5:30 pm
this case and trying to give inmates the tools they'll need for life after prison. the new program, which is getting help from the warriors. thanks for joining us on this holiday. the news at 530 starts right now i'm janelle wang. and i'm raj mathai. as promised, he's slashing the government. president trump's administration sent out termination notices to hundreds of workers within the faa. this happened over the weekend, and it comes as understaffing was exposed within air traffic control towers following that recent washington, d.c, crash that killed 67 people. nbc bay area's thom jensen shows us none of the latest firings involve people in the towers, but many experts are still concerned. the headlines. faa air traffic firings might look startling, especially considering recent history. but aviation experts we talked to say it could be a lot worse for
5:31 pm
passengers and their families. learned about the trump administration's faa firings as they grabbed their bags. given all of the plane crashes, that i don't know much about it, but it seems like a bad idea and dropped off loved ones at san jose international airport this afternoon. as safe as possible? yeah, of course, 100%. yeah. more staff better. obviously, the president of the professional aviation specialists union said 300 members were given notices over the weekend. they include mechanics, information specialists and aviation safety sistants, among others. but air traffic controllers, who already face a nationwide shortage of more than 3000, have not been let go for short term. there's probably going to be very little impact, but eventually these roles have to be filled. aviation expert mike mccarron, who worked at sfo for more than 25 years, says the positions are still important. so all these people, although they may not be talking to an aircraft every day, still play a very critical role in the air safety system of the united states. but doug rice, a veteran bay area airlines pilot with
5:32 pm
more than 50 years of flying experience, says it's not that big of a deal. these are not air traffic controllers. air safety inspectors or frontline aviation maintenance specialists. rice says the workers might play critical roles someday, but these are new hires, not very many of them. considering the faa employs about 50,000 people. what we're looking at here is such a minuscule amount. a spokesman for the faa said on social media that the agency has retained employees who perform safety and critical functions. he also said the faa continues to hire air traffic controllers, mechanics and other support staff. we expect to learn a lot more about exactly who was let go after the faa administrative offices reopen after the holiday. in san jose, thom jensen, nbc, bay area news. president trump also taking a case to the highest court. the trump administration has asked the u.s. supreme court to overturn a lower court ruling, which reinstated the head of an independent agency who was fired
5:33 pm
by president trump. hampton dellinger, a biden appointee, was still serving his five year term when he was fired. now, if the supreme court agrees with president trump, he could have even more power. joining us now is our political analyst, larry gerston. haven't heard that much about this case. tell us the details about it. i haven't heard about it, but let me tell you something. it's a barn burner for so many other cases that are similar. so this is the story you said about hampton dellinger. he got this job. it was set up by congress. this whole office was set up by congreress, the office of specil counsel, which, by the way, watches whistleblowers to make sure they are protected. so the president fired him. dellinger says you have no right to fire me because this office was set up by congress, and they're the ones who should have the termination. okay, so why is this case so important? what could it mean? janelle, come with me into the weeds. because what we're going to talk about here is a little constitutional stuff that you probably studied in high school or college. it's about separation of powers. that's james madison's brilliant
5:34 pm
contribution to the constitution, where he said, look, we want to make sure that no one of these three branches the president, congress, the courts, no one has more power, too much power than the others. and so we check and balance. and with that, there's the fear here that if the president can go ahead and do this fire person, you know, even though he's entitled to stay there according to the law, what else can he do? what other kinds of things can he do to take more powers from congress and therefore become the most important of those three people? we're still waiting for the supreme court to hear if they're going to even take up the case. but if it ends up siding with the president, what could that mean? it could mean adding to the president's power. remember, they had that great big case last year about immunity, saying that the president basically can't be charged with any crime as long as he's in office. now, you add to that the fact that he can go ahead and hire and fire anybody he wants, regardless of whether congress puts that person in, has any kind of constraints. if that's the case, there is the fear that this president will
5:35 pm
really go amuck in terms of having so much that he dominates everybody else. and by the way, there are 70 cases out there, 70 cases. many of th are based on this kind of thing, where the president's fired people who are entitled to be there. so if the president makes it through this and survives, watch out. if he doesn't, some of these other cases may have a chance. it's a big, big issue. so he can fire without cause there could be grounds. i mean, they proven they've done nothing wrong. that's right. that's that's what the president says because he is in charge. congress thinks otherwise, and so does mr. dellinger. okay. we're going to have to wait and hear when the supreme court if it will take up this case. and that's supposed to be decided, i think, this week. right. whether they'll take it up and how soon. okay. larry gerston, thank you so much. raj. let's move on to some other headlines tonight. all-star weekend has come and gone. san francisco basking in the international spotlight. but away from the spotlight. an update now from the warriors about their partnership with local prisons. the twinning project started in the uk five
