>> the latest round bringing more of both over the weekend and turning deadly in the south. torrenential raitriggered devastating flooding. this morning, tens of millions are already on alert for the next storm. >> we are going to get to al's full forecast in a moment. the mounting delays and cancellations at the nation's airports. we want to begin with kathy park. she is in flood-ravaged hazard, kentucky. >> reporter: good morning, peter. parts of the south received up to 6 inches of rain, causing creeks and rivers to overflow. behind me, you have the north fork of the kentucky river. it's running pretty high this morning. the governor reported over 1,000 rescues this weekend. as you can see, the rain moved out of here, but the snow is now moving in. this morning, parts of the south recovering from a weekend of wild weather. violent storms sweeping across kentucky, tennessee and west virginia, where streams and creeks surged to historic

levels, making roads impassable and causing severe damage to homes and businesses. rising waters proving too much for a levy that burst in tennessee, flooding entire neighborhoods. while in other parts of the state, people and pets had to be rescued by boat. the extreme weather also spawning a destructive tornado in alabama. >> we have a lot of damage downtown. you can see behind me, roofs are blown off most of our buildings. >> reporter: in kentucky, flash flooding stranding drivers and residents across the state. first responders finding themselves caught in the chaos, too. this firehouse in hazard flooded by intense rains. at least nine fatalities reported in kentucky. the governor saying most of the tragedies occurred as people tried to drive through high water, including a mother and her child. >> this is one of the most serious weather events we have dealt with in at least a decade. the biggest challenge of this event is it's everywhere. >> reporter: president trump approving a disaster declaration

for kentucky. and it's not over yet. as the state braces for powerful winds and more snow. in louisville, the wintery mess being blamed for this massive pile-up. a blast of snow also barrelling across the great lakes and into new england where officials say it may have played a role in this partial building collapse. this extreme weather has also knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers across the mid-atlantic and northeast states. back here in the south, we're catching a bit of a break from the weather today, but that arctic blast, that cold air will be settling in this week. peter? >> it'll be the start of a cold, messy week, kathy. we appreciate it. thank you. now to the severe impact on travel. rain, snow and high winds making a mess of the holiday weekend, especially at airports with thousands of flight cancellations and delays from coast to coast. nbc's erin mclaughlin joins us live from newark airport in new jersey. erin, good morning.

how sit looking already? >> reporter: good morning, laura. well, air travel is off to a bumpy start as folks head home this president's day nationwide. so far there is 967 flight delays and 432 flight cancellations and counting. and that's not just down to the weather but also the travel impacts. you can see the misery map there primarily impacting major airports in the northeast. over the weekend, there was almost 10,000 delays and more than 1,800 flight cancellations. we're talking about delays in excess of three hours in all major airports here in the new york area. and then delays of up to an hour and a half down at reagan national airport there in d.c. primarily due to the weather. it is not just impacting the northeast, but also the south as

well. that storm that kathy was just talking about wreaking havoc on the nation's busiest airport, hundreds of flight delays there in atlanta. wind gusts there up to 60 miles per hour yesterday. and everyone hold on to their hats because it is expected to be windy in places again today. >> not what we want to hear. erin, is there anything travelers can do? any tips for these delays? >> reporter: you know, laura, experts say don't stand in line if your flight is delayed. you can manage the situation using the texts, phone numbers and links the airline sends you. should speed things up. >> erin, thank you. appreciate it. we want to bring in al now. tracking the weekend storms and this week's new threat. i was at the airport in d.c. yesterday. there were tons of delays. the line was enormous. al, it was rough.

>> peterpeterboro airport repor turbulence out there. and another travel tip, there is this thing called the train. so you might get that. anyway, 60 million people for high wind advisories and warnings. probably going to be more delays today. look at these wind gusts up to 53 miles an hour. mount washington, 120-mile-per-hour wind gusts, 41 mile an hour wind gusts in d.c. so airport delays big. 37 million people under winter storm warnings, watch, even blizzard warnings down into west virginia. scattered snow blanketing the central plains. the system starts to intensify, dies down into the southern plains. there is a large area of rain, snow and ice stretching from houston all the way up to st. louis. and then we move on into wednesday. the system moves across the southeast. the heaviest snow probably going to be in the mid-atlantic states, icing as well. then it moves off the coast. we're not looking at any extensive snow for the northeast area, especially new york city, but we are looking at lake-effect snow, as well. so through wednesday, 6 to 12

inches of snow for springfield. kansas city, 3 to 6. st. louis 3 to 8. nashville will see 2 to 4 inches. same for louisville. as we move to thursday and across the eastern sea board, the highest amounts along the virginia coast with some areas picking up about 6 to 9 inches of snow there. otherwise, things not too bad. we do have some icing as well from oklahoma, again right on into the southeastern atlantic coast. guys? >> all right, al. see you back in a little bit. another big story this morning. the trump administration's sweeping cuts to the federal workforce. now, the pace is picking up over the weekend with more layoffs. it's across a number of federal agencies. and this morning the elon musk-led effort is pushing access to the irs system, including personal taxpayer information. nbc's senior white house correspondent garrett haake joins us with the latest. garrett, good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning to you. the president remains in frida this morning, but his wrecking ball overhaul of the federal government here in washington

