right now at 6:00. heavy rain soaking the bay area overnight. it's causing flooding and slick roads. we're monitoring the trouble spots as this heavy storm makes its way through the bay area. plus, breaking news overnight. a deadly house fire in the east bay. the investigation underway as neighbors reveal details about the victim this morning. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning. thanks for making us a part of your morning.. i'm mars washington, and i'm laura garcia. want to show you new video that's just into our newsroom from the east bay. westbound 580, in oakland. as cars were driving through that flooded roadway. this is why you have to slow down. this was taken about 4:00 this morning. now, in the north bay, there are
6:00 am
6:01 am
new flood watches and landslide warnings in effect right now. napa county sheriff issuing a flood watch for people living in the oak circle area. now, evacuation orders remain in effect for several addresses in a santa rosa neighborhood. people are telling everyone in that area to be ready to evacuate in a moment's notice and a warning. drivers need to be aware that there are flooded roads there. yeah, there are a lot of pockets of flooding everywhere. let's get to meteorologist kari hall this morning. she's been monitoring this microclimate weather alert. and we know that in the north bay, they've already gotten all of their yearly rainfall before we had this storm. and so any additional rainfall would cause the water levels and the flooding, the possibility to come up fairly quickly for other areas. we haven't had as much rain. but even as this moves through, it's just coming through too fast and too hard. it's causing a lot of flooding and the standing water on the roadways that we are seeing. the good thing is that with storm ranger, we're able to track exactly where the heavy rain is, and we are seeing it tapering
6:02 am
off for parts of the north bay, and that will be the trend over the next few hours with a steady to light rain. but we are still seeing it pouring pretty heavily around fairfield. expect that activity to start to lighten up as well, and we have some heavy rain right around oakland and the berkeley hills, and moving over towards 680 from san ramon to dublin right now and continuing through the tri-valley, as well as extending across much of contra costa county in the south bay, we're seeing some bright reds for morgan hill on southward, where that rain as it comes over the santa cruz mountains has been causing a lot of issues. so make sure that if you are told to evacuate, you do so and do not drive over water flooded roads and make sure you gather your paperwork if you are also told to evacuate. so if you have the nbc bay area app, you can get those alerts. you can download it by scanning the qr code on your screen. and it is a great way to track this storm and also get those alerts as we are seeing more flood watches and warnings going up. and mike,
6:03 am
you're seeing the bay bridge looks unexpectedly light right now. you know, we had more traffic kind of eased off and now it's filling in once again. i thought there was a major incident on the east shore freeway there slowing and no major incidents reported. but we do see more slowing gradually spread out across the upper east shore freeway. same thing for highway 24. look at that. and southbound 680. so this gradual slowing to me means folks are slowing because of those conditions, those wet conditions you saw out there. wise move drivers give yourself a little extra time, even though traffic does seem to be moving smoothly. we had some earlier flooding that took out most most, most of 580. we showed the video earlier. this was even worse over here near redwood road, but it has recovered and cleared nicely. the tri-valley is just starting to build. same thing for the south bay north 101. back to you. all right mike, thanks. we are following some breaking news from overseas where at least 28 people are hurt in munich, germany. this is after a car slams into a crowd of people in a suspected attack. police are saying the driver, a 24 year old afghan, is, quote,

secured and possesses no further threat. some of those victitims were seriously and critically injured. that incident comes a day before a major security conference in munich is set to begin. vice president jd vance and secretary of state marco rubio are among the many world leaders expected to attend. more breaking news we're following. but this time, closer to home in the east bay, first responders are on the scene of a deadldly use fire. it happened in brentwood on nicholas court off of central boulevard. and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell. he is live there now, and sadly, one person died in this. you are correct, sadly. good morning to you, laura. the fire is out. the coroner is come and gone. so is the fire department. a contractor has been out here boarding up this house. you can see some of the items that are left on the front lawn right there. there's a charred remains of what looks like a motorized scooter that somebody was handicapped might use to get around. and then behind that, there's the remains of this two story house. this is on nicholas court here in brentwood, where one person died

