prayers for pope francis. the 88 year old pontiff is still in critical condition with kidney failure. we have an update from the vatican on his condition and treatment this morning. waste is pretty much everywhere. people ask, how can you find waste in dc? the clock is ticking for thousands of federal workers. elon musk is demanding to know what they've accomplished last week or face termination. the reason some departments are telling their employees to ignore his request. and all new this morning apple investigating in america the new jobs. the

silicon valley giant is promising to bring in. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. this is monday morning. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. it is monday morning and i'm laura garcia. we're going to see that monday morning commute with mike. a little foggy out there this morning. yeah, a lot foggy in some spots. that's not really used to it. we're seeing that in san jose as well as down to south county, as well as in parts of the coastline into san francisco. a look at palo alto. walnut creek not too bad where temperatures are in the low to mid 50s. and in brentwood we are starting out with some clouds, and at 9:00 the sun starts to peek out a little bit. we'll be in the upper 50s. a milder start this morning and it will be a slightly warmer afternoon, as we are going to be partly to mostly cloudy today as we take a look at our high temperatures back to what we saw yesterday. up to 68 for los gatos and 69 for san

martin, 66 today in concord and 64 for napa. some of us make it into the 70, so we'll talk about that in the forecast coming up now. mike, you're seeing a backup. yeah. bay bridge toll plaza surprise! there we go. the backup form pretty quickly after the metering lights were turned on just after 530. but now we've filled in all lanes and all gaps are now filling in. there's movement, but still you see the slower drive there a little bit coming off of five, 80 and 24 into the maze. also interstate 80 westbound, close to richmond out of el cerrito. typical pattern here. the build holding steady for highway 37. but look how stretched out highway four slowing is coming in through pittsburgh, out of antioch, all the way over into concord and stretching to just shy of 242. we'll see the walnut creek interchange build. no surprises for that part of the east bay. there's where kari is talking about the fog really registering for parts of the south bay. back to you. thank you. mike. well, this morning, many around the world are praying for pope francis as he remains in critical condition. the 88 year old pontiff is suffering from a
6:03 am
number of health issues. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us this morning with more on how the pope is doing what we know so far. good morning to you, marcus and laura. so it is three in the afternoon in rome. and vatican sources say pope francis has had a good morni and a go afternoon. he's eating normally and is in good spirits, though the pope's medical condition is still critical. over the weekend he had an he became anemic and had a transfusion. he developed mild loss of kidney function, which the vatican now says is under control. but he still has that double pneumonia and he is getting forced oxygen, which means doctors are trying to make it less work for him to breathe. doctor natalie azar talked with the today show this morning and says the pope's condition can improve or deteriorate fast. he actually comes to the situation already with some compromised lung function. he did have part of his lung removed as a young adult because of a severe infection, and he has two underlying lung conditions asthma as well as something called bronchiectasis. so he
6:04 am
already has a susceptibility to infection. so when you get something like this on top of already being slightly compromised, you know, i don't know that he's going to bounce back completely to baseline, but he absolutely can turn the corner and get better. now, people did gather to pray for the pope around the world, including at saint joseph's cathedral in san jose, in his hometown of buenos aires in argentina, you can see the pope's image projected onto the obelisk in the city center, and people also gathered from africa, also in rome, in new york, la. now, social media posts put out by pope francis. he thanked everyone for their prayers and the doctors and staff who are helping him. the pope now has been in the hospital for ten days. so the concern is that he could develop, you know, a blood infection because of that double pneumonia. and he's 88, right? exactly. that's tough. but no doubt in the best hands there. yeah. all right. thank you chris. well new at six for you. apple announcing a $500 billion investment in the us over the

