we'll have more on that in just a few moments. >> that's fun. let's begin with this new confusion across federal agencies. elon musk has extended the overnight deadline for government employees to list their activities to him. >> calling it a second chance, musk says any failure to respond this time will, quote, result in termination. as for president trump, he praised the efforts yesterday, even as more departments told workers to ignore the directive. >> the department of health and human services going even farther, telling anyone who responds, should, quote, assume a that what you write will be read by malign foreign actors. >> we have two reports from washington starting with nbc's chief capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles. ryan, good morning to you. >> craig, good morning. even this morning federal workers do not have clear guidance as to how to respond to an email requiring they list their recent accomplishments or face losing their jobs. one republican senator told me this tactic is nothing but intimidation. this morning, government workers

are waking up with a new directive from president trump and elon musk. after a day of mass confusion. overnight, the deadline passing from that weekend e-mail sent by the office of personnel management at musk's instruction, asking for them to list five things they have accomplished or face termination. some government agency leaders including trump's allies telling their staff they shouldn't answer. other departments telling employees to respond but not to reveal classified information, while trump praised musk's actions. >> there is a lot of genius in sending it. >> reporter: the office tla sent that email following up monday to say it's voluntary but then a new order giving employees more time but making it clear they better comply. failure to respond a second time will result in termination. musk posted on his platform x. senator lisa murkowski a republican from alaska, a state with a significant number of federal workers, said the e-mail was intimidating employees.

>> there is a way to do this that is proper, that is lawful and also treats our federal employees with a little bit of dignity. >> reporter: it comes as some republicans are facing backlash at town halls over musk and his department's cuts. a congressman in missouri defending musk yesterday. >> whether you like it or not, elon musk does have a security clearance. >> reporter: he later said the overflowed crowd included organized protesters. the cuts coming as trump is making a controversial move at the fbi. appointing dan bongino, a former police officer and secret service officer with no experience at the fbi, as the deputy director of the agency. normally reserved for career agent. bongino has used his conservative media platform to peddle conspiracy theories, falsely cast doubt on the 2020 election results and attk the fbi saying it needs to be disbanded. and bongino's appointment as

deputy director was a shock to the rank and file agents at the fbi. the fbi agent's association circulated a memo to their work force that revealed that the new director kash patel promised to appoint a career agent to the post. meanwhile, bongino promised to help, quote, reestablish faith in the institution. craig? >> ryan nobles starting us off in washington. ryan, thank you. now the president's push to end the war in ukraine as it enters a fourth year today. the president suggesting a deal could soon be reached. but the approach he's taking with ukraine and russia is putting the country at odds with its key european allies. nbc's white house chief correspondent peter alexander on this one. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the third anniversary of russia's invasion of ukraine has come and gone. but it did deepen the divide between the u.s. and its allies over the war. french president emanuel macron here today emphasizing a peace deal will not mean a surrender of ukraine. and at one point even contradicting president trump

while trump refused to call vladimir putin a dictator and largely focussed on recouping billions of dollars in u.s. aid to ukraine. russia's invasion of ukraine now beginning its fourth year as president trump pushes for an agreement between the two sides. >> a lot of good things toward peace are happening. >> reporter: but even as the president shared hugs and handshakes with french president emmanuel macron yesterday, the divide is growing between the u.s. and its key allies over support for ukraine, as the president appears focus on terms favorable to russia. >> one of the first calls i made was with president putin, and we were treated with great respect and they want to -- they want to end this war. >> reporter: in just the last week, president trump has made a series of false assertions, blaming ukraine for starting the war and criticizing ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy as a dictator, yesterday declining to say the same about vladimir putin. >> i don't use those words lightly. i think we will see how it all

works out. >> reporter: macron's visit comes as the u.s. voted against resolution condemning aggression. the u.s. siding not with you europe or most of its allies but russia, rth korea and iran among others. nonetheless, the resolution passed. president trump says the u.s. and ukraine are closing in on a deal that would give washington a share of ukraine's resources to pay back the u.s. for military aid, even saying volodymyr zelenskyy, who so far rejected any deal, may come to the u.s. in the next couple weeks to sign it. in the oval office, macron corrected president trump after rewrongly said europe's support to ukraine was alone. >> europe is loaning the money to ukraine. they get their money back. >> no, in fact, to be frank, we paid. >> reporter: macron later telling fox news regarding negotiations with russia that a truce in the next few weeks is, quote, feasible. but adding his message to president trump was simple -- >> my message was to say be