5:36 pm
years ago. it paired premier league soccer teams with local prisons for a six week camp. the program came here to the u.s. after the warriors decided to partner with those organizers. the goal is to teach inmates how to become basketball coaches, which will give them skills to be leaders and role models. my mentor keith honestly did for me. i'm doing it for other people. and it's not. it's not just because i'm a samaritan. i just feel like it's my responsibility. i've been given that platform. some of them did some bad things, and they're trying to change their lives for the better. once the inmates finish this program, they'll get a qualification that could improve their chances of employment when released. more than 20 people have graduated from the partnership at solano prison. one of the solutions to the housing crisis only created more problems for some homeowners and emptied their bank accounts. i'm consumer investigator chris kamara. state law could change to protect you from the same costly
5:37 pm
predicament. i'll show you how next. hi, vianey. hey, chris. and the weather has been pretty nice, but it can get even better. is that even a thing? yes. we're going to see fantastic forecast ahead. but first we do have some clouds and a mix of some sunshine. plus who's got rain chances in their forecast. i've got that an
5:38 pm
for all those making it big out there... ...shouldn't your mobile service be able to keep up with you? get wifi speeds up to a gig at home and on the go. introducing powerboost, only from xfinity mobile. now that's big. xfinity internet customers, cut your mobile bill in half vs. t-mobile, verizon, and at&t for your first year. plus, ask how to get the new samsung galaxy s25+ on us.
5:39 pm
that kind of flagged this for us. that's bay area assembly member marc berman speaking with our consumer investigator, chris kamara, at the state capitol. berman is taking action after our consumer team responded to heartbreaking complaints from local viewers. they lost thousands of dollars when a builder imploded. yeah, we've been tracking this story for a while now. let's bring in chris kamara. what's being done in sacramento chris. and then back here at home it statewide change raj and janelle we investigated what some call a multi-million dollar money grab. well now there's a move to turn the
5:40 pm
screws onncompetent or crooked contractors to protect you. it's devastating because first of all, you don't know if you can finish your project. in martinez, laura adu for her mom is finally taking shape two years later than expected, and about $40,000 over budget. everything. here is the contractor that took me on when anchor took my money and ran. anchored is anchored tiny homes, the business that many bay area homeowners tell us took big money 40,000 upfront, $80,000, but then failed to deliver. i just feel so cheated. customers say anchor did little work. or in steve sorenson's case, this is where it's supposed to be. no work at all. well, i mean, it's clear the law was broken. we started investigating. anchor tiny homes quickly closed its office and went belly up. the state contractor board recently revoked its license. this is
5:41 pm
accountability. this is, you know, one of many steps that we can take. but this is the biggest one that cslb can take. the company's former ceo boasted online that the builder was booming. i can tell you right now $100 million business. but now he and his co-founder brother have filed for bankruptcy. they told the court their customers money is gone and told me anchor was just a failed, mismanaged, growing business. their attorneys have declined to comment. customers are frustrated. it's a sense of absolute violation, of course. and a lawmaker is now watching. you know, i learned about it from your stories and really appreciate you doing that investigative reporting. and that's sometimes that's how we find out about things. that's mark berman, who represents the peninsula and part of san jose in the state assembly. an la area adu builder recently imploded two. so berman says california law needs new teeth. he's proposing a stiff new penalty for contractors who take too much money upfront or collect progress payments without actually making
5:42 pm
progress. so up to $10,000 per case, we want it to be a really severe penalty. if people violate this, that's righteous. you know, we should have that. you know, if people are out there trying to being predatory and taking advantage of homeowners who are trying to do the right thing. berman just filed a bill to add that new penalty to state law. he believes it should scare off bad guys and protect families like yours. we don't want to create that incentive for the fly by night sort of bad actors to say, oh, you know, here's an opportunity for a massive money grab. and then we can we can just disappear or go bankrupt. the proposed reform is too late for anchored tiny homes. customers like laura. i recognize i probably won't get my 40,000 is probably to the wind. she's encouraging berman's colleagues in the legislature to vote yes, and for governor newsom to sign the new contractor bill into law asap. without the law being changed, they have free reign. suzuki says she hopes the legislature also dramatically increases the bond contractors are required to
5:43 pm