next four years. the company overnight outlined plans to help bring a quarter million square foot facility factory there in texas online by next year. apple says that it will also continue to build ai servers and add about 20,000 research and development jobs. the company also plans to purchase firms in the us and continue production on film and tv production projects. well, now our live look at the white house this morning. president trump's administration causing some confusion for about 2.3 million federal employees. thousands laid off or fired over the weekend, including the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, along with senior defense officers from the navy and the air force. today in the bay's jay gray joins us live from washington this morning with a look at these latest cuts that we're talking about and also what could come next. good morning jay. yeah good morning laura a lot of confusion a lot of frustration. the only thing we really know for certain right now is that president trump
6:06 am
continues to be all in on his plan to pare down the federal government. but this morning, the white house does appear to be getting at least a bit of pushback. and it's coming from inside the administration. this morning, millions of federal workers wake up unsure if they'll have a job by the end of the week. president trump, pressing ahead with his aggressive government overhaul, delivering pink slips to employees across at least 18 departments and agencies. we're removing all of the unnecessary, incompetent and corrupt bureaucrats from the federal workforce. around 1600 usaid employees laid off late sunday. a majority of the remaining staff placed on administrative leave. waste is pretty much everywhere. people ask, how can you find waste in like in dc? billionaire elon musk, head of the administration's self-proclaimed department of government of efficiency, emailing millions of federal workers over the weekend, asking them to list five bullet points outlining what they accomplished last week. adding on social media, failure to respond before
6:07 am
midnight tonight will be taken as a resignation. what donald trump is doing is illegal. it's violative of our constitution and it has to be stopped. that message from democrats echoed in weekekendow hall meetings across the country. when are you going to wrest control of the congress back from the executive and stop hurting your constituents? pushback also coming from inside the administration. the fbi, state department, national institutes of health, defense department and nsa telling employees to pause on responding or not respond at all to the proof of performance email. yeah. you know, we shouldd point o other agencies, including health and human services and the centers for medicare and medicaid services, have asked their employees to respond and do so by tonight's deadline. the bureau of prisons, though, laura asking for guidance before advising their employees about how to move forward. right. it's interesting to follow, and there's a lot of people upset about it. thank you jay. in

fact, m maybe youaw or heard about this striking statement over the weekend at yosemite national park. demonstrators hung old glory upside down atop el capitan on saturday. hundreds of spectators were already gathered below to witness the annual firefall spectacular spectacle, which, you know, it happens when the sun illuminates horsetail falls during a brief window. this time of year, people alway flock there. the upside down flag typically represents what is known as a distress flag. demonstrators say they were trying to call attention to the recent firing of about 1000 newly hired national park service workers. it's not clear if the demonstrators were visitors or park employees. let's take a live look across the bay area this morning. you can see it's clearing up out. there was a foggy start for us. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. a little showers coming in here and there. yeah, we've seen some light rain, some drizzle, as well as some patches of fog as this weather system moves across
6:09 am
the bay area. the rest of the week is looking clear, so hopefully we can at least get some measurable rain out of this. but we are looking at very low visibility near the coastline and half moon bay. it's about a half of a mile. we've seen it increasing and decreasing for san jose. so once again fog kind of moves around. it drifts and that may affect your morning commute as you're driving this morning. so allow some extra time to get there. and then once we see the sun peeking out today, our temperatures warm up into the mid to upper 60s. we'll talk about a warming trend in our forecast coming up. mike's been looking around to save you a little money at the gas pump, or at least help you make a little bit of wiser decision. find you some of the deals, the better deals in the south bay, for example. san jose continues with the better prices. 414 is the best we can find today. speedway express on story road at the top of our list right here, next in alameda county. the best price there in that county is 4.29. head to sunol super stop on andrade road in sunol for this middle price, which is the same price as over here in san

francisco. it's filling up for 429 a gallon in s francisco at arco on fell street. you can check for the changes that happened over the weekend in your area. gasbuddy.com onto the roadways. we're looking at a pretty smooth drive right now. a pretty typical pattern with some slowing now through 880 southbound through hayward, out of off the area past 92, slowing once again in toward union city as well. no major surprises for the nimitz in the south bay north. 101 recovers from an earlier disabled vehicle and an earlier fender bender. some fog registering there at the 185 split or merge. depending on which direction you're going, there will be more fog heading down toward coyote creek and in the north bay. we're looking at a smooth drive southbound. those taillights head over toward a little low cloud cover, but the speeds are fine through the north bay and no problems reported for chp. back to you. thanks, mike. the man once known for creating an absolute failed music festival. now taking a second chance. fire two is real. my dream is finally becoming a reality. any takers out there?
6:11 am
coming up, billy mcfarland opens up in an exclusive interview about why this fyre festival will be more fire than a flop. and let's take a look at futures this morning. looks like dow jones looking positive for this monday. we'll keep it going. hopefully we've got a look at your business headlines when we return. plus thousands celebrate black joy in downtown oakland. ahead for you this morning here on today in the bay we're going to have an up

