night at that homecoming concert. >> apology to anyone else around us. lady gaga, snoop, cher who looks amazing 78 years young and lauren hill and wyclef jean. the list goes on. it was spectacular. we're going to share the highlights. >> hard to just pick one right? this morning we have a lot of news that's developing including another emotional day in israel with the release of three more hostages. the hostages finally freed after being held by hamas for nearly 500 days. we're going to have the very latest in a live report from israel straight ahead. but we're going to begin with the weather. a big storm on the move and it is bringing a little bit of everything with it. snow, ice, rain. it just all depends on where you live. so let's get the latest forecast from angie lassman. angie, good morning. nice to have you back. >> great to be with you guys but boy do we have a busy weekend when it comes to the stm system. it's pretty much a mess. we've got rain. we've got thunderstorms and we've got ice. we've got of course the snow that we're going to see cover a

lot of area. this is what we're seeing through the day today though. notice that heavy snow is basically draped from the midwest across parts of the great lakes and new england and we'll see some wintry mix along with that as well. and then on the warm side of the system, it's severe storms and heavy rain and we'll see that flood risk for a lot of folks as well and not just today. this lasts into tomorrow for a good chunk of the country. we're going to see that snow and wind still be dealing with whiteout conditions across parts of the great lakes and that will be ongoing through your saturday. making travel difficult across the region in the air and on the roads. here's the snowfall totals you see. upwards of a foot. maybe a foot nap in parts of interior new england. that wintry mix of course going to leave us with ice accumulation as well and this will make the roads a mess and this is going to mean hazardous travel across the great lakes and parts of new england through the day tomorrow as well. big picture look for the flooding concern. we've got the potential to see some really heavy rain rather and of course that mes that the flooding bullseye is centered right across the tennessee valley and also see the significant river flooding

too. so heads-up for folks that live in this region. and then we've got of course the potential to see 5 to even 6 inches of rain in some of those regions. on top of that the severe weather guys, that could be a doozy. we'll see the potential for strong tornadoes through the afternoon and evening hours tonight. >> all right. angie, check back in a bit. we are following two major stories this morning out of washington. with a backlash growing after the justice department last night moved to dismiss federal corruption charges against new york city mayor eric adams. it comes after more than a half dozen federal prosecutors refused to go along and the administration is also abruptly firing thousands of additional federal workers and nbc's aaron gilchrist is at the white house with the very latest on all of it. good morning. >> reporter: top lawyers at the department of justice are being accused of dropping a corruption case against the mayor of new york city in order to keep him on board with the president's immigration goals. that as mayor adams prepares to sue the federal government over money earmarked to help his city deal with immigration.

this morning, new fallout is the trump administration's justice department moves to dismiss corruption charges against new york city mayor eric adams after a standoff with career prosecutors who refuse to go along. seven doj officials cutting in protest including the lead attorney overseeing the case in manhattan. a resignation letter obtained by nbc news, attorney hagueen scotten rebuking new leaders for saying the case was distracting adams from devoting his full attention to the president's priorities on immigration and crime. blasting whathe called dismissal with leverage as an abusive prosecutorial power adding if no lawyer is willing to give him that advice, then i expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool or enough of a coward to file your motion but it was never going to be me. >> we dropped crime in the city at remarkable levels. >> reporter: amid growing calls to step down adams defending his support of president trump's objectives appearing alongside border czar tom toman

services, the environmental protection agency, housing and urban development, the department of veterans affairs, the u.s. forest service, and the national nuclear security administration. now we're also learning that the san francisco sheriff's office is investigating after three men in doge shirts and maga hats entered city hall there and demanded digital information. employees refused and the men ran off before officers arrived. investigators don't believe they were real doge representatives. peter. >> aaron gill crist with the very latest on all of it this morning at the white house. thank you. turning overseas now. ukrainian president zelenskyy just finished speaking to world leaders and made a push for peace but he said the u.s. and russia can't lead him on the sidelines to achieve it. nbc's courtney cubeie is in munich with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: yeah. that's right laura. this morning, president volodymyr zelenskyy the ukrainian president, addressed the munich security conference and he repeated what has become

a pretty common theme here that europe needs to take more action to be self-sufficient for its security because they may not be able to rely on the united states as much as they have in the past. now these are the same themes that meetings with vice president j.d. vance and secretary of state marco rubio have also addressed this week. president zelenskyy called for a european army and a defense industrial base here that's strong enough that european allies don't have to rely on america system. but e also called for security guarantees for ukraine as peace talks seem more possible. addressed recent comments from u.s. defense secretary hegseth that the u.s. doesn't see nato membership as realistic. he responded saying he won't take nato membership off the table but right now putin seems to be the most influential member of nato. but yesterday zelenskyy admitted that ukraine still needs u.s. support.

