good morning. i'm frances rivera. we begin with the growing fears of an escalating trade war. china has officially responded to president trump's tariffs on chinese goods, enacting their tariffs, their own tariffs on u.s. imports, including coal, natural gas and agriculture equipment. now the president has signed sweeping 25% tariffs on all aluminum and steel imports. nbc's alice barr joins me now from d.c. good morning. what response are we seeing to these new tariffs? >> reporter: frances, good morning. some american steelworkers are praising the move, saying it will help the industry, but there are also concerns that this is going to drive up prices for consumers. this could impact a wide range of products from cars to canned food to home appliances. canada is the largest supplier of steel to the united states, followed by brazil and mexico. president trump imposed similar tariffs during his first term,

citing national security. this time he say it's to reduce. >> ultimately, it will be cheaper. >> reporter: meanwhile, the white house is facing setbacks as it attempts to shrink the government. a judge has extended the freeze on the buyout offers that went out to federal workers. another judge has blocked the administration from cutting research funding, after 22 states filed a lawsuit, the national institutes of health announced plans to dramatically slash funding to research agenes. and labor groups have filed a lawsuit seeking to stop elon musk's department of government efficiency from accessing sensitive data at the department of education and other agencies. nbc news has viewed correspondence that shows doge has been acting within the department of housing and urban

development. they will be conducting a comprehensive review of contracts and vendors and looking to see if there are any dei components to the contracts. in a new poll from cbs and ugov. 52% of americans say musk and his team should have at least some influence over government operations and spending. 31% say they should have none. and this poll puts president trump's approval rating at 53% after three weeks in office. 70% said president trump is following through with what he promised durinhis campaign. frances? >> okay. alice, thank you. for response from canadians, erin mclaughlin is in toronto getting reactions to the new tariffs. >> reporter: with president trump announcing new tariffs and renewing talk of making canada the 51st state, many canadians say they're steeling their resolve for a trade war.

get better, if you guys down south don't mess it up too much. >> reporter: nbc news, toronto. the justice department has ordered federal prosecutors in new york to drop charges against eric adams. they are to be dropped without prejudice, meaning they could be re-filed later. last night president trump issued a pardon for former illinois governor rod blagojevich. he was convicted of eruption-related crimes, including trying to sell the senate seat vacated by barack obama. blagojevich served eight years of his 14-year sentence before president trump commuted his sentence during his first term. hamas has called off saturday's hostage release saying israel has been violating the terms of the cease-fire.

in response, president trump said they should call off the cease-fire completely if hamas does not release all the hostages on saturday. >> if all the hostages aren't returned by saturday at 12:00, i think that's an appropriate time, i would say cancel it, and all bets are off. and let hell break out. >> for more on this, let's go to daniele hamamdjian. how has israel violated the cease-fire, according to hamas? >> reporter: good morning, frances. from the moment the cease-fire was announced we knew it was a fragile truce. hamas says israel delayed the return of thousands and thousands of displaced residents back to northern gaza, targeting them with gunfire and shelling in several areas across the strip. something our own nbc news team has witnessed. now, hamas has now responded to the president's threats saying he has to remember, quote, that the agreement must be respected

by both parties and that the language of threats has no value and only complicates matters. given the president's redevelopment idea and his threat to cut aid to egypt and jordan if they refuse to take in palestinians, you can imagine what the tension will be like later today when the president meets with the jordanian king. again, is this a trump pressure tactic? or will it turn into actual policy? we don't know. but what is clear is that the arab world has made it very clear that they will not support the forced displacement of palestinians. a lot can happen between now and saturday. but, for the time being, the israeli military hasnce again raised its highehest alert leve and soldiers have been told they are not pulling back of the gaza strip just yet. frances. >> it will be a critical next few days. danielle, thank you. authorities say one person is dead and four injured after a small plane hit a parked plane

near scottsdale airport yesterday. the learjet landing gear failed, causing it to veer off the runway and crash into a business jet parked on private property. the learjet is owned by motley crue's vince neil. in a statement, neil's lawyer says two pilots and two passengers were on the plane but neil was not. the ntsb is investigating. another round of winter weather is on the way this morning. let's turn to meteorologist denise isaac, who's tracking that troub for us. good morning, denise. seems like back-to-back storms here. >> yes, good morning, frances. i mean, we can't really get a breather. because we are tracking this next area of low pressure that's already bringing snow across the ohio river valley. heavy rain from nashville all the way into texas. this area of low pressure will continue to pull east. then bring in rain and snow to the mid atlantic. the mid atlantic will be the big winner here from delaware all the way into portions of maryland. while, to our south, we will continue to track heavy rain. then tomorrow, right on its heels, there's a new area of low

subdue the man, at times punching him, trying to get the passenger to release the hair of erica ramos sitting in front of him. >> i really wasn't sure what was happening in that moment. i was afraid that this person was going to start punching me. >> reporter: erica escaping the seat, and the flight attendant calling for backup. erica says the attack caused painful swelling, and she's still getting headaches nine days later. there was a moment where we actually see your face in that video turn around and look at him. what were you thinking? and did you say anything to him? >> i did not say anything to him. i think i was just really in shock. from my understanding of things, he was having a psychotic episode. and i didn't necessarily want to interrupt with him and possibly make things worse. >> reporter: the plane still on the ground was scheduled to fly to portland, oregon from oakland, california on february 1st. after the chaotic ordeal it was forced to return to its gate so

thorities to intervene. it's not every day that you see flight attendants throwing punches to try to subdue an unruly passenger. was that the right move there? >> the flight attendant who had to respond to this took the immediate actions that you would take if you were able to take the crew member self-defense training. we're in a confined space. we cannot call for help. there is no other way to do this. and there was imminent danger here. so the passenger needed to have action against them in order to stop what they were doing in severely harming another passenger. >> reporter: alaska airlines telling nbc news in part that the man appeared to be experiencing a medical episode. our crew responded to the situation quickly and kept all guests safe, adding that the man has been banned from future flights. the airline has found itself at the center of increased public scrutiny recently after multiple high-profile safety incidents.
