democracy for decades, and over that time, there has been serious erosion in the mid 80s. more than 6 in 10 americans were satisfied with democracy. this year, it's about half that. the leaders of gallup and the kettering foundation's new survey, called democracy for all, will try to get to the bottom of what democracy even means anymore, especially when some americans feel their voices are ignored. we need to understand who is feeling left out. there's a lot of americans out there that think they're just not valued or respected or taken seriously in this country. we want to ask a different set of questions that, that, that get at. how included do people feel in democracy? is my is my voice heard and does it matter? am i treated fairly? researchers are hoping to cut through the topics, leaving americans most deeply divided, including racial and ethnic diversity, religion and social change. they expect their findings to be released this fall. well, gas prices

continue to creep upward in the bay area, now averaging about $0.50 per gallon more than one month ago. maybe you noticed that at the gas pump. regular unleaded in most cases. now back above $5 per gallon. experts cite several factors, including the refinery recently fire there in martinez, which created supply issues. but as mike has been telling us, refineries are now transitioning to their summer blend and that usually results in those prices going higher. 507 right now. today marks eight years since the last major flood in san jose. the 2017 flood did more than $100 million in damage. it also triggered a new flood control project that hit a major milestone. valley water says crews have now finished building 80 500ft of flood wall along low lying areas of coyote creek. the area near william street park was hit hard during that flood. valley water says if the same storm surge hit the area now,

the neighborhood would be protected. i'm pleased that they've finally done something to prevent this from happening again. it looks a lot nicer than i thought it would. so pleased about that. the flood wall is ten feet high. valley water says it will now try to get $50 million from fema to complete a second phase, which would involve building a similar wall along parts of the creek between tully and montague. boy, was that something to remember. okay, it's 508. let's make some new memories. maybe this weekend. hoping for some great weather as we take a live look outside of downtown san jose. today should be nice. yes, it will be nice. we are seeing all clear conditions across the region. all of the clouds and the rain heading up toward the pacific northwest and staying north of the bay area for the weekend. so we areoing to be warming up this afternoon and mostly sunny for the weekend as those temperatures head for the upper 60s and low 70. we're even staying dry for most of next week. we may have a couple of
5:10 am
very spotty showers in the north bay, but other than that, it looks great and temperatures up to 68 degrees today in oakland, as well as hayward and 69 today in san martin. so we'll talk about the weekend coming up. you might have to fill up. so, mike, where are we saving a few coins? it's a little more pricey overall. as marcus talked about me talking about i'll talk about it again. we're switching toward the summer blend, so that changeover means more expensive gas is filling the tanks at the gas station to fill your tank. more expensive. we still have the best in san jose, but just one spot has this bargain at 409. world on story road continues to be the best in san jose. other prices throughout the city higher. the next best is contra costa county, holding steady in san ramon for 15 at freedom gas on acosta boulevard, and finally considerably higher for the north bay low in marin county, we have 449 in mill valley, the arco on redwood highway. you check your areas. hopefully it's better than 449, but that will be gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we're looking at

the sun just kind of peeking out from behind the clouds as we go throughout the morning into the afternoon and temperatures back to what we saw yesterday. so really nice. we'll get a look ahead to the weekend coming up. and live. look at fremont. same freeway 880 northbound with those tail lights past our camera. heading up toward auto mall parkway, where the on ramp does have a crash. maybe on the shoulder of the onramp is still open and traffic on the freeway moving at speed. we'll check the north bay, where we typically see slowing coming up in the next couple of minutes. good morning. happy friday. a sell off on the markets on thursday largely because of walmart. and we brought you that news ahead of the opening bell yesterday that walmart was predicting slower sales as the american consumer grows mor and more uneasy about the economy. meta, the parent company of facebook, has filed financial papers showing it wants to give executives big bonuses as much as 200% of their salaries. now, you'll remember this comes right after facebook announced it was

