develops. we're starting to see less of that rain. but that doesn't mean it's over because there is a lot of runoff that's happening in the hills and the mountains. we still have to worry ant that system. now, we're also looking at 35 million people under winter weather advisories, watches and lake effect storm warnings as you see because this system is going to be making its way to the east. tomorrow snow, heavy snow and ice from the midwest right on in to new england from boston, buffalo into chicago. severe storms with the risk of flooding and tornadoes. and then sunday a wintery mix along the eastern sea board. snow back from chicago, buffalo, michigan, all lake effect snow starting to fire up. but those soaking rains will continue. here is what we're looking at. heavier snow. isolated amounts up into new england. 18 inches of snow generally anywhere from 3 to 6 inches from chicago up into buffalo. plus, we have icing conditions upwards of a quarter of an inch of ice, up state new york.

we will be watching that. that will make for really hazardous travel and airport dela. then we have a moderate risk of severe weather. a widespread flood threat from nashville, memphis. but, still, the risk for flooding down into jackson, some areas picking up to six inches from memphis right on into charleston. so, guys, this rain, the ice and the snow all going to cause problems for the next 72 hours. >> all right. thanks, buddy. >> what a winter. al, thank you. now to that breaking news out of the vatican overnight. 88-year-old pope francis taken to the hospital. he's battling bronchitis. >> savannah, good morning to you. that's right. the vatican has just put out a statement that after a morning of work, pope francis was admitted to the hospital for necessary diagnostic tests and to continue his treatment for

bronchitis, which is still ongoing. the pope has been asking his aids to read, citing breathing issues. saying i hope next time i can. now, next thursday we learned from the vatican he had been diagnosed with bronchitis, an illns the 88-year-old has had several times in the last few years. in addition to pneumonia, he's battled a number of health challenges over the years, including having his lung removed and multiple surgeries for an abdominal surgery for his colon. he's suffering from knee and back pain, which is why we sometimes see him in a wheelchair at public events. sometimes he uses a walker and a cane. back in december he fell and injured his chin. in january he fell suffering a, quote, contusion to his right arm. >> and another note overseas while i've got you.

president vance kicked off his first overseas trip in ukraine. we will start with peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. america's allies are appearing to distance itself from long-standing commitments to its security partners in that region and appearing to rule out nato membership for ukraine. it comes as president trump is offering kind words of confidence for putin, while at the same time announcing plans to impose tariffs on some of america's closest partners. this morning ukrainian claims of a dramatic attack at chernobyl as president trump enters negotiations over the russia/ukraine war. saying a russian drone hit the nuclear power plant, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster. authorities at this point saying there does not seem to be a breach of the radioactive container. russia says it would not carry out strikes on nuclear

vance, who is set to meet with world leaders in munich, expressed strong support for ukraine saying that if russia doesn't negotiate in good faith, sending u.s. troops to ukraine is on the table, along with economic sanctions. it comes as the president is targeting some of the america's top trading partners, with a sweeping reciprocal tariff plan that would tax foreign goods at the same level other nations tax u.s. products. >> they charge us a tax or tariff, and we charge them. >> reporter: now dismissing worries about the impact of new tariffs. >> their jobs are going to go up, and prices could go up somewhat short-term, but prices will also go down. >> reporter: a bit more now on russia and ukraine. there have been competing messages from the trump administration. while vice president vance today said u.s. troops to ukraine remains on the table, pete hegseth said he does not believe u.s. troops will be on the ground in ukraine, and also this morning a top republican senator, the chair of the armed services committee criticized hegseth for saying this week

aside. basically a mutiny happening at doj all over that order to drop the charges for corruption. we knew that the charges hadn't been formally dropped yet, but we wondered why had that happened. and then we now have a peek behind the curtain thanks to a dramatic set of letters exchanged between federal prosecutors here in new york. prosecutors in new york essentially alleging they sat down with the lawyer for adams and top brass at doj, and the lawyer for adams said, hey, if you just drop these charges, adams will do what trump wants on immigration. that is a stunning allegation. mr. adams lawyers contests that and says it never happen. but the person that's making that allegation is not a die hard liberal. he is an arch conservative, a former clerk for justice alito. for people at home to wonder, why does this matter? it now leaves the specter that is he doing that on behalf of the people that elected him? that's the harm, arguable harm for people at home. this still isn't done. they haven't dropped the charges. so they have to find somebody at doj to do it and a federal judge has to sign off on it.

