5:00 am
he's getting up there in age. but you know, we just pray to god that everything works out.
5:01 am
right now, at five prayers pouring in for pope francis. the 88 year old pontiff, still in critical condition with kidney failure. but the vatican says he remains alert. we have the latest on his condition and treatment this morning. plus facing dismissal. the clock ticking o capitol hill. elon musk and his department of government efficiency is demanding to know what federal workers accomplished last week, or face termination as the new cuts overnight to u.s. aid. and here's a live look outside as we start a brand new workweek. we'll help clear it up with meteorologist kari hall, who is tracking our full forecast. this is today in the bay. foggy start out there this morning. good morning. yeah, i thought it was just monday. right. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. mike has a look at that foggy mornin,
5:02 am
let's talk about the cause of it all. the weather. meteorologist. kari. a lot of humidity in the air and even some spotty sprinkles in spots as we're looking at this system passing by. and we've seen some very light showers moving through. that will be the possibility, at least as we go into about 8 to 9:00. and then looking at the bigger picture here, here's a look at the system that' moving through the bay area. it's a fairly weak one, but once it passes, we are going to see a slight chance of rn and then gradually clearing up right now. the fog is the issue for the south bay. visibility in some spots cut down a lot lower, but at the airport it's at about three miles. and as we go throughout the day, we'll have a partly cloudy day and temperatures warming up into the mid to upper 60. warmer will be the word of the week. we'll talk about that coming up. and mike, now you have a crash in the south bay. yeah. we've been tracking this. and the latest update we had was an early report that all lanes were blocked at montague expressway. we do see the sensors change from red to orange in the last
5:03 am
couple of minutes, but chp confirms all les are still blocked north. 880 as you approach montague. that's over here out of san jose and heading up toward milpitas. there we go. the sensors change again. there's activity clearly there. 680 will take you well past the scene. if you happen to take surface streets, you can get on north of montague and you're okay through the south bay. anywhere north of there. we're looking all right as far as those speed sensors go. i do want to show you that camera in emeryville. we have to point the camera straight down at the ground in order to see any of the lights. anything farther out than that? we do get those low clouds and fog. back to you. thank you very much, mike. well, this morning, many around the world praying for pope francis as he remains in critical condition. the 88 year old pontiff is suffering from a number of health issues. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us this morning with more on how the pope is doing. good morning to you, marcus and laura. so it is 2:00 in the afternoon in rome. and vatican sources say pope francis had a good morning, considering everything he's been through. they say he's eating normally. he is in good spirits. but the pope's medical condition is still critical. over the weekend, he became anemic and
5:04 am
had to have a transfusion. and he developed mild kidney, a mild loss of kidney function, which the vatican now says is under control. he still has double pneumonia and is getting forced oxygen, which means that doctors are trying to make it less work for him to breathe. doctor natalie azar tked with the today show this morning and says the pope's condition can improve or deteriorate fast. he actually comes to the situation already with some compromised lung function. he did have part of his lung removed as a young adult because of a severe infection, and he has two underlying lung conditions asthma as well as something called bronchiectasis. so he already has a susceptibility to infection. so when you get something like this on top of already being slightly compromised, you know, i don't know that he's going to bounce back completely to baseline, but he absolutely can turn the corner and get better. people did gather to pray for the pope around the world, including at saint joseph's cathedral in san jose and also in his hometown of buenos aires, argentina. the
5:05 am
pope's image was projected onto the obelisk there in the city center. people also gathering in africa and in rome and in new york. and in a social media post, pope francis thanked everyone for their prayers and the doctors and the staff who are helping him. the pope now has been in the hospital for ten days. and, you know, we all have a senior folks in our family and we know that it just it's scary. he's 88. 88. yeah. so we'll continue to pray for him always. all right. thank you very much. we'll of course, continue to follow the very latest from the vatican, both on air and online. if you haven't already, you can download our free nbc bay area app to get breaking news alerts that can be sent straight to your phone. well, there is more conflict and confusion this morning for around 2.3 million federal employees. thousands laid off or fired over the weekend, including the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, along with senior defense officers from the navy and air

