today in the bay. good friday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. of course, we'll get you updated on what's happening with those roads. mike has that for us coming up. but first let's start out with that forecast, because today will be probably the last day that we can get out and just have fun outside. yeah. last day i'm wearing short sleeves for a while. we're going to have a big cooldown over the next few days and take a look at this beautiful sunrise we're already starting to see in san jose. as we get the clouds overhead and all of the colors as the sun starts to rise over the hills. so we're going to have a really nice day, although it won't be completely clear. it's going to be comfortable with temperatures headed for the mid 70s once again and some times of sunshine into the afternoon. that'what we'll see across the bay area with mid to upper 70. novato 75 and 73, in fremont, while los gatos will hit a high of 77 degrees. we'll talk about that
6:02 am
weekend cooldown and the rain coming up. mike, it seems like for now it is friday light. yeah, the weather is great, the conditions are great right now, and we're looking at no backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. fridays tend to see a later build, and we have no build right now. just at the top of the hour, we're looking at the crash, still active in the grid, but no slowing south 101 past blythedale and getting toward the golden gate bridge. we did hear that a vehicle may have made some impact with one of the barriers near toll plaza lane number two. so we're watching, but no slowing and no further activities. a little build for that bay bridge, a little for highway 37. and just from time to time, there's one sensor change light traffic through concord right now. back to you. thanks, mike. with many bay area health facilities still in the midst of weathering the current flu season on a global level, health leaders are already pivoting. new. this morning, the world healtlth organization is finalizing plans for the next flu vaccine. today in the bay ginger conejero saab live for us in san francisco. and ginger, this all comes in the wake of

really one of the most severe flu seasons that we've seen in quite some time. that is correct. marcus and laura. quite a rough flu season that people worldwide are experiencing now. doctors and experts do this every year. they take a look at the strains and strains and make the decision on the new flu vaccine. but this year, there is an extra layer, an added layer of interest and concern. here's doctor peter chin-hong of ucsf's infectious disease department, explaining on this unusual parallel that doctors are focusing on. the reason why we're paying a lot of attention to the flu season this year is because we have a parallel outbreak in bird flu, as people might know, and the more bird flu and the more human flu you have next to each other, the more chances that bird flu can exchange genes with human flu and figure out a way to get inside our bodies more efficiently, because right now,
6:04 am
it's not doing a great job of that. and that's why we haven't seen more human cases. the w.h.o. is meeting today, and they currently wrapped up discussions and recommendations this morning about the chosen strains for the next flu vaccine. as mentioned, this is typical. but what is not typical is the surge in the flu worldwide this year. now, the united states is taking part in that w.h.o. meeting. president donald trump saying last month, the global health agency mishandled the covid 19 pandemic and other international health crises. the trump and trump, rather, i should say, added the u.s. will leave the world health organization. but it also comes as the fda canceled its meeting to select flu strains for next season's shots. a spokesperson for the department of health and human services, which oversees the fda, did not immediately respond to an nbc request for comment. now we're talking about how bad this flu season is,
6:05 am
doctor peter chin-hong says it is not too late to get your flu shot. it can still be around for the next couple of months. he is expected to take part in a press conference delving deeper into this later today. we'll continue to monitor that, and you can find the latest on nbcbayarea.com. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. thank you so much, ginger. i feel like we all know someone who has had the flu this season. well, activists today staging a national day of action with the idea of hitting big businesses where it hurts. now they're calling it an economic blackout to oppose what organizers call excessive influence from billionaires and leading political parties. the group, called people's union usa, is behind this ■campaign. t cites recent dei rollbacks as one of the inspirations, and it calls itself a movement for the working americans. now, that same group is promising more action in the weeks and months to come. our very own kris sanchez is digging deeper into this story. she's going to have

that full report for us coming up in the next half hour in just a few hours. president donald trump hosts ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky at the white house. this is a live look outside there this morning. the leader of the war torn country comes to washington after he and president trump traded barbs over russia's war on ukraine. today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington this morning. and alice, president trump we know is really trying to land a deal to gain those mineral mineral rights, i should say, in ukraine in exchange for support. yeah, laura, there is a lot on the line in this meeting and really a lot of baggage coming into it. it certainly could be a turning point. three years after russia invaded ukraine. i spoke with a ukrainian human rights lawyer who says no one wants peace more than her people, but that it can only come through strength against russian president vladimir putin. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy

coming to the white house today as president trump presses for a deal to end russia's war on ukraine. we're working very hard to get that war brought to an end. talking peace plans with the uk prime minister on thursday. it will either be fairly soon or it won't be at all. it can't be peace that rewards the aggressor. european allies have been working to bring ukraine's needs to the forefront in negotiations that began with russia. first. we are discussing our future. we're discussing our home. oleksandra matviichuk. a nobel peace prize winning ukrainian human rights lawyer has been advocating for her country in washington while documenting russian war crimes and centering ukrainian suffering. we don't hear about people. she says a lasting peace can only come through allies, promising security guarantees to check russian leader vladimir putin not to live under constant threat. that tomorrow russia will start bombarding massively