now to the showdown over the elon musk led effort to shrink the cost and size of the federal government. the first wave of firings and layoffs get underway. ryan nobles joins us now with that part of the story. ryan, good morning. >> craig, good morning. donald trump and elon musk continue the overhaul of the federal government and their unconventional moves are now facing civil court challenges threatening to slow their progress, leaving the president frustrated but unwilling to back down. overnight, massive cuts at another critical agency. the department of veteran affairs announcing the dismissal of more than 1,000 employees, a move that will save the va $90 million annually. it comes as the trump

administration instructed to fire all probationary employees. workers who have been on the job for less than a year. the new battlefield for president trump and elon musk's effort to reshape the government is fast becoming a federal courtroom. >> i always abide by the courts, and then i will have to appeal it. >> in the wake of the aggressive push to cut funding and eliminate departments, a flurry of lawsuits have been filed nationwide. and one by one, judges are putting temporary holds on the administration's plans. late thursday a federal judge ruled the trump administration could not suspend or cancel foreign assistance that was in place before he took office. it comes on the same day another judge exnded the restraining order preventing usaid employees from being put on leave. 14 states also filed suits challenging the appointment and authority of elon musk, calling

it unconstitutional. musk attacking the courts overnight, writing if any judge anywhere can stop every presidential action everywhere, we do not live in a democracy. meanwhile, as musk has always threatened to, quote, delete entire agencies, trump's choice to run the department of education, linda mcmahon, on capitol hill did not rule out that agency being completely eliminated. >> i will work with congress to reorient the department toward helping educators, not controlling them. >> meanwle, elon musk also taking a meeting yesterday with modi who was in washington for meetings with the trump administration. it was not clear if musk was meeting with the prime minister in his capacity as a government official or private citizen. the billionaire has business interests in the country, raising more countries about the conflicts of interest that exist

north bay. a rockslide and downed tree is blocking two right lanes of highway 101 today in the bay's bob redell is live this morning. so what's the update on the cleanup? well, good morning to you, laura. as you can see behind me, caltrans, they've got a front loader out here and there's that rockslide combination of tree and mud on the left side of your screen here. southbound 101 just past rodeo avenue. exit chp was initially saying they might have this reopened the two right lanes by 8:00, but by looking at the amount of dirt that is still there, i find it to be highly unlikely. fortunately, it is friday. it's friday light. if you look to the right. those are your vehicles heading southbound into san francisco across the golden gate bridge. they are slowing up right here, but it does not seem to be having a tremendous impact on the morning commute. so again, if you're heading southbound 101 in the south, just past rodeo, the two left lanes are open, two right lanes are shut down because of this mudslide from yesterday's storm. reporting live here in sausalito. bob redell, nbc, bay

week, and he's the first country act to do sphere. what is the challenge for you guys being the first pop act at sphere? >> the challenge is it's the most state-of-the-art venue on the planet, and we're excited about it because when we did the millennium tour, the concept for the artwork and the tour was the future. but we're 25 years into the future now, and a lot has changed. so we're excited to take that album, that concept of the future to the next level in the most state-of-the-art venue on the planet. 160-some thousand speakers in the venue. a 300-foot tall screen to create content. we will explore that venue because, as i understand it, we will be the first act of our kind in it where most of the people that have been in it have been bands, stand up and play instruments. so we will do what we do in that venue and explore the space to its maximum capacity.
