temperatures in the low 50s. and then as we go throughout the day, headed back to the mid to upper 70s. we may even just briefly touch 81 degrees here in the south bay and upper 70s and low 80s for the south county. meanwhile, in the tri-valley, we're looking at a high of 75 in dublin and 75 in napa, san francisco today, 73 degrees as we take it into the day friday, a drop in temperatures for a lot of us as we'll be in the upper 60s and low 70s. and then it continues to cool off into the weekend. mike has a look at the peninsula for highway 101. yeah, we're starting in palo alto with a look showing you northbound how light the traffic is actually in both directions. tail light is going to head past the embarcadero exit. we're on the shoulder. reports of a smoking vehicle, maybe a food truck. that might be not a breakfast option for some folks this morning. no injuries reported, and i'm tracking that it's out of lanes. this should be getting out of lanes, but there may be a traffic break. westbound highway four approaching lone tree way getting through antioch. the

disabled vehicle needs to be moved from the center. divide will track that because we typically see early slowing. start over there anyway. no problems through concord north bay highway 37 and bay bridge toll plaza also clear. back to you. thank you very much, mike. breaking overnight, a hollywood legend has been found dead in his new mexico home, along with his wife and dog. all right. popeye's here. actor gene hackman has died at the age of 95. his role as popeye doyle in the 1971 film the french connection won him the best actor oscar. more than a decade later, he won best supporting actor for his role in unforgiven. some of his other classic films include hoosiers, the firm, and young frankenstein. police say hackman and his wife, classical pianist betsy arakawa, were discovered inside their santa fe residence. their deaths are still under investigation, but foul play is nott suspected. another key ally head to the white house today to meet with president trump. this

comes a day after the president held his cabinet meeting, the first one of his second term. today in the bay's alice barr joining us live from washington this morning. and alice, it was one of the non members of that cabinet that actually took center stage during that meeting. marcus of course we're talking about elon musk. and he was not physically center stage. he does not have a seat at the cabinet table because of course he's not a cabinet member. but he still loomed over the meeting. president trump went to him first, and he spoke at length about his efforts to slash federal spending with the president backing the spending and workforce cuts. president trump hosting the uk prime minister today at the white house, says a battle over foreign aid reached the supreme court overnight. chief justice john roberts temporarily blocked a lower court's midnight deadline for the trump administration to release $2 billion in funds frozen since january. foreign aid groups had sued to continue their work and pay already due vendors. the

supreme court weighing next steps, asking both sides for more information by tomorrow. we put together a great cabinet in president trump's first cabinet meeting wednesday. cuts to usaid took center stage along with elon musk, who with usaid. one of the things we accidentally canceled very briefly was ebola. ebola prevention. i think we all want ebola prevention. so we restored the ebola prevention immediately, and there was no interruption. what elon musk said today was just categorically untrue. doctor craig spencer, who survived ebola in 2014, tracks outbreaks around the world and says people who would normally set up border screening to do the contact tracing on the ground, they're not getting paid. president trump defended deep spending cuts as nbc news obtained a new budget office memo, giving agency heads two weeks to submit plans for mass layoffs. we're cutting down the size of government. we have to. we're bloated. we're sloppy. the

president and musk again, defending that email, directing federal employees to list what they did last week, warning that employees who have not yet replied may still be fired, even as some cabinet members at the table had initially told employees not to respond. and musk described those emails as a pulse check. he said if an employees work is too ssitive to describe in an email, they can say that. that as president trump signed a new executive order further strengthening the department of government powers and, among other things, mandating that government credit cards, with some exceptions, be frozen for 30 days. marcus. very interesting. alex, before you go, i know you mentioned uk prime minister will be at the white house today. do we know the focus of that meeting? so prime minister keir starmer is going to meet with president trump. he's the second european leader just this week to come. and they're trying to warm up relations with the president because there's been some friction certainly since he came into office in these very long
5:07 am
term alliances. keir starmer is planning to speak about strengthening business relations, economic relations that is, between the us and the uk, and to really hone in on that special relationship between these two countries. but the backdrop is that he, like french president emmanuel macron before him, are trying to get president trump to kind of shift his view on ukraine and making sure that they're on that. the u.s. is on the european side and on ukraine's side in providing some kind of long term security guarantees for a lasting peace. once, presumably, this war is wound down. we have seen the trump administration begin negotiations with russia to end its war of aggression on ukraine. and ukraine's president is due at the white house tomorrow. so it's this moment of trying to make sure that ukraine is centered in whatever deal comes to be. marcus. yeah, i'm sure that meeting very important. the uk, certainly a strong european ly for us. all right, alex, thank you.