force. today in the bay's jay gray. live for us this morning over in washington with a look at the latest cuts there and what could come for us next, jay? yeah. and marcus, i think the only thing we know for se right now is that president trump is continuing to be all in on his plan to pare down the federal government. this morning, though, the white house does appear to be getting at least a bit of pushback, and it's coming from inside the administration. this morning, millions of federal workers wake up unsure if they'll have a job by the end of the week. president trump, pressing ahead with his aggressive government overhaul, delivering pink slips to employees across at least 18 departments and agencies. we're removing all of the unnecessary, incompetent and corrupt bureaucrats from the federal workforce. around 1600 usaid employees laid off late sunday. a majority of the remaining staff placed on administrative
5:07 am
leave. waste is pretty much everywhere. people ask, how can you find waste in like in dc? billionaire elon musk, head of the administration's self-proclaimed department of government efficiency, emailing millions of federal workers over the weekend, asking them to list five bullet points outlining what they accomplished last week. adding on social media, failure to respond before midnight tonight will be taken as a resignation. what donald trump is doing is illegal. it's violative of our constitution and it has to be stopped. that message from democrats echoed in weekend town hall meetings across the country. when are you going to wrest control of the congress back from the executive and stop hurting your constituents? pushback also coming from inside the administration. the fbi, state department, national institutes of health, defense department and nsa telling employees to pause on responding or not respond at all to the proof of performance email. i think we should point out other agencies, including health and human
5:08 am
services and the centers for medicare and medicaid services, have asked their employees to respond and do it by tonight's deadline. the bureau of prisons, though mark is asking for guidance before advising its employees about how to move forward. all right, jay, before you go, has the white house had any response to that decision by several agency heads to either delay or not respond to that email at all from doge? yeah, not directly marcus, but understand this was all happening over the weekend andnd we haven't heard anything from elon musk either about that decision. what i can tell you is over the weekend, the president did say that he wants musk to be even more aggressive with these cutting measures. so it's pretty clear where the administration stands on this. but but any direct pushback from the white house towards what's going on with those agencies? not yet, though i would bet we may see and hear something a bit later today. yeah. more strict on that. i've heard from some federal employees myself. not happy about where things are
5:09 am
right now. all right. well, we will continue to watch. all right. thank you so much, jay. today marks three years since russia's invasion of ukraine. and today, a dozen western leaders meeting with ukrainian president vladimir zelensky. president trump is not among them. european union leaders arrived this morning in kyiv. kyiv. canadian prime minister justin trudeau is among those attending the summit. he is pledging to send ukraine $5 billion in new assistance funded by seized russian assets. zelenskyy is calling on allies to honor their promises to supply ukraine with weapons to counter russian attacks. now this all follows russia's largest drone attack on kyiv since the start of the war. president zelenskyy says russia yesterday launched more than 200 drones in at least three ballistic missiles. more than half the drones were downed by ukraine's defense system. many others were jammed by electronic warfare. at least one civilian death is now confirmed. back

here at home, 509 for you this morning, as we take a live look at what? that's the golden gate bridge. karl, the fog is sticking around. this morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect outside. and certainly can't see a lot. yeah, we've had some fog moving around some different areas. so as you're heading out just a heads up that you might want to allow some extra time as we're getting some low visibility in parts of the south bay, east bay and also the golden gate bridge. now as we get a looat our current temperatures, it is a little bit milder in the low 50s and will warm up a little bit more today, with a high of 68 degrees expected in san jose. we're about the same in oakland, with a high of 64 and also low to mid 60s in much of the north bay. we'll talk about that slight chance of rain we're getting this morning and what's ahead coming up. mike has a look at how you can save a few cents very few cents at the gas pump. and if you haven't filled up in a week you're going to say savings. my goodness. all right. we're looking over here san jose instead of 409. actually the low
5:11 am
has jumped up to 414. this is at speedway express on story road. so those gas prices do continue to rise since by cents week by week over here alameda county the best price is 4.29. in the middle. we're going to head to sunol for sunol super stop on andrade road. and the same best price if you're filling up in the city san francisco, that would be 429 again at arco on fell street. check your area, check gasbuddy.com. there may have been changes even over the weekend. we have changes on the roadway. green sensors dominate the map, but down here in the south bay, north 880 had all lanes blocked until about three minutes ago. north 880 now registers all lanes open at montague expressway. no major injuries. the earlier crash has cleared from the roadway. i just want to show you nearby. 280 at 17. there's fog here. low clouds. that will be an issue for many drivers. back to you. thanks so much, mike. 511 this morning nationwide shutdown of ev chargers ahead here on today in the bay. the reason the agency in charge of managing buildings owned by the federal government will begin shutting