careful because we need something substantial for ukraine. >> reporter: as the u.s. and its allies evade best ways toward a peaceful solution, russia is not only continuing its bombardment of ukraine, but intensifying it. last night alone, ukraine says it shot down six russian guided missiles in more than 130 attack drones. savannah? >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you, peter. also this morning, we're learning more about yet another alarming incident for the airline industry. this time on a flight from atlanta to columbia, south carolina, a delta flight forced to turn around and make an emergency landing after smoke filled the cabin. nbc's priya sridhar joins us from hartfield jackson airport in atlanta. good morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. this is just the latest in a series of incidents that delta and other airlines have had to respond to over the last week. the good news in this case is that all of the passengers who were on that airplane that was diverted back here to atlanta are safe.

passengers say it happened shortly after takeoff on delta flight 876 from atlanta to south carolina. >> breathe through your clothes. >> reporter: smoky air filling the cabin as concerned passengers covered their faces. the boeing 717 was only in the air for a few minutes, looping back around for an emergency landing around 9:00 a.m. >> we are going to evacuate the plane. >> reporter: the crew deploying slides for passengers to exit the plane. >> this is where we are. >> reporter: kristin morris was among the 94 passengers onboard. >> people were on the plane saying smoke, smoke, smoke, you know, yelling. i guess the flight attendant said, guys, we're aware it's smoking. we're trying to get in touch with the pilot. >> reporter: delta says two people received medical attention, adding in a statement the flight crew followed procedures to return to atlanta when a haze inside the aircraft was observed after departure. nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people.

as scary as it looks, john cox nbc aviation analyst, says it was likely not a life-threatening situation. >> this is likely an air-conditioning or pressurization issue, and that would not have these people in danger at all. >> reporter: a similar situation reported saturday night on a sydney-bound delta flight out of l.a.x. the plane returning to land safely shortly after takeoff. >> they're having smoke and fumes issues on the aircraft. >> reporter: the faa said it would investigate both of the and that plane incidents. and that plane was up in the air for about 35 minutes before it made its way back here to atlanta. a spokesperson for delta said that the incident had a moderate impact on airport operations. craig? >> all right. priya sridhar in atlanta for us. priya, thank you. there was an emotional scene at the vatican overnight. thousands gathered in st. peters square to pray for the pope who remains hospitalized this morning in critical condition. the vatican says the 88-year-old's health is showing slight improvement this morning.

i want to get right to nbc's anne thompson is at the vatican for us. hi, anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the latest is that pope francis is awake, moving around in his hospital room and receiving treatment. this on top of the news that you mentioned that the 88-year-old is showing signs of improvement in what is now the longest hospital stay of his papacy. this morning pope francis is up, and a vatican source says out of bed after a full night of rest. though, he remains in critical condition with double pneumonia, the vatican says the pope was able to do some work monday. including his nightly call to the catholic church in gaza. he also met with his secretary of state. fuelling the cautious optimism this morning, doctors say francis' mild kidney failure is no longer a concern. while he continues to get supplemental oxygen, the levels are reduced. prayers for the pontiff intensifying.

in st. peter's square, the cardinals of rome led the first nightly rosary for the pope. in the crowd minnesota college student sara schmidt and kellen auty. >> he's in poor health right now, and we want to do our part and give strength to him spiritually. >> coming together with a lot of other people who are here to do the same thing, so i feel like it's more powerful. >> reporter:? in his native buenos aires, a mass for the recovery of the pope. >> at the white house, president trump and french president macron, sending francis good wishes. >> he's in a very serious situation. we want him to dwell. >> reporter: outside the rome hospital, a vigil for francis. no prognosis from the doctors this morning, but these people have faith. now, the doctors say this is still a complex situation. while the pope has had no incidents of respiratory attacks

