dancing in the black community. we will show you what the fun is all about. we are going to begin with the breaking news at the white house where we saw an unprecedented argument between president trump and ukrainian president zelenskyy. president trump said zelenskyy was going to sign a minerals deal with the u.s. at the white house today. he softened his language about zelenskyy and ukraine in recent days. the two leaders met in the oval office. vice president j.d. vance was there. in front of the cameras, got into an extremely tense and awkward exchange. it started when ce accused the ukrainian president of grandstanding. >> have you been to ukraine? do you see what problems we have? >> i have been to -- >> don't tell us what we're going to feel. >> i'm not telling you. i'm answering. >> you are in no position to dictate that. you don't have the cards right now. with us, you start having cards.

testy exchange between president zelenskyy and president trump. after the cameras left, white house officials tell us that president trump huddled with his advisors and decided that president zelenskyy was not ready for peace talks and he wanted him to leave the white house effectively showing him the door as secretary of state marco rubio and the national security advisor were rming them that zelenskyy was not ready for peace. ukrainian officials wanted to stay at the white house. were asking to reset the conversation. wanted to sign the rare earth minerals deal that was expected to be signed. president trump and the white house say that was not something the president wanted to do. they said that they felt extremely disrespected. they saw president zelenskyy rolling his eyes and shrugging his shoulders. that was part of the personal exchange. >> what have we heard from president zelenskyy? what do we know about what he has planned? he is in washington. do we know what he is doing?

>> reporter: that's right. president zelenskyy is still in washington. he was supposed to bow having a press conference with president trump. that was canceled. we have heard from him online. he said, thank you america, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit, thank you president of the united states, congress and the american people. he went on to say, ukraine needs just and lasting peace. we are working for that. we know president zelenskyy is expected to have an interview with fox news. we're not sure whether that's going to still happen. fox news says it's still going to happen. >> a lot of members of congress have an interest in what happens with these peace talks. what are we hearing from them? >> reporter: we really are hearing both political parties going into their respective corners. democrats are calling this oval office exchange shameful, saying the president is playing into the s of russia. dick durbin, co-chair of the ukrainian -- of the senate

ukraine caucus. i extend my ies to zelenskyy and reaffirm my support for our ukrainian friends. we heard from lindsey graham. he spoke just outside the white house. take a listen. >> complete, utter disaster. what i saw was disrespectful. i don't know if we can do business with zelenskyy again. >> reporter: it's very interesting that senator graham said he warned president zelenskyy not to, quote, take the bait. meaning he wanted him to know that he shouldn't get angry or emotional, if president trump said anything that might cause him to do that. it's interesting he warned zelenskyy going into the meeting. we're not sure if he had some sort of understanding that president trump and vice president vance were going to berate him. it's interesting he said that. at lot happening today.

an extraordinary day. >> thank you so much, yamiche. we are following breaking news on the health of the pope. the pope experienced a sudden worsening when it comes to his respiratory functions. the pontiff has been hospitalized for two weeks now after being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs. claudio, people are praying for him since he was admitted. what's the latest? >> reporter: hi, kate. the vatican says in the early hours of the afternoon, the pe experienced a bronco spasm, which led him to vomit and inhale some of it which had to be removed from his lungs by the doctors. he was attached to a non-invasive mechanical ventilation, that's different

from intue biden bation. the vatican said the crisis is now over and that the pope is back being in good spirits. he has been alert at all times. the doctors said it would take 24 to 48 hours to understand how this will impact his clinical condition. i don't know whether you can hear this, but behind me in st. peter's square, they have been holding a rosary. hundreds of people who do this every day, they have been doing this every day since monday. today, more than ever, the pope will need those prayers, especially after this crisis. >> we can hear that behind you. thank you so much. now to more breaking news. an illinois jury found the man charged in the killing of a 6-year-old palestinian american boy guilty on all counts. the jury deliberated for about an hour after that five-day trial. you will remember the man. he has been convicted.

