mike tirico will introduce us to the team usa hopefuls to watch. speaking of winter, we will begin with back-to-back storms from the midwest to the east coast over the next few days. the first getting underway overnight. here is a live look right now. you can see snow falling as we speak in lexington, kentucky. parts of the south bracing for several inches of snow. >> yeah, right behind that one, a second storm set to arrive tomorrow. in all, more than 70 million people are under winter alerts. dylan is in for al this morning. she has her eye on all of them. >> these are the warnings for storm number one. these are the warnings and watches for storm number two. let's talk about the first one. we have snow falling in lexington, kentucky, charleston, virginia. heavy rain in nashville and extending into eastern arkansas, too. this will spread through the mid atlantic. this is one of those storms, the farther south you go, the more snow you will get.

illinois. this will also be the icemaker that we will see across parts of the northeast. altuna could end up with ice again. this will be very slippery, especially for the appalachians. but for the east, it will ice overnight and it will transition to rain by thursday morning. peter? >> appreciate it very much. we turn to a flurry of new developments from the trump white house. the president demanding the release of all hostas in gaza and making threats if that does not happen. meantime, his push to reshape the federal government is facing new legal setbacks this morning. we have it all covered beginning with nbc's chief national correspondent, keir simmons. good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. good to see you in the chair. this cease-fire was always likely to be more fragile over time. now more doubts over the release of hostages including americans as president trump weighs in. this morning, president trump in a standoff with hamas, saying he was to cancel the cease-fire

7:12 am
they can't ignore them. what happens if they do? >> if it's an open question, how a judge might enforce a contempt order in that case. the judge in rhode island, basically giving them a warning saying, i meant what i said when i told you to release those federal funds. but the judge didn't mention what would happen if they don't. while the president and vice president are saying the authorities don't have the authority, doj lawyers are not in court saying we didn't do anything like that. they're saying they didn't look at the scope of the order. so there is a little bit of a space there between what's happening in practice and what's happening in action. >> another major headline overnight is the trump's justice department is demanding that federal prosecutors drop their case against new york city's mayor eric adams here. this is clearly a very unusual intervention in a high-profile public corruption case. how are they explaining this move? >> we should mention the mayor pled not guilty. it was on corruption charges,
