dei has really become, you know, this term that's been thrown around a lot and without actually exploring what dei means, understanding the climate surrounding dei. one insider believes companies can adjust to the moment ahead. why he believes consumers will listen. also, catholics around the world praying for the health of pope francis. an encouraging update this morning from the vatican. this is today in the bay. this is wednesday morning as well. right. it is. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. the team is all back together again. mike's going to have a look at that commute coming up in just a bit, but we want to start out with that forecast. it's been so nice kari over the last few days continuing today. yeah, it continues today. we do have to get through a few showers here and there, but other than that,
5:02 am
we'll go back to the sunshine by the afternoon. of course we have storm ranger powered up, tracking the very light and scattered showers that we're seeing mainly across the north bay. but we've also seen that rain making it elsewhere with some patches of light showers in the peninsula, as well as the east bay as you're heading out and about. temperatures in the upper 40s low 50s to start with a calm wind, and then once that rain clears out, mostly around noon, we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures about what we saw yesterday with some upper 50s and low 60s, and we will be warming up each day as we head into the weekend. so right now, mike, you're saying that the crews have cleared from the bay bridge? yeah, they had to restore the overnight road work. we didn't have that sunday or monday on the holiday, but last night we did the road. the traffic break happened at mid span and that cleared without an incident fully recovered across the bay bridge. no other major issues except for over here in the north bay. looking at santa rosa, the one i warned you about yesterday. and it will happen again tonight. overnight road work with a full closure at

hearn or yolanda on the other side, on the northbound side. and that should clear up right in the next few minutes. i'll track that, but so far, the locals know all about that. they've been well warned. the rest of the bay moving smoothly with green sensors. north bay city and south bay. back to you. thank you. mike. well, president trump is defending the mass firing of federal workers and the dismantling of federal government agencies, as well as rising power of elon musk. today in the bay's bob, adele joins us live this morning. and bob, in a new interview with fox news, the president also showed his firm support for musk. correct. good morning, laura marcus. president trump portrayed elon musk as the enforcer of his executive actions, as both of them appeared in an interview together with fox news sean hannity. the president said this, even though the white house just indicated in a court filing that musk is not running the department of government efficiency, or doge, which has been tasked with slashin the federal government. the president dismissed concerns that musk's businesses are a
5:04 am
conflict of interest with musk's work with the federal government. president trump also repeated the claim that musk's team is finding billions of dollars in fraud. you know, we have contracts that go forever and they've been going for years, and they're supposed to end in three months or five months or two years or something, and they go forever. so the guy is either crooked, you know, where he knew this was going to happen, or he's crooked because he's getting payments that he knows he shouldn't be getting. if the will of the president is not implemented and the president is representative of the people, that means the will of the people is not being implemented. many budget experts tell nbc news they are extremely skeptical. there are hundreds of billions of dollars in annual waste and fraud. a federal judge recently ruled musk's doge staffers can keep firing federal workers and accessing data systems, ruling 14 states who filed suit did not demonstrate
5:05 am
imminent harm. while acknowledging concerns over, quote, the unchecked authority of an unelected individual. another judge paused the firing of 11 intelligence officers who were temporarily assigned jobs on dei programs. the leader of the fda's food division resigned, saying the firing of 89 people effectively dismantled his group, tasked with keeping the country's food supply safe. and the department of agriculture is trying to rehire recently fired employees who were working on the bird flu outbreak, similar to efforts to reinstate some fired nuclear safety workers. also during the interview, trump said he would not touch social security, medicare or medicaid benefits. this comes as republicans seek to cut federal spending while enacting a roughly $5 trillion tax bill. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. now, president trump last month issued executive orders aimed at
5:06 am
