4:30 pm
using president's day to protest the commander in chief. bay area cities taking part in a nationwide day of action. good afternoon everyone, i'm janelle wang. welcome to nbc bay area news at 4:30. our robert honda is in san jose where protesters had a message for president trump. we are also tracking other stories on this
4:31 pm
president's day, including a teen stabbed and killed at santana row. what we're learning about the 15 year-old, who was out on a valentine's day date. also, what does our weather have in store for us this week? a live look in san jose where it was nice and dry. our meteorologist, rob mayeda is here and he's going to tell us when we're expecting some 70 later this week. and a home in the bay area with an asking price under a half $1 million. yes, under a half a million. what's the catch? our velena jones fills us in on all the strings attached. but let's begin with breaking news. you might have just seen it on nightly news, but investigators just gave an update with new information. at least 17 people are hurt after a delta airlines plane flipped upside down upon landing in toronto, canada. you can see the plane on its top in this video taken by passenger john nelson. it happened earlier this afternoon, local time. amazingly no fatalities. and take a look at this video.
4:32 pm
another passenger, pico boulevard coco gauff, snapped this video while he was being helped out of the airplane by first responders. all 80 people on the flight were quickly accounted for. 76 passengers and four crew members. we do not know whether any of these passengers are critically injured, and we don't know exactly what caused the crash. but the delta plane landed in snowy conditions. airport emergency workers mounted a textbook response, reaching the site within minutes and quickly evacuating the passengers. we stood up our emergency operations center with delta airlines and representatives from fire, police, paramedics, security and our fedal agency partners. the transportation safety board of canada is in charge of this investigation. we're going to move now to the protests across the bay area and across the country. they called today, not my president's day, calling out president trump and a member of his white house,