carry. you know, licensed, bonded, insured. it's supposed to protect consumers like you. here's the thing. many anchored customers tell us they lost tens of thousands of dollars, but will only get a few dollars from the bond because it is divided up over so many customers. and that is a big problem because if you've lost a lot of money, well, you would expect that the state would have a protection in place to help pay you back. but that is not that's not happening right now at least. so that'll be version two hopefully of this story. the lawmaker taking action and fixing it for the rest of us. yeah. good job chris. thank you. all of you. thank you chris. vianey is here as we kick off. well, most people are working today or not working today, but when they go back to work in school tomorrow, you know, we're here. we got your back. you know, the good thing is, is the weather is nice. that means dry roads, because i think that's probably one of my most feared elements of the rain. right. and into the week ahead, we're even going to see a warm up. so i think that will be pleasant as a true
5:44 pm
california. you guys are all from california technically now, right? bring it on 70. how does that sound? i like that. yes. okay, great. we've got 70 on the map of rain chance. but it's going to depend on where you will be into the middle of the week. and we've even got additional sierra snow. you know, we've got tons of fresh powder out there. it was a lovely weekend to head up to the sierra and currently our temperatures here locally 50. so we've been comfortable. we've got some nice winds still in san francisco from the west at about 22mph. but aside from that, we've been dry. we've got a nice mix here of some clouds rolling through a couple of high clouds you can see on satellite, you know, inching into the overnight early morning hours. one thing you will notice yet again is going to be the possibility for some patchy fog tonight into tomorrow. we still have this one area right here around half moon bay, down to about four miles of visibility. everywhere else, we're doing okay on that evening commute. you should be fine heading into the overnight early morning hours. we do have our overnight lows dipping down into the 40s, so no 30s really expected, which is good news, though we don't have any frost advisories or freeze warnings.
5:45 pm
and this is kind of going to set us up for what's ahead into the afternoon as we get a ridge of high pressure that's going to keep our weather nice and fair. but look at the daytime highs expected for tomorrow. we're talking mid 60s on the map. san jose 65 degrees concord. i have you at 62. san francisco might even inch into that 60 category as well. and up through parts of mill valley we've got those low 60s. so what can we expect inching into tuesday and wednesday? tomorrow will be very similar to what we saw today, just 1 or 2 degrees warmer. but on wednesday this is what we've been monitoring right here. we've got this system. that cold front's going to kind of drop down into wednesday. notice though, the emphasis is a bit more to the north. however, if you live in areas north of the golden gate bridge, you likely will get some light shower activity in san francisco as well, stretching up through parts of santa rosa and maybe even around the coastline. but we're talking about less than a couple hundredths of an inch. however, depending on what happens in the south lake tahoe area inching into wednesday evening, we've got this cold front dipping down, and it does look like we'll get a bit of a wintry mix, so that could impact
5:46 pm
some travel conditions. inching into thursday and friday, we get a ridge of high pressure that once again keeps unice and dry. but also that's what's going to bring the warmth now as that cold front drops down on wednesday, we're not going to see majority of the impacts out of it, with the exception of some wind notice heading into tonight, we're going to stay relatively calm with the wind speeds. but as we inch kind of stretching ahead into that wednesday forecast, it does look like we'll see some wind picking up, especially for areas in the north bay. notice 22 plus mile per hour winds around san francisco. it's going to fall below that wind. advisory criteria, not expecting any gusts upwards of 40 or 50. and i mentioned sierra snow. and it does look like with that wintry mix we could get just a couple of inches of snow for some of those higher elevations inching into that kind of wednesday thursday forecast. again, this will be more for the higher peaks. and then here's what your 7-day forecast looks like right now. looking ahead again we're going to keep that rain chance in there mainly right now a lot of that seems to be pushing more north thursday and friday. this is when we get a good ridge of
5:47 pm
high pressure building in. that's what's going to set us up for a warm up. and by warm up i do mean about 10 to 15 degrees above average of where we typically are around this time of year. so it's going to give us a sneak peek of spring heading into next weekend. if you have any sort of outdoor plans on saturday and sunday coming up, the weather is going to be stunning, both inland areas and around the beautiful coastline. this is a lot of kids are off of school this week, so this is perfect weather for the week as well. that's right. yeah. thank you. nice. thanks. vianey up next, back to work in the sunshine. speaking of sunshine, the giants first full squad workout in arizona at spring training. we're going to check in with our giants insiders ttalk abouto s

scottsdale. yes, the giants. back to work. spring training has arrived. the giants still have some open roster spots or spots to be determined in that lineup. here's our giants insiders with the spring training battles. if we're going to stick with the theme of batteries, catchers would be the i guess the third topic to discuss here. kind of a interesting position, right, for the giants. obviously, joey bart no longer a giant. blake sabol no longer a giant. what is the current catching situation and do we have any tom murphy info? we do. tom murphy healthy. good. all right. first, we've heard, you know, he's healthy for the first time since last may.