actually in full effect. >> reporter: prices continue to soar to record highs. >> sometimes we go shopping and don't come back with any eggs because there aren't any. >> reporter: according to the usda a dozen large eggs will run you more than $8 on average, up 4% from earlier this month. the crisis tied to rampant cases of the bird flu, spreading through flocks nationwide. >> the value menu is back for a limited time. >> reporter: denny's now joining the food fight, confirming that some of their restaurants will temporarily add a surcharge to every meal that includes eggs, calling the move a fluid situation, joining other breakfast staples like waffle house. >> the biggest thing to understand is it is a temporary thing. if you raise price, you generally raise prices permanently. if they're putting a surcharge in, eventually they're planning to take it out, in theory. >> reporter: at the supermarket, when you can find the cartens, some stores are limiting the amount customers can buy at any one time. to make my cake bakery in harlem, new york, the owner has

a look at our top stories, including bay area school districts weighing some painful decisions. i'm bob redell. the san francisco board of education tonight will vote to finalize and authorize the preliminanary layoff notices for 559 employees, which represents about 6% of the 9000 people who roughly work for san francisco unified. of those being considered for layoffs, 395 are teachers. the remainder are office workers, custodians and bus drivers. the board will also consider preliminary layoff notices in the coming months for another 129 employees who work in the central office. the school district says it needs to make these cuts to make up for a $113 million budget deficit for the next year. san jose today takes a controversial new step in trying to solve its homeless crisis. mayor matt mahan is expected to unveil his homeward bound pilot program. it seeks to house people by reconnecting them with their friends,

as you said, he was one of the good ones, a true gentlemen. hill said he was honored to have a front row seat to history. but he also struggled with tremendous guilt that he was not able to save president kennedy. he spoke to us often about his blessings and his burdens, his place in american history and the legacy he hoped to leave behind. november 22nd, 1963, a day forever etched in our collective memories. but especially for secret service agent clint hill. hill was trailing a limousine in the presidential motorcade on that november day in dallas, texas, as the agent assigned to first lady jacqulynn kennedy. when shots were fired, hill famously jumped on the back of the limo in a desperate attempt to protect the president and mrs. kennedy. >> it must have been a shocking scene to behold. >> it was horrible. >> reporter: one of the last-living witnesses. even decades later, he could recount every detail of that fateful day, re-living the day

with savannah. on the 50th anniversary of the assassination. >> as we got down here a little bit farther, there was a loud explosive noise that came over my right shoulder. and i knew something was wrong, so i jumped off my position on the golf cart, ran toward the presidential vehicle. there was a third shot, and it hit the president in the head. >> you knew in that moment, this is a fatal. >> that was my assumption, that it was a fatal shot. >> reporter: that moment would haunt him for the rest of his life. he famously reexpressed his regrets on "60 minutes" in 1965. >> if i had reacted just a little bit quicker, then i could have, i guess. and i'll live with that to my grave. >> reporter: still thinking about it years later. >> 50 years later, and i still have that image in my mind. >> and you carry this place with you, i guess, the rest of your life? >> yes, i do. it is just one thing i will

about the god that i know that loves you so much, that you will carry him in your heart just the way i have all my life and that that will always be with you. >> god's love is like blades of grass, always growing, always reaching. >> in a chapter of your book "like a mother," this is your adult book, it's one of my favorite chapters of your book. you talk about how a mother's love for her child is the closest we could get to understanding how god feels about us, his children. if you were going to talk to a younger child reading your book, how would you explain that metaphor? >> for parents, for grown-up, we understand how much we love our kids. we have that perspective. and when we think about that and then we imagine, wow, that's how god could feel about me. but when you are a kid, you don't know yet what it is like to be a parent. you just know what it is like to be a child. i think what i say is the metaphor works both ways. i hope there are those moments