and i thoht, you know, not again. a fire investigator was also out here earlier trying to figure out what caused the fire. that again killed one person. there are two cars in that garage that burned up in the fire. one looks like an old convertible. the second a sedan that looks like it's from the 1940s or 50s. don't know what role, if any, they might have had in the start of this fire. reporting live here in brentwood. bob redell. today in the bay. so sad the life was lost. thanks for the details on that, bob. well, we also have some new details to tell you about. this is in that cyber truck crash that killed three piedmont college students that were home for thanksgiving break. the coroner is releasing its toxicology report on the victims who died. all showed traces of cocaine, alcohol and marijuana in their systems. two of the victims died from inhaling toxic fumes and smoke. also, the driver had just under

a 0.2% blood alcohol level. a fourth person in the car survived. the truck slammed into a tree and retaining wall and then burst into flames. investigators are still sorting out the exact cause of the crash. well, happening today, new protests are planned in oakland and san francisco in response to federal immigration crackdown. this is the latest in a string of recent protests, including one just last week by students at san jose's gunderson high school. today, students at oakland high school are walking out of school at 10:00 this morning with plans to picket outside the school, then march over to lake merritt. san francisco state students will alsoold a rally in march. that one starts at 2 p.m. in malcolm x plaza. well, at the same time, bay area leaders will be taking part in a virtual town hall highlighting immigration rights. the latino community foundation hosting today's event is going to take place at 10 a.m. it will feature a question and answer session with experts from up and

it all for us, and we've had quite a bit early this morning. up to now, we've had for much of the bay area, anywhere from one and a half to two inches of rainfall, but we've already gotten over four inches of rainfall in the santa cruz mountains. we are seeing it lightning up as we track it with storm ranger. for much of sonoma county and northern marin county, we're seeing the edge of the clearing starting to make its way into the north bay. so that's going to be the trend for the heavier rainfall, the more widespread rain to start to ease up to some more scattered activity by late morning into the afternoon. but there still will be a chance at any point as we go throughout the day, and possibly even some thunderstorms as we get some more of that energy moving in. with that area of low pressure making its way across the bay area, and rain chances continue into early tomorrow, but then taper off for tomorrow afternoon with a much clearer and drier weekend ahead. mike, now you have a look at san jose. yeah, so not clear or dry right now on the roadways in san

jose we see north 101. that water kind of picking up and kicking back after the cars passed by us. it's enough to show you what it would be like hitting your windshield. and that might be why we saw a little more slowing for a short period of time here. but we're back to the clearer drive. and then in about a half hour, we should see more slowing for that section of 101 minor crashes reported around. but what we're looking at this section right here, 880 just south of mission, as well as 680 just north of calaveras. reports of flooding and a spinout or a single car crash involved there in spots. we're watching a couple of lanes right here, north 680 past calaveras. word that you're to slow lanes are blocked right now by standing water. southbound 880 kind of holding steady with mild slowing in through hayward clearing. by the time we get to fremont, a lot of on and off ramps through oakland through the morning have reported big puddles standing water use caution. back to you. good advice. thanks, mike. 610 for you right now. another blow to a struggling bay area mall next here on today in the bay, we're going to give you the lates business announcing it's leaving san francisco center mall. and we've got word that the

and there are some places in the bay area making the list, cracking the top ten at number eight. the good salad. this is in santa clara. the restaurant focuses on chef crafted salads with quality ingredients made in-house. it was founded by a former tech engineer. in addition to santa clara, it also has locations in los altos, campbell, and palo alto. but you know what? the salad hotspot isn't the only place on the bay area making that list. restaurants in roseville, redwood city, pleasanton, san mateo, san francisco, and half moon bay also on that list. and maybe you want to get a crack at one of those restaurants over the next few days, because valentine's day just around the corner and one of those restaurants really might be the perfect spot for that romantic night. or maybe it's perfect for galentine's day. that's galentine's day. oh, it's only the best day of the year. every february 13th, my lady friends and i leave our husbands and her boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it breakfast style. i love it. happy

