it seems very mysterious what happened. >> there was a press conference this afternoon with santa fe new mexico authorities and it looks as though a maintenance worker went to the home yesterday perhaps to do pest control. they have a sprawling treatment hundred dollar estate, it is a gated community and it appears that one of the doors was open, two of the family dogs were roaming the property but they did find one deceased in a closet, gene hackman's wife in a bathroom. there were some prescription pills nearby and gene hackman was found with a cane next to him in the mud room. i do want to play a little bit of the 911 call that we played yesterday.>> dam. >> are they breathing? >> i have no idea. it is locked. i can't go in but i see them and she is laying down from the window. >> are they moving at all?

hosting british prime minister today. the had a variety of topics to discuss but the ongoing seas talks to end russia's war in ukraine. attributing buildings s to ukrae since the war started over three years ago. meagan fitzgerald joins us now. what do we hear from both of the leaders about the progress that might be made on peace talks for ukraine and russia? >> yeah, so we saw about an hour ago which certainly felt like a press conference before the two leaders stepped into discussion, president trump thing he believes the two countries will get along well discuss. pics they are set to of course, the big question here is whether trump will agree to a u.s.-backed for ukraine. president trump was asked by reporters in the room about it and he said he will be speaking with president zalewski tomorrow and they will be signing an agreement, the rare earth minerals deal and that the deal will get the u.s.

ago, guys. and alleged serial killer has been charged with six murders in chicago when he was a teenager. the suspect is now 21 years old and prosecutors say there was no indication that he knew any of the victims of war shooting and killing them back in 2020. we have been tracking this one. shaquille brewster, what are police saying about the suspect and how are they connecting him with these murders? >> the department says the detectives worked tirelessly and this is the result of several years of investigatory work. the suspect, 21-year-old antonio reyes, he has been behind bars since december of 2020 for the killing of a man in june of that same year. investigators say they have recovered a weapon in investigating that shooting and prosecutors saw similar casings to other shooting incidents that had five other victims. you are talking about people going about their daily lives,

going to a gas station to pick up a soda and in one case, a dad trying to get a pet for his children. chicago's top cop essentially says the investigation for these killings is over. he did say there is more work for the department to do. listen. >> we save lives and who knows how many he may have been responsible for. we will continue to look into this. it is not ordinary that we see an individual like this. but when we do, we must take swift action. >> they also say that reyes had an existential social media footprint and that helped them connect him to some of the shootings as well as audio evidence and tips they say came in from the community, guys. >> he pled not guilty at his arraignment on tuesday so what are the next steps now?>> we

expect to see him back in court on march 18th and he is also facing additional charges for tryingng to ki, they say, his cellmate while in jail. now we don't know what his defense will be to the string of murders but if you go back to 2020, some of those court notes reflect that his defense attorney essentially said that there was no video showing the face of the shooter and that there were no direct witnesses and that a picture he had on social media of a weapon, there was no way to physically connect that to a weapon that was used in that shooting going back to june of 2020 but we will see what defense if any comes from this. many of these victims families now five years later nearly saying this is a long day coming. you have one father of a victim saying it is a bitter street suite moment for him. >> weekly jobless claims are up and if you are used to scrolling through reels on instagram, that could change. angelica peebles with the cnbc

angeles district attorney took a more critical view casting doubt on new evidence they say backs up their claims of abuse. >> is this credible evidence? we argue in many ways that it is not. >> reporter: but the da needs to weigh him soon on their third pastor freedom, resentencing which he tells us will take a broader view of the case. >> what are you looking at to make the decision in resentencing? >> we are going to look at everything, trial evidence, rehabilitation. >> reporter: liz kreutz, nbc news. necases have been reported of measles in morris states. according to the cdc, three cases have been reported in new jersey and one case in the kentucky and there are more than 140 reported measles cases across the country with the majority being in texas. as we reported yesterday,it has turned deadly. a child has died in texas marking the first child death from the virus in more than two decades.