>> can ewe ukraine survive without u.s. military support? >> probably -- a little bit worried. very, very difficult. and of course you know, the difficult situations, you have a chance. but we will have low chance. low chance to survive without support of the united states. >> reporter: conversations continue here at the security conference here through tomorrow in munich. laura? what happens next? >> reporter: yeah, that's the big question. so we know that president trump spoke with both vladimir putin and president zelenskyy this week. but we heard this morning from president zelenskyy and he said look, there are talks about continuing conversations between trump and putin. but he hopes that next time president trump calls, he'll get the call before vladimir putin. he wants to have that first

phone call with president trump. this week u.s. secretary of treasury presented him with a plan that would include the united states taking over 50% of ukraine's critical minerals, essentially as a compensation for all of the aid that the united states has provided to ukraine over the past several years. zelenskyy declined to sign that contract. but he said that that's something the two sides are actually still discussing. laura and peter? >> all right. courtney, we know you will continue to follow all of this. and you can see much more of kristin's interview with ukrainian president zelenskyy tomorrow morning on "meet the press." now to the breaking news this morning. three more hostages have been released by hamas after 498 days in captivity extending a delicate cease-fire in the region. among those released today, another american. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in israel with the very latests for us this morning. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning peter. so this was a release that

almost didn't happen if you remember hamas had said that it was not going to release these three because it said israel wasn't making good on its terms of the cease-fire. wasn't allowing enough aid to enter gaza specifically wasn't allowing fuel and heavy equipment including bulldozers. president trump made a threat, saying thatat if -- unless hama released them, that the cease- fire will be over and that all hell would break loose and israel would invade. prime minister benjamin netanyahu said the same thing and lo and behold an agreement was reached and hamas this morning did release the three hostages and the badly needed aid and the heavy equipment is set to enter gaza. so it -- does seem like this obstacle was overcome. so let me tell you what happened today and we were watching it at a watch party with some family members or

some supporters. quite an interesting perspective. so the release took place in gaza. hamas came out as is their custom now with a heavily armed presence. hundreds of hamas fighters surrounding the entire area. creating a security cordone. a show of force. then as also has become a custom a white van arrived with blacked out windows and the hostages were inside. the hostages were taken out. they were sort of -- not paraded. but they were shown to the public. there was a formal declaration in which hamas signed a piece of paper saying that they were releasing these three -- these three men. then they were handed over to the red cross. and they appeared to be in pretty good health and they were all walking on their own and they didn't appear as thin or emaciated as previous hostages have and as i said, we were at a home of supporters of

the american and he was there. he wasn't there. his -- his friends were there. as soon as they saw him come out of that van, they started to cheer. some people started to cry. he also has now been reunited with his wife and peter, there's an emotional fact here. when he was kidnapped, his wife was pregnant at the time. he locked her and -- his other children in a safe room and he went out to fight the hamas militants. they never found her. she -- she was just two months away from having the baby when he was taken. so he never got to see the baby. he is now free and reunited with his wife and that unborn baby. now born baby. >> you can only imagine that nearly 500 days waiting to meet a child. that you had never seen before. richard engel with the very late on his release and the othersrs' releastoday. thank you. back here at home, new

information is emerging about that deadly midair collision between a black hawk helicopter and a regional jet late last month. the ntsb now saying that the chopper's black box in fact shows that the military helicopter was flying too high but the pilots may not have known it. nbc's tom costello has more. >> reporter: two weeks after the midair crash killed 67 people, ntsb investigators say the army helicopter's black box indicates its radio altimeter showed 278 feet at the time of the crash. 78 feet above the 200-foot limit for helicopters. but the chopper pilots may not have known because their barometric altimeter may have been feeding bad data. in other words they were at a different amount to do. >> it's possible but we have a lot of work to do. >> reporter: the ntsb also says the chopper crew may not have heard a critical message from air traffic control to pass behind the regional jet. because one of the chopper

pilots keyed his mic over the words, pass behind the. the rj pilots may have tried to avoid the crash with a dramatic pitch up. one second before impact. was there any indication that the crew of the crj realized at the last second that they might be hit? >> yes. there was an indication. and that is -- we see a pitch up of the aircraft. so it was nine degrees up. >> reporter: helicopters in and around reagan national are required to fly down chopper route four hugging the east side of the potomac under 200 feet near dca. >> they had about one second between the time thrilled where the helicopter was and the time for impact. there was no chance to get out of the way for them. >> reporter: tim lily is first officer sam lily's officer. he also piloted around d.c. >> sam's departure. he left a giant hole in our family.

we were not ready for him to go yet. >> reporter: the ntsb says it will also look at whether the chopper crew's vision might have been limited by wearing night vision goggles. a final report on this midair crash could take up to a year. peter and laura, back to you. >> all right. meantime, jay-z is speaking out this morning after the civil suit accusing him and sean "diddy" combs of rape was dropped and nbc is here with more. chloe, good morning. >> reporter: hey guys, good morning. the lawsuit was withdrawn by the accuser's attorney on friday with prejudice. meaning it cannot be refiled. now this lawsuit had originally been filed in december on behalf of a woman only known as jane doe who claimed that they raped her when she was just 13 years old at a house party following the 2000 mtv video music awards. in a statement obtained by nbc news, jay-z said quote, i would not wish this experience on anyone. the trauma that my wife and children and loved ones and i have endured can never be

