>> what do you mean? >> i have never seen you wear all that green. >> oh, this? i just -- the light was off in the closet. i didn't know what i was putting on. >> anyway, we got winter weather advisories, winter storm watches, lake effect snow warnings from kansas, all the way to the mid atlantic, into the northeast. we're going to be watching two storms starting to get th themselves together. first one today is going to bring the southern plains some heavier showers and thunderstorms, snow showers up to the north. this system tomorrow will impact the mid-atlantic. from washington to the south, philadelphia as well. heavy thunderstorms, localized flooding possible down into the southeast. then wednesday, a second low pressure system makes its way into the plains. st. louis, chicago, buffalo, detroit, you were involved with this one. it pushes off showers cleared by the evening hours with some leftover snow. so we are looking at this high impact system for dodge city,

kansas city, chicago, just west of detroit, green bay. 2 to 8 inches of snow. and then into the mid atlantic states, we're looking for about 2 to 6 inches south, localized flash flooding with up to 3 inches of rain, in the tennessee river valley, maybe even some places 5 inches and icing from albany down to mount airy, south bend and st. louis as well. so really rough conditions. and we're looking at toward the weekend severe weather down south. so a lot going on now. >> thank you, al. this morning president trump is announcing new steps in his shake-up of the federal government including more tariffs, and now the end of new pennies, and elon musk is putting another agency in his sights. let's start with garrett haake. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, these new tariffs teased by president trump on steel and aluminum will once again heavily impact american allies, specifically canada.

much of our steel and most of our aluminum imports comeme from our neighbor to the north, where there is more anger and frustration already brewing today. and the president is also proposing to change how we make change in this country, with a post overnight telling the treasury to stop making new pennies. president trump making late night news after watching the super bowl in person, the first sitting president to do so. ♪ perilous fight ♪ on his way back, trump saying he'll address new steel and aluminum tariffs today. >> we have a meeting tomorrow. >> reporter: after announcing them on air force one before the game. >> any steel coming in to the united states is going to have a 25% tariff. >> reporter: the u.s. imports more steel from canada than any other country. in an interview taped saturday, the president asked about his occasional claims the country should become a state. >> he had this. i think canada would be much better off being a 51st state. >> reporter: the president also teasing a mid-week announcement of reciprocal tariffs, taxing

imports from any country that taxes american exports. >> the ones that are taking advantage of the united states, we will have a reciprocity. >> reporter: those moves coming on top of a 10% tariff placed last week on all imports from china, all of which could drive up costs for american consumers. overnight, an announcement that may literally affect american's wallets. the president posting he's instructing the treasury to stop making new pennies, writing, let's rip the waste out of our great nation's budget, even if it's a penny at a time. as trump also used his trip to new orleans to expand on his foreign policy, doubling down on his controversial vision for the middle east. >> i'm committed to buying and owning guns. >> reporter: and confirming that he spoke by phone with the russian president vladimir putin at least about ending russia's war in ukraine. >> i expect to have many more conversations. we have to get that war ended. i would imagine i would be meeting with putin, yes, at the right time. >> reporter: and the president

who picked kansas city to win last night is expected this morning where we will see the tariff announcement at some point at the white house later today. in canada, officials are pointing out the metals to be taxed support key u.s. industries, including defense and making cars. and the premier of ontario is complaining of shifting goal posts and chaos with this administration. >> we'll see where it heads from there, garrett, thank you. and the push to overhaul the government, including a move to shut down an agency that's designed to protect consumers. nbc's chief capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles joins us with that part of the story. ryan, good morning to you. >> reporter: it seems like every day elon musk announces a review or rollback of a government program. now their opponents are trying to slow these moves by challenging them in court. but even that may not be enough to stop trump, leaving concerns the country may be on the verge of a constitutional crisis.

leaders this morning joined leaders from the crescent city and bay area for the official super bowl handoff. the event took place in new orleans. levi's stadium will, of course, be the site of next year's super bowl 60. it will air right here on nbc bay area, similar to the way it happened when the bay area hosted super bowl 50. san francisco and san jose will also play a leading role. the bay area host committee forecasts perhaps more than $600 million in economic output from next year's game. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco, where the countdown is on for nba all star weekend, which kicks off february 14th or on friday. it's some love and a lot of basketball, including the nba crossover at the moscone center. the all-star celebrity game, which is also happening on friday in oakland, as well as a rising stars challenge at the chase center. now, saturday has the skills challenge, three-point contest, and the dunk contest, while the big game

in our bodies head-to-toe. and of course we need it for building blocks for healthy muscles. the key is muscle protein synthesis. >> let's see move with that. the muscles, excuse me, i can't speak. it was a late night for the super bowl. can we just be honest? i was going to say, specifically, muscle mass is really important. >> yeah, particularly for women. we are learning so much more about the differences in protein requirements between men and women. for women, it is really about avoiding what's called the bermuda triangle of bad health. that's a combination of sarcopenia, a loss of muscle mass as we age, it happens to everyone, including men. frailty, and malnutrition. 45% of older americans, mostly women, have it. it can start as early as your 40s and 50s. very important when you talk about that. obviously, there is an increased

risk of falling, an increased risk of poor health outcomes. when you're talking about a woman with low strength. the good news, there's something we can do about it. increase protein intake and strength training. you have to lift weights. >> how much do you need? that's the question. >> this is where people get confused because there is different recommendations for men, for women. they're all over the place. take a screen shot of this if you are watching at home. it is simple math. take your current body weight in pounds, divide by 2.2 and then multiply by a range of 1.6 to 2. i typically go closer to 2, but, again, this is your approximate protein daily intake in grams. so this is going to be a big number. >> all right. is there a lot oprotein in pigs in the blanket? i had like 500 last night. >> how can you not? >> i always do think of meat with protein. but what are the sources? >> you can get this amount of protein. if you are talking about 100 grams a day for a woman, that takes some planning. you can get it from animal

growing debate over a fashion piece that you either love or hate. it's that simple. >> i mean, our kids love them, just love crocs. right? they're the go-to. but a growing number of schools, get this, now banning them. >> if my children are watching right now, their ears just perked up. nbc's business correspondent brian cheung joioins us wi a closer look. they're coming after the crocs. >> everyone has a lot of thoughts about this.

but some schools are saying crocs are a danger to students' safety, which has some administrators now, going croc hunting. they're the perforated foam footwear with the ferocious name, crocs. the company says 150 million pairs are sold every year. >> i will be living in these. >> but those crocs are at times also a trip. some schools now taking action banning them outright. that's the case at one alabama public high school where tony pritchett is taking it seriously. >> they're a safety hazard. they could twist their knees or ankles. they have to have tennis shoes on at all times. >> these will land you here for suspension. the schools had crocked folded into no open toe policy for years, as other schools have with flip-flops and slides. this is the first school year it's enforcing the policy.