curtailing diversity, equity and inclusion, or dei workplace initiatives. the white house is also giving schools and universities two weeks to eliminate diversity initiatives or risk losing federal money. and it's become a hot button topic. business strategists at the collective good believe conscious consumers are the key when it comes to businesses changing policies. that's because they're committed to supporting brands with values that align with their beliefs. rainbow really is this term that we're using to refer to companies that are quieting their dei initiatives. and it matters because, you know, we are in we live in a time of conscious consumerism where it's important that we know what companies stand for, that we the brands that we support, we want to know that they are, that they share the values, that we share. the collective good is encouraging businesses to be authentic to their brand and

larger vision, because consumers are taking note. meantime, president trump is seeking to stop california's plan to end gas powered car sales. according to the chronicle. legal experts say he's taking an end run approach to the state's law. starting in 2026, an increasing number of vehicles must be emissions free. that will expand to all vehicles sold in the state by 2035. the head of the environmental protection agency says he plans to ask congress to intervene to block california's efforts. the epa is also seeking regulations aimed at curbing truck emissions. pope francis remains in the hospital this morning, with the vatican confirming the pontiff is battling pneumonia in both lungs. but there is some encouraging news here. they say that he slept peacefully last night, waking up this morning and having breakfast. they also say that he's in good spirits. the pope first went into the hospital friday for bronchitis. tests later showed a respiratory tract infection. there's still no timetable for his release. happening today, school closures
5:08 am
will be front and center for leaders in two cash-strapped bay area districts. vallejo board members are looking at three closure options starting next fall. the short list of possible closures includes mare island academy and loma vista middle school. also today, santa rosa school leaders are expected to make a decision on closures. at least five schools are set to be on the chopping block. one high school, one middle school and three elementary schools. the district faces a $20 million deficit over the next twowo yea. our kris sanchez is looking deeper into what's at stake for each district. she'll have a full report in our next half hour. we're following new developments this morning. the moss landing battery facility has reignited a fire there. so the county of monterey is warning people in that area to close their windows and doors. alerts went out last night just before 9:00. now that smoke is seen from the vistra energy power plant. firefighters say that the new fire is in the same spot as the first, which sparked

last month. 70% of the facility was destroyed when that fire happened last month. there's no word on how this new fire started. and in the east bay, community members are expected to voice their concerns over the martinez refinery company at tonight's city council meeting. this is happening at 7:00 tonight. this comes as contra costa county leaders and the bay area air district are investigating the latest fire and recent flare ups at the refinery. at least six workers were hurt in that fire earlier this month. the investigation is ongoing to make sure that the refinery is in compliance with all regulations. 508 on wednesday morning, taking a peek outside of the golden gate bridge. not a lot of traffic to report, but i'm leaving that reporting to mike this morning. and we're leaving the weather to kari. just got to look at our forecast today. it's a little wet out there in some spots where you have to turn on the windshield wipers while you're driving, but then we are going to see rain chances before noon the rest of the day. we will be clearing out and it will be a warmer weekend. we're talking out temperatures in the 70s
5:10 am
for a lot of spots, and as we take a look at storm ranger right now, much of the rain that we've seen has been light, been very scattered, and it's been mainly over the north bay, although we are seeing some hit or miss showers over parts of the peninsula and extending over toward oakland, as well as contra costa county. as we start out right now, we're in the upper 40s in oakland. it is 51 degrees in martinez, while mostly in the upper 40s elsewhere, and we're all headed for the low to mid 60s for this afternoon. we'll talk about a spring-like weekend coming our way.ut before we get there, mike, you may have to fill up at the gas pump and those prices are going up. yeah, i pay a little more each day. we see we're back to having the best is in the south bay. the best in the bay. the samee price a yesterday, but now it's the best in the bay. 409 at world on story road and in the east bay, it's contra costa county with the best of 4.4 15. i'm sorry. now freedom gas on costa boulevard in san ramon, in the middle here and in solano county. the low is in vacaville. that's where the 419 is located at speedway express on south