he was accused of stabbing the boy and his mother in the room that they rented out of his home. the mother survived. it came a week after the hamas terror attack on israel in 2024. prosecutors had alleged that he stabbed the boy and the mother because of their muslim faith. joining us now is nbc s correspondent maggie vespa. start with what happened in court and what kind of a sentence could he be looking at? >> reporter: what happened in court is as you said, this jury came back fast. they deliberated for about an hour on the dot on the first degree murder and hate charges. it didn't take them long. they bought the case that the prosecution laid out throughout the week. it was a graphic case. saying, after the october 7 attacks in 2023, they argued he

became obsessed with the muslim faith of his tenants. started peppering them with questions about why their people were killing jewish and babies, she testified. eventually, attacked. he referred to them as a rat infestation in his home. today, in closing arguments, prosecutors told the jury, what do you do when you have an infested rat situation? you exterminate them. that's what he did. that was his thought process. that was their argument. the defense really frankly kind of presented just a short case effectively saying the jury should weigh whether they believe police jumped to conclusions. whether they wewent in with a bs and failed to follow up or investigate further. clearly, kate, the jury did not buy that. guilty on all counts. >> maggie vespa, thanks. it's time for our "money minute." elon musk could give a massive

faa contract to one of his own companies. citigroup's nearly $81 trillion mistake. kate rooney joins us. >> hi. the faa is reportedly close to scrapping a $2.4 billion contract with verizon to overall its aging air traffic control system in favor of starlink, according to "the washington post." starlink is being tested at two faa facilities. cancelling the contract in favor of musk's starlink could test a conflict of interest guardrails. the faa says no decision has been made. microsoft is shutting done its calling and messaging service skype after 21 years. they said the service will be shut down. that's going to happen in may. over the next few days it will allow users to sign into teams with their skype credentials or export any of their data.

people across the country are taking part in a day of protest by not spending any money. it's called an economic blackout. organizers say it's to protest corporate greed and the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives by companies company companys and the administration. brian cheung joins us with more. the idea is 24 hours of no

spending at big corporations, not mom and pops, but corporate types. >> yeah. >> what's the behind this inaction? >> the idea is to try to make the companies pay attention to the fact that people seem to be upset with them pulling back on the dei policies. they are disappointed. they feel companies need to pay more attention to diversity and equity and inclusion, which a lot of the companies like target, walmart, john deere have been pulling back in recent months tied to the rise of donald trump back to the white house for the second term, who has been critical of the policies. the question is whether this makes a dent in sales. more recent examples of boycotts haven't led to bankruptcy of any company. but that the message going out there, that's part of the conversation here. whether or not companies decide to u-turn on the policy will be seen. >> it's no way to know if it's happening or how many people are

doing or what the impact might be. does it work? >> go back to the civil rights movement. there have been very real examples of boycotts working. that right now the question is just about whether or not the scale could get to that level. of course, the message is getting out there. people are saying, we're unhappy with some of the changes the likes of target and walmart have made. we're not going to shop there for 24 hours. could the protests and boycotts become more prevalent? maybe in totality that could have more of an impact. >> thank you. right wing influencer andrew tate and his brother tristan with back notice united states after romania allowed them to leave the country. they arrived in fort lauderdale yesterday. they were arrested in 2022 and remain under criminal investigation in romania over accusations including human trafficking and money laundering among other crimes. andrew tate was charged with having sex with a minor. they have denied any wrongdoing. marissa parra joins us.

step back, remind people who don't know who andrew and tristan tate are. what's the reaction of them being able to come back to the u.s.? >> we know and we have reported on this before. tate is openly misogynist, self-proclaimed anti-feminist and has been deplatformed on multiple different social media agencies, companies. we talked about the saga with x, how he got re-platformed. when it comes to these later updates here, they were in romania. there were travel restrictions. as we saw, the romanian agency said they approved a request to change the travel restrictions. they did not specify who made that request, kate. they were able, as you saw, in the video, as we have been reporting, the tate brothers returned to the united ates, landing in fort lauderdale by private jet. the governor said he did not know they were coming.

