some sunshine. so we'll be watching that and looking at the warm up in our forecast. we'll talk about it in a few minutes. mike, you have an alert now in the south bay. yeah. the earlier crash we talked about folks on northbound 85 is still actually going on. and instead of blocking just two lanes, we hear that all lanes may be blocked temporarily. traffic reportedly may have to be escorted off the freeway at evelyn avenue on north 85. really unexpectedly slow as you head into mountain view and sunnyvale or i'm sorry, shoreline might get you past the scene. and moffett, if you're getting toward 101, just watch those surface streets for some additional traffic. meanwhile, the regular bill through san jose also kind of kicking in and easing up for san jose. so that's better news overall and a light build at the bay bridge. but it's still there. back to you. it's still there. thanks, mike. well, president trump defending the mass firing of federal workers and the dismantling of federal government agencies, as well as rising power of elon musk. today in the bay's bombadil joins us live this morning. and bob, in a new interview with fox news, the president also showed his firm support for musk. he did. good

morning to marcus and laura. president trump portrayed elon musk as the executor, the enforcer of his executive actions. this on an interview a joint interview with fox news sean hannity. this even though the white house indicated in court filings that musk is not running the department of government efficiency, also known as doge, which has been tasked with slashing the federal government. the president dismissed concerns that musk's businesses, his private businesses, are a conflict of interest with his work with the federal government. president trump also repeated the claim that musk's team is finding billions of dollars in fraud. you know, we have contracts that go forever, and they've been going for years, and they're supposed to end in three months or five months or two years or something, and they go forever. so the guy is either crooked, you know, where he knew this was going to happen, or he's crooked because he's getting payments that he knows he shouldn't be getting. if the will of the

president is not implented in the president is representative of the people, that means the will of the people is not being implemented. many budget experts tell nbc news they are extremely skeptical. there are hundreds of billions of dollars in annual waste and fraud in the federal government. a federal judge recently ruled musk's doge staffers can keep firing federal workers and accessing data systems, ruling 14 states who filed suit did not demonstrate imminent harm while acknowledging concerns over, quote, the unchecked authority of an unelected individual. another judge judge paused the firings of 11 intelligence officers who were temporarily assigned jobs on dei programs. the leader of the fda's food divisi resigned, saying the firing of 89 people effectively dismantled his group, tasked with keeping the country's food supply safe. and the department of agriculture is trying to rehire recently fired employees

hospital this morning, with the vatican confirming the pontiff is battling pneumonia in both lungs. but there is some encouraging news. they say he slept peacefully last night, waking up this morning having breakfast. they also say he's in good spirits. the pope first went to the hospital friday for bronchitis. tests later showed a respiratory tract infection. still no timetable for his release. we're following new developments this morning out of the moss landing battery facility. and the fire there has reignited. the county of monterey is warning people in that area to close their windows and doors. alerts went out last night just before nine. that smoke seen from the vistra energy power plant. firefighters say that the new fire is in the same spot as the first, which sparked last month. 70% of the facility was destroyed in the fire last month. there's no word on how this new fire started. now, in the east bay, community members are expected to voice their concerns over the martinez refinery company at tonight's city council meeting. that's
6:07 am
going to happen at 7:00. now, this comes as contra costa county leaders and the bay area district are investigating the latest fire there and the recent flare ups at the refinery. now, at least six workers were hurt in that fire earlier this month. the investigation is ongoing and making sure that the refinery is in compliance with all regulations. happening today, school closures will be front and center for leaders in two cash-strapped bay area districts. vallejo board members are looking at three closure options starting next fall. the short list of possible closures includes mare island, loma vista middle school. also today, santa rosa school leaders are expected to make a decision on closures. at least five schools are said to be on the chopping block. one high school, one middle school and three elementary schools. the district faces a $20 million deficit over the next two years. our kris sanchez is looking deeper into what's at stake for each district. she'll join us with a full report in our next half hour. also today, a new development opens in oakland

much of the tri-valley. so in dublin you're at 47 degrees now, a mix of sun and clouds throughout the morning and then going into the afternoon. we'll see things clearing out later today, but the rain will be affecting san francisco, as well as some southern parts of the north bay as we go into late morning, so i'll be watching that for y. mike's been looking around to try to save you some money at the gas pump. yeah. we're trying. so i'll give you the best we've found, which is not as good as last week or the week before. we're back to having the best in the south bay. same price as yesterday, but now it's the best because other prices have come up. 409 leads the list here at world on story road again in san jose in the east bay, it's contra costa county with the best of 415. that's in san ramon. freedom gas on all costa boulevard and in solano county. the low is in vacaville. that would be 419 at speedway express on south orchard avenue. you can check your prices and the changes. you'll probably find gasbuddy.com on the roadway. we find no change in the south bay

