investigation underway, as we hear from firefighters. plus rain coming down across the bay area at this hour. here is a live look at downtown san jose and meteorologist kari hall monitoring the latest here with this atmospheric river and our mike inouye tracking the slick commute for you. also protecting immigrants. the town hall. bay area leaders are taking part in today as a federal crackdown continues across the nation. this is today in the bay. boy, is it a soggy thursday morning in the bay area. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. what first, as this most recent storm is moving across the bay area, our storm ranger is sitting atop san bruno mountain scanning the skies. this is the bay area's only mobile doppler radar, helping bring you the most accurate forecast. this storm comes following last week's storm, which caused damage in the north bay. much of that area is still saturated this morning. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall this morning. she's
5:02 am
monitoring the rain, and we've got a flood advisory. yes. so they issued the flood advisory out way ahead of the storm. and so that means that we're watching out for that possibility of street flooding, as well as rising creeks and streams. and then we can see this large storm system as it is moving directly into the bay area. this is the center of low pressure that's driving all of this rain with this atmospheric river into our area. and then once we get to this part of the storm that's directly over us, then it becomes more scattered, but also with more energy. there will be the possibility of thunderstorms. so we're going to have the more widespread and heavy rain continue for the next few hours. and we can see that there's a lot of yellows and reds here, mainly south of san francisco into the east bay. and for the north bay, there is a steady light to moderate rain that continues to come down. adding up on top of all the rain we've already had on storm ranger, we can see that some of the heavier rain once again is now shifting into the south bay, the east bay, as well as over

toward the central valley. before the bay area, it is pretty steady for the north bay. and then we're also seeing the impacts of all of that rain causing some flooding on the roadways, as well as the potential of some more landslides and flooding in the santa cruz mountains, where it is really pouring at this point. and so as we take a look at what to expect, we are going to see that possibility of more flash flooding in the santa cruz mountains, some street flooding elsewhere, and ponding. that means it may be a very dangerous commute. and so, mike, you're tracking that with a lot of accidents on the roads. and we have a 48 incidents reported by chp already this morning. i'm tracking with them, most of them standing water, larger puddles from flooding. look at all the blue puddling and ponding. the green shows where it's at least wet. at least i'm most concerned about this. this leaves only one lane of westbound 580 open at redwood road. there was an earlier crash involving a semi truck which may still be there. reports of several inches of water across all but the fast

lane, which is getting through right now, very slowly because folks are heading over toward the castro valley y off of the dublin grade. no word on when they can clear that. they think theyust have to clear a drain. but this has been going on for a while. again, in toward the castro valley, y wet roadways continue several spots on and off ramps through oakland, along 580 and 880 reported with standing water, large puddles there. definitely a wet commute as you head toward the bay bridge. here's the blurry look over at the berkeley curve. back to you. thank you very much, mike. well, breaking overnight in the east bay, first responders are on the scene of a deadly house fire. it happened in brentwood on nicholas court off of central boulevard today in the bay's bob redell. live for us there. and, bob, i know we're learning one person has died here. do we know what happened? sadly, you are correct. the fire is out. the coroner has come and gone. you're looking at what's left of this two story home here on nicholas court. as you mentioned in brentwood. and that garage right there. there's the fire department still out here, just spraying foam to make sure

and i thought, you know, not again. a fire investigator was also out here earlier trying to figure out what caused this fire that, again, killed one person. there are two cars in the garage that burned up in this fire. one looks like an old convertible that's on the right side. the second is a sedan that looks like it's from the 40s or 50s. don't know what role, if any, those vehicles might have had in the start of this fire. reporting live here in brentwood. bob redell today in the bay. very sad a life was lost there. thanks for the latest, bob. we are also following breaking news from overseas this morning. at least 28 people arare hurt in munich, germany. this is after a car slamd into a crowd of people in a suspected attack. police say that the driver, a 24 year old afghan, is, quote, secured and poses no further threat. some of those victims were seriously and critically injured. the incident comes a day before a major security conference in munich is set to

rain. there are new flood watches and landslide warnings in effect right now in the north bay. napa county sheriff issuing a flood watch for people living in the oak circle area. it said hopper creek could flow into oak circle. it's advised for people to move their cars and trucks to higher ground. evacuation warnings remain in effect for several neighborhoods in santa rosa as well. police are telling people to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. drivers are also being warned about flooded roads and we are seeing the rain come down. it's that atmospheric river we're in. kari. yeah, we've already gotten about two inches of rainfall, pretty widespread across the north bay, but it's been over 3.5in for the santa cruz mountains. so if you are told to evacuate, make sure you do so. and it's always good to have a plan ahead of time. if you do see water covering the road, turn around. don't drown. that's definitely the advice here, as we've seen a lot of flooded roads. and then protect your possessions and gather your paperwork ahead of time. make sure you're signed up for nixle

or the nbc bay area app so that you can get alerts. if we are seeing some more of those heightened warnings going into effect. but the rain is widespread, which will continue through the next several hours. still a steady rain for the north bay, although the heaviest rain and where we're seeing the ponding on the roadways and the flooding issues is now in the east bay, as well as the south bay, the south bay to the south county. as this heavy rain continues. and mike, this has had a huge impact on the morning commute. absolutely. where you just show the active radar. i'm looking at the shot from oakland w, lighter traffic. right now we have wet, slick roadways. visibility is an issue. as i was driving through the south bay, in fact, there was standing water, smaller puddles, but they were pulling my car to either side. so keep both hands on the wheels. lots of single car crashes reported. you see the blue puddling and ponding, but no major slowing throughout contra costa county and not yet around mare island, though we'll watch for that for westbound highway 37. the biggest impact right now are three out of your four lanes are flooded and

there's a semi truck. perhaps another crash in the backup approaching the area toward redwood road, where this lane restriction continues. the volume coming out of the altamont pass is steady, moving hopefully a little slower, slicker roadways all the way through the south bay and on the peninsula. back to you. thanks, mike. 510 right now. using ai to enforce age restrictions online. just ahead on today in the bay. the way google plans to use its new ai models to help estimate whether a user is over or under 18 years old. in other words, act your age plus confirmation this morning. we're not going to see lower interest rates any time soon. out to the futures this morning, we'll take a look at what wall street is up to. i don't think they've woken up yet.