okay? this is a subject i'm sure a lot of parents don't want to talk about. because you know what? nothing like stirring up a little drama ahead of the weekend, right? okay, so there's a new finding that indicates, despite what parents tell you, that most likely they have a favorite child. this is according to a recent study published by the american psychological association. researchers find parents pick a favorite child. it could be based on a variety of factors that includes their birth order, gender, or their personality. the study also finds younger siblings generally get a little more favorable treatment. there's the whole middle child thing, you know? maher. yeah, poor jan brady at our house we have this time it's called tribute. and when the kids come and they lay things out in front of us and i decide which i like. oh no kidding. i'm kidding, i'm kidding. this one. do you all find it? i mean, you all have kids. do you all find this somewhat true? you know what i

do? i whisper to each of them separately. you're my favorite. and it's interesting to see them, you know. but then they'll look at each other like, hey, did she tell you i have a favorite girl and a favorite boy? oh, yeah. same at our house. we do the same thing. yes, yes. laura can't quite do that. yeah, exactly. at times. vary you 100% for sure. i am my mother's favorite child. oh, yeah. oholone chiles. which of ouour kids is your. well, you cn tell us later. that would be interesting. let's talk about the weather. i mean, always a great way to change the subject. and it's going to be nice and sunny. this weekend. we'll be taking our children outside, enjoying some more of the warmer weather. and in the mid 40s. right now, as you're heading out in palo alto, it's 46 in san francisco. and it's also a cool start for san jose at 42. and as we take a look at our hour by hour temperatures, so we all start out cool with some 40s and then seeing it warming up into the 50s, even some low 60s at lunchtime. it's going to be the
5:22 am
warmest in the south bay with morgan hill and san jose, as well as gilroy in the mid 60s, while san francisco is in the upper 50s, will be at 62 in san rafael. and then going into later today, we see the top of those temperatures making it into the upper 60s for a lot of us and even a few low 70s. let's check out morgan hill and look out ten days. so we're going to see some very mild weather for saturday and sunday sunshine, cool mornings and some nice afternoons. looking ahead to next week. still no rain, at least not a really high chance. so we're going to see temperatures warming up into the mid 70s. peaking on wednesday and still looking pretty warm for the end of next week, but looking way ahead in terms of rain chances, it's going to be dry for us. although the rain gets very close to the north bay, there's that slight chance between sunday night and monday morning still not having a big impact on any plans to get outside. and throughout much of
5:23 am
next week, all of the storm systems stay either to our north or to our south. so looking at our 7-day forecast, we are going to see that increase in cloud cover sunday night into monday morning. and then we'll see temperatures heading back to the 70s throughout much of next week in san francisco. we'll each day see the weather on repeat with a mix of sun and clouds there as well. mike. it's a nice drive across the bay bridge. it is, and it's a beautiful view of that beautiful drive across in toward the city. look good spacing, light volume of traffic on the bay bridge and no backup, no metering lights at the toll plaza. not even anything but green sensors here. oh, there's one yellow sensor just starting a little bit of slowing, emphasizing how light it is on a friday. no delays through contra costa county highway four still holding at speed. walnut creek and south 680 heading down toward pleasanton and sunol earlier crash still on the grid. the on ramp at altamont parkway to north 880. that's the only issue on the grid itself. good stuff so far. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 523 for