down thousands of charging stations. plus splitting the bill. the new feature, one phone carrier is now rolling out for its customers. we'll explain how it works. much more news ahead. you're

good morning. it is now 514. time to get back to work. and as we take a look at our morning commute from antioch, it's going to be in the low 50s and
5:15 am
starting out nice and mild. some patches of fog here and there, and look for the sun to peek out every now and then. but we will see more clouds andun until this afternoon. we'll get a look at what you can expect for the week ahead. coming up in a few minutes. yeah. right now we're looking at our dublin camera, where often we find the only patches of fog on our cameras. right now, it's the only one of the only clear views here. a smooth drive out of the altamont pass. things are smooth to the dublin interchange. we'll talk about the recovery for 880 in the south bay. coming up. good morning. i'm silvana henao from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher as the markets look to recover from the slide late last week, with the dow falling 750 points on friday. that was on the back of weaker data on housing, on manufacturing and consumer sentiment and all this raising worries about the strength of the economy. the dow falling 2.5% for the week. that's its worst performance since october, the s&p 500 dropping more than 1.5% for the week, and the nasdaq 2.5% now in

responsible for the bill, and late payments can still result in extra fees or suspended service. the company will text each payer a link and what they owe each billing cycle. marcus. laura. that's a good idea, right? especially when you're sending your kids off to launch, you know, and they've been under your plan. this is true. right. exactly. like. all right. thanks, silvana. for sure. well, new for you this morning. a former pro football player's brand new graphic novel shares his in and out this world experience following life as an athlete. leland melvin's new book, space chasers, details the second of his two dream careers. before he was an astronaut, he was a pro football player until injuries got the best of that football career. melvin then moved from the nfl to his backup plan, becoming an astronaut, and he hopes his new book can inspire future generations. when i was a kid, i was five years old when the m moon lanng happened. i didn't see myself as being an astronaut because i didn't see someone look like me.

