fast overnight to clear a rockslide on highway 101, in the north bay. we're tracking your alternate routes this morning as the wet weather slowly trickles away. plus, it is almost time for tip off nba all star weekend officially underway. security
6:01 am
measures in place to keep everyone safe. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you on this friday. thanks for starting your friday with us. i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. we do start with that breaking news. the wet weather. we know it hit parts of the bay area very hard, but now it's causing some traffic trouble in the north bay. a rockslide and downed tree blocking two right lanes of highway 101 today in the bay's bob redell live for us there at the scene. and bob, a cleanup is has it started at all? oh, yeah. it's been going on for several hours. almost 12 hours now. ten hours, i should say. we are on southbound 101, just south of the rodeo avenue exit here in sausalito. those headlights are heading southbound into san francisco. and there's the issue right there. i know it's hard to see because we got the lights from the caltrans truck, but there is a mudslide that is right there. and you should be able to maybe see it in the back
6:02 am
lighting there. this is a mudslide of that has come down on the far right lane of southbound 101 here and within the past 30 minutes, fortunately, caltrans has been able to open up a second lane of traffic, so the two left lanes are open. traffic is at the limit, as you can see there, and then the two right lanes are closed. and this is why caltrans responded to this around seven last night to remove a tree which is cut up in front of us, and then also to use the front loaders to remove scoop up the rest of the rock, mud and debris that came down the steep hillside during yesterday's large rainstorm. i did speak with a caltrans worker who said that the mud did continue to come down for the first hour of the cleanup last night. so again, this is around seven, 8:00 last night. but he believes it is now settled. so again, i know it's hard to see because we got the backlighting here from this truck, but there is a large swath of mud. maybe you can see it now with the front loaders
6:03 am
lights there. there's still a large chunk of that mud and debris and rock that is onto the road here on the right lane. again, chp is estimating that maybe they'll be able to get this reopened by 8:00 this morning. just a lot of mud there. and they've got some logs up here that have been cut up in the front. so a lot of work to be done, but fortunately not having an impact on the commute right now because traffic is at the limit. so again, southbound 101 here in sausalito just past rodeo avenue. two right lanes shut down, two left lanes open. reporting live here along southbound 101 in sausalito, bob redell today in the bay. thanks for being out there. i know that it can be tough. the conditions are calming down now. bob did show you. and without bob and jessie up there, we wouldn't know that that second lane had reopened in the last few minutes. so now, you know half capacity and light traffic because it is friday. this is kind of saving the commute. heading down toward the golden gateridge through marin county. again, that will be there for at
6:04 am
least the next hour, possibly until 8:00. that's when they hope to have all lanes reopened. highway 37 shows a little slowing, and that's pretty typical even on a friday. earlier crash cleared at the bay bridge. there is a little slowing there as you're getting there, but the rest of contra costa county, just the green highlighting, shows you where there may be some damp roadways. much calmer conditions over here. northbound 238 though approaching 880. there's a crash affecting the connector. so it's open access onto 880 is open, but chp says it's restricted enough that they're going to let big rigs use westbound 580 until this is cleared, and they need to get caltrans to clear some of that fencing that's tied up with that big rig that's there on northbound. 238. again, the green highlighting shows where things are still damp, perhaps slick roadways kari much calmer than yesterday, but still, that may be an issue for some drivers. yeah, we do still have some lingering showers on some parts of the bay area roadways, so we're waking up this morning to a last wave rain passing by as we track it with storm ranger. at least it is clearing in the north bay, as well as in
6:05 am
san francisco and parts of the peninsula. but we are seeing that rain moving through fremont and sunol and down towards milpitas, as well as down to san jose and morgan hill as you're heading out, and it is a sloppy commute through the south bay. as we take a look at this live camera at 101 in san jose. we will see the rain wrapping up here soon. the rest of the day partly cloudy and temperatures headed for the mid 50s. we'll talk about the weekend ahead and what you can expect as you make plans coming up in a few minutes. all right kerry, thank you. and all of that rain is the cause of a rescue. two people are safe after becoming trapped on an island in san jose. so this happened in the middle of a guadalupe river near autumn and coleman avenue yesterday. firefighters managed to pull the pair to safety, along with two dogs and four puppies. san jose mayor matt mahan posting on social media his gratitude for those first responders for the rescue. now, be sure to stay with us as we continue to follow the latest with this storm the impact it's having. just download our free app. our team of meteorologists of course