seat, some buyers may be pumping the brakes on purchasing a new car today in the bay's kris sanchez. live for us this morning from the auto show with an outlook. and kris, hopefully you can find me something nice. oh, marcus, i have some beautiful luxury cars here that maybe you can save your pennies for. i know you're a homeowner, so you know, things are. you know, you have to be considerate. there are lots of different vehicles here. there. the high end vehicles. and there are budget friendly vehicles. there are also a lot of family friendly ones. but with all of the unease about the economy, we have to wonder if this is going to translate into buying power. i want to show you some data here. according to a pew research poll, 25% of americans said that the economy is in good shape and only 40% say that they expect improvement. and so we want to ask brian moody from autotrader. kelley, book executive editor here. what do you make of this unease? well, i think people are responding to prices, right? when prices go up, people say like, oh, that
5:37 am
seems troubling. and that's not with cars. that's not always a one for one. there's also the financing. there's different options. so cars you can usually manage it, other things such as food and that kind of stuff that's different. you might just be more expensive and that's that. so there is a big elephant in the room. earlier this week, president trump said that he wanted to slap a 25% tariff on all vehicles. what is that going to mean and do we need as folks are walking through those doors, what does that mean for them? right. so if that were to go through, one of the things is that like this country and this continent really has spent a couple of decades building a distribution system between us and mexico and canada so it could raise prices? the thing that would really be troubling is that a lot of cars that you don't think are built outside the us actually are, and even if they aren't, the parts that go into them are. right. so it's very interconnected. interest rates we expect are going to be not great, but steady. yeah. steady. what manufacturers have been responding to that. so there's a lot of incentives. but
5:38 am
when you go shopping the incentives are not by brand. it's model by model. so you really have to do some investigation and figure out why does this car have an incentive. and this one doesn't. okay. so we want to give you a little spoonful of sugar to make that medicine go down. there's a flying car here. let's roll that video. brian. what do you know about that? well, a flying car is something that we've been promised. and finally. so in 2025, doesn't it seem like a good year to say, like, finally the future maybe really is here, whether or not that would go through or not depends upon things like regulatory concerns. i would hope so. right. you can't just say, you know what, i think i'm just going to fly from my. but in theory it could work and that could lead to a taxi type of thing that would be able to get people from place to place without having to be in line on the bridge, that kind of stuff. excellent. okay. thank you brian. there are also 16. are there new models from 16 different makers? there are new ev options as well. so a great place to come. we have the information here on your screen. that's the cost for adults. there are different discounts for folks who are in the

5:40 am
to, we can rally around each other and recognize and celebrate all the great things that people are doing. for black joy parade is this sunday in downtown oakland. the parade route has changed. this year it will travel down broadway starting at 14th, ending on grand avenue. all things kick off at 1230, which is great because i think the weather is going to cooperate to. it's going to be a really nice weekend. we have some really nice weather last year. so it's basically a repeat of what we are going to see going into the next few days. so let's get a look at that forecast where we start out at kickoff time for that parade at about the mid 60s, and then we'll see a mix of sun and clouds. and in the upper 60s during the middle of the day at 2:00. and then the festivities continue into the afternoon. we are still looking at some really comfortable temperatures. if you are going to be packing a bag and heading to sacramento to cheer on the warriors, we are going to see temperatures in sacramento in the upper 50s at tip-off time

tonight, and then dropping down into the mid 50s late in the evening. and then for tomorrow we've got the earthquakes game and that's going to start out in the evening and it will be in the upper 50s. you do want to make sure you're layered up, but it's going to be all clear and really nice weather for that. we also have the lunar new year parade. that's tomorrow morning in oakland, starts out at 10:00. it will be in the mid 50s and then partly cloudy with those temperatures trending more toward the 60s as we go through the middle of the day. if your weekend plans take you to the sierra, it is going to be much better traveling conditions compared to last weekend, and we're going to see sunshine highs in the upper 40s and really cold overnight. we'll drop down to the mid 20s by tomorrow morning with highs near 50 degrees. mike, you have something starting off near the oakland coliseum. first we'll take the live look and show how light the traffic is northbound heading toward the bay bridge with no real backup just yet. southbound a little bit. we
5:42 am
should see some slowing around 92 coming through hayward in the next couple of minutes. but i want to talk about where you're going to see a lot of activity throughout the weekend. tonight we once again have a disney on ice show at 630, then five more shows over the course of saturday and sunday. so there may be some slowing, some tentative drivers as they pass the exits by oakland coliseum, some folks unsure of the area if that's where they're going for the first time with their family. other than that, look, it's friday, very light highway 4 no slowing through concord. just a little break tap or maybe easing up on the accelerator around mare island. typical for 37 in that spot, typically light for a friday. we're looking toward the north bay and into the city that traversing the golden gate bridge again overnight. we're down to one lane southbound, two lanes northbound. now, because it's friday into saturday. they'll finish that construction by 7 a.m. that's a little bit later than we often see. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. one note for the south bay. it will be a little fluffy over here because gabriel iglesias has his concert over at sap
5:43 am
center. fans know that he goes by the nickname fluffy over there. back to you. yeah he is. he's funny. thanks so much. 542 for you right now, another sign our climate in crisis is likely getting worse. ahead here on today in the bay, the parts of the bay area where land is sinking at a troubling rate. and we hear from one scientist who explains the reason this may continue to happen. the governor of illinois makes a warning about the future of america under maga. it goes viral. we'll show it to you coming up. save some room for donuts with your morning coffee. we have old fashioned creme brulee, raspberry jelly, and strawberry lemonade. you take your choice of donuts this morning. we'll give you all the details on bob's donuts opening its new doors in san francisco. but first, here's another edition of our school shoutout series. hi, i'm miss emerson and this is my fifth grade class at neil armstrong. good morning, bay