back. generally speaking, we need people to walk in gia vang for today in the bay. all right. taking a break from the day's news and taking a live look outside, waiting for the sun's arrival over san jose. everybody talking about what a great afternoon it was yesterday. a little touch of spring. kari. yes. and that continues today, even though we're starting out cool. we are going back to some of the same temperatures we saw yesterday, but this will be the last day of feeling those mid to upper 70s and even 81 for san jose, 80 in gilroy and 73 for san francisco. look at what happens tomorrow. we start to see the numbers coming down, but still pretty comfortable for the most part. and looking at some mild weather that's still above normal. but then on saturday, well, look at that. we're staying in the 60s and only 64 for napa oakland, as well as 62 in san francisco and 68 in san jose. and mike, you're tracking a crash. what's going on? yeah, well, on palo alto, first we had that food truck reported on fire or perhaps smoking there at the

embarcadero area. that's clear from the roadway in palo alto, and no slowing shows up. but i want to take you to 101 farther north. there may be a crash southbound 101 right around sierra point parkway. you see the slower sensors there, maybe one lane blocked. as crews arrive. we'll track that heading south out of san francisco, through brisbane and then continuing dowown the peninsula without any delay, coming across the golden gate bridge. the overnight roadwork and lane restrictions have all cleared. that's great news. tonight you'll be down to just one lane southbound. i'll remind you about that again starting at 9 p.m, but i'll remind you later in the show. back to you. looking forward to it. thanks, mike. we're going to need that reminder. okay. instagram users reeling after the reels were flooded with graphic content just ahead on today in the bay. the response this morning from parent company meta. plus, oakland in the spotlight, the new film featuring town as a backdrop of where you can watch this premiere today. much more ahead for you this morning right

we are heading out 14 minutes past the hour. as you're driving from antioch, it's going to be nice and cool. a few clouds. temperatures in the mid 40s, and we are going to see some high clouds moving in today, but overall still mostly sunny and temperatures warming up. back to the 70 again today. but we are looking at a major cool down for the weekend. even some rain on the way. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. and we're looking at a live look.

5:19 am
of oakland as a backdrop. we really wanted to showcase her story in a way that people wouldn't just look at the fabulous life and the luxury and the celebrities and all of that. they would be able to look at her story and say, wow, this is really relatable because she has gone through all of these things that so many of us have struggled with. and she's transgender. my family is there. my people are there. i love oakland, and i just want everyone to be proud, to be proud of the project. dyllon burnside plays the role of curry. he played the role of ricky in the hit series pose, and veteran actor d.b. woodside plays the role as curry's uncle, who actually helped guide dwae to self-acceptance. so that movie comes out. i did be able i was able to actually go to the premiere. i saw dwayne come in

5:21 am
pleasanton up to 75 degrees, 78 in hayward and even near the coast, it's pretty warm with half moon bay high. at 73, it will be 79. in palo alto and san francisco, 73 downtown for the north bay, 76 degrees in sonoma and 77 in santa rosa. all right. well, we do have a cold front on the way. it initially won't bring us any rain for the bay area. just a very slight chance. but you c see the swirl of the clouds that's just off the coast. that willl eventuay create a mostly cloudy day. and then looking at the weekend, the next storm system comes in after that cold front has already moved in, so that's going to produce some snow for the sierra and some rain for the bay area with chilly temperatures. and then there's more waves of rain coming in behind that. but we're not seeing any really strong storms, so the rain that we get will be fairly light, most of us getting about a 10th to quarter inch of rainfall. there may be a few spots getting a little bit more. while the sierra is going to get a decent amount of snow
5:22 am
this weekend, about two to possibly eight inches, and then looking ahead to some much cooler temperatures after hitting 77 today. next wednesday it will only be 58 degrees. all right. now mike, you have a new crash affecting the tri-valley. it's leaving the tri-valley heading south toward silicon valley. 680 is slowing right here. there's a crash reportedly involving two big rigs. one that was on the shoulder and the other one that may have hit that rig on the shoulder. no injuries are reported, but there may be as many as three lanes blocked. your right lanes heading south from the merge off of 84. so that's when the traffic builds a bit out of pleasanton, down toward fremont again around andrade. see the slowing already? that will be a problem for that portion of folks leaving the tri-valley. we'll watch to see if you have to reroute. we still have slowing. south. 101 sierra point parkway. i think they've cleared that crash shortly a short time ago. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, spring right around the corner next here on today in the bay, we're going to explain