ukrainian cities again. president zelenskyy is expected to sign an agreement today to share revenue from ukrainian rare earth minerals with the u.s. in exchange for some form of security guarantees. though president trump has said he wants europe to take the lead. the president alarmed allies by falsely suggesting ukraine started the war. claims president zelensky called out as russian disinformation, leading president trump to call the democratically elected zelensky a dictator. did i say that? i can't believe i said that. next question. a key test today of where a critical relationship and the future of ukraine is headed. the u.k. prime minister said europe would step up to limit future russian aggression at its doorstep, and he committed to putting british boots on the ground and planes in the sky to support peace in ukraine. laura. all right, so much always going on in waington these days, as well

as all those governmental layoffs. and alice, a judge in san francisco, actually getting involved when it comes to this mass firing of federal employees. what do we know there? yeah. laura, that ruling grants temporary relief to employees. late yesterday, the federal judge ordered the trump administration to rescind a memo directing mass layoffs, specifically the supplies to probationary employees. the ruling calls the firings, quote, illegal and says they should be stopped. the judge, william alsup, appointed by president clinton, wrote, quote, the office of personnel management does not have any authority whatsoever under any statute in the history of the universe to hire and fire employees within another agency. his order, however, does not reinstate those probationary employees who were already dismissed. this comes as the government's climate and weather agency, noah, laid off 5% of its staff yesterday. it's unclear what

will happen next, given the new order from that san francisco judge. and then there's t this foreign aid workers at usaid cleaning out their desks to cheers from supporters who came out there. the recently fired federal workers were given 15 minutes to clear out. yesterday, the trump administration recently fired 1600 staffers and placed thousands more on leave at the agency that oversees foreign aid. laura, back to you. always something going on. and, alice, we appreciate all your coverage this morning. thank you. well, new signs of improvement this morning for pope francis, who continues to battle pneumonia in a rome hospital. vatican leaders say that he had another peaceful night and continues to rest. and also that he's now out of the critical phase of his recovery. church leaders are still not commenting on his prognosis, citing its complex clinical picture. the pope was first admitted to the hospital two weeks ago on valentine's day. now, let's take you up to the sierra on this friday morning.
6:11 am
wow, look at that. right. what a sunrise. no, that's in the sierra palisades tahoe, where people are hopeful about the return of snow as soon as this weekend. later today. state water agents should get a better sense of where the snowpack stands when they conduct that monthly sierra snow survey. current estimates put the snowpack at about 85% of normal for this time of year. that's for the entire sierra. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring things. sounds like some new snow would be very helpful about now. absolutely. and yeah, we talked about the statewide average at 85%. but when we break it down, the northern sierra is actually a little bit above what's normal today. the southern sierra is really still lacking. and that's where we need the additional snowfall. so hopefully we do get that. but we are looking at a weekend snowfall total of about 2 to 7in for the most part. there could be a little bit more on the way, but we are probably not yetoing to make up all of the snow that we need in the southern sierra. but as we take a look out there and looking at
6:12 am
the forecast this weekend, unfortunately with temperatures in the mid 50s, we may see some of that melting before we get that light snow coming in on sunday. and just a heads up, if you are coming back to the bay area on sunday, just plan on it taking a little bit longer as that snow begins to fall. we'll be tracking that. mike's been looking around to save you some money at the gas pump. trying. i will give you the best price around the bay. we continue to follow this in san jose. 417. if you make most stop your stop on camden avenue. if you're heading out through livermore, perhaps to start your weekend, you can fill up at 427 a gallon over there just off bluebill drive. springtown gas is the name of the shop there. and if you're heading through san francisco, then your weekend can start with 439 as the best price in the city. the lowest they have to top off your tank at double time on mission street. check gasbuddy.com for the best value, either where you are or where your destination might be. on the roadways, destinations are pretty much at speed and a minimum travel time for most of the bay. getting across the san mateo bridge, we're starting to
6:13 am
see a little slowing for 880. getting to the bridge out of oakland, the metering lights have been turned on over at the bay bridge. will give a few minutes for that backup to form. there's none yet. and on the san mateo bridge, we wanted to show you the volume over there. with the tail lights getting a little more closely gathered here, but no problems. you're still at speed. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. competing with open ai. still ahead on today in the bay. the new app, one silicon valley tech giant is set to launch as the company aims to take over as the leader in artificial intelligence. taking a look at the futures before the markets open. okay, a little bit in the positive. we're going to have a look at your business headlines when we return. plus flying taxis. yes, you heard me right. flying taxis may be right around the corner. we're going to tell you just how soon you can start hailing these new aircraft and rolling out the red carpet for hollywood's biggest night. the heated race for best picture at the oscars, and the touching tributes in store for