scientific american did a study, i think it was back in 2013, and it showed that the most diverse teams give you the best solutions. it doesn't matter how you slice and dice the diversity, whether it's age or color or culture or race, whatever it is, it will result in the best solution. and that's why it's important that kids see themselves to be part of the solution. leland's solution will actually be a series of graphic novels. space chasers is just the first in a three part series. well, what a weekend in oakland. the last just yestday. it was a great experience. this is where thousands of people celebrate the past, present and future of black culture, food and music and so much more. downtown oakland was alive yesterday for the eighth annual black joy parade. that route ran through
5:19 am
broadway in downtown from 14th to grand. this is where an all day festival kept that party going. that event featured two stages of activities for the entire family, and more than 200 vendors out there highlighting black owned businesses. some people traveled miles to attend. oh my goodness. dallas, texas. oh yeah. all the way specifically for this. ever been to the parade? no, this is our first time. how do you like it? amazing. yeah, i love it. it's so fulfilling. it really is cool. yeah. kari and i were actually there walking the parade route along with our assignment editors right there to khanna russell. alyssa gore was out there as well. it was so much fun. always a lot of fun out there. and folks said hello to you all as well. good. yeah, a lot of fun. i love it i love the little kids folks on roller skates out there. you got those great shots from above. and i noticed that you're holding the camera. right now. beautiful
5:20 am
weather this weekend. yeah, it was nice. and, you know, we're going to continue that this afternoon. a little bit of some wet weather and some fog this morning, but it will be clearing out soon. and we're back to the warm temperatures and also a little bit more sunshine ahead. this is a look at the fog that we're seeing over san jose. it's going to take a while before it clears out. we're not seeing as much of the low visibility in walnut creek, so it's been kind of hit or miss in spots where we are seeing the fog and where we're not looking at some very light, spotty rain as we get a look at the satellite radar. there is a system passing by and that's going to keep it cloudy for a little while. even once the fog starts to lift a little bit. we'll be in the mid 50s and morgan hill staying in the mid 50s through about 10:00, and then starting to see the sun peeking out right before noon, and temperatures headed for the upper 60s here, also in the mid to upper 60s for the east bay, 64 for santa rosa to napa, as well as san francisco. and then looking at tomorrow, those temperatures start to go up a
5:21 am
little bit more. 71 in san jose, as well as much of the south county and for the north bay as well. and then check out wednesday. 77 degrees is where we're headed for the south bay, mid 70s for the east bay and up to 75 in santa rosa and ukiah in the mid 60s for san francisco. looking ahead, we will have some very warm temperatures this week, but we will see a cold front dropping in just in time to come in for the weekend. we'reooking at some mid 60s and much cooler next week. that's mainly because we will see a storm system arriving, and that's going to bring in not only some cooler weather, but also some rain. so looking ahead to the rest of the forecast, very warm week, lots of sunshine and then showers and cooler weather for the weekend. mike, you were checking on the recovery for 880? yeah, very quick recovery because traffic flow is so light right now. so 880 northbound coming up from 101 approaching montague expressway. the earlier crash had all lanes blocked for about
5:22 am
a half hour. no major injuries and now no slowing. it's all recovered. there may be activity on the shoulder as marked it on the map there, but the south bay continues to flow smoothly and no further slowing just yet. it's four.t's 520 right now. another 20 minutes. another 15 minutes. we should see a little bit of slowing toward oakland road. if everything goes according to schedule, it is going to go according to schedule here on this map. contra costa county a little blip here, maybe some easing off the accelerator through concord and a little slowing through 37. back to you. thanks, mike. 521 right now, next on nbc bay area today in the bay nbc bay area response just ahead of spring break. investigative reporter chris kamara breaks down the way you can save on your next hotel booking plus. hey everyone, it's ricardo moreno and i'm on team bubble this season on the voice. i'm so excited to represent san jose, california. thank you for the support and be

members hotel deals that do not have a resort fee. trd, see if your company has a negotiated hotel rate. many employers, especially the big ones, brokered deals with the hotel chains. part of that negotiation is nixing resort fees, and somemes you can use your corporate rate for leisure travel. thanks, boss. fourth, see if your loyalty pays. at least one hotel chain waives resort fees for its top tier members. we know that's not for everyone, but tip number five is see if using points instead of cash to pay for your stay makes sense. even if you have to buy the points. here's why. many hotels do not charge resort fees when you're redeeming their points. good advice. we were talking about how we use those on vacation. all right, 527 right now, next year, the top stories we're following the major boost one local company is getting as the search for alternatives ramps up. all this as the bird flu leads to price

employees. we spoke with one bay area worker about the fine line. he's walking just to keep his job. the manhunt continues on the peninsula to track down a gunman who ambushed a police officer. the latest on the investigation and the ripple effect it still having in the offices of one local government. also ensuring accountability. the new tool being unveiled today to track spending on the unhoused across california. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you on this monday. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. hope you had a great weekend. i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast for this monday. meteorologist kari hall is tracking things for us. a little foggy in some parts. yeah, a little foggy. a little drizzly. we have a weather system passing by. it's a weak one, so we haven't seen a lot of rainfall. but you may notice that everything is a little damp as you're heading out early this morning. and the rain is now pushing to the south
5:32 am
of us. we're left with some patches of fog that's been pretty dense in some spots, like half moon bay. visibility down to a quarter of a mile. but we've also seen the fog moving from fremont to milpitas to san jose and down to the south county. and in some areas that are not used to seeing the fog all the time, it is clear in palo alto as well as walnut creek, while san francisco's foggy. and once it clears, we're headed for the mid to upper 60s for this afternoon. mike, you have a look now at the bay bridge. yeah. so we see some folks starting to slow down approaching the toll plaza. volume bills. we also see the glow for the lights. top of the screen, folks. you see that along the east shore freeway you can see the lights, but the low clouds there are just at the roof line there as well. so that will be a factor for some as the road rises and falls and the clouds continue to come up and down throughout the course of the morning. no major complications slowing shows for highway four. 37 at the bay bridge. no metering lights just yet, although they may be turned on any second now. bottom of the screen. a little fog registering for 85 and that will creep

