6:05 pm
during the weekends. they're looking in the evening and nighttime. now, the plan is still in the early stages and does need to be passed in sacramento first. a long standing bay area mall says it's time to get outside and get a makeover. the hillsdale mall in san mateo has some big plans. let's bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. you were at the hillsdale mall today. i love that place. i really enjoy it. and it's one of those still standing malls. raj. and they're trying to get better malls, as you know, disappearing all over the country as shoppers increasingly turn to their phones and laptops and go online shopping. but those that continue to thrive all seem to follow one key rule keep up with the changing times. and that's the plan in san mateo with the hillsdale mall. the shopping center, which recently opened up part of the mall to outside strolling now, aims to open up a lot more of it. it will soon submit plans to demolish the southern that is the enclosed part of the mall, and rebuild it with an open concept. you're seeing some of the artist's renderings here. it will include retail stores, office space,
6:06 pm
more than 1000 housing units, all things meant to modernize the modern mall experience. our goal is to, you know, create a new kind of urban neighborhood, urban village, if you will, that will, you know, have retail and office and residential, all in a mix of, of uses. okay. that seems to be, i guess, the trend here. i'm thinking stanford shopping center outdoors, santana row in the south bay, outdoors and with housing. is that where hillsdale is going? yeah. you see a lot of the outdoors think stanford, stanford, a lot of residences. think santana row, even commercial sort of bringing everything together. so you're not just dependent on shoppers. okay. and speaking of the shoppers, any reaction from people? i'm one of the shoppers there. i like that idea. yeah. and the people we talked to like it too. they have flocked to that north part. you get a lot of the outdoor area right there, very outdoor. so you can see a fountain, you can see restaurants. the apple store is
6:07 pm
there. it's all very open. and we saw a lot o families with kids. easier to do that outdoors, especially on a nice day than indoors. and they say, hey, more of this. we'll take it. okay. how long is this makeover going to take? is this a ten month project or a five year project? it could be a while. they've got to tear down that whole southern thing anywhere south of like, 31st street is going to be torn down and remade. the plans expected to go in front of the city council of san mateo around april or may, and then from there, if they get approved, this could take years. but, you know, they've got a pretty ambitious plan. so i don't know how long it's going to take, but they're going to get right to it. that's the plan. thank you scott, a lot of things going on there.et's move on now. in the new effort to bring flying cars to the bay area and across the country, there's a local company that's doing it. take a look. tonight on nightly news, an exclusive first look at the first commercial flying car. the san mateo based company behind the innovation. this test flight was in half moon bay. here's steve. here's steve patterson. hey, i'm nbc news correspondent steve patterson, and this is an

equipment, to preserve the data, to make sure that southern california edison doesn't manipulate that data, doesn't manipulate the physical evidence. and edison spokesperson is disputing the claim. they say that they did not notify attorneys that they would be, that they did notify attorneys that would be re-energizing the lines ahead of time. the judge delayed issuing the new temporary restraining order until next week. well, new cuts are coming to the entire california state university system, and it's because of declining enrollment. bay area based education data company edsource is reporting that system wide enrollment is almost 3% lower than it was a decade ago. to balance that decline, csu will now make cuts statewide. that includes campuses like san jose state, where enrollment is actually up. sjsu has already slashed $58 million from its budget over the past two years. and the university says more cuts will need to be made. we have not filled unfilled positions. we have cut back on sections of specific classes. we have eliminated some programs in

which there weren't a lot of students. other campuses have taken more drastic measures, including sonoma state, which, as we've been telling you, is shutting down its entire sports program to balance its budget. paul pelosi, husband of former house speaker nancy pelosi, is recovering after a kidney transplant. according to a statement from pelosi's office, paul pelosi received the kidney at ucsf last friday and is now home. the statement says the kidney was donated by the couple's daughter, jacqueline. mr. pelosi says he's endlessly grateful to his daughter and expressed his appreciation for his entire medical team at ucsf. let's take you outside now on this gorgeous tuesday evening across the bay area. a live look now at the golden gate bridge. it just never gets old. rob mayeda is here talking about our forecast. there could be some rain in the bay area right now, mostly for the morning and not a lot of rain, unlike what we had about a week ago. but there is the promise. if you've been waiting for spring like temperatures 70, we're going to