as we take a look at what to expect right now at 613 in mountain view. we are starting out with some clouds and even some fog in spots. we're in the low 50s and the sun peeks out late morning and then again for the afternoon, but really kind of a cloudy day and our temperatures reaching into the mid 60s. tomorrow it's going to be sunny and warmer. we'll talk about our spring like trend this week coming up in a few minutes. and this lower trend continues at the berkeley curve. no mystery there, but we are able to see the backup better. couldn't see that far because of low clouds. there's still low clouds. fog. not so much a factor in this particular spot. the backup is at the bay bridge and we are seeing low clouds scattered throughout our cameras. good morning. wall street is set to open higher as

the markets look to recover from the slide. late last week, with the dow falling 750 points on friday. that was on the back of weaker data on housing, on manufacturing and consumer sentiment and all of this raising worries about the strength of the economy. the dow falling 2.5% for the week. that's its worst performance since october. now the s&p 500 dropping more than 1.5% for the week. and the nasdaq 2.5% now in focus. this week. it's reports on consumer confidence on housing, durable goods, gdp, personal income and spending and inflation. and we also get earnings from ho depot, lowe's and chip giant nvidia. roughly two thirds of americans who grew up with a strong financial education have successfully negotiated raises during their careers. a new bank rate survey finds they were more than one and a half times more likely to succeed in getting a raise, versus those without early exposure to financial education.