>> explain it for folks that are not familiar with it. >> i'm just an actor. again, you have these commercial divers that go on the bottom of the ocean, on the bottom of the sea. in order to work at that depth, you have to live in a pressurized chamber on board a ship for typically rotations are 28 days at a time. for 28 days, you are living in a little tin can. you are sleeping basically on top of each other. you have no privacy and no space to yourself. you are going to the bathroom two feet away from where you are sleeping. i swear to god, all the saturation divers we all talked to in preparation for the movie, for the role, they will all tell you the same thing, they love it. so it does take a specific kind of person to do it. >> one of the guys that is based on, i understand you spent some time with him. >> yeah, that's right. dave was able to come by when we were prepping for the movie shoot. and it was just a really -- it is always really incredible when you get to spend time with the real life person that you are portraying. he is a singular and such a

compelling person. >> had you done any scuba diving before this? >> yeah. when we all think about scuba diving, we think about a nice, sunny beach somewhere. sea turtles. you have the sunlight coming through. but like this is such a different type of diving. you are so deep you barely have any visibility. it is not a glamorous life at all. >> how did they recreate that set? what was that like? >> yeah, it was really cool. we shot in the film studios. they have this 40 foot tank deep they filled with water from the sea, from the mediterranean. we built a giant manifold structure the one that you see right there. and we basically -- we had incredible dive instructors that trained myself and fin cole, the other diver in the movie over the course of many weeks to get us as close to the level of professional as possible. and then we went down there and did the damn thing. it is the best part of our jobs, that we get to come on for these

projects and for a few months of our lives, we get to completely immerse yourselves in these different worlds. w. dyeing is a special skill you acquired. a little birdie told me among your special skills, you're an accountant. >> oh, yeah. >> tax season is upon us. do you get friends that try to hit you up for free tax advice? >> yeah, i do, which is always weird because i went to school for accounting, and i spent like eight months working as one and then i got fired. i'm like, yeah, if you want to go for jail for tax fraud, you can absolutely have me do your taxes. i would be happy to. however, they will not be done correctly. >> it's clearly worked out well for you. out of curiosity, how did you get fired after eight months? >> that's a really great question. i answered an ad to be an extra and turned my phone off. i turned my phone back on during the day and i had like 42 missed calls, which was crazy.

the sun for months. there's no warmth in our life. we're getting warmth from the cookies we make in the oven. this is a super easy mixture of butter and brown sugar. mix this up. >> this is a cinnamon roll cookie. >> it's a cinnamon roll cookie. >> this goes in here? >> is that goes in there. >> where did you find that one egg? that amazing. there are no eggs. >> the recipe calls for four eggs. >> i know. then vanilla and we have a mixture of our dry ingredients. flour, baking soda and salt. >> pro tip is light brown sugar? >> gives a nice bite. all white sugar, it would be crunchie. we want a chill. >> can i ask a dumb question. there's light brown sugar and dark brown sugar most recipes don't specify one or the other. >> it should. if it doesn't specify, i go for light brown. >> thank you. >> basically the difference is there's more molasses in dark.

>> so you got that going here. basically this will be our dough. one bowl, we're done. comes over here. roll it out into this nice sort of paper shape. then over here, we're going to put together more light brown sugar and this will become our cinnamon sugar filling to give it the nice cinnamon roll vibe. >> this is another pro tip. brown sugar and butter. >> even more cinnamon. we want that cinnamon to shine through. we'll mix that all together and basically what it ends up as is this nice cinnamon roll filling just like in a regular cinnamon roll. >> when is this done? how do you know? does it look done. >> that looks great. you're good. i feel like as soon as it's mixed you want to call it. >> all right. >> but that's also because you don't want the glutens to form too much. as soon as you add flour to something -- >> this is the cinnamon filling. could you freeze this every time you want a cookie grab it. >> meal prepping your desserts. i love that. put that there. roll it into the log here. this is where the magic happens,

morning. it is 856. i'm marcus washington as santa rosa mourns the tragic fentanyl overdose deaths of two teenagers. the suspected drug dealer will reportedly face a judge for the first time this morning. this is all according to the press democrat. one of those victims, gia walsh, attended santa rosa high school. her boyfriend, who also died, went to nearby montgomery high school. two other teenage girls, ages 14 and 16, also overdosed on fentanyl over the weekend and survived. investigators are not ruling out a possibility the cases are linked, but they do say all of those victims believed they were ingesting cocaine. well, in san jose, one of five teenagers