elon musk. let's bring in our robert honda. he is live in san jose, where more than a thousand people came out to demonstrate on this holiday. robert. that's right. janelle. in fact, it was probably closer to 2000 by the time the event was winding down. we're here at the circle of palms plaza in downtown san jose, and as you can see, it's a pretty big area. and for several hours today, it was very crowded. that's pretty significant because ie been to some rallies recently where the attendance was at the most 1 or 200 people. and i think today, not only because it was a holiday, but also because there was sort of more of a general theme of not my president's day gave people a chance more to focus their anger not on specific issues, but more about the president and elon musk. and so that was one reason why i think there was such a big turnout. also, too, a big message today was consistently throughout the whole event was that it's time for people who don't agree with the trump administration policies to go
4:34 pm
out and speak up publicly. there's this feeling that the flurry of executive orders, as well as just the nature of the way the administration has been going about its business, that people are either a little bit intimidated or not really sure how to react to everything that's happening. and so today, a big message to the people was time to get over that intimidation, time to start getting out publicly and speaking up for what's happening in the country. and so i think that was one big reason why there was such a big turnout. and it was also significant that it was such a big turnout. yeah. on this holiday especially. and i saw video of assemblyman ash. he was there with his megaphone. what was his message to demonstrators today? yeah, it was interesting because kohler was one of the few public officials that was here. and throughout the protest rally, as well as the march. people were kind of chanting that they wanted to know where was the
4:35 pm
congressional members, such as sam liccardo or ro khanna. they were wanting to know where are they, because they feel like they need to have them coming out to these kind of rallies to show sort of the unity of the democrats. but caro was here and he spoke to the crowd as well as talk to me afterwards. and one of the things that he also emphasized was i saying before, which is people need to stop being now, so afraid to speak out against the administration, whether it's the public, whether it's the media or whether it's public officials. he's saying that the flurry of activity has really sort of cowed people, and he wants people now to speak up. and he was very encouraging to the crowd, and he was very encouraged by what he saw, because the march itself really just showed how many people were here. it stretched all the way through downtown, and it was like 15 or 20 minutes before the crowd of the crowd could even join the march. so colorado definitely trying to push the
4:36 pm
idea that it was time for people to speak out. and he was talking about public officials as well. okay. robert honda live in san jose, thank you so much. a similar scene up in san francisco. you can see there nbc bay area sky ranger captured this video from earlier this afternoon in front of city hall, where dozens of people gathered in opposition of the trump administration. the san jose police are still searching for the suspects in the stabbing death of a 15 year old boy at santana row on friday night. the santa clara county coroner has not yet confirmed the name of the victim, but a gofundme post that appears to be from the boy's family says the 15 year-old was attacked by a group of juveniles while on a date with his girlfriend to celebrate valentine's day. the post says the boy was beaten and then stabbed in the heart. police say the attackers then fled santana row. police have not confirmed the number of people involved or whether they were also juveniles. today at santana row holiday, shoppers were stunned to learn the victim was just 15.
4:37 pm
that's so abrupt. like that's the way his life endeded. like,i feel bad for, like, him and his family because i'm like, he was 15. like he had so much life left to live. police say they are still investigating the motive and circumstances surrounding the stabbing. hundreds of faa employees received notice over the weekend that they've been fired. it comes as the nation still mourns the deadly midair crash over the potomac river that claimed 67 lives just three weeks ago. investigations into that crash have exposed understaffing issueses at the faa, which empls 50,000 workers. but the president of the professional aviation specialists union said 300 members were just terminated by the new trump administration. they include mechanics, information specialists and aviation safety assistants, but no air traffic controllers, who already face a nationwide shortage of more than 3000. we got mixed reactions from local aviation experts about the
4:38 pm
significance of these cuts at the faa. all these people, although they may not be talking to an aircraft every day, still play a very critical role in the air safety system of the united states. a few hundred employees who are all probationary new employees or new to their position. these are not air traffic controllers, air safety inspectors, or front line aviation maintenance specialists. a spokesman for the faa said on social media that the agency has retained employees who perform safety and critical functions. he also said the faa continues to hire air traffic controllers, mechanics and other support staff. we expect to get more precise layoff numbers from the agency when it reopens after the holiday. what is presidents day? a lot of people off today and enjoying a long weekend and it's dry. it's nice to see some dry skies and sunshine. no rain. dry conditions up to the sierra as well. we got sunshine. we got some clouds out there. temperatures in the 50s right
4:39 pm
now. but what if i told you we might see 70? wow. later this week, a taste of spring like weather on the way. but before we get there, a little bit of midweek rain in the forecast. and there's not a lot where that's concerned. that's going to come in on wednesday morning. then after that, the warm up begins friday. and as we move forward into next weekend, 60s and 70s will be in reach now tomorrow morning like we had this morning. patchy fog around for the morning commute. then as we head through the afternoon, we'll see temperatures climbing to the low to mid 60s around san jose. so a little bit warmer tomorrow. wind out of the south late in the day. upper 50s to low 60s from san francisco to oakland. but we will also see those increasing clouds going through the day tuesday. but the rain producing clouds likely will hold off until early on wednesday morning. wednesday morning's commute for the north bay will have a little bit of rain at times, and you can see it right here as we approach 9:00 wednesday morning across the north bay. but watch what happens during the day. wednesday afternoon. not much left by the time it gets to san jose. partly cloudy skies as early as wednesday evening. top
4:40 pm
rain totals with this midweek rain chance will be in sonoma county. could locally see a third to a half inch of rain. and then that's it. skies start to clear out as high pressure builds in stormy in the pacific northwest, but very warm by this time of year standards. as we head into the weekend, a few spots may be climbing closer to the mid 70. stay tuned to vianey arana full forecast coming up today at five for the latest on that 7-day forecast. back to you. what a 180 from a week ago. thanks so much rob. we're now going to go to our making it in the bay series. and this housing listing caught our attention today. a home in berkeley on the market for under $400,000. yes, you heard right. under 400 k. if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. so we sent our velena jones to check out the house. okay. velena. what is the catch here? catcher? well, janelle. right. we all want to know what the catch is because that under a million here in the bay area, specifically in berkeley, you don't hear that a lot, right? so this is just
4:41 pm
under $400,000. it's in a beautiful location. the caveat is it comes with an 83 year old tenant who will live there in perpetuity, rent free. it also comes wit several different disclaimers they talk about. the building has had no maintenance done since 1974. the roof of the garage has collapsed, as well as a sunroof. the roof on that has collapsed as well. there is an active water leak from the main line in the basement that has been there for what they expect or think is over a decade. there is also monthly utilities that cost about 2000 per month. there is an additional tenant that lives in a lower unit that pays 1200 per month. so that doesn't even cost. that doesn't even cover the cost of utilities. and so you have this prime location here in berkeley. but not only do you have all the maintenance issues, you also have an 83 year
4:42 pm
old tenant that will continue to live in that property even when it's sold. okay. it's looks actually has potential needs remodeling. it looks like a beautiful neighborhood. what are neighbors telling you about this? they probably know this 83 year o man, right? right. you know, so the neighbors say they feel for that 83 year old man. it's unclear what happened to that man in terms of why that property has not been kept up all these years. but many neighbors that we spoke to today said they have seen this property kind of degrade over the years. many people have even been interested in purchasing that property in previous years, but they are happy to see that it's on the market because they hope that that will come with revitalization of that property. you know, this is one of the only homes in the neighborhood that looks like this. and so there has been fire safety issues and different safety concerns as well that have come along with this home. so neighbors are really hoping that
4:43 pm
someone will come in, redevelop that property and that it will be safe to live in. now we have learned that a developer, a local developer here, has already purchased that property. so it is pending. so, you know, we see this listing. it's not going to be on the market for too long. apparently it's going to work for that person. and so the neighbors are hoping that with this new revitalization, revitalization, it will help improve the neighborhood. yeah. with risk there comes great reward, potentially with this home. okay. velena, thank you so much for checking it out. preparing inmates for life after prison. the new program going beyond basketball, and the major boost it's getting from the warriors. also giving back to those in need. we're going to introduce you to the south bay students stepping up to help victims of the l.a. fires and the incredible support they