george scalise is following it all for us from lubbock. george, that is one of the counties dealing with a large number of measles cases. tell us how the officials are trying to protect people from getting the virus. >> reporter: i want to point you to something interesting that we found. this is one of 17 buses by the emergency medical task force that is being set up to help with preventative care. i will take you on board. ordinarily, it would be full. it is empty right now and being sanitized. what state officials are doing is trying to help people that have been exposed to measles, those who have not been vaccinated or are immunocompromised. basically what you are seeing, they are setting up little tables where people to get shots, boosters to get treated if they think they have been exposed in the window for that

could be 3 to 6 days and that applies to those who have either not been vaccinated or believe they have been immunocompromised. if you have been vaccinated, there is no need for the operation but this is one of the avenues that the state has taken. you also see the clinic offering the mmr vaccination. as we heard from many health officials, this could be prevented with those doses. 93% effectiveness, 97% once you get that second dose so that is one of the measures ththat the state has taken. >> i used to live near that part of texas and i know there are a lot of people who are skeptical of vaccines for talk about the people you have been meeting in the community. what are they saying? >> reporter: there is still a lot of debate even with all of the information. i did talk to one mother who said she did not want to wait anymore. she was behind schedule and went ahead and got her child's vaccination, today.

[ indistinct conversations ] i skipped the line. news daily good thursday, i'm janelle wang. it's day two of a strike for tens of thousands of uc health workers, researchers, lab technicians and patient care workers demanding better wages and working conditions. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab is outside ucsf, with the potential impact the strike could have on patients. ucsf says if you are a patient and you have an appointment or a scheduled procedure that will be maintained, they have backfilled the positions left forhese days by these workers. these workers are on the picket lines for a second straight day. there are two unions on the lines afscme and green, also known as

american federation of state, county and municipal employees, and uptight wearing light blue. they represent university professional and technical employees. now, many of the workers here have roles at medical facilities, but others go beyond. upt represents around 20,000 lab technicians and researchers, and earlier in the week, we reported on the impacts of the ongoing bird flu outbreak. now, lab technicians represented by upt have a significant role at a specific testing lab in davis, which handles testing of the most dangerous types of bird flu. they're extremely burnt out. the impact is severe. like i said, it's a handful of people. if you think about how many people are in california alone, let alone how many samples they are processing, it is unrealistic and impossible for a handful of people to do that sustainably or long term. now the strike affects nearly 40,000 workers at

every uc campus and medical facility across the state. after me is striking for what they call the growing affordability and staff vacancy crisis plaguing frontline university employees. this is their second strike in three months. the university of california has responded, saying in part, quote, despite negotiations for most of 2024, afscme has declared an impasse. the two parties are working through the state regulated process to attempt a resolution. now, with regards to update, the universityf california says gotiations began in june of 2024 and they still continue. so as mentioned, there are two unions striking. the union represented in green army will end their strike at midnight tonight, while the other union upd, wearing light blue, will continue to strike for a third day tomorrow here at ucsf and other uc campuses across the state in san francisco, ginger

conejero saab nbc bay area news. thanks, ginger. here are some other stories you need to know about efforts to fight hate crimes in the south bay, and more cuts for the oakland unified school district. in a vote late last night, ousd board members approved plans to lay off up to 150 workers. more than half are expected to be full time positions. pink slips are required to go out by march 15th. the district is facing a nearly $100 million in cuts amid a massive budget deficit and declining enrollment in the south bay, and symposium focused on preventing hate crimes. san jose police invited the public to get educated about the tools available to prevent and report hate crimes. it's happening at mexican heritage plaza until 3 p.m. today, and it is open to the public. things are remaining warm across the bay area today. let's get an update from meteorologist kari hall. take a look at our high temperatures today in the south bay. it will

a crucial federal meeting about vaccines schedule next month has been canceled according to a member of the food and drug administration vaccines advisory committee. >> the u.s. is dealing with a particularly severe season this year, at least 90,000 adults and 86 children have died since october. this comes after another key vaccines meeting. dr. john torres joins us now. dr. john, a lot of people up until this point probably did not know these meetings were happening so what is the significance of them? why do we need this panel to advise on a food string for this fall? >> i think most of us heard about this at the beginning of 2020 this is the committee on what to do during the covid vaccine,