continues with layoffs now being reported at the cdc, the faa and the agency that overseas nuclear stockpiles. while democrats have been powerless to stop or slow this agenda, the courts have slowed it some. now perhaps the first case headed to the supreme court. overnight, president trump's sweeping plan to re-shape the federal government reaching the supreme court in its first major test. the administration appealing a federal judge's decision to strike down trump's attempt to fire a government ethics watchdog. how the justices rule on this case could be larger implications for the legal viabilitof trump's strategy which faced more than 60 lawsuits so far. the president giving a potential hint into the legal thinking behind his expansive moves and coming under fire after posting over the weekend, quote, he who saves the country does not violate any law. >> the dominant objective of this administration is corruption and lawlessness. >> reporter: it comes as elon

musk's department of efficiency also known as doge is expanding its reach inside the federal government. on sunday, nbc news learning an irs worker affiliated with doge is expected to seek access to a highly sensitive computer system that contains taxpayers personal information. the doge affiliated worker seeking to identify fraud and protect taxpayers, an administration official said. while the civilian workforce represents a small portion of federal spending, over the weekend, the layoffs and firings of federal workers continued to pile up nationwide, including hundreds at the centers for disease control, according to two agency sources, as well as 400 at the department of homeland security and 200 at fema, according to department spokespeople. president trump touting his sweeping and rapid fire efforts after visiting the daytona 500 over the weekend, which included taking the beast limousine for a lap around the track. >> this country has made more progress in the last three weeks than in the past four years. we are respected again as a country. >> reporter: but the

cost-cutting strategy is running into headwinds. the white house trying to re-hire safety workers for the agency that oversees the nation's nuclear stockpile but are struggling to find them because they didn't have their contact information. and the trump administration has also began firing several hundred faa probation workers. according to their union, these folks have been on the job less than two years. it's the same time the transportation secretary announced the president ordered him to create a nenew world-ass air traffic control system. that effort set to involve elon musk's team from spacex. laura? >> another busy week. thanks. overseas now, secretary of state marco rubio is in the middle east ahead of high-stakes talks aimed at ending russia's three-year war in ukraine. chief foreign correspondent richard engel is on the ground in ukraine for us. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. from the hard-hit city of h

kherson in southern ukraine, and russia confirmed this morning that it's taking part in high-level talks with the trump administration that are set to begin tomorrow in saudi arabia. for now, the trump administration is meeting separately with ukrainian and russian officials ahead of joint talks, which still need to be scheduled. as diplomacy that could redraw ukraine's borders kicks into high gear, russia is trying to show it has the upper hand, firing 150 drones at ukraine overnight, according to the ukrainian military. russia and ukraine are each trying to show dominance and take as much territory as they can before a peace deal that president trump insists both sides want. today secretary of state marco rubio arrived in saudi arabia to meet the russian side. on sunday, president trump said he will be joining the process soon, meeting directly with russian president vladimir putin. >> i think he wants to end it

and they want to end it fast. both of them. and volodymyr zelenskyy wants to end it, too. >> reporter: president volodymyr zelenskyy won't be attending the talks in saudi arabia, according to his office, but he is nearby in the united arab emirates on what officials described as a previously scheduled trip to boost support for ukraine. president volodymyr zelenskyy told kristin welker ukraine can't be cut out of negotiations from a peace settlement that could see ukraine surrender large amounts of territory currently occupied by russian troops. >> have you been given any assurances that ukraine will have an equal seat at the negotiating table? >> so i will never accept any decision between the united states and russia involving ukraine. >> reporter: in a basement bunker in the ukrainian city of kherson this morning, children gather for a small party organized by volunteers. it is a valentine's day celebration to lift their spirits.

the city is under constant russian attack. after three years of war, many ukrainians want to return to normal life, but they don't want their fate to be decided for them by president trump. >> like going to get behind our back, and we don't like it because we don't understand that. >> reporter: feels like their negotiations are happening in private and your future is being determined -- >> under a big question. >> reporter: under a big question mark. for now, europe is being effectively cut out of this negotiation process, with european officials meeting today in paris for what are, in practice, consultations among themselves. peter? >> as we saw more strikes there from russians last week. richard engel, thank you. secretary of state rubio met with israel's prime minister focussing on escalating tensions in the middle east. we also saw the weekend release of three more hostages, including an american israeli.