have that just around the corner starting as early as friday. but as raj mentioned, we do have some rain chances returning tonight. moving from north to south in time for your wednesday morning commute. let's take you outside right now. show you san francisco and san jose around the bay area. overcast skies starting off in san jose 58 degrees. mostly cloudy, no rain around san jose or to the east and northeast up towards the tri-valley, 59 degrees in dublin. we had highs today in the low 60s around the tri-valley, 57 currently in san rafael and you've got cloudy skies. no fog around san francisco at 55 degrees. let's show you lake tahoe 38 degrees. the snow there looks great, and the results from the sierra snowpack updated today. also looking pretty good. if you notice areas north of interstate 80. northern sierra 122% of average statewide average is at 96%. and once that snow melts, a lot of it feeds into the larger reservoirs in northern california. and the reservoirs right now are also in pretty good shape, 81% of capacity for
6:15 pm
the state's four largest. that includes trinity shasta, which is doing some releases. and you can see up towards oroville numbers there looking pretty good too. and new malone is important for east bay mud and our east bay water resources, as that is also a source of water as we head into summer. everything looking pretty good right now as far as where those stand now. the rain that's coming in, it's really not going to be reservoir filling rain, but it's going to wet the roads at times for your morning commute as we start the day off in the 40s. highs tomorrow will be a little bit warmer than today, going from the mid 50s around midday, then partly cloudy skies, mid 60s around san jose and close to 60 in san francisco for tomorrow. as we take a look at our storm ranger. a few sprinkles there near santa rosa. what will bring the rain still lurking here off shore? but watch how it essentially falls apart from 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, bringing that rain into the north bay. and then by 11:00 and noon, you see that rain line right there around the central bay, and then it kind of falls apart as we head towards the evening. rain totals expected t be generally less than a 10th of an inch of rain. some places may
6:16 pm
not get measurable rain. best chances, obviously region wide across the north bay. and that's going to be it in terms o rain chances as we wrap up the week. you see here high pressure building in heavy rain for the pacific northwest, but just to the north of the bay area. so as that high builds in, that's going to set the stage for these warming temperatures upper 60s to near 70 on friday. and for your weekend plans, it looks like low 70s around san jose on saturday mid 70s. and reach as we wrap up the weekend. should be a gorgeous one to get outside some overcast skies saturday and sunday after we get past this one period of some rain tomorrow, mostly morning to midday. heavy drizzle, a few showers that moves out for thursday and then spring weather awaits friday into the beginning of next week. those temperatures, by the way, look like they're going to be staying pretty warm for a while. even as we get out of next weekend, we are going to barbecue at your house or something. barbecue pool party sounds. sounds good to me. thanks, robbie. well, up next, the verdict announced

twist. the court says it doesn't want the mural there either. in fact, the administrators tell the san jose spotlight they asked the county to remove it four years ago, but can't do anything without the county's approval. the naacp says the 1960s painting needs to come down. no historical piece should be left up. that reminds another cultural ethnicity that they have been marginalized. we reached out to the county for comment, but did not receive an immediate response. the san jose spotlight reports the county told them their position is that it's an historical piece of art that cannot be painted over. however, the spotlight also says the county told them it would support covering the mural, but only if the court pays for it. new at six tonight after a three week trial, a verdict in the gun assault case against rapper asap rocky. the jury found the rapper, whose real name is rakim mayers, not guilty. an emotional moment, literally after that verdict, when he leaps over into the arms of loved ones as the verdict was read. it appears one of the people he's embracing is

a good investment. so eva began wiring money out of her accounts and buying gold bars and gold coins. $350,000 worth. $249,000 worth of gold and $123,000. she was instructed to hand over the gold to someone who met her in front of her forest hills apartment building, and they gave her this receipt saying treasury department. and she hasn't heard from those callers ever since. i used to tell me that, you know, because they know what such an amount. they kept asking me, was it a scam? and unfortunately, i had to say no because i was under surveillance, supposedly. and i was just scared. the gold bar scam is a type of fraud that convinces its victims to convert their money into gold for safekeeping. often, the scammers will impersonate government officials, like in this case, the treasury department and the federal trade commission. so that's the nypd. we asked the
6:24 pm
new york city police department about eva's experience, and they say there's a report for grand larceny. a department spokesperson tells us the victim wire transferred approximately $678,355 and put gold bars and coins in a box, which were picked up by an unknown individual. there are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing. the only income i get now is social security, and that doesn't go too far. and, you know, bills are piling up. and, you know, i can't eoy myself like i used to and really, you know, sad. thank you for reaching out to us. eva is still hoping her scammers will be found. in the meantime, she's hoping to warn others. that was linda bacarro reporting. now a reminder. if you run into a possible scam, our consumer investigator chris kamara wants to know about it. snap that qr code on the screen to fill out our consumer complaint form online. up next mindy kaling the latest to get a star. we're