46. the governor of illinois is going viral in a speech about the future of america and scott mcgrew. it was part of governor pritzker's state of the state speech. now, those are usually
5:47 am
pretty dry. those are usually pretty boring. but this one not. j.b. pritzker has been very vocal. vocal rather about his concerns about president trump and the maga movement last night, comparing it directly to germany in the 30s. and part of that speech got lots of attention. here's a long sample of governor pritzker's address. i'm watching with a foreboding dread what is happening in our country right now. a president who watches a plane go down in the potomac and suggests, without facts or findings, that a diversity hire is responsible for the crash. or the missouri attorney general who just sued starbucks, arguing that consumers pay higher prices for their coffee because the baristas are too female and nonwhite. the authoritarian playbook is laid bare here. they point to a group of people who don't look like you and tell you to blame them for your problems. i just have one question. what
5:48 am
comes next after we've discriminated against, deported, or disparaged all the immigrants and the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women and the minorities. once we've ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends after that, when the problems we started with are still there, staring us in the face, what comes next? president trump twice hinted at running for a third term thursday. once at a white house observation of black history month, again at a conference of governors. now the constitution forbids a third term. trump also talked about the massive cuts to government. but we've had a lot of fun doing it, too. it's a pleasure to do it. we just ripped down whatever they've done. it's almost like, i want to just do one executive order. anything he signed is now terminated. a new washington post ipsos poll shows a majority of americans do not like the way trump is going about reshaping the u.s. government, and it's
5:49 am
showing up in some of the town halls. members of congress hold. this is video from a small town north of atlanta, georgia. deeply republican with republican congressman rich mccormick getting pushback from some of his constituents over trump and elon musk. that ipsos poll says 58% of americans disapprove of large scale layoffs. 69% think tariffs china will make things morend expensive. kash patel will be the next director of the fbi. the senate confirmed him thursday. the directorship wasn't supposed to be empty, but christopher wray quit early. every democratic senator, two republicans voted no. they're concerned about patel's conspiracy theories, support of january 6th rioters and what they call patel's enemies list. here's one of our senators, alex padilla. so for people listening to us today thinking, well, maybe this is just politics as usual. of course, democrats are
5:50 am
going to oppose president trump's nominees. no, this is not a distraction. the new york times reports the u.s. has refused to sign a document marking the third anniversary of the invasion of ukraine because it because it causes or calls, rather russia the aggressor. speaker of the house, meantime suggested at cpac there would be no more money to support ukraine's defense. look, there's no appetite for that. what do you think? i know, yeah, we got our answer there. we have to. we have to bring it to an end. there may be big changes afoot at the post office as trump considers shutting down the governing board there. we're going to talk kari about that as we tal business in a half an hour. thanks, scott. now to our climate in crisis. cities around the bay area are sinking at an alarming rate, according to a nasa led study. scientists use satellite and radar to track the coastline and identify hotspots. the fastest sinking spots
5:51 am
include san rafael, corte madera, foster city and bay farm island in alameda, next to the oakland airport. researchers say these areas are sinking at a rate more than 0.4in per year. the changes can come from human cost factors like groundwater pumping or natural activity like earthquakes, heavy rain or drought that could accelerate some sort of erosional processes. but that could also really be associated with recharging of the underground water storages or aquifers. the bay area is also notoriously known for tectonic activity and historical earthquakes, so that is also another factor that is very hard to plug into the projections. we don't know for certain when one of these big earthquakes will happen. and even the smaller magnitude earthquake can really shake the earth and, and accelerate the
5:52 am