almost here. that's right. get your outfits ready for the 97th annual academy awards takes place on sunday. many categories, including best picture, are truly up for grabs. i'm afraid it is not so simple. ten films are nominated for the big prize. hollywood forecasters say there are two frontrunners, but there could also be a surprise in the works. the race for best picture is between a honora and conclave, but i think you can also count out the brutalist and even a complete unknown comedian and former late night tv host conan o'brien will take the stage as host. the ceremony is expected to pay tribute to the victims of the california wildfires and actors who died in the past year, including the recently deceased gene hackman, just this week. in the meantime, deadline reports a segment dedicated to the music featured in james bond films could also be in the works. so it's always a fun night. yeah it

6:21 am
75 expected in danville and pleasanton and oakland 69 degrees. it will be 64 in half moon bay and 73 in redwood city foran francisco. it will be back into the upper 60s today. no more 70s like what we had yesterday, and 71 in mill valley, and temperatures still a little bit cooler near the coast. while in ukiah, we're headed for 81 degrees tonight. if we are clear enough, you may be able to see a very rare celestial event with seven planets being visible and lined up in the sky. this will be the best night for that. and it happens just after sunset where you can see possibly jupiter, venus and mars. just a very bright three objects. it looks like stars in the sky. maybe you'll be able to tell the colors telling them apart, but you will need binoculars or a telescope to see. uranus as well as neptune. and saturn may be a little bit too low in the horizon. you do have to be kind of in a high place if you want
6:22 am
to see saturn very low in the sky, but we are going to see clouds coming in. so unfortunately you may not be able to see everything. and this next storm system comes in late tomorrow night and starts to bring us some waves of rain, as well as some cooler temperatures. and the rain chances continue through next next week. just kind of off and on with some breaks in between. but take a look at the changes we have ahead, going from 74 in the inland areas today to only 59 with showers on sunday. and mike, you're checking back in on the bay bridge. yeah. the metering lights have been on for almost a half hour now, and we're just now starting to see a little more slowing off the 880 overcrossing. traffic's very light right now. it's 21 after the hour, and no major issues coming out of the east bay. we have some more slowing building up out of richmond, over towards san rafael. so 580 and the bay bridge to have about the same amount of traffic flow. highway 37 holds steady, and highway four sees the most change over the last few. contra costa county starting to pick up the

response to consumer cases, really, of all sizes because every penny counts. yeah. and recently, consumer investigator chris chmura team tackled a pair of those cases where families had tens of thousands of dollars on the line. happy friday. let's start with jean from the south bay. she told us she and her husband made a mistake paying off a $30,000 bank loan. they said they accidentally made that $30,000 payment to their credit card at the same bank. jean said the bank wasn't helping her undo the mistake, so she was stuck with a $30,000 credit on her credit card. jean contacted us, we contacted the bank and then freed up jean's money. next, we helped derek up in the north bay. his college landlord did major roof work and put him in a hotel. he showed us a photo of what his apartment looked like there. look at all the equipment. well, recently the property owner wanted to move derek back to the complex, to an apartment with three other students. even though derek's parents had leased him a solo

looking at that bright orange sky that, as we mentioned, looks like it's on fire. we're seeing that in dublin as well as you're heading out. temperatures are in the mid 40s and headed back to the 70s again today. last day of feeling temperatures like that in quite a while. so we'll talk about the weekend ahead. mike, what's going on in richmond? it's a teachable moment. this person is actually helping. they have a disabled vehicle. i think they just had the hood closed down. they might be able to clear, but it's in what's called the gore point. when we talk about the gore point, that's where two lanes separate for an offramp, or they come together after folks have merged onto the freeway. it's a sewing term for a triangle of fabric, and that's what we talk about. so that's the term we often use to where a location of an accident might have been relocated there off the roadway. meanwhile, the main roadways are being a smooth drive. friday shows a slower build over at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are on, but no big backup just yet. we have slowing starting to build here out of hayward, off the castro valley y and down in toward fremont. no major issues for the south bay. we're just starting again for 101. back to