in today's climate. in crisis. meteorological spring begins this weekend. saturday marks the day when temperatures on average begin to rise. as the days get longer, and march 20th is astronomical spring, when the sun's most direct rays pass over the equator. and scientists are finding that, like all other seasons, spring is getting warmer and warmer. climate central analyzed 55 years of temperature data and found that meteorological spring has warmed across the u.s. from 1970 to 2024, and the spring season has warmed in 234, basically, 9,497% of the cities analyzed. and that's warmed by 2.4 degrees on average. unusually warm spring days in san francisco happen more often, and four out of every five cities now experience at least one more week of warmer than normal spring days than in
5:27 am
the 1970s. spring has warmed the most across the southern tier of the country, particularly in the southwest, and spring warming can prolong seasonal allergies, worsen the wildfire risk, as well as limit snow fed water supplies for san francisco. it's now 2.7 degrees warmer, with about 20 days above normal. with warmer days are sometimes a pleasant change to an otherwise chilly weather, but we are seeing less of a winter season. to see more stories of how climate change is affecting the bay area, as well as solutions. go to our website nbcbayarea.com and click on the climate crisis tab. thanks, gary. 526 right now, coming up next, the top stories we're following for you today, including helping to prevent crime, the community memeeting, one south bay police department is holding to try to help deter crime. and one thing that helps deter crime is lighting. and in morgan hill, there's a little less of it now

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%.
5:30 am
that's something i want to believe. [skateboard sounds] now at 530 behind bars this morning. we're live with more on the two arrests. police in morgan hill, morgan hill have made after copper wire was stolen from street lights, leaving one neighborhood in the dark. thousands of dollars of damage the city is now facing.

5:32 am
livermore. and it's going to be well above what's normal, what we typically see for this time in february, tomorrow is also very nice and mild, but we'll start to see some more clouds coming in, and that will set the stage for some rain that will arrive late on saturday with highs in the mid to upper 60s. mike now you may have a traffic alert. yes, chp may categorize that as an alert. i'm alerting you to the slowdown. you're not usually seeing south 101 in towards south san francisco at sierra point parkway. reports of an earlier crash i told you about more detail. there may be a fuel leak, so that may be additional cleanup time. we already see the slowdown. heading south past candlestick 280 is very clear. if that's an option for you, take that easy option for folks traveling through the area. as we look at the rest of the bay, we're looking at another crash in sunol. we'll talk about that coming up near andre, involving two rigs and a possible traffic break coming up. back to you. thanks, mike. two men accused of leaving parts of the south bay in the dark are under arrest. morgan hill police fear the copper wire thefts, though, could be more widespread today
5:33 am
in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live from morgan hill this morning. okay, so what should people watch out for here, chris? well, they should watch out for dark stretches of road here. and when the thieves steal the copper wire from light poles, the damage is visible. sometimes they dig at the base of those light poles. sometimes they remove the concrete covers. and then there's this, the really obvious sign, which is neighborhoods in the dark. and it happened last weekend, as well as on tuesday. and on tuesday, morgan hill police busted two suspects in the act. police say they saw two men tampering with a light pole power box here on butterfield boulevard. and while they fled the scene, they were taken into custody not long after. the damage is estimated at $20,000. and morgan hill police are asking the public to watch for suspicious activity, like maintenance work really late at night or really early in the morning, especially around light poles or power supply units. police say the thieves are
5:34 am
trying to look legitimate. they are wearing proper work vests and uniforms. they have work trucks. but if you don't see a city of morgan hill logo or one four cal west, which is the contractor that the city works with, you should call morgan hill police. now. the thefts cut power, creating public safety concerns, of course, in the dark and also create very expxpensive repairs for the city. so if you see any suspicious activity, call morgan hill police in morgan hill, kris sanchez today in the bay. be extra careful once it's dark out there. all right chris, thanks for that. tens of thousands of uc health workers are back on the picket lines for day two of a strike. they represent researchers, lab technicians, patient care, among some other roles. today, the ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco this morning. so, ginger, tell us a little bit more about the scope of what these workers do and how this potentially could impact the community. yeah. good morning laura. you're right. we're seeing some of those tens of thousands of workers within