some light rain moving through and rain chances continue before noon. we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds and cooler temperatures, but gradually warming up as we head for the low 60s this afternoon. we will have much warmer temperatures for the weekend, so we'll check that out coming up in a few minutes. and at the bay bridge toll plaza, everything looking clear. the camera was facing the opposite direction. just a few moments ago, i did see a disabled box truck that had been pulled over to the side. i think that's why the camera was turned. all is clear now. there's a box truck on the shoulder just before you get to the incline, and it doesn't appear to be causing any more slowing. we'll track this, of course, closely. well, good morning and very happy wednesday to you. we get the fed minutes later this morning. i doubt there are any surprises in there. we know the fed is resistant to lowering interest rates anytime soon. they're worried inflation is getting worse. s&p 500 hit a new record in tuesday's trading. apple is going to have an event today. we

expect they'll unveil a newer, cheaper iphone. not the latest greatest, but more affordable. tesla shares are up 40% since president trump took office. despite selling fewer cars, the tesla ceo, who seems to have far more power in washington than even the vice president, sat in on a fox news interview with president trump. trump, musk and sean hannity discussed doge, which is cutting federal spending all over, from faa to park rangers and musk's multi-billion-dollar contracts that depend on federal spending and the potential for a conflict of interest. i haven't asked the president for anything ever. and if it comes up, how will you handle it? well, he won't be involved. yeah, i'll i'll recuse myself if it is. if there's a conflict, he won't be involved. i mean, i wouldn't want that, and he won't want it. now, as several people have pointed out, it's incredibly obvious if the person in charge of deciding you have a conflict of interest is
5:17 am
you, that itself is a conflict of interest. on tuesday, president trump also floated the idea of a 25% tariff on foreign made cars. so a car that cost 50,000 would now cost 75,000. whether that includes mexico and canada, unclear because those should be protected by the new nafta. and a group of online influencers are suing services like honey that help you save money at the checkout. online honey is owned by paypal. the question is, who gets credit for the sale? those who sell online and sometimes get the affiliate commission when you buy the thing that they're talking about. or honey, if you have the honey plug in, honey swoops in last minute and gets the credit. and kentucky fried chicken is moving its headquarters from louisville, kentucky to texas. kfc is it's now known as part of the yum! brand of companies, along with pizza hut and taco bell. it's the same company. all right, i'm going to blow your mind. where was the first kentucky fried chicken? i would think louisville. yeah, salt

familiar with the host. this is the americasas. an extraordinary journey across earth's great supercontinent. how cool to have a recognizable voice, right? well, the americas is narrated by academy award winner tom hanks. over ten episodes, viewers will learn about some of the longest migrations on planet earth. triumphs and defeats, and some incredible survival strategies for animals, big and small. this morning, hanks talks with today's show's savannah guthrie about the remarkable footage. there's times where i cannot believe what i am looking at. there is not a moment of artificiality in it. nothing has been cgi. my whole thought process is, is that real? how did they get that shot? let me say, how long did they wait for that shot? well, there you go. you can watch hank's full interview at 7:00, right after today in the bay. and then this sunday at 7 p.m, the americas
5:20 am
premieres with the first two episodes on nbc bay area and also streaming on peacock. it always has magnificent photography. you know how they're able to get those animals. i always loved those types of shows. me too. yeah. very cool. yeah. yeah. there you have it. a different look at the forecast for you this morning. yeah. we want to get out in nature and, you know, maybe take our own photographs and try to capture what we can around the bay area. we are going to see some light showers moving through. and as we track it with storm ranger, this may affect the early commuters, but as we go throughout the day, rain chances go down and we're going to see the s sky clearing out. o as we take a look at the light and very hit or miss showers that we're seeing across parts of sonoma county, as well as in marin county moving over towards san francisco, as we are seeing some very light rain there and over richmond and rodeo, but we are seeing the waves of showers coming through. there is some more just to our north. a lot of that will pass and move just to
5:21 am
the east. so as we track it, hour by hour, by 8:00, the may be a little bit more of some of the heavier downpours moving into the north bay. but by the time it gets to santa rosa, approaching napa and san rafael, the rain is getting a lot lighter and it's not going to affect all of the bay area. as this system continues to weaken and then going into the afternoon, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures in the low 60s in san francisco, 64 in hayward, as well as san jose and 62 in dublin in livermore. tomorrow we see the temperatures start to rebound, so we're headed for the mid to upper 60s. and each day as we approach the weekend, it's going to go up a few more degrees. this is a look at friday, a high of 68 degrees in santa rosa, as well as palo alto and even low 70s for the south county. we compare our 60 and 70 to the arctic blast that's been affecting much of the country, and this air continues to head south. so today dallas is high temperature