how to formulate it and how to reformulated during change and this is the one that will decide what is going to happen with the flu vaccine coming fall and winter. it takes manufacturers around six months to develop the vaccine so they need to know by the end of march what to put in that vaccine and have been formulated so it is effective against the string that is going to be here. this is truly an advisory committee and this is a group of experts, these experts sit down for a full day to discuss this, argue amongst themselves, come up with that decision and get that information to the fda, they make that decision on how to move forward and what to put in our food vaccine so that we are protected as possible. >> i understand the cdc also postponed its advisory committee meeting so if it is not those two panels, the ones we just talked about, who determines the strain and how next year's flu vaccine is made ? >> this is the head scratcher

because typically, the cdc advisory committee giving advice to the fda and they decide what to do with this advice. essentially, it is like a board of directors, the ceo listens to them, the president listens to their cabinet. in cases like this, they could certainly come out with the flu vaccine but what we don't know is are they going to follow the world health organization's advice, are they going to recommit the committee to make sure they get great advice? how are we going to do this? we simply don't know.>> dr. john, how does this ultimately impact the united states preparedness for any disease? >> it is definitely going to decrease our preparedness if we don't get the best advice and all of these artists is continually change, flu vaccine changes every year and when he took keep on top of that to get the most effective acting. 40% to 60%, that still saves lives and without that, that

might not happen. in the middle east, israeli authorities are investigating a car revving attack in northern israel this morning, a people injured in two of them seriously. >> it comes hours after hamas returned the remains of four more israeli hostages last night, the last four to be released during the first phase of the cease-fire said to am this saturday, matt bradley has more from tel aviv. >> last night, with all the final acts of that six week long first phase of the cease- fire between the israelis and hamas and it resulted in the transfer of hostages, about four deadly hostages from the gaza strip to israel and shortly after that, after those bodies were verified, we saw the release of more than 600 palestinians from israeli jails.

to satisfy the final bit of that first phase, the first six weeks and while there was a lot of talk right before that that this was not going to happen at all, it was right until both sides accusing the other of violating the peace treaty, the israelis thing they would not release more than 600 palestinian prisoners until they sign end to the ceremonies of releasing those sausages which they said were humiliating every week. hostages on two stages in front of crowds, in the gaza strip before releasing this, a lot of protests from the israelis and then that all went to a head right at the last minute but this treaty, this tenuous treaty between the israelis and hamas is not out of the woods, there are still big problems ahead and because we have reached the end, there are no real efforts from other side to negotiate from phase 1 to phase 2. phase 2 would see a permanent withdrawal from the gaza strip after more than a

year or 16 months of fighting. now, we have seen the israelis set from the prime minister's office that they will be sending a delegation to cairo to try to negotiate. it wasn't clear if these negotiations would try to extend the first phase of the treaty or moving on to the second phase. either way, this treaty is the closest to being broken in both sides returning to this blistering war. have you thought about buying an electric car recently? a record number was sold in the u.s. last year but a big reason many people are not buying is because of a lack of charging stations. now, brian cheung tells us a planned solution is facing those fading away. >> reporter: in dunmore, pennsylvania, spencer says needs are getting rain checks about buying electric cars.

>> reporter: these three girls have a lifelong bond. it all started when kelly suddenly felt tired.>> it was hard to breathe. >> she was in severe heart failure at 11 years of age. >> reporter: and later that year, kelly got a life-saving call, a donator. journey would get that new heart but although her old heart muscle wasn't working, the valves could still be used to help other patients. >> we call it a dominant transplant. it means one person gets a new heart and the other heart comes out that has valves in it so we can split that heart. >> reporter: those recipients, margaret and kinsley. >> how did you feel about being able to help these two, too? that piece of her heart probably saved your life. expect yes, it probably did.

dark are under arrest. they are suspected of a copr wire theft that knocked out power across morgan hill. but police fear the thefts could be more widespread. nbc bay area's kris sanchez reports from morgan hill. when thieves steal copper wiring, it's often visible to the naked eye. sometimes they dig up the concrete at the base of street lights. sometimes they lift the covers off the electrical boxes altogether. and then there's the obvious sign of neighborhoods that are very, very dark. and that's what happened on tuesday. morgan hill police arrested two suspects after a copper wire theft in one neighborhood. they busted the suspects in the act. police say they saw two men tampering with a light pole power box on butterfield boulevard. and while those men fledhe scene, they were eventually taken into custody. not long after the damage there estimated at $20,000. but this happened also on saturday. we