around. back to you. thank you. mike. well, pope francis remains in critical condition this morning as he receives treatment for double pneumonia and mild kidney problems. vatican sources saying that the pontiff woke up overnight and is in good spirits while sleeping and resting. he participated in holy mass on sunday with those caring for him. catholics around the u.s. are praying for his recovery, including those right here in the bay area. just yesterday mass at saint joseph's cathedral in san jose. many say that they hope that the pope has a speedy recovery. we keep the pope in our prayers all the time, especially right now. so specifically this sunday we here at the temple so we can pray for our pope. he is a good pope and helps a lot to the entire world to spread the catholic religion. in a social media post yesterday, pope francis thanked everyone for their prayers and the doctors and staff who are helping him. 533 right now, hillsborough leaders plan to keep the town hall closed

indefinitely as the manhunt continues for the gunman, who shot and injured a police officer. it happened saturday afternoon when the officer was ambushed in the police department parking lot. it triggered a lengthy shelter in place as teams search for the shooter, who they now believe targeted the officer. police say the injured officer returned fire, but the shooter ran from the scene. officers eventually located a person of interest, but that person was not arrested. the officer is expected to recover. an emergency preparedness session planned for tonight at hillsborough town hall is now canceled. well, students at two north bay schools will return to class this morning with heavy hearts after the death of two teenagers, police say involved fentanyl. now, those were just two in a series of weekend overdoses, all happening in the city of santa rosa. today in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning there. and bob, heartbreaking situation there. what are people saying in the
5:35 am
community. well good morning to tell you two santa rosa police department, they are under under operating under the assumption that the four people did not realize that they were taking fentanyl when they overdosed. not only thahat, police say that the first responders did have their hands full with at least four separate fentanyl overdoses, two of them fatal. a 16 year-old girl and an 18 year old man. they were both found unresponsive in a bed in one home on brookwood drive. this was saturday night. the 16 year-old attended santa rosa high school. the 18 year old went to montgomery high school. in a separate case, a 14 year old and a 16 year old girl were hospitalized with fentanyl overdoses. and police believe in all cases, the again, the victims believed they were buying cocaine, not fentanyl. it's not yet clear if those cases are related now, but police later did detain a 21 year old suspect. this was sunday afternoon. yesterday afternoon, who they say possessed materials including small plastic baggies they say
5:36 am
are linked to the deadly overdoses. the names of the students who have died have not been announced. the investigation is ongoing. also, the school district, santa rosa city schools. they released an email yesterday to parents and students about the deaths of four students. now, the two other deaths involved another student, also from an overdose but not believed related to this case. and the fourth death was at 21 year old, who died from natural causes. the district is promising to have grief counselors on hand at santa rosa high and montgomery high behind me when classes resume this morning. reporting live here in santa rosa, bob redell. today in the bay. yeah, tough for a lot of the students, but the families of those involved, too. all right, bob, thank you. 535 right now, the trump administration is moving forward with firing 1600 u.s. aid workers. in addition, all but a fraction of the agency's employees are being placed on administrative leave as of this morning. it comes after a