ju yet. that's where the problem spot is. northbound 85 at belen. folks are being escorted off the freeway crash blocking three lanes. there are only three there. the offramp will take you down to surface street. you can use moffett or shoreline to get to 101 if that's where you're going. do note that it starts about el camino. that will be a congestion point coming into mountain view. meanwhile, another congestion point, vasco road, just jumped up to about a half hour over the last couple of minutes. more congestion out of contra costa county down toward 580, which is moving smoothly, and the bay bridge actually showing a mild backup here. but it is still building right on a typical pattern center first. back to you. thanks, mike. 610 right now the north bay could be going green. coming up next on today in the bay, the new push to open dispensaries for the first time ever in one bay area county. plus, texas is famous for all kinds of things. all of mike's exes and barbecue as well. but fried chicken? we're not so sure. we'll take a look coming up. and we have to tell you

let's head to hayward with a look at the morning temperature trend. it's 48 degrees now and all clear. and as we go throughout the morning, clouds start to move in and there may be some spotty showers around 1:00 today as we make it into the low 60s for this afternoon. this is our only chance of rain. we'll talk about some spring like weekend temperatures coming up, and we are looking at san jose, where the earlier disabled vehicle on the shoulder has cleared. it was dimly lit. i was concerned about that. the headlights moving smoothly through san jose. it's sunnyvale and mountain view where highway 85 is a problem. an earlier crash now updated to major injuries. this may be a while till they can clear north 85. we'll track the slowing in the ripple effect through the south bay. coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. we get the fed minutes today. i doubt there are any surprises. we know the fed is resistant to lowering interest rates. they won't any time soon. they're worried inflation is getting worse. s&p 500 hit a new record in tuesday's trading.

apple is going to have an event where they are going to unveil a newer, cheaper iphone. not the latest greatest, just more affordable. tesla shares up 40% since president trump took office despite actually selling fewer cars. the tesla ceo, who says he's in charge of cutting federal spending, sat in on a fox news interview with president trump last night. one of the topics elon musk's multi-billion dollar contracts, which depend on that same federal spending and the potential of a conflict of interest. haven't asked the president for anything ever. and if it comes up, how will you handle it? well, he won't be involved. yeah, i'll i'll recuse myself if it is. if there's a conflict, he won't be involved. i mean, i wouldn't want that, and he won't want it. now, as several people have pointed out, and is incredibly obvious, if the person in charge of deciding whether you have a conflict of interest is you, then that

itself is a conflict of interest. on tuesday, president trump also floated the idea of a 25% tariff on foreign made cars. so a car that costs 50,000 will now cost 75,000, whether that included mexico or canada. unclear, because those should be protected by the new nafta. a group of online influencers suing services like honey that help you save money at the checkout. online honey is owned by paypal. the question is who gets credit for the sale? those who sell online sometimes get an affiliate commission. when you buy the thing that the influencer is talking about. but if you have the honey plugin installed, honey sweeps in last minute and gets the credit. and kentucky fried chicken is moving its headquarters from louisville, kentucky to texas. plano, texas. kfc is known now is part of the yum brand of companies, along with pizza hut and taco bell. it is the same