sue the main organizer, billy mcfarland, who spent four years in prison for fraud. some of the lasting images, including fema tents for lodging, cheese sandwiches for food when festival goers were promised a luxury music event. in a new exclusive interview with today, he says this time there are some big changes and he's no longer handling the details. there's no musical lineup just yet, but he says one major festival operator is on board, along with legitimate hotel and travel partners and ticketing companies. why do you think those partners agreed to partner with you, given what happened the first time? fyre two really isn't about the past, and it's not really about me. it's about taking the vision, which is strong. the festival will take place in isla mujeres, mexico, may 30th through june 2nd. tickets start at $1,400, and apparently high end tickets are running more than $1 million.
6:18 am
well, coming up on today, find out why mcfarland may never make it to this version of fyre festival. it's ahead at 7:00. right after today in the bay. okay, so from one upcoming festival to one that brought so much joy over the weekend in oakland, this is where thousands of people with a past, present and future of black culture, food, music and more was celebrated. and the beat was popping throughout the weekend. yeah, downtown oakland was alive yesterday. this is for the eighth annual black joy parade. the route ran through broadway and downtown. this is where an all day festival kept that party going. the event featured two stages activities from the activities out there. this was things the entire family could enjoy. more than 200 vendors highlighting black owned businesses, and some people traveled miles to attend. oh my goodness. dallas, texas. oh
6:19 am
yeah. all the way specifically for this. ever been to the parade? no. this is our first time. how do you like it? amazing. it's so fulfilling. it really is. and kari and i had the opportunity to walk the parade route. speaking to all of you folks out there, along with our assignment editor, takina russell. you see right there, alyssa goard was out there with us as well. a fun time to celebrate there in oakland. had a good time too, right? yeah, absolutely. it's always fun. the vibe was really good. it looked like you all took off your sweatshirts. yeah, we. yeah, it got warm. yeah. it did. but there was a lot of dancing involved. so. okay. yes. one more than others, but. yeah. no. all right, so we're getting started. cooler temperatures and also fog. it's been kind of mixing and drizzling in some spots. and we've been watching that moving in on the radar, looking at the cameras and the clouds overhead. it's in the mid 50s right now in walnut creek,
6:20 am
as well as san jose and 54 for palo alto and san francisco. but we're headed for 64 today, so it's going to be another nice one after starting out with some damp conditions, as well as some clouds that will linger throughout the morning. but we're just looking at some peeks of sunshine and our high temperatures up to 68 in dublin and livermore, as well as upper 60s for the south county. but tomorrow, once we get more sunshine, it's going to be a little bit warmer in spots like concord headed for 71 and 71 for san martin. san francisco will be in the mid 60s and then looking at wednesday upper 60s near the coast, as well as low to mid 70s for the interior valleys. we're going to see a big jump in temperatures which will continue throughout the week through friday. in san jose.e're looking at highs in the 70s, but then the weekend it starts to cool off with the first cold front moving in and then rain possible early next week. that will keep those temperatures down into the low 60s. looking at what's ahead. so
6:21 am
we're looking pretty dry throughout the week. high pressure in control. but then things change this weekend as we see that first wave of showers coming through and possibly a bigger storm system arriving by next monday into tuesday. so we are dry for the next several days. once again, we're going to enjoy the big rebound in those temperatures. headed for the mid to upper 70 and some of the inland areas. and then the weekend will be definitely cooler. highs in the low to mid 60s. and even for san francisco it will be in the mid 50s. but that's after seeing highs near 70 midweek. and mike you're taking a look at the nimitz which we can see much more clearly. there's still a glow for the haze in the air, a little moisture there, some low clouds still hanging out, but we couldn't see this far up toward the high street high rise from our coliseum camera across from the coliseum. smooth drive northbound with those tail lights headed southbound. building as you get down through san leandro. there's a little more slowing. and also westbound 80 coming through richmond, slowing in both directions,
6:22 am
showing up toward the toll plaza for 580 at the richmond bridge and coming over from the north bay side from san rafael. we typically have a crew that hits the span as well. about this time. looks like it's going on there. highway four shows some slowing, and now 242 sensors start to change from green to yellow, so we'll see more traffic at the walnut creek interchange. 24 moves smoothly through the caldecott right now, and 680 continues smoothly until about sunol into fremont. southbound slows a bit for that volume, folks joining in with highway 84. the fog registered right here. that shows on our map, but there will be low clouds in patches around the bay. we see it on many of our cameras, so do note that we'll take a quick look at the drive out of contra costa county via vasco road. it's at about 27 minutes, almost a half hour there as folks are getting down toward five, 85, 80 itself. no problems or surprises out of the altamont toward the dublin interchange. back over to you. thanks so much, mike. 622. this morning. are you planning a spring break getaway anytime soon? well ahead for you this morning. chris chmura is going to break down the way you can save on your next hotel booking.

but they're just around the corner. and if you're looking to book a hotel and find some of those expensive resort fees, well. consumer investigator chris chmura says you can actually try to beat them. yeah, you know what? here's how. our first trick is to check your rate. we recently saw a hotel in
6:26 am
honolulu where west coasters could book a special rate that doesn't include a resort fee. the thing is, it wasn't the first rate the hotel's website showed. you had to click more rates and then scroll down to see it. so poke around while booking. pro tip if you already have a reservation, you're not necessarily locked into a rate with a resort fee. many hotel reservations can be revised right up until the week you arrive, so check to see if you can change your rate now to save money on your vacation. second comparison shop for package deals. here's one good example. some warehouse clubs offer members hotel deals that do not have a resort fee. third, see if your company has a negotiated hotel rate. many employers, especially the big ones, brokered deals with the hotel chains. partf that negotiation is nixing resort fees, and sometimes you can use your corporate rate for leisure travel. thanks, boss. fourth, see if your loyalty pays. at least one hotel chain waives resort fees for its top tier
6:27 am
members. we know that's not for everyone, but tip number five is see if using points instead of cash to pay for your stay makes sense. even if you have to buy the points. here's why. many hotels do not charge resort fees when you're redeeming their points. good information there, chris. thank you. 626 right now, coming up next, the top stories we're following for you today, including a tragic weekend in the north bay. multiple students suspected of overdosing on fentanyl. we're live with the new details in this investigation. plus, prayers for the pope. new update from the vatican on his health
6:28 am
i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah.
6:29 am
i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe. [skateboard sounds]