mcdonald's, just to name a few. but to contrast the delano grape boycott of the 1960s took five years to force growers to address poor pay and working conditions. so you might wonder what difference a one day boycott might make. we got an answer from the head of a latino think tank that tracks the data. what i can tell you is this those companies will notice. i don't know if it's going to be public. i don't know. but those companies know perfectly well what their sales per day is are. so they will notice. now consider that latinos contributed 14% of the u.s. gdp. the total of all goods and services produced in 2022, the most recent data available. that amounted to $3.6 trillion, 13% more than the year before. and according to the 2024 latino donor collaborative report, in california alone, latinos contributed more than $935 billion. now, the head of the collaborative says that the

moment of pga national in florida became man versus gator. that's billy horschel finishing the 6th hole when the alligator made its way on the green. a police officer was trying to get it away with no success. that's when horschel used his club to successfully nudge the gator back into the water. the whole thing only took seconds. a terrifying start to the day for a group of middle school students in ohio. thankfully, everyone is okay. a school bus in cleveland heights caught fire during the morning pickup on thursday. one neighbor heard a boom before seeing the bus catch fire. the driver helped all 15 students get out safely. fire crews put out the flames. students were taken to school by another bus. authorities are still looking into what caused that fire. nearly 30 drug cartel suspects have been deported from mexican prisons to the u.s.

that's according to four sources familiar with the matter. prosecutors in both countries say the prisoners face charges related to drug trafficking and in some cases homicide. among other crimes. one of the suspects is a man charged in the 1985 murder of a u.s. drug agent. the security cooperation between the two countries comes as the trump administration has threatened to impose tariffs on mexico starting next week. investigators are still trying to determine how actor gene hackman and his wife died. officials say the deaths are suspicious and while there's no evidence of foul play, it has not been ruled out. the two were found dead in separate rooms of their home wednesday afternoon. authorities say it's possible they might have been dead for weeks. dana griffin joins us now from santa fe, new mexico. we are learning more now about what investigators have found inside the home. what do we know?

>> reporter: yes, kate, they conducted a search warrant to look for clues as to what may have caused the deaths. they noted in the inventory report that they collected two cell devices, medication, including one for thyroid and high blood pressure, and also a 2025 monthly planner. they are going to collect this evidence and use it to determine if there's a link to something else outside of natural causes. we know that there was a pill bottle. we talk about the medication, there were pills scattered along the bathroom counter where betsy was found. they believe she may have fallen abruptly and that caused the heater near her head. today, the sheriff talked more about how important even just looking at her medication or his medication might be. listen. >> that's obviously very important evidence at the scene. that information was collected. that information was passed to the office of the medical investigators to help them make

a determination. we're looking at that specifically. and other medications that were in the residence. that is something of concern. >> reporter: the fire department conducted testing. they say that they have not found any indication that there was carbon monoxide or gas leak in the house. >> when do we think we will learn results of autopsies or toxicology reports? >> reporter: investigators hope to get that answered within the next couple of weeks. it could take up to three months, depending how long it takes for the lab to return the results. there has been a preliminary autopsy. they have determined that there was no trauma to the bodies. that's a good indication that there's probably no foul play. the sheriff is confident there's no foul play. because it's a suspicion us dea, they are looking at everything. >> dana, thank you. federal workers are protesting outside of a veterans affairs hospital in detroit

today. it comes after another round of layoffs cut 1,400 jobs at the department of veterans affairs. the v.a. secretary said in a statement the layoffs only impacted non-critical positions and that the move would save $83 million a year. union officials argue they would create more problems for an already short-staffed department. joining us now, shaquille brewster on the ground in detroit. i know you spoke with former v.a. employees who are veterans. they believe they did serve in mission critical positions. what did they say? >> reporter: absolutely. if you look at this hospital that's behind me and the hospital in ann arbor, there are more than 50 v.a. employees who lost their jobs. i talked to several who were greeting patients, setting up their appointments, they were doing jobs that no one else in the hospital could do.

i want you to listen to some of the conversations i had with folks who were veterans themselves. went to work and found out that they were no longer employed. listen here. what do you say to those who say, the government is bloated, there need to be cuts this is something that the president was elected to do? >> not at the expense of medical care for veterans. >> me serving my country as an active duty military member is no different than the work i'm doing serving my country today, serving the same veterans who i saw bleed in afghanistan. >> reporter: that word that you heard from there, serve. that's something i heard over and over again. they don't want to be part of a political conversation. they want to get back to work and be able to serve again. >> shaq, a federal judge this week said the firing of newer probationary employees was illegal. what else did the v.a. say about its decision to lay off so many people?