6:20 am
exactly. so look forward to that. this weekend. on sunday night. right here. there we go. all right. we're looking forward to this forecast. we've been you know, mother nature has been doing us well. yeah, i think so. we got some rain last week. we are getting a break this week. with the exception of some very light and quick moving showers. but as we go toward the next few days, it's going to be warming up. let's check it out with storm ranger. that's our mobile doppler radar. the red scan that you're seeing there, and it is picking up on some rain starting to make its way into the north bay once again. we've had some light showers already, just kind of misting and drizzling a little bit for a while. as we get a closer look. we're also seeing some rain in san francisco, but it's not a huge change or not having a big impact on your morning heading out the door. we are seeing some heavier rain to the north. that's going to quickly sweep through the bay area over the next few hours, and take a look at the sky this morning before that rain moves in. we are seeing some clouds over san jose. it's 50 degrees right now
6:21 am
and we are going to see some cool temperatures throughout the morning into the early afternoon. we make it into the low 60s, and the timeline of that rain brings it into santa rosa and calistoga at 9:00. and as you can tell, it's not really all that intense as it moves into san francisco and oakland around 11:00, we are seeing the activity just kind of breaking up, and we may not see much of anything in san jose. while there will be a slight chance of rain in parts of the east bay. our temperatures today basically back to what we saw yesterday. we are going to be warming up each day as we go toward the end of the week. so tomorrow in san francisco, we're looking at a high of 64 with a lot of sunshine. it will be in the upper 60s for napa and 68 degrees for concord as well. by friday, we could see some parts of the bay area making it to 71 degrees. we'll see that in san martin and gilroy and upper 60s for much of the rest of the bay area. we've been talking about a warm up, but the rest of the
6:22 am
country is in a deep freeze just to our east. so salt lake city is kind of that edge where we're seeing the milder temperatures. but then that arctic air is plunging as far south as texas, with the high in dallas staying below freezing today. and we're also going to see that cold air working its way to the east. after all the rain that we had last week, our reservoirs are doing pretty well. we've seen them come up significantly, mainly in the south bay, and we know the reservoir was only at about 40 something percent of capacity. but now we're almost back to normal after all of that rain. and across the state we're doing pretty well on average, about 81% of total capacity. so that's some great news there as we are going into some drier weather for the rest of the week, as well as the weekend, we're going to see temperatures warming up with the warmest day on sunday up to 73 degrees. now, mike, you have a major injury crash in mountain view. yeah, that's the unfortunate detail that came in ki for north 85 approaching evelyn avenue. we
6:23 am
also had read sensors earlier. that means traffic was stopped up. everyone was forced off at evelyn. this may have changed in the last couple of minutes, because i just saw it go from red to yellow to green in about the span of three minutes, so we may have traffic restored. may north 85 approaching evelyn avenue. three vehicles were involved. major injuries were reported. transported to hospital for those injured to the appropriate facilities. we're watching that. meanwhile, back here in san jose, we're just starting to see that second slowing, and that would be the one that sticks around for the commute a little bit for 680 and 880 traditional south of 580 through the tri-valley and the east bay. back to you. thank you mike. 623 right now, next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds a new breed of business is aiming to help you steer clear of incompetent or crooked construction contractors. i'm consumer investigator. kris.

francisco, with the new steps being taken in hopes of getting drivers to hit the brakes. plus, crunch time for schools facing closures. leaders in two north bay districts appear ready to make some tough decisions. we break down the current proposals and potential impact for anxious famili. this is today in the bay. 630 on your wednesday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at that forecast for you ts morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temps and the chance of rain in some spots across the bay area. yeah, the rain is going to be moving through over the next few hours and then clearing out for the afternoon. it's been pretty hit or miss. so as we take a closer look at with storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. you can also get this at home on the nbc bay area app, so that you can actually plan your day and get alerts if there is some rain approaching your location. but it's been very spotty so far. just enough to turn on the windshield wipers. and then it's moving on. but there will be one
6:32 am
more wave of that rain moving in from the north bay and making its way across the rest of the bay area as it weakens and becomes a lot more scattered. we are going to see some spots, seeing some rain, but not all of us. so i'll be tracking that. and mike, you're seeing the bay bridge toll plaza filling up. yeah, we have just a few lanes over on the right approach that are still not full. so that's great news over there. a smooth drive getting to the area through the maze i've circled at the top west 80 around el portal. there have been a couple of crashes. we were wondering why there was slowing. then a couple showed up on the grid. there may be one lane blocked. that's a congestion point. and also look at walnut creek interchange just over to the right side. south 680 and west 24 had some slowing starting to clear there. eight 8680 typical pattern heading south. and we still have the crash north 85 at avalon. there's a little slowing there. it's still on the grid, but no detail on what lanes are blocked. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, san francisco is taking action, moving the city forward in the wake of the highest traffic death toll in nearly two