tracking it all for you, but you can also track it as well. former san jose city councilman omar torres, who is charged with sexual abuse, is due back in court for a plea hearing later today. police arrested torres last november in the wake of sex crime accusations. he's now facing three excuse me, three child molestation charges. the hearing this morning is scheduled for 9 a.m. torres resigned in november. a special election to replace him is set for april 8th. also happening today, east bay advocates will protest what they say is a lack of safety at an intersection near a middle school. the group bike east bay will be demanding improvements to harrison street and hamilton place in oakland. the intersection is right next to westlake middle school. advocates say the crosswalk is dangerous and is right in front of the school. the protest will start at 8:00 this morning. well, turning now to nba all star festivities tipping off today. and we want to go live

needed has now moved out for all these weekend festivities. yeah, for this afternoon it looks so much better, even though we do still have to deal with a little bit of rain as you're out and about early this morning. for us early risers, it is still a bit soggy. and we're getting that rain coming down in the south bay. but let's talk about all of the festivies going on this weekend and what you can expect temperature wise. it will be in the mid 50s. breezy and cool with a mix of sun and clouds, and we'll see the sun peeking out every now and then for tomorrow. and a high of 59 degrees. so jackets on for the skills challenge. and that starts at 5:00. and then for the all star game on sunday it will be in the upper 50s. so we're all going to see some mid to upper 50s across the bay area this weekend. and we're slightly warmer for tomorrow afternoon with some of the warmest temperatures in the south bay and mike heading out and filling up. where can we save a few pennies? we're trying to save anywhere, but all these prices i'm seeing are coming up a bit. so now the best price in oakland where we can find it under four bucks, just barely 3.99 at exxon
6:09 am
on foothill boulevard for the top number here. same number, same deal. south bay, the one place under $4 is in sunnyvale, 3.99 at national petroleum on old san francisco road for the middle number and nothing under four bucks. in san francisco, the low is 413. that's arco on mission street. so watch for that price. that's the best deal we can find. you can find your best deal gasbuddy.com on the roadways. you'll see the friday standard deal, lighter traffic flow, the green highlighting still some slick roadways around the bay areas. talked about scattered showers. talking about two alerts. the first is northbound 238 restrictions to the connector to northbound 880. so westbound 580 is allowed to have a semi trucks. you may see a different flow of traffic, but a lighter flow because it is friday. as we're looking toward the north bay, highway 37 has your typical slowing the mudslide on 101 over right where it says sausalito, because that's right where it is, and the bay bridge toll plaza. we do have some slowing there. again, those conditions in the south bay are getting slick as the volume starting to build. back

yeah, they have to use caution because of the equipment that's out there. marcus. yes. safety for the workers as well as for the drivers. let's look over here. we're talking about southbound 101. speeds are starting to dip a tad bit. half the freeway is open. two lanes are closed, two lanes are open. bob redell is up there as well. and he notified us as soon as we had those lanes open there. we are looking at slower traffic just starting to build up because of the light lighter build. if they clear this by 8 a.m. we should be okay. so far nothing north of there. coming down toward the golden gate bridge. the bay bridge heading across the water from east bay is moving smoothly, and there's no major backup, but it is starting to slowly form over there out of oakland and highway 37 in the north bay. so the north bay does have that one alert in sausalito, and the east bay has one alert as well. northbound 238 is restricted at the connector to northbound 880. so big rigs are allowed on 580. prepare for that. we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic outside of there, the green highlighting the kari. that still means some damp roads on our road weather index. and so even though there's not the rain that we had yesterday, there's still not out of the woods.