sinking of these certain pockets. nasa predicts the local sea levels could rise more than 17in by 20. that's more than double the regional estimate of 7.4in. to learn more about this study and climate change in the bay area as well as possible solutions, visit our website nbcbayarea.com and click on the climate crisis tab to check it out. thanks, kari. all right. check this out. 551 right now, this morning, the legacy of a san francisco business continues as a new chapter begins. san francisco's bob's donuts opens doors on its newest storefront later this morning. but what the opening signals goes beyond the sweet smell of donuts. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us inside there. and ginger today really is a big step for the original san francisco small business owner. absolutely. you just mentioned the sweet smell of donuts, and
5:53 am
that's exactly what has just encapsulated this whole entire new store here in bob's donuts. we're going to get right to it and show you how these guys are preparing for the grand opening of bob's new storefront this morning. bob's is a legacy business here in san francisco. it's been around since the 1960s and at this point has two other locations. but the oning of this store is significant. we're on the 1700 block of polk street, inside where all those delicious new donuts that you're taking a look at is getting ready for people who are ready to come out to the new store this morning. the old store original location is on the 1600 block, and that is where bob's has been serving the community for almost 60 years now. now, i spoke to rebecca on their family owns bob's, and she said that they wanted to say at the new location but unfortunately couldn't come to terms with their landlord. so they moved about 300ft away. they're still serving the community, which is
5:54 am
their top priority, and that community has been loyal to bob's donuts. samples are being handed out today. the first 80 people are getting free merch as well. i'm going to keep i'm going to bother these guys who are getting ready, ready to sugar some of these donuts. take a look at that. oh yeah. make sure you make some room for those donuts with your coffee this morning. the new store opens at 10 a.m. they're doing a whole big celebration here. we're going to give you more in the next hour, but for now, we're going to send it back to you guys. i'm going to take a bite of this donut in a little bit, but this is definitely this is definitely a sweet spot in the transition because this location is about 300ft away from the old location. so you have two bob's donuts almost within two blocks of each other. guys, back to you. we just need some elevation. yeah, it's a win win there. you just walk back and forth there. i'm tired and need something to eat. my
5:55 am
sugar's low. yeah. all right. that'll get you going on a friday morning, maybe. and some coffee? yes. so let's get started with a look at our temperatures that we will see going into the afternoon. cool morning. but this is where we're headed once again back to the mid to upper 60s. and it will be very much like it was yesterday. but the warming trend continues into our weekend. after seeing 60 today, we'll be in the low 70s for the tri-valley and the interior east bay, los gatos tomorrow up to 73 degrees and 75 in gilroy, and still those upper 60s for the north bay. and really no change on sunday as well. so the warm weather and spring like feel starts to make its arrival in the bay area, with some rain very close to the north bay sunday night and monday morning. there will be that slight chance there, but otherwise we're looking at a dry weekend. dry all next week and temperatures hold steady with our mornings in the 40s. highs in the 70s and san francisco each day. we'll see highs in the mid 60s. mike, you are checking in on the bay bridge. yeah, we're looking at a more densely
5:56 am
populated bay bridge itself. i shouldn't say dense because it's still got good spang here, but there are more cars here creating little more slowing. you see the sensors turning yellow and orange as you're approaching treasure island in the city. no metering lights registered yet, and no backup at the maze or at the berkeley curve. a little slowing bills for highway 37. and you know what? there may be a car fire alongside highway four. we'll check on that. coming in toward pittsburgh out of antioch. the rest of the contra costa county drive and the rest of the bay shows a nice smooth flow of traffic. a little slowing in the south bay here. remember, this week was vacation for some school monday should come back stronger. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 555 right now. california's insurance crisis only seems to be getting worse. ahead at 6:00, the latest companies upping their rates in the way you could prevent your insurer from dropping your coverage altogether. and don't forget, you can watch us. 24 seven nbc bay area streams whenever you like on roku and other platforms. all you have to do is scan that bar code that's on your screen, and it will get