federal judge last week rejected a lawsuit seeking to block the firings. the administration says workers who were put on leave overseas are expected to receive voluntary agency funding, returned to return to travel, as well as other benefits. now, all of this comes as thousands of federal workers face a deadline. elon musk wants them to outline five accomplishments that they've achieved in their roles by the end of the night. if they refuse, they could lose their job. today, in the bay's alyssa goard sat down exclusively with one federal worker who is trying to figure out what to do. saturday afternoon, this federal government employee and bay area resident saw an email in his work mailbox with the subject line, what did you do last week? he was asked to send in five things he accomplished with a deadline of monday night. many of us are looking at our email on a daily basis because we're we're anticipating things like this happening all the time. it's not shocking anymore. this
5:38 am
employee asked us not to show his face or use his real name for fear of retaliation. we've also distorted his voice to protect his identity. we'll call him james. he wasn't the only one who got the email. saturday, elon musk posted on x, saying the message was sent to all federal employees and failure to respond will be taken as a resignation. the other part that really bothered me was, who's going to read these and to qualify that what i did justifies me having my job. james has survived the recent rounds of layoffs for federal workers, as musk and the department of government efficiency seek to cut the federal spending. james has been in his current role for 11 months, so h he's sti a probationary employee, something employment attorney michael bernick says puts his job more at risk. yes, there are quick actions being taken. some of them will result in layoffs, particularly with probationary workers and contractors. but it
5:39 am
also be a process that will be slowed somewhat as these issues work their way through the courts. bernick points out not all federal agencies seem aligned about this latest directive. the department of defense told employees to pause responding to the email. nbc news reports employees at the fbi, the state department, the national institutes of health and the nsa got similar messages. i think given what we've seen on the pushback, this particular email will have little or no impact. still, the deadline is looming. james drafted a response to the email, but says he's holding off, sending it at the request of his union. in the long term, he's worried his department and others will lose institutional knowledge and valuable staff. there are people behind these jobs. there are people in the community. there are the friends, family, neighbors. they're not just faceless people pushing paper around, collecting paychecks in washington, d.c. they're all around the united states. alyssa goard today in the bay. well, happening today, governor gavin newsom unveils a

new tool meant to track how cities are doing in its fight against homelessness. a recent study by the hoover institute finds that california has spent $24 billion on the unhoused over the past five years. now, in that time, the number of homeless statewide is now six times higher. the governor's office says that the new homeless funding accountability tool will allow californians to assess the community's progress in addressing housing and mental health assistance. he's holding a virtual news conference this afternoon during a live demonstration as well. let's take a live look outside, shall we? from the south bay, san jose. can you make it out? yeah, exactly. as you head out the door, be aware there is some fog blanketing the bay area. kari has got a look at our forecast. we are seeing a foggy morning, some mist and drizzle. and as we take a look at the radar satellite, just cloud cover all across the bay area. every now and then we've seen some very light showers coming down and temperatures starting out much warmer than where we've seen it
5:41 am
recently. we're in the low to mid 50s across of the peninsula, down to the south bay, as well as the east bay. we've been looking at that fog that will hang around through at least 8:00. at 10:00 we're seeing the sun starting to peek out, and it will be in the mid 60s for later. today won't be all clear, but we are looking at some more sunshine and warmer temperatures ahead and a very comfortable afternoon. we'll get a look at the rest of the week coming up. and mike, you're seeing the bay bridge backing up. yeah. how quickly it happens. less than ten minutes ago, we showed you an empty toll plaza with just some slowing toward the toll plaza itself. right about then, when they activated those metering lights, we see the backup forming already filling in pretty much all the lanes back to the end of the parking lot. so that's a quick build here. but it is monday, folks. getting back to work. we see slowing on the span itself is slowing on highway 37, continuing to build out of vallejo, and more coming into concord out of pittsburgh and bay point. so watch that for contra costa county. that will mean a bill that we'll talk about that coming down through the vasco road area. but right

now, i do want to warn you that there's a concert tonight. so there may be some additional activity if you pass by the coliseum after work concerts at 730. tyler, the creator, as opposed to tyler, the guy who's not so creative. that would be not a fun concert over the south bay. we do see north 101 showing your typical slow. we talk about patches of fog. no major issues. vasco road still about 20 minutes. coming down out of contra costa county to 580, which is seeing a little more slowing through dublin coming up as the builds. back to you mike the creative. i like it. all right. thanks, mike. 541 right now. a tennis legend shows the bay area some love. just ahead on today in the bay. the major event andre agassi is preparing for. that will bring tennis fans from around the world to san francisco. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco, where there is growing concern amid the ongoing bird flu outbreak. this, as a workers at a y testing lab, are set to strike later this week. we'll have more onhat after t