dismissed. the attorney had no comment when reached friday night by nbc news. now this dismissal comes after nbc news sat down exclusively with the accuser in an interview and subs carson wentzly found inconsistencies in her claims. one being that she said that her father drove five hours to pick her up after the alleged assault. but when reached by nbc news at the time, he could not remember the incident. she also claimed she met benji madden and joel madden at the house marty but they were touring in the midwest at the time. she stood by her allegations when asked about them, combs said it's quote, another confirmation the lawsuits are built on falsehoods. he has been sued by multiple people with allege sexual misconduct, claims he denies. peter, laura? >> all right. chloe maloss. thank you. it's february and i guess it's expected it will be messy for folks but when does it warm up for us? >> we have upper 70s in new orleans and it's going to get

insurance company has not provided enough evidence that it needs to charge more for coverage. earlier this month, state farm, which is the largest insurer in california, asked for an emergency increase, including a 22% hike for homeowners. but the commissioner says state farm needs to better explain why its finances are suffering despite other rate increases. he's calling the company to a meeting in oakland in two weeks to discuss it all. state farm says it is, quote, very disappointed the commissioner did not approve a rate increase, saying the la fires have further drained the company's resources. a third party intervenor in this case, consumer watchdog, will take part in that upcoming meeting. it supports the commissioners rejection. but once the meeting with state farm to be a public hearing as opposed to private. in sausalito, all southbound lanes of 101 are back open this morning after heavy rain caused a massive mudslide covering the highway thursday night. caltrans

spent all day friday cleaning the roads. crews installed new barriers, known as k-rails, to make sure if anything else comes down, it will stay behind that barrier. the roads reopened just before seven last night. we're going to turn to the forecast now. luckily, no more rain, at least for today. but it is cold out there with cinthia. yeah, we're finally getting a break from that rain. but settling in with the cold valley air up there in the north bay and parts of the san jose foothills, down here, down into gilroy. so we're watching for those low to mid 30s, some areas of fog and the pahy ice that could form, also known aslack ice. only places i was looking at that fog right now were parts of vallejo along highway 37, and some developing around half moon bay, so we'll keep an eye on that as the morning goes on. we start with 34 in calistoga as well as in danville. 38 palo alto to 36 in south san jose. the peninsula seems to be our typically warmer spot every morning in those mid 40s right there for san mateo,

fever did not rise overnight. it's the latest in a series of health problems for francis who recently fell twice hurting his arm and his chin. the pope's public appearances have been canceled throug monday. just an awful scene in wyoming on friday after a massive and deadly pile-up inside a highway tunnel. the crash involved trucks and other vehicles sending a huge plume of black smoke out of the i-80 tunnel which is the length of three football fields. police say at least two people were killed and five others injured there. the tunnel is closed while authorities on scene make sure it's safe to start driving through again. hundreds of thousands of jubilant philadelphia eagles' fans myself included lined the city's famed broad street for a victory parade friday. the city celebrating the eagles' super bowl blowout of the kansas city chiefs. players and coaches waving to supporters from atop buses, some fans got a bit rowdy with

flooding but already quiteactive across parts of thetonnen the valley. notice the thunderstorms from memphis to knoxville. a flash flood watch for 21 million people across the region as the system works to the east. i think through sunday we can see spots that maybe get 5, 6 inches and widespread areas even up into the northeast an inch to 2 inches. but still watch for the flooding concerns through the day today. specifically though across parts of the deep south, that's where we're concerned about the storms ramping up and potentially being strong to severe. we have the chance for some of the tornadoes across the region. specifically you can see where you see that kind of hatched area of red. that's from memphis down to monroeville. that's whe we're concerned about those ef2s or stronger tornadoes. on top of that those gusty winds as well right now through petaluma. pretty close in pleasanton at 36 san carlos. the peninsula

thanks for joining us on this saturday, february 15th. i'm kira klapper, california's insurance commissioner has turned down state farm's request to increase its rates for now. commissioner ricardo lara sent a letter to state farm saying the insurance company has not provided enough evidence that it needs to charge more for coverage. earlier this month, state farm, the largest insurer in california, asked for an emergency increase, including a 22% hike for homeowners. but the commissioner says state farm needs to better explain why its finances are suffering despite other rate increases. he's calling the company to a meeting in oakland in two weeks to discuss it all. state farm says it is, quote, very disappointed the commissioner did not approve a rate increase, saying the los

angeles fires have further drained its resources. a third party intervenor, consumer watchdog, will take part in that upcoming meeting. it says it supports the commissioner's decision. but once the meeting with state farm to be a public hearing, not private. in sausalito, all southbound lanes of 101 are back open this morning after heavy rain caused a mudslide covering the highway thursday night. caltrans spent all yesterday cleaning the roads. crews installed new barriers, known as k-rails, to make sure if anything else comes down, it stays behind that barrier. roads reopened just before seven last night. thankfully, a break in that damaging rain but cold out there. cinthia pimentel is here. yeah, we are looking at chilly 30 right now through our valleys, 37 right now in san rafael. we're going to keep the cloud cover rolling around throughout the day and actually keep those temperatures pretty cool in the upper 50s as we go