5:51 pm
buster kind of came out and said, that's our backup catcher. like, and i think, you know, he's on the roster. he's got guaranteed money. he has a good track record of being a quality right handed hitter. i think they like the pairing there. you kind of mentioned dh earlier and how the giants i don't know. is it is it too uncouth to say the giants have not as an organization figured out this national national league dh thing? i mean, dh coming to all of major league baseball and we're just going to use it to stash like a backup guy or a rest day. i think you're right. i don't blame him for not wanting the everyday guy. like that's the whole point though, right? you get a big beefy dude who's on the tail end of his career. it's on the bench and hits dingers. if you have the right big beefy dude. i think what we saw last year is like when soler wasn't hitting. you're just kind of like, oh, this is. yeah, like, this is rough. and then you also feel like kind of invested in it and you feel like pot committed. and
5:52 pm
it's like, well, he has to hit fourth. he's our dh. like i think there were times last year with like conforto. and you know ramos wore down where bob melvin was like i really wish i could. i know there were times where he's like, i wish i could slide ramos over to dh for a couple days, and he just wasn't able to when sierra was there, you know, to your point, like that's you want the big beefy guy who hits dingers, like when you're sitting here and you know what you're facing in los angeles, los angeles with ohtani, you know, some of the other guys around the league who are going to be sliding into those spots. and you're kind of like hoping that herrera encarnacion's like baseball savant metrics jump off the page like the bat speed you saw last year, the expected numbers, the hard hit percentage. and you're hoping that will flores is the guy he was two years ago. like, yeah, there's some uncertainty. and i asked melvin who is dh is. and he went, that's like the one spot where i kind of go, i don't really know right now. there's a lot of questions out there and
5:53 pm
we'll get some answers. follow the giants all through spring training and of course during the season by downloading the giants talk podcast. well, longtime nba analyst and former hoops star charles barkley appears to be running back, his longtime beef with san francisco. we flip chuck, offering a big assist in the process. maybe you know it. in the past, he's taken a lot of verbal shots, usually playing around but criticizing san francisco about the city, the streets and the homeless crisis. barkley's previously referred to san francisco as rat infested and the armpit of america, but over the all star weekend, he changed his tune. it included spending part of saturday serving meals and volunteering at glide memorial in the tenderloin. that's not all. here's what he had to say about the church on tv. well, i spent the day at a homeless shelter. the people were amazing. it's called glide. they worked so hard over there. and i want to give them a lot of love and sunshine. and you know what? and not only that, i'm going to
5:54 pm
donate $250,000 to glide. that's a big chunk of change. he also met with mayor daniel lurie and now says he loves san francisco. barkley's donation comes after he admitted to actually liking the city during his broadcasts. i knew we could convince him. it's a beautiful city. still ahead. breaking his silence behind bars. luigi mangione, the man accused of killing a health care ceo, speaking for the first time since bng arrested. weiha dave's been very excited about saving big with the comcast business 5-year price lock guarantee. five years? -five years. and he's not alone. -high five. it's five years of reliable gig speed internet. five years of advanced securit. five years of a great rate that won't change. it's back. but only for a limited time. high five. five years? -nope. comcast business 5-year price lock guarantee. powering five years of savings.

with what's coming up next. okay. coming up at six, a new home listing is catching a lot of attention in the east bay. the price. are you ready? coming in under 400 grand. but what's the catch, exactly? also an alarming story in the south bay. a teenager stabbed to death at santana row. we have the latest developments. and a nationwide movement bringing thousands of protesters out on this president's day. their message not only for mr. trump, but for elon musk, too. the news at six starts right now. good evening. thanks for being with us on this president's day holiday. i'm raj mathai. and i'm jessica aguirre. we begin with a curious listing in the east bay. that listing is in berkeley and is likely something you haven't seen in the bay area for decades. maybe a home on the market for under $400,000. and if it sounds too good to be true, well, it probably is. arlena jones went to find out what the catch is.
6:00 pm
imagine a four bedroom, two bath, nearly 2000 square foot 1900s home in one of berkeley's most desired neighborhoods for just $400,000. so what's the catch? it's a risky investment, for sure. but it is a great location. the zillow listing holds nothing back. the house, located on a 4800 square foot lot, features a great location near the gourmet ghetto neighborhood. but that's where the perks stop. according to the listin the building has had no maintenance done since 1974. both the roof to the sunroom and the garage have collapsed. the home is leaning off the foundation. there's an active water leak that's been ongoing for a decade. and the home comes with an 83 year old tenant who will live rent free for the duration of his lifetime. that's the kind of property a small developer like me really likes. yeah. why? because that's opportunity. you know, it's too far g