5:22 am
will be 29 degrees. just brutal cold. and we've also seen a lot of progress here with our reservoirs that are now continuing to rise after all of last week's rain. also across the state we're doing pretty well, so we'll be keeping an eye on that. here's a look at the 7-day forecast. with things drying out after today a temperatures warming up heading into next week. mike, you're seeing our usual traffic flowing. yeah. typical pattern. the first to show any sense of change up here. highway 37 maher island, heading west over toward the racetrack and eventually in toward novato and the merge with 101, a smooth drive down the east shore freeway. maybe a little blips in richmond will start to pop up. there's one little sensor change. nothing major. no backup at the bay bridge just yet. we're looking at another ten, 15 minutes before those metering lights are activated. there's a little break tap here. 242 at the merge there and just went away. so now just a little build. no surprises through contra costa county out of the altamont pass. a steady, easy build at speed at the dublin interchange and the

morning to you. 530 right now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get you started with that forecast right now. meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect out there. i see storm ranger scanning the skies out there. this is our one chance of rain we have in quite a while, and it's not very impressive. we are seeing some scattered light showers moving through as we've been firing up storm ranger to track the rain and show you exactly where we are needing the windshield wipers as you're driving to work this morning. and it's not all of the north bay, but that's what we are seeing. a little bit more of that activity moving through. and we've also seen it off and on for san francisco, some light drizzle as well for parts of the east bay. as you're traveling on 680, you can see that activity just kind of moving around a little bit. there are some more widespread and heavy rain just to our north, but that will continue to stay to our north as it travels to the east. and for the bay area, we are going to
5:32 am
see one wave of showers between late morning and early afternoon, and the rest of the day is clear. in fact, the rest of the forecast is clear. mike, yo spotted some flashing lights in san jose? yeah. here are the lights of north 101. and here, very dim flashing lights. folks, take a look at this more closely on the shoulder. but it's an issue when you do see any activity on the shoulder. do give it a birth if you can. folks are shifting over a little bit at the offramp as you're traveling north, 101 just at 680. the arrow at the bottom of the screen, that's north 101 at hellyer. i told you i'd double check on the crash. chp says it's still blocking the slow lane, so do use caution. the volume still light throughout the south bay there. we're looking at the east bay where things should be picking up the volume. highway 37 now shows still steady slowing building up there off of mare island and highway four right above where it says concord. you see little yellow sensors starting to change from green. there may be an incident on the richmond bridge heading over to san rafael. we'll double check those reports from chp as well. the volume is building at the bay bridge, but no backup yet. back
5:33 am
to you. good to know. thanks, mike. 532. right n, san francisco is taking action, moving that city forward in the wake of the highest traffic death toll in nearly two decades. dozens of cameras are being installed throughout the city and will go online in march. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us at one of the intersections where those cameras are already installed. hey, ginger. good morning, marcus and laura. you mentioned they're going online in march, but we have actually already seen just this morning those cameras flashing when cars are going above the speed limit. i want to give you a look at that camera. that speed camera is installed going westbound on geary and seventh. that's the intersection where we are this morning. now, we saw two cars drive past the intersection, which above the 25 mile per hour speed limit here in this neighborhood. those sensors are triggered when cars go at least 11 miles over the speed limit. now, san francisco will be the
5:34 am
first inhe state to enact these speed cameras, or to impose penalties with the speed cameras under a new law. other cameras are also scattered across other busy streets in the city. some are close to schools or on streets with a documented history of sideshows. now, once these cameras are activated, notices for violators will go out in the first two months. but after 60 days, that is when the fines will kick in. and here are the fines. 1 11 to 15 miles over the speed limit will be $50. now going 16 to 25 miles over will cost you $100. anything above 26mph will amount to a $200 penalty. those penalties can reach $500. ashby. 645 became law last year, making california the 19th state in the country to allow the use o of speed camera. they will be triggered by cars