right now at 630, a north bay city shaken after multiple student fentanyl overdoses. two of the cases are deadly. new details overnight on an arrest, and the response students will see when they return to class. a manhunt underway on the peninsula to track down a gunman who ambushed a police officer. the latest on the investigation and how the officer is doing this morning. many of us are looking at our email on a daily basis to where we're anticipating things like this happening all the time. it's not shocking anymore. federal workers with their jobs in limbo. this as elon musk issues a weekend ultimatum to all

government employees. we'll talk with the bay area worker about the fine line he's walking just to keep his job. this is today in the bay. good monday morning to you. 630 right now. thanks for starting your week with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall tracking the fog that we've seen, which for the most part, like i saw last time, it looks like it cleared out for the most part for some parts of the bay area. we're still going to see that fog moving around. and we're also seeing some light rain. and as you step out, it may be a little damp, but this system that's passing by the bay area is going to be fairly weak. and we'll be back to the sunshine before you know it but we are seeing some low visibility near the coast and in half moon bay, as well as the south bay. really dense fog in the south county as well. and then looking at dublin, we can see a little bit of some low visibility there in the distance as you're driving on 580 and we're going to be mostly cloudy up until about
6:32 am
10:00 when the sun starts to peek out and temperatures warming up today headed for the mid 60s. it will feel like spring this week, so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. and mike, we're waiting to get to the bay bridge. yeah a lot of folks are waiting. some folks may have taken off last week. yeah. whoa. look at this slow drive getting down the berkeley curve over toward the bay bridge. that's the wait to get to the wait, folks. once you're at the toll plaza, of course it's full there. slow starting back at el cerrito, now across the richmond bridge. look at 24 off of 680. so right above where it says moraga, coming into that area off of the walnut creek interchange, we're seeing some lower speeds now. we seeing some recovery at the bottom of your screen. south 680 towards sunol. an earlier crash looks like it's to the shoulder. still a distraction. no major issues for the tri-valley. that part of the east bay and the south bay starting to get ready for that second burst of traffic in the next few minutes. back to you. thanks, mike. well, students at two north bay high schools returned to class this morning with heavy hearts after the death of two teenagers. police say involved fentanyl. now, those were just two of a series
6:33 am
of weekend overdoses that happened in the city of santa rosa today in the bay's bob redell joining us from there this morning. and, bob, what are we learning? i mean, this is a heartbreaking situation here. good morning, jim marcus. santa rosa police do not believe that the students who overdosed knew that they were ingesting fentanyl. as you can see behind me here at santa rosa high school, outside their front there, somebody has left flowers, balloons. this is for a 16 year-old girl who attended school here and who is sadly one of the four or current or former students within the santa rosa city school district to have died this weekend, three of whom through drugs. now a friend found the 16 year-old girl and an 18 year-old man saturday night, unresponsive in a bed in a home on brookwood drive. of the 16 year-old, as i mentioned, attended santa rosa high. the 18 year-old went to montgomery high school, which is a couple of miles from here. in a separate case, a 14 year old and 16 year
6:34 am
old girl. they were hospitalized with fentanyl overdoses, and police believe in all cases, the victims believed they were buying cocaine, not fentanyl. it is not yet clear if the cases of the two students who died and in the two other girls are related. yesterday afternoon, police detained a 21 year old man, a suspect who they say possessed materials including small plastic baggies that they are linked to the deadly overdoses. he is the suspected drug dealer. the names of the students who died have not been announced and the investigation ongoing. also, the santa rosa city school district released an email yesterday to parents and students about the deaths of the four students i mentioned earlier. i've already told you about the 16 and 18 year old. the other two deaths involved a former 19 year-old student, also from an overdose but not believed related to this case. and the fourth death was a 21 year old who died from natural causes. the district is promising to have grief counselors on hand when classes

