trump's administration sent out termination notices to hundreds of workers within the faa over the weekend. this comes as a lack of staffing was exposed within air traffic control towers following that recent washington, d.c, plane crash. nbc's thom jensen shows us none of the latest firings involve people in the towers, but many experts are still concerned. passengers and their families learned about the trump administration's faa firings as they grabbed their bags. given all of the plane crashes that i don't know much about it, but it seems like a bad idea and dropped off loved ones at san jose international airport this afternoon. as safe as possible. yeah, of course, 100%. yeah. more staff better. obviously, the president of the professional aviation specialists union said 300 members were given notices over the weekend. they include mechanics, information specialists and aviation safety assistants, among others. but air traffic controllers, who already face a nationwide shortage of more than 3000, have not been let go for short term.

there's probably going to very little impact, but eventually these roles have to be filled. aviation expert mike mccarron, who worked at sfo for more than 25 years, says the positions are still important. all these people, although they may not be talking to an aircraft every day, still play a very critical role in the air safety system of the united states. but doug rice, a veteran bay area airlines pilot with more than 50 years of flying experience, says it's not that big of a deal. these are not air traffic controllers. air safety inspectors or front line aviation maintenance specialists. rice says the workers might play critical roles someday, but these are new hires, not very many of them. considering the faa employs about 50,000 people. what we're looking at here is such a minuscule amount. a spokesman for the faa said on social media that the agency has retained employees who perform safety and critical functions. he also said the faa continues to hire air traffic controllers, mechanics and other support staff. we expect to learn a lot more about