decades. dozens of cameras are being installed throughout the city and will go online in march. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live over at one of those intersections where those cameras already installed out there. ginger. they are installed. they're not yet online, marcus and laura. but we have been seeing these cameras or these sensors at least flashing throughout the morning. i'm gonna step out of the way so you can see how it works. if any of these cars driving by happen to go above the speed limit. we're on geary and seventh this morning, where those sensors have gone off at least a dozen times while we've been here. if you are going above the speed limit, they'll pick up on that. the lights will flash and the back license plate will be captured. now, this will be one of 33 cameras across the city that will pick up on speeding. other cameras are scattered across other busy thoroughfares in the city. some are close to schools or on streets with a documented history of sidesho. now, once cameras are activated,
6:34 am
notices for violators will go out in the first two months. after 60 days, that is when the fines will kick in. so here are the fines. 11 to 15mph over the speed limit will cost $50. going over 16 to 16 to 25mph, i should say, will cost you $100, and anything above 26mph will amount to a $200 penalty. it can even go up to $500. ashby. 645 became law last year, making california the 19th state in the country to allow the use of these speed cameras, which will be triggered by cars going more than 11 miles over 11mph over the posted speed limit. these fines are civil penalties, not moving violations, which means it won't count against your driver's license. san francisco says it's doing its part to inform drivers of what's coming. we want everyone to know exactly where these cameras are, exactly how
6:35 am
the program works so that they can change their behavior and just slow down. that's that's really what we want. so in this neighborhood where where we are the richmond, the speed limit is 25mph. so some of these cars that are going by kind of just the normal flash, the normal flow of traffic, you'll see that flash. it's going off right there. it's capturing the back license plate of those cars. but again those these cameras are not yet online. we're seeing how they will work come march once they are activated. but this seems to be a real game changer as far as enforcing speed limits on city streets. marcus and laura, back to you. yeah, we saw that flash once. yeah, let's hope it makes a difference when they're up and running. thanks so much, ginger. yeah. well, in the north bay, two school districts will vote on school funding plans, which could mean closures and mergers. santa rosa city school district needs to close a $20 million budget gap. and in vallejo, the budget gap could be $13 million by next
6:36 am
year. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us from our newsroom this morning. kris, what are the plans for vallejo and santa rosa actually look like? well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. they're dealing with similar issues declining enrollment, smaller budgets and the end of pandemic era funding. but the two districts have differing plans. still, families both in vallejo and santa rosa are feeling the same emotions, and hundreds of them have been showing up to be heard at those meetings. let's start in vallejo tonight. trustees will vote on three options one closing mare island health and fitness academy and moving vallejo charter school into that space. the second option is to reconfigure loma vista environmental science academy, moving students in sixth through eighth grade to solano deadmon and turning loma vista into a k through fifth grade school. the third option would close loma vista altogether, except for the farm. the board moved the meeting to mare island academy so that they can accommodate what they expect will be a large crowd that is on
6:37 am
rickover street in vallejo and starts at six this evening. you can catch it on the district's youtube page. if you can't attend in person, you can see how many people showed up at a similar meeting in santa rosa. trustees there have been working for months on the plan they will vote on tonight, which they call a331 because it comes in three phases. in year one, brook hill and albert elementary schools would close along with hilliard and santa rosa middle schools. piner and santa rosa high schools will become campuses for seventh through 12th graders. so that's a lot of kids in a different age range. santa cesar chavez and santa rosa french american charter schools move into those empty campus buildings. now in year two, steel lane academy and elsie allen high schools closed in year three. rincon valley middle school is absorbed by maria carrillo high school, now santa rosa trustees will hold the meeting at santa rosa city hall, which can accommodate 500
6:38 am
people. that starts at six this evening. you can also catch that one on youtube for the district's page, both in santa rosa and vallejo. get there early if you want to see the changes. by the way, for both vallejo and santa rosa, whatever they vote on tonight would take effect the very next school year, starting in the fall. marcus. all right. chris. thank you. well, you may want to expect backups today in the alameda county courts. that's because workers are staging a one day strike. want to give you a live look outside of hayward hall of justice? this is where workers are starting to gather. the service workers union is promising to picket outside criminal, civil and juvenile courts countywide, citing issues with staffing and inadequate training. the union also says it is now working with an expired contract, and leaders believe that today's strike will stop or even delay trials systemwide. alameda county has not issued a comment at this time. new at 6:00, leaders in napa county are taking a new step to fix the damage from recent storms.
6:39 am
supervisors have approved a local emergency, allocating nearly $10 million to cover road repairs, most of which happened during the storm that rolled through february 4th. the county will also try to recoup at least some of that money from the state and federal government. now, let's take a live look for you outside across the bay area. the sun beginning to rise, the skyline looking beautiful out there in all parts of the bay area. we are tracking some rain out there. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that storm. ranger been busy this morning. yeah, we are already seeing some of the light rain moving into northern sonoma county, raining up around ukiah and as well for lake and mendocino counties. waking up to some wet weather as we get a closer look at what to expect today. once that rain moves from north to south. it turns breezy, but we'll also clear out and looking ahead to some warmer temperatures and kind of feeling like spring this weekend in brentwood, you may not see much of that rain, so we're going to see the clouds at times with the sun peeking out and temperatures going from mid
6:40 am