>> reporter: you mentioned earlier that they said that some is about saving money and that's going to be put into other resources that then support veterans. i want you to listen to what -- i want to show you what we heard from the v.a. secretary in a statement where he says, these and other recent personnel decisions are extraordinarily difficult but thv.a. is focused on allocating resources to help as many veterans, families, caregivers and survivors as possible. he went on to say that this is not something that's going to touch the benefits that veterans receive. however, when you listen to those who lost their jobs, one who said that she is hearing from patients who say they will follow her to another location. they disagree with that. >> shaq, thank you. there's a new warning about towing companies. we rely on them when we are at our most vulnerable, like after a car accident or breakdown. officials that's when some of the companies might try to rip you off.

we see how to protect ourselves. >> reporter: authorities say you are watching a rogue towing scheme in progress. these drivers were just in car crashes when suddenly, a tow truck shows up to help. instead of being the answer to their prayers, police say they wind up causing a new headache. >> you have rogue towers showing up on scene and often taking advantage of people, 10, 15, $16,000 just to get an individual's car back. >> reporter: they hold the cars hostage? >> they are. >> reporter: they are predatory towers. complaints about them have skyrocketed 89% in the last three years. >> the scammers are following the money. we see this in major cities from chicago to new york and d.c. then we are seeing it in smaller communities like des moines, iowa. >> reporter: our station in los angeles went out with police to expose how they do it.

at this accident, watch the guy in the official looking reflective vest. police say he is actually a spotter for rogue towers, tracking accidents on a police scanner. he testimonies victims he will work with their insurance company or aaa to arrange a tow. what he really does is he call his buddy, an unlicensed tower, who hauls the car away and charges the owner thousands to get it back. that's above the typical fee of a couple hundred dollars. >> they gain your confidence like a typical con man. >> reporter: the lapd says they can only slap them with a fine for not having a permit. in 90% of crashes, it's these bandit towers who show up first. >> these companies are robbing you. >> reporter: this man says it happened to his teen son. the new charge was $2,300.

desperate, he paid. >> we weren't sure if we were going to see the car again. >> reporter: across the country, our nbc stations have uncovered more schemes. >> the towing company did this. >> reporter: elderly victims targeted with sky high fees. >> i'm on social security and a pension. i can't afford this. >> reporter: in chicago, catching catch catching rogue companies towing it away illegally. in many areas, this is legal. most states have few if any laws against predatory towing. the best way to protect yourself, if you didn't request it, then reject it. >> if you have been in a car accident and a towing company shows up, don't do anything until law enforcement arrives first. wait for them to give you a list of pre-approved towing vendors.

else? >> anxiety. it can be depression. maybe i'm not picking up on social cues. maybe i'm not paying attention to you. i'm just blah, blah, blah and what i call having a little verbal diarrhea. i'm letting it all hang out. maybe i don't feel so good about myself. maybe my self-esteem isn't great. i need to fill the air. >> it's interesting. it makes you feel more compassionate toward that person. maybe it's something deeper going on. we need to ask questions. >> it's about inserting yourself and asking the questions. i think it's -- if it's so ongoing that this is what your friendship is based on, you need to re-evaluate that and talk to the friend about it. >> is there a point when you stop being a friend because you can't deal with that? >> i know it's -- that's a hard question. yes. you have to protect yourself at the end of the day. if that friend is just draining you. if they become the energy vampire, we might need to say, this isn't good for me. >> what if you are thinking, my

[ giggles ] dc news daily. i'm bigad shaban. several teens are now behind bars in connection with a firearm bust in oakland. yielding weapons and cash. police shared details of the arrest just within the past hour after searching several properties in the bay area. yesterday morning, officers found ten firearms, one of which was an assault type pistol. they also confiscated lots of cash and ammunition. seven people were arrested, but we don't know their exact ages, though three of them are teenagers. police say the group was iolved in violent crimes around the area, including murders, shootings and armed robberies. and the teens are a common target for organized crime. we do see an