6:20 am
all the heavy rain being drawn in by this atmospheric river. and you c see the center of the low pressure here. once that arrives, we see some breaks in the rain. but that's also where all of the energy is. and that could potentially mean thunderstorms as it moves right over the bay area. so a lot of concerns here. we are not done with the more higher impacts of this storm system as it continues to move through. as we see the heavy rain that's now shifted over toward the east bay, the south bay, and it's tapering off for the north bay, as we can see with stormranger, a little bit of a closer look shows that at least around santa rosa, much of sonoma county, as well as northern marin county, we are seeing some breaks in the rain. and boy, do you need it. after all of the heavy downpours we've seen overnight, it's still coming down steadily around solano county, around fairfield. but then as we get into the south bay, that rain is still dumping down and the santa cruz mountains has had the highest rainfall totals we've seen across the bay area over four
6:21 am
inches, and all of that causing flash flooding concerns, which also extends into the south bay. now, with the flood warning, watch out for that water just ponding on the streets and that flooding mainly in those low lying areas. and if you do see water covering the road, do not drive into it. just turn around. and also probably saving not only you, but the cars behind you that have to deal with that rooster tail. we're going to see those high winds and the possibility of more downed trees, and the creeks and streams may rise through late morning into the afternoon, with scattered rain continuing into this afternoon into early tomorrow. our hour by hour outlook does show that we are going to see not just the widespread rain, but it tapers off to some scattered rain into later today. and that's what we mean by that hit or miss activity. really, at any point today it could rain, but there will be some breaks, maybe even some sunshine and some rainbows as well going into early tomorrow morning. and then look
6:22 am
at tomorrow afternoon into saturday. all of this clears out, but during the short period of time, we could get another inch to inch and a half of rainfall in the south bay as well as the east bay. so the flooding threat does remain as we go into the afternoon into early tomorrow, the rain starts to ease up and then it all clears out for the weekend, which is great timing because we have so much going on in the bay area and it's a long weekend, so hopefully you'll have a chance to enjoy it. mik you've been closely watching the nimitz. yeah, we actually right in the foreground on this overcrossing had a crew sitting there. i don't know if they were poised to go and help right here, but north 880 is what we're focusing on. that crew has cleared the overpass, but we have not cleared the slow lane. north 880, just past high street. so just out of our view, you see the flashing lights at the top and more heading there. you're slow. lane is blocked. there may be more slowing if they have to block an additional lane to clear that. that's just one short section of the nimitz freeway. 580 westbound is clear but wet wet throughout oakland and the rest of the bay. watch

6:32 am
some scattered rain later today. but this has caused a lot of flooding issues. the good thing is that with storm ranger, we are seeing it easing up in parts of the north bay while it is still dumping down south of the golden gate bridge, and we can see the pockets of heavy rain now moving through oakland and berkeley, as well as san francisco down the peninsula to san mateo. and we can also see it picking up around fremont. and that's going to also be the case for the south county. from morgan hill to gilroy, we can see the heavy rain that's still dumping down as we go toward late morning. we start to see some breaks in the rain, but really, at any point we could see some of those showers coming through. and there will be then is when we could see the thunderstorms popping up into tonight, as well as early tomorrow. marcus and laura, thank you very much, kari. as shshe mentied, it's really been a long night. i mean, you can see howow these rains have just been coming down already in the north bay. they've had so much water. it's been saturated up there. yeah. and also in the

