know we have a lot going on. it looks dry, but there will be another storm system coming in on sunday into early next week. so we're seeing these waves of rain coming in pretty much every few days, and it's going to continue to increase that threat of flooding as we get anywhere from two and a half to three inches of rainfall along the coast and across much of the bay area during this time, that we are expecting that rainfall and then looking at temperatures, it's going to be cool near freezing tomorrow morning, but then the rest of the week in the 40s, with highs only making it into the mid to upper 50s. mike, you're seeing a lot of slowing now out of oakland. yeah. most dramatic slowing we see outside of the bay bridge toll plaza. of course we have slowing here past the coliseum up to just past high street and just shy of 29th. there's a disabled vehicle. oh, perhaps a crash in the backup. now, we'll check on that. but 580 westbound moving very smoothly. northbound 880 slow from the coliseum up into downtown. the rest of the east bay shows a smooth flow of

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at the top stories on today in the bay. police so far not commenting on what appears to be a police cruiser with at least one bullet hole. now, witnesses do tell us that the officer shut down that area and an empty car was also there at the scene. it's all unfolding. this is happening after a little after midnight in east oakland. this is where seminary runs into 580. so far, there are no reports of anyone being hit by the gunfire. students at santa clara's wilcox high school are promising to walk out of class today in response to the federal immigration crackdown. that walkout is planned for 1:00 this afternoon. in the meantime, several dozen protesters gathered yesterday in san jose's