resume this morning here at santa rosa high behind me and montgomery high, a couple of miles away. reporting live here in santa rosa, bob redell, today in the bay. all right. our thoughts are with that whole community today. all right, bob, thank you. 634. hillsborough leaders plan to keep the town hall closed indefinitely as the manhunt continues for a gunman who shot and injured a police officer. it happened saturday afternoon when the officer was ambushed in the police department parking lot. it triggered a lengthy shelter in place as teams searched for the shooter, who they now believe targeted the officer. police say the injured officer returned fire, but the shooter ran from the scene. officers eventually located a person of interest who was not arrested. the officer is expected to recover. an emergency preparedness session planned for tonight at hillsborough town hall is now canceled. pope francis remains in critical condition this morning as he receives treatment for double pneumonia and suffering mild kidney problems.
6:36 am
vatican sources say the pontiff woke up overnight, is said to be in good spirits while sleeping and resting. he participated in a holy mass on sunday with those caring for him. catholics around the u.s. are praying for his recovery, including those here in the bay area. at yesterday's mass at saint joseph's cathedral in san jose, many say they hope the pope will have a speedy recovery. we keep the pope in our prayers all the time, especially right now. so specifically this sunday we here at the temple so we can pray for our pope. he is a good pope and helps a lot to the entire world to spread the catholic religion. in a social media post yesterday, pope francis thanked everyone for their prayers and doctors and staff who are helping him. the trump administration is moving forward with the firing of 1600 united states agency for international development workers. in addition, all but a fraction of the agency's employees are being
6:37 am
placed on administrative leave. as of this morning, it comes after a federal judge last week rejected a lawsuit seeking to block the firing. administration says that workers who were put on leave overseas are expected to receive voluntary agency funded return travel and other benefits. now, this comes as hundreds of thousands of federal workers face a deadline. elon musk wants them to outline five accomplishments that they've achieved in their roles by the end of the night that they've achieved in the last week, and if they refuse, they could lose their jobs. today, in the bay's alyssa goard sat down exclusively with one federal worker who is trying to figure out what to do. saturday afternoon, this federal government employee and bay area resident saw an email in his work mailbox with the subject line, what did you do last week? he was asked to send in five things he accomplished with a deadline of monday night. many of us are looking at our email on a daily basis because we're we're anticipating things like
6:38 am
this happening all the time. it's not that shocking anymore. this employee asked us not to show his face or use his real name for fear of retaliation. we've also distorted his voice to protect his identity. we'll call him james. he wasn't the only one who got the email saturday. elon musk posted on x saying the message was sent to all federal employees, and failure to respond will be taken as a resignation. the other part that really bothered me was, who's going to read these and to qualify that what i did justifies me having my job. james has survived the recent rounds of layoffs for federal workers, as musk and the department of government efficiency seek to cut the federal spending. james has been in his current role for 11 months, so he's still a probationary employee, something employment attorney michael bernick says puts his job more at risk. yes, there are quick actions being taken. some of them will result in layoffs, particularly with probationary
6:39 am
workers and contractors. but it also be a process that will be slowed somewhat as these issues work their way through the courts. bernick points out not all federal agencies seem aligned about this latest directive. the department of defense told employees to pause responding to the email. nbc news reports employees at the fbi, the state department, the national institutes of health and the nsa got similar messages. i think given what we've seen on the pushback, this particular email will have little or no impact. still, the deadline is looming. james drafted a response to the email, but says he's holding off sending it at the request of his union. in the long term, he's worried his department and others will lose institutional knowledge and valuable staff. there are people behind these jobs. there are people in the community. there are the friends, family, neighbors. they're not just faceless people pushing paper around, collecting paychecks in washington, d.c. they're all around the united states. alyssa goard. today in

costco, are limiting egg purchases. producers are blaming it on the bird flu. they say they are forced to euthanize millions of chickens. they also say they need quick and accurate testing, which is where the looming strike can hit producers even more, costing them tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. now, this has become a timely opportunity for companies offering egg alternatives. we recently visited the headquarters of just eggs in alameda. we spoke to eat just ceo and co-founder josh tetrick, who tells us he saw an opportunity years ago to disrupt an industry which produced 2 2 trlion eggs a year worldwide. now, after about six years of experimenting and millilions of dollars later, they found their alternative in the mung bean. it's a green bean that has been around for centuries. now that little bean has sprouted big for tetrick and just egg that has sold over 500 million eggs since its launch. so we put the mung bean to the test, with chef