today, of course, marks 500 days since the october 7th attack that triggered the war in gaza. nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons is with us now. keir, good morning. >> reporter: hey there. good morning to you. it really is a flurry of diplomatic activity. an israeli team heading for cairo for cease-fire talks. a picture of the enormity of the task, it is the same trump administration team negotiating the kinds of issues that richard was talking about there and trying to continue the peace talks over the middle east. and it is as fragile as ever. the cease-fire is holding, but lasting peace looks a long way off. an israeli strike in gaza killed three and 17 were injured in ongoing raids in the west bank. prime minister netanyahu and marco rubio on his trip to israel as secretary of state praising president trump's

controversial plans to rebuild gaza and vowing hamas cannot have a role in its future. >> frankly, as long as it stands as a force that can govern, administer, or threaten by use of violence, peace becomes impossible. >> reporter: this weekend, the u.s. says, it struck al-qaeda in syria. a country now run by turkish-backed islamists. but both men singling out iran. >> israel and america stand shoulder to shoulder in encountering the threat of iran. we agreed that the ayatollahs must not have nuclear weapons. >> reporter: in gaza over the weekend, another american hostage released, greeted by his wife. on october 7th, he locked her pregnant in a safe room and went off to fight hamas. he never returned until now. this weekend he saw his baby girl for the first time. his family certain more hostages, including another american, will be released.

kentucky. good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you. yeah, parts of the south are in recovery mode after a weekend of wild weather here in kentucky. some spots saw six inches of rain causing creeks and rivers to overflow. at the kentucky river, you can still see it is running pretty high this morning. the governor reported over a thousand rescues this morning. all counties in the state impacted by these storms and sadly nine reported fatalities so far. trag tragically, a lot of these deaths occurred as people drove into the high waters. but it wasn't just kentucky. a state of emergency was declared in tennessee. a levy broke there, flooded out entire neighborhoods. and the extreme weather being blamed for spawning a tornado in alabama. up north, several inches of snow fell in new england, making a mess on the roadways. hundreds of thousands of customers are without power in the mid atlantic andnd northea

numerous leadership positions. back in 2017, she concluded her target career last year and today serves on multiple nonprofit and for profit boards. speaking about leadership to groups across the country. she has put all that wisdom into a new book, "lead like you mean it." integrity and purpose from the c-suite. we're so happy you're here. this is such a fantastic book. i wish i had this book in my 20s because i think it has valuable lessons for people that want to get to the c suite. people who are already in the c-suite. you promised you would be vulnerable and open and you were. >> thank you. >> tell me about the title and what it means. >> i think we all want to be happy, healthy, financially secure, and to do meaningful work. we want a life that's filled with purpose. and "lead like you mean it" provides steps and tools that help all of us lead with meaning. not just executives. this is for everyone. i feel strongly that we should be taking a wholistic approach. to lives and careers, that

been told that we're one person at work and one person outside the workplace. >> especially women. >> right. and we have to tear those walls down. we're one human being, one life, only 24 hours in a day. so much of this is centered on believing in and betting on you. >> talk to me about those types of questions that you ask when you are defining your personal purpose statements. some of these key questions, what should people at home know? what should you be asking? >> when you are writing your personal purpose statement, you started by thinking about how you're investing in yourself, betting on yourself. after you've done that work of knowing, showing, and taking care of yourself, you're jumping into writing your personal purpose statement. before we go to the purpose statement, making sure you're really grounded in who you are is really essential, so you've done the self-care work. that you know who you are deep down, that you are really showing up for yourself and telling your story confidently and that you are focussing on your overall well-being, right?

standing in your power. and after you have done that, then you are in a position to move forward and develop your personal purpose statement. in doing so, there are some questions that i think everyone should be thinking about. as you are answering those questions, you will be able to write that statement. things like, what do i want to do? what is the impact i want to make? how do those things align? time is a precious resource. you have to treat it as such. and answering the questions will not always be easy, right? but the book gives inspiring examples that will help you do that. but what i want people to remember, purpose is power. you are the ceo of your life and career and you get to make the decisions about what's right for you, and that's empowering. >> you are in the driver's seat. >> absolutely. >> who helped you figure out your purpose? you are a very self-directed person. but was there somebody in your life who sort of helped you see that path? >> you know, i'm very fortunate

that i've had sponsored, allies, mentors, advocates throughout my life, starting with my parents. they were foundational in my learning. but even through my career, i was blessed to have people like mrs. coretta scott king who really helped me see and identify what my purpose could be. she talked about do what you have to do, do what you are called to do. and there have been men and women in my life who have real nurtured me, and i feel strongly that i want to pay that forward. help nurture others. >> yeah. and she was clearly such a beautiful influence. >> and still influences me today. >> speaking of which, you write also in the book about nurturing relationships, which i think sometimes adults forget. it takes work. >> yeah, a lot of work. and relationships are so essential to our success and joy in our lives and careers. my grandma used to say there are few things in life you do well by yourself. this is an example of that. relationships also help us to deal with issues like isolation, burnout and disengagement.