5:35 am
going more than 11mph over the posted speed limit. in this case, it's 25mph here in the richmond district. these fines are civil penalties and not moving violations, which means will not count as points against someone's driver's license. now, san francisco says it's doing its part to inform drivers of what's coming. we want everyone to know exactly where these cameras are, exactly how the program works so that they can change their behavior and just slow down. that's that's really what we want. now, there are other places, as mentioned in the country who already have these speed cameras. data from those states, including new york, suggest that these strongly work. we're going to keep our eye out on some of these cars. you can see are driving, driving somewhat quickly on geary street this morning. again, they're not necessarily online, but we are seeing them in practice here. marcus and laura, it'll be interesting to see how this really rolls out and if this is what the city needs to keep
5:36 am
drivers or to push drivers to slow down in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay lived in city where they've had them before. they work, they do. i feel like those drivers behind you need to know the story you're working on today. all right. thanks so much, ginger. well, happening today, leaders in two struggling school districts appear poised to vote on a wave of campus closures. and in each case, they're grappling with the same issues that we're seeing in many other bay area school districts. yeah, but that's hardly easing the anxiety for families now in limbo. today in the bay's kris sanchez in our newsroom this morning. and kris, these are two large school districts now downsizing. right. and they are dealing, as you said, with the same issues a lot of california districts are, which is declining enrollment, which means less funding. now, the two different school districts have differing plans. but no doubt the families in vallejo and santa rosa are feeling the same emotions. and hundreds of them have been showing up at meetings to be heard. let's start in vallejo here, where tonight trustees will vote on three
5:37 am
options one. closing mare island health and fitness academy and moving vallejo charter school into that space. the second option is to reconfigure loma vista environmental science academy, moving students in sixth through eighth grade to solano widenmann and turning loma vista into a k through fifth grade school. the third option would close loma vista altogether, except for the farm. now, the board moved that meeting to mare island academy, as they expect a very large attendance this evening. that is on rickover street in vallejo, and it starts at 6:00 this evening. you can catch it also on the district's youtube page if you cannot attend in person. but get there early if you want to see how you can see how many people showed up at a similar meeting in santa rosa. this is where trustees have been working for months on the plan that they will vote on tonight, which they call a331 because it comes in three phases in year one, brook hill and albert elementary schools would close along with
5:38 am
hilliard and santa rosa middle schools. piner a santa rosa highchools will become campuses for seventh through 12th graders. you're merging middle and high schoolers cesar chavez and santa rosa. french american charter schools move into those empty buildings in year two, steel lane elementary school and elsie allen high school closed in year three. rincon valley middle school is absorbed by maria carrillo high school, again putting middle schoolers and high schoolers together. now, santa rosa trustees will meet at 6:00 tonight. as always, the public is welcome to attend. but again, you want to get there early if you want to see. they have moved it, though, from the trustees building to santa rosa city hall, because they want to be able to accommodate the hundreds of people that they expect. that's at 6:00 tonight, laura. all right. we'll continue to follow that. thank you. kris three of the leading mayoral candidates seeking to win oakland's special election are giving getting voters a better idea of their visions for the
5:39 am
city. long-time former congresswoman barbara lee, former council member lauren taylor and sheng thao former chief of staff randy webb all took part in a forum last night in downtown oakland. they are among ten candidates seeking to win the mayor's seat vacated by sheng thao after voters recalled her. each candidate talked about the key issues they believe need more attention. this is my home and i love this city, so why not? barbara lee, who has this experience to bring to bear now, who can bring resources and shine a positive light on oakland even with our challenges? one thing that's the same is the same issues, the same problems that oakland faced before they still exist. the same reasons i ran. the only thing is, they've gotten worse. i've already had a meeting with our police chief and let him know that by 2028, i want 900 officers on boots on the ground in oakland. lee served in congress for nearly three decades. taylor narrowly lost
5:40 am