i don't ever see anyone coming out to maintenance anything, so it's very scary for me because i have everything i love in this home. so, we've now implemented drone technology. how is that safe for me? it enhances the inspection, so it allows us to see things faster. your safety is the most important, and if you're feeling unsafe, that's not okay. it doesn't feel like that in our hearts. i mean, it's worrisome. good monday morning. it is 544. let's take a live look outside at walnut creek. starting out with some fog here and there. but at least for this stretch of the interstate, we're seeing it looking pretty clear for your drive to work this morning. but just a heads up that you may encounter some of that fog on the way. and we're going to see a lot of clouds throughout the morning and milder temperatures
5:46 am
and some peeks of sun this afternoon. it warms up this week. we'll take a look at those temperatures coming up. and we are looking down at the freeway and literally looking down at the freeway closest to us. that was the only place we could see through some of that. low clouds and fog cover at the emeryville area. tail lights heading toward the bay bridge. much clearer view right now. we'll see how as those sensors go. we do see those slowing. thank you very much, kari and mike. it's 5:45 right now, and we are following some breaking news in oakland, where there is heavy police presence. there are responding to an apartment complex along 85th avenue near g street. this video is from citizen app of the scene. the intersection we know is closed right now as officers investigate. we are still working to learn up, to learn what led up to this investigation. we have calls out to find out more information, but we are monitoring what is going on at 85th near g street, where there is a heavy police

presence. when we get more information, we will pass it on to you. this morning there is growing concern amid the bird flu outbreak. thousands of uc researchers and technicians are set to strike this week, including at a testing lab, which is key in testing for the disease. now, all of this comes as prices for eggs rise and many seek alternatives. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us this morning. okay, so, ginger, we could see even more fallout following this strike. that is correct. marcus and lauren we're talking about upt university professional and technical employees. that union has confirmed that they will strike later this week. and some of those workers are responsible for testing at a key lab that handles the most dangerous types or forms of the bird flu. that can further impact how california can respond to this ongoing outbreak for the bird flu. and we've already seen the impact of it on our pockets. egg prices have jumped more than 15%
5:48 am
from a year ago. a carton of eggs now cost americans about $5, but here in the bay area, you can even see that eggs cost more than that. producers are blaming it on the bird flu. they say they are forced to euthanize millions of chickens, and they also need quick and accurate testing, which is where the looming strike can hit producers even more, costing them tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. however, this has become a timely opportunity for companies offering egg alternatives. we recently visited the headquarters of just eggs in alameda. we spoke to eat just ceo and co-founder josh tetrick. now, the company has been around for over a decade, offering a plant based alternative to the egg. tetrick saw an opportunity to disrupt an industry where there are 2 trillion eggs laid around the world, with 94% of americans eating eggs. most of those eggs
5:49 am
are laid in a way that if people are watching the saw, they'd be like, not really. down with that chickens and tiny little cages. a lot of sickness. so we thought, is there a better way to do it? well, they didn't find the better way right away, but after about six years of experimenting and millions of dollars later, they found their answer in the mung bean. it's a green bean that's been around for centuries. that little bean has sprouted big for tetrick and just egg. it sold over 500 million eggs since its launch in recent months. growth for the business has gone about five times faster than it did this period last year and the next hour. marcus and laura are going to show you how we put that mung bean egg alternative to the test. we'll see if it folds, cooks, and even tastes like an egg. we'll show you that shortly in the next hour. for now, we're live in san francisco, ginger

francisco yesterday to promote the arrival of the laver cup tennis tournament. that event will take place at chase center this september, putting six men's european champions against since six champions from the rest of the world. agassi will serve as the team worldaptain. during his career, he won five of his 60 atp tournaments titles right here in the bay area. he calls this a long overdue homecoming, coming back to san francisco. it feels wonderful for me. it's great for the city. it hasn't had tennis here in a long time. i've always played really well here over my career. i lived here for six years, so i'm thrilled to be here. okay, maybe you remember san jose hosted the last top level tennis tournament back in 2013. the event's star studded lineup include top young american ben shelton, who's currently ranked 13th in the world. he calls this a team based event, something fans and athletes will love. it's more entertaining than a