south bay, we're seeing the issue as well today in the bay's kris sanchez is in san jose this morning. kris i dealt with it coming in myself. i've seen in your reports, no matter where you're driving this morning, you're going to face some challenges out there, right? and marcus, what you drove through isn't even the worst of it. you've been hearing kari say that here in the south bay, we are going to get the brunt of it through the later part of the morning commute, and we are already seeing flooding. i want to take you to gilroy. this video taken just in the last couple of minutes, you can see there's flooding in a parking lot there. and that's just one area, folks trying to do what they can, trying to clear out those storm drains to give that water some place to go. but again, we are expecting more rain in the south bay than we've gotten in the last couple rounds of storms. i want to take you also to oakland this morning, and this was taken just about 4:00 this morning. probably what you dealt with marcus this morning. this is westbound 580 near beaumont avenue, ardley avenue, the approach to eastbound i-80 all getting a lot

of flooding there. you see drivers trying to make it through those flood waters. and that's exactly what the chp says you should not do. you can lose control of your vehicle and just two inches of water. and of course, if it's deeper than that, that water can get in your tailpipe and your vehicle can stall. the chp has been out all night as the rains have been pulling along freeways and the wind blowing that rain sideways, which you maybe saw at the beginning of this live report, kind of making it very difficult to see because it is blowing in the other direction. now, if you can work from home or you can delay the start of your day, you should do that. if you cannot, then you need to leave early and you need to be careful. if you're going to be out on the roads, slow down, take your time, don't be in a rush and just expect that there's going to be traffic there. there's most likely going to be crashes out on the road. now, you saw that person trying to clear a storm drain in gilroy just a few moments ago. this is the city of

san jose and their workers from their transportation department and their public works department. they've been trying to minimize the impact ahead of the storm. but still, we expect to see some flooding along the guadalupe river and creeks, including coyote, los gatos and the upper penitencia creek. if you see flooding in your neighborhood, you can try to clear that storm drain if it's safe to do so. if you have the day off and you thought maybe you would go out exploring, you should know that a number of the state parks are closed in the south bay, and we expect flash flooding on highway 17, so you wouldn't even be able to get to the santa cruz wharf, which is closed today anyway. mike inouye has been tracking all of the hazards spots. and mike, i've seen your maps and there is a lot of ponding on the roadway. absolutely. a lot of blue was earlier today, and we're going to see some more in the south bay. kris you're talking about the more system, more systems coming through the area. we already have been seeing this water kicking up. this is north 101 north of the two 8680 interchange, the volume building. once again, as we

rest of the weekend is looking so much better with some breaks in the rain and snow, and we're going to see temperatures headed for the low 40s. we also have the all star weekend for the bay area in san francisco. it's going to be in the upper 50s. partly cloudy, kind of a chilly weekend, but at least we won't have to deal with any widespread rain. and it looks good after today. mike, you've been tracking several crashes. that's right. some smaller, some single vehicle involved. likely. probably spin outs. so watch those speeds. but over here in oakland, more flashing lights heading north toward high street just outside of our view, with some flashing lights at the top of the banner there. we have the slow lane that was blocked and now some debris reported in the area. it's not reportedly due to this crash, but there's more junk in the roadway, perhaps from trees alongside the freeway. look how jammed it is for north 880 past the coliseum. that's the really tough stretch here. 580. looking great. but again, we've had a lot of flooding reported on on and off ramps throughout oakland. piedmont hills, we're looking at 24 and 680 coming down out of

pouring very heavily during the overnight hours. let's get a look at this storm system that is slinging all of this moisture, this heavy rain int the bay area. not only here, but all across the state. some much needed rain for southern california as well. it's all been driven by this area of low pressure that we can see that's bringing in that rain from that atmospheric river. but we're starting to see some clearing once we get closer to the center of this low level storm, this low level, low pressure system that's going to create more scattered activity, but also more energy and the possibility of thunderstorms. so we'll be watching out for that as we go into the rest of today. as we are seeing some of the heavier rain now tapering off for the north bay. it's still been coming down for areas in the east bay as well as the south bay as well as the peninsula, but a closer look at the north bay. we're seeing some lighter rain for santa rosa. still raining pretty hard around fairfield, but it's about to ease up here soon. and then for the east bay, it's really