you. thanks so much, mike. today a day of action, a latino phrase that's evolved into a call for a full economic blackout. the goal is to send a message to companies which are ending their diversity, equity and inclusion policies. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live from san jose's willow glen with more on what we need to know. kris. well, good morning to you, laura. so the call to action is to not spend any money, not in stores or restaurants, not even by gas. not shop in person or online. this latino frieze has been organizing on social media as a way to send a message to those companies, as you said, which have either eliminated or rolled back their policies toward diversity, equity, inclusion. people are calling out specifically best buy, target, amazon, walmart, home depot, starbucks, mcdonald's, just to name a few. and to contrast the delano grape boycott of the 1960s took five years to force growers to change their poor pay and working conditions. so you
6:34 am
might wonder what difference a one day boycott can make. we got an answer from the head of the latino think tank that tracks the data. what i can tell you is this those companies will notice. i don't know if it's going to be public, i don't know, but those companies know perfectly well what their sales per day is are, so they will notice. now consider that latinos contributed 14% of the us gdp. in total, the total of all goods and services produced in 2022, which is the most recent data available. and that amounted to $3.6 trillion, 13% more than the year before, according to the 2024 latino donor collaborative report. now, in california alone, latinos contributed more than $935 billion. now, the head of the latino donor collaborative says the latino freeze stands to say a lot about not just the latino community, but a certain segment. we're talking about the
6:35 am
young people who want to be reflected in hiring policies, not just now, but in the future. according to the us department of labor, 78% of the new workforce will come from latinos in the next ten years. as much as somebody can tell you don't use the social justice term of dei or equality, etcetera. when the market calls, the market calls, these companies are for profit companies that need to know where the growth is coming from. now, if you do have to shop today, the suggestion is that you buy local at your mom and pops, like here in downtown willow glen, and that you pay in cash so the banks feel the impact as well, or that you support the businesses that have retained their dei policies like costco and savemart. i have linked to a number of businesses or locations where you can find those businesses, but you can find more at latino freeze.com or at goods unite us dot com.
6:36 am
there you can search the policies of any company that you shop in. willow glen. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. thanks for the latest there kris. well, two women are now in custody. this is after a video went viral showing a dog being kicked across a front lawn. now, it sparked a lot of backlash in contra costa county. pittsburg police say that the woman seen in this viral video. well, the two women, they're a mother and a daughter. and that dog, gigi. so the gigi, the owner there. the dog's owner posted this video on social media. it shows what happened in his front lawn. now, ultimately, gigi was kicked and went flying. the dog's owner says this all followed a dispute with his neighbor, who ran over his plant, and that his neighbor's daughter and granddaughter came over and threatened him with a gun. but then one of them kicked the dog. she hit the planter right here. i mean, she hit it hard. it wasn't like she got kicked and tumbled. she got

kicked and smashed against the planter, is what happened. any juror that sees that video is going to be appalled. and this would be a very difficult case to take to trial. police say gigi is safe at home. the owner thanks the community for its support. new at 6:00, the fate of a recently fired l.a. fire chief will be the main focus of an upcoming special city council hearing. l.a. mayor karen bass last week fired christian crowley following weeks of tension in the aftermath of the l.a. firestorm. the mayor was in africa when the fires broke out, and says crowley never warned her about the extreme weather conditions. some also argue the fire department should have been at maximum staffing levels. crowley now holds a lower rank in the department but is appealing her firing. leaders will hold a hearing next tuesday after rescheduling it from today. you see, workers in one of two striking unions will walk off the job today for a third

online. but it's going to be not only cool in the water, but also in the low 50s for the air temperature and staying mostly cloudy. and then we're taking a look at our weekend forecast with a filtered sunshine today, a few high clouds moving in, but we're still headed back to the mid 70s. a big drop in temperatures tomorrow with mid 60s and more clouds and rain developing late, and then the showers will be in the forecast for sunday as well as a slight chance on monday. now this is the last weekend before mardi gras and there is a big party going on with the parade in north beach in san francisco starts at 130 and it looks at least for the start of the parade. it's going to be nice with low 60s, but the later we go in the day the rain chances will increase. so just a heads up about that. and also if you're going to the beach, there will be a beach hazard statement in effect where we could see some of those breakers building to 20ft. so if santa cruz is in your weekend plans, stay well away from the water. you know about those sneaker waves. and we could see temperatures today in the mid 60s, upper 50s

tomorrow and then rain moving in on sunday. and then you may want to wrap up the weekend in napa. just bring the rain gear if you're going to be running in the marathon that starts early in the morning. mike, you're looking at the friday light at the bay bridge, right? exactly. so we have a gradual build, very gradual, almost an hour since these metering lights were activated, some flashing lights. we noticed there's a tow truck over there. someone may have had a little break down there on the approach coming off the 880 overcrossing. watch it. it's narrow there. no major disturbance as far as the flow goes. a little build for berkeley out of richmond and across the bay bridge. we just showed you highway 37 hold steady with a little more slowing near the racetrack and highway four, there's the build. contra costa county. 242 shows slowing in toward pleasant hill. now a reminder, folks, all we can continue actually to the 14th of march. we have no central subway service because of tunnel repairs. you'll use the bus overhead. the t and the t third and the katy will help you take you from chinatown's rose park station down to fourth