5:21 am
afternoon. as we get a closer look at the north bay. there are still some pockets of heavy rain around fairfield, and that also extends down toward concord and parts of the east bay, back to san francisco and half moon bay down to san mateo. you can see the bright yellow there on storm ranger showing that heavy rain, and then some light to moderate rain for san jose, but it has really picked up for the south county from morgan hill to gilroy and moving farther south. as we head toward 8:00, we can see that there will be some breaks in the activity with all of this rain, and then maybe even some rainbows and sunshine for a little while as we still get the off and on showers continue into the afternoon as well as the evening, but for the evening commute, it won't be nearly as bad as what we're seeing for the morning commute, and there still will be a chance of showers in the forecast through early tomorrow. but if you have some friday evening plans, some weekend plans, all of the rain will be out of here. we've already gotten a couple of inches of rainfall pretty widespread, with an additional
5:22 am
inch and a half possible for the north bay to the inland east bay, but the highest rainfall totals will be over the santa cruz mountains with that elevated landslide threat. that's also where we have a flash flood warning for the lighter shade of green there, and then a pretty widespread flood watch that was issued well ahead of this s water covering the road, do not drive over it because you just don't know how deep it is. and looking at the rest of the forecast, we will have that slight chance of rain early tomorrow. the weekend? not bad at all though it won't be clear and sunny. it will be milder and temperatures continue to warm up next week. mike, you're seeing lots of slippery roadways. yeah, the chp has lots of reports of a single car. spinouts or single cars going facing the wrong direction after hitting an object center divide or maybe some debris in the road. we're looking at light traffic at the richmond bridge heading over towards san rafael. but when those lights come to us, look at how slick the roadway is and watchhe water splash up behind these cars. there's water on the lens all over these contra costa

5:32 am
for now. but notice how in the north bay it is already starting to ease up along the coastline for ukiah, while the heavy rain is still coming down for san francisco to the east bay. we're tracking it all with storm ranger. that's our mobile doppler radar. you can see the red scan there and still showing some rain off the coast as it continues to be pulled into the bay area. it's pouring that heavy rain. we've already measured at least two inches of rainfall for much of the bay area, and there's more coming down. and so that's going to raise the risk that we could see some flash flooding in the santa cruz mountains, as well as some street flooding. and that threat starts to ease up a little bit as we get some breaks in the rain later on today. but once again, that thunderstorm risk will increase. so i'll be tracking all of that for you as we go into the next few hours. thank you. kari certainly has been a long night in some locations, as other parts of the bay area get a dose of this heavy rain the north bay keeps experiencing today in the bay's kris sanchez is live for us now
5:33 am
in san jose in the south bay. now, kris, no matter where you drive, it seems like it's really going to be a challenge this morning. yeah, you know, the roads are already sloppy, but you heard kari say that the south bay is going to get even more rain throughout the morning commute, so you definitely are going to want to give yoursel extra time as you hit the road this morning. i want to show you some of the problem spots already happening in the east bay. this is 580. this was taken just about an hour and a half ago. you can see there's flooding along westbound 580 near beaumont avenue, ardlie avenue, and on the approach to the eastbound i-80 freeway. you can see drivers trying to make it through those flood waters. and that's exactly what the chp says you're not supposed to do. you can lose control of your car in just two inches of water. and of course, water can cause your vehicle to stall. and that puts you in a pretty dangerous situation. now, the chp has been out all night as the roadways have been pooling and the wind
5:34 am
blowing the rain sideways at times, making it really hard to see. so the advice this morning work from home if you can, or delay your start if you can't. the chp says be very careful if you're going to be out on the roads, slow down. take your time, don't be in a rush and just expect that there's going to be traffic there, most likely going to be crashes out on the road. now, the city of san jose's departments of transportation and also the public works department work to minimize the impact. but still, they expect flooding along the guadalupe river and creeks, including coyote, los gatos and upper penitencia. now you can see what you can do if or if you see any sort of blockage in the gutters or storm drains in your neighborhood. you definitely can clear that away with a rake or something and help your neighbors out. now, if you happen to have the d day off, today is the day to make a stew or soup and not go out exploring because some of our state parks are closed. the santa cruz wharf is also closed this morning, and
5:35 am
it's not like you would want to be anywhere near highway 17 with the flash flooding warning. and mike, i think that you can corroborate that the roadways are difficult this morning. absolutely. chris, you started off with video of 580 up farther north in oakland, but i'm focusing right here on 580 because we have only one lane open. you saw chris's video with all that water making that rooster tail behind the cars. if they're fortunate enough to make it through, you can get by in one lane, four lanes of traffic, squeezing down to just one lane. around redwood road, there was a crash or at least a disabled semi truck in the area as well, and there may be a crash in the backup, although there's not a lot of detail the backup is starting to build. look at the green here in castro valley. the castro valley y is okay, but the green on the map shows where there will be wet roadways. we have slowing for 242 between highway four and 680 that developed early and is sticking around as well. hopefully they're slowing for the conditions slowing for highway 37. typical pattern over here and in richmond there may be another crash. we've seen a lot