normal tennis tournament because you get to see the interaction between players and in an individual sport, it's few and far between. when that happens, obviously you showed more emotion when you're playing for something bigger than yoursel and it's a format that's that's very engaging. it's not many times where you get to see so many top players play against each other back to back. the laver cup takes place at chase center september 19th through the 21st. those tickets go on sale this friday. turning now to a historic win over the weekend for olympian mikaela shiffrin. keep in mind she's already the winningest alpine skier of all time. mikaela shiffrin. it is 100 untouchable, unreachable and i think unrepeatable. unbelievable. yesterday, shiffrin extended her world cup win record with her 100th world cup win in the giant slalom in italy. she broke the previous record of 86 world cup wins in

2023. the event marked her sixth race back since missing two months following a crash in november. she's really showing how it is done. i know she's setting records, but i mean, have you not seen you on the slopes? i thought you could exactly beat that. yeah, i make that sound exactly to myself. when she's on the chair, she's like, oh, i don't know. it is fun. boy, nice days to head up to tahoe. absolutely. and we saw a little bit of some light snow coming down. we do see more in the future for the weekend, but until then, it's going to be mainly clear. and we're seeing the fog making it hard to see right now as we take a look at this live view in san francisco. some drizzle on the camera lens, so expect that to be on your windndshield a well as you're driving to work. it is clear in san rafael, but the fog has been moving around some spots as this weather system. you can see that area of low pressure that swirl the clouds. but overall, the rain that we've seen has been fairly light and very hit or miss. looking at the visibility
5:54 am
right now. the fog is pretty bad around half moon bay. and we're also seeing that at the golden gate bridge and parts of the peninsula, but also for the south bay. as we've seen that fog moving in, it's been getting thicker for parts of the south san jose area down to the south county, but once it clears up, we are in for a few peeks of sunshine today and high temperatures in the upper 60s from dublin to livermore, as well as san jose down to gilroy. for much of the rest of the bay area, it will be in the mid 60s from san francisco to the north bay. but notice the jump in temperatures. we'll see tomorrow with more sunshine. it will be in the upper 60s for palo alto and oakland, as well as some upper 60s for novato and in napa on wednesday in the santa rosa, we're up to 75 degrees. that's one of the warmer spots. while in the south bay, we're going to see a high of 77 degrees. how long has it been since we've had weather that warm? we are going to continue to stay very nice and springlike through friday.
5:55 am
and then for fairfield, we'll see those temperatures taking a big dip this weekend as we are going to see some scattered showers and possibly some rain coming in. we were talking about that chance of sierra snow. it looks like it will be a colder storm system dropping in with more rain possible next week. so a look at our 7-day forecast shows it's mostly dry throughout the week, with the exception of the mist and drizzle we're seeing this morning and the rest of the week warming up to the mid 70s and then cooling down for the weekend. mike, you're seeing that crowd building now in san jose and san jose. now we're looking over here toward the live camera where things are starting to loosen up a bit. but we heard about an issue a disabled vehicle just north of this portion of 101 at alum rock. it was reported in the southbound side. all the slowing was northbound. i think it was actually in the commute direction, and they may have cleared it out of the lanes because you see some recovery for speeds as well. whatever going on, there may be less distraction, but then there's an issue coming up from the south county area heading down to the south county. you see that fog
5:56 am
register has drifted over to the east a little bit, including 101 and 85, and we're looking at north 101 at tully. there may be a crash affecting you if that's your onramp. so a lot of activity rht here in this zone for san jose. no surprises where we see this slowing. and we'll continue to track that recovery. and also the fog being an issue now coming up from morgan hill into san jose. no problems out of the altamont pass. a little slowing at the dublin interchange as the volume starts to build. and coming down toward 580 out of contra costa county, vasco road, now 26 minutes out of brentwood and down toward the freeway itself. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. happening now. authorities in the east bay, they're trying to find a cause of a deadly crash involving a train. this happened hesperian boulevard. this is near spring lake drive. alameda county fire department says that trainn collided with a motorcycle. a motorcyclist died there at the scene. another person was injured. still unclear what led up to the crash. catholics around the world are praying for the pope.