riding high following this weekend's 2025 nba all star game last night, the four time nba championship winner added another trophy to his very crowded case mvp. his team, which included oakland's damian lillard and former teammate kevin durant, won the tournament at chase center. the game featured lots of nods to the warriors and bay area culture, and it included a celebration of bay area music from 40 to 2 short saweetie and in vogue. more than the dunks, the plays and all the hype, basketball is proving it has the power to transform beyond the game. as nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab explains, the golden state warriors are leading the way. dunks and shots brought fans to their feet during all-star

weekend, but it's our golden state warriors who are proving there's much more to this game than the game of basketball. much like the game of life doesn't always go according to the playbook. two on this side, two on this side. sometimes it can mean you get taken out of the game. i committed my crime in 19 years old. came to prison at 20. they gave me life without the possibility of parole for murder. robbery. but what happens if you get a chance to be put back in? would you be ready? and how would you start again? i don't react, i respond, i take a breath and i move on. let it go. get it back. next play, i attack. what we do is we use sport, in this case basketball, as a catalyst for change. hilton freud is the global ceo of the training project born out of the united kingdom. they engage incarcerated people in football based programs to rebuild life

skills and even obtain a qualification which could improve chances of employment upon release. recently, the twinningroject partnered with a club in los angeles, and that is when the golden state warriors took notice. i got to give a lot of credit to our director, claudia. least, you know, she kind of discovered the twinning project, saw what was going on and what was being done with soccer. and she had the idea of, well, why can't we do this with basketball warriors? and that is what the warriors did. more than 20 incarcerated people have graduated from the warriors partnership, and they can't seem to get enough of the community that's being built. we appreciate you all from the bottom of our hearts, but it's. and they came in that name on your shirt. it's the twinning project. ray woodfork is serving his life sentence at the california state prison solano in vacaville. i killed mr. roberto granados arguello street on december 20th of 2001. that moment changed my life forever. woodfork went through the training project program not

knowing what to expect, but what he got out of it. the blues, they don't see this. they treat me like a human. sometimes you have to believe in someone else's belief in you until yours kicks in. nba champion and former warrior festus ezili knows sometimes it's that coach in the game or in life that makes all the difference. just like my mentor did for me. i'm doing it for other people. and it's not. it's not just because i'm a samaritan. i just feel like it's my responsibility. i've been given that platform. some of them did some bad things, and they're trying to change their lives for the better. i was able to find myself here, so i was able to actually redefine who i was and not allow that moment to define me as a person. and like i said, the warriors are the first basketball team to partner with the twinning project, but they may not be the last. the twinning project says they're already getting much interest from other teams in san francisco. ginger conejero saab

nbc, bay area news. thank you ginger. a troubling discovery in schools across the u.s. american students have been falling behind in reading and math since the pandemic. that is according to the new education recovery scorecard released by stanford and harvard. the data breaks down the pace of academic recovery measures in schools across the u.s, and it shows students are nearly half a grade level behind and are still trying to make up for learning missed during the pandemic. researchers also say a big reason for the decline in learning is chronic absenteeism, or missing more than 10% of the school year as absenteeism goes up. it doesn't just harm the student who is absent, but it ends up affecting the ability to learn of lots of other kids in the classroom. because just as kids are sort of in and out on different days, it disrupts the flow of instruction. reardon also says although california students are still behind in reading and math compared to 2019, data shows the students here are not suffering as much as those in other states across

the country. california ranks 18th in reading. across the us, thousands of families are looking for new homes after those devastating wildfires in l.a. county. they're also looking to replace items burned in the fire. and for many that for many of them, that includes essentials. our marcus washington shows us how some bay area students are helping out. a south bay group of students giving back one sock at a time, making us all bay area proud. get this fourth grade students at latimer school in the moreland school district in san jose decided to launch a sock drive to collect new socks for victims of the recent los angeles wildfires. we spoke to two of those students about what inspired them to act. the first needed items was diapers and wipes, but we thought that that could be a bit hard for families to access. and socks and underwear were the second most needed item. and those are easy to get. we really want to help them and kind of give them like
