march 1st. we are taking a live look outside. oh, we were going to take a live look outside. but. good morning. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. we want to welcome you to a brand new month. it is march 1st and cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. along with the new month comes new weather. we had such a warm week and now a big cool down. yeah, our little fling with spring is over. we are cooling it down this weekend. we see those low clouds and fog returning san bruno mountain. there's storm ranger. it's going to be busy later on today as we get some more moisture in here. breezy out there towards walnut creek and those mid 40s. and down here in san jose. some low 50s with those low clouds. also a gloomy morning, a chance to sleep on in. so we'll feel that cool down along wh some peeks of sunshine. a chance to get outdoors today later on this afternoon. but there is some spotty rain that's going to come into the picture as we go on into dinner time. continuing into our sunday plans, and even on into next week. our first full week of a brand new month.

i'll be back with those details. give you the timing of it all coming up in about 15 minutes. kira cinthia, thanks. we want to begin with breaking news. this morning. an airplane had to return to the airport after a bird strike. you have a live look at that plane right now. it happened at newark liberty international airport in new jersey. the fedex flight encountered the bird upon departure. the flight was headed to indianapolis and had to turn around. the strike damaged one of the boeing engines, as you see on your screen. that plane is disabled. they're on the runway. the faa will investigate. fedex says the crews returned safely to the airport. and, of course, this is amid other aviation disasters and near disasters over the last two months. a live look for you now at the white hououse this morning, where it is quiet after yesterday's heated exchange between president trump and vice president vance and ukrainian president zelensky. yesterday's meeting was intended to be a negotiation over ukraine's

sharing of its rare earth minerals, but suddenly turned into a confrontation. nbc's julie sirkin was there. what began as a meeting to discuss a historic peace deal that could have ended the brutal war in ukraine, quickly spiraled into a standoff between president trump, ukrainian president zelensky and vice president vance. you've allowed yourself to be in a very bad position, and it happens to be right about from the very beginning of the war. not in a good position. you don't have the cards right now with us. you start having cards. cards right now you don't. you're playing cards. you're playing cards. you're gambling with the lives of millions of people. you're gambling with world war three. you're gambling with world war three. the tense exchange unprecedented in the oval office, the room traditionally reserved for diplomacy, capped off weeks of a public feud between the two leaders. what you're doing is very disrespectful to the country. zelensky and european

allies uneasy that president trump is inching closer toward russian president vladimir putin, who started the full scale invasion three years ago. i'm not aligned with putin. i'm not aligned with anybody. i'm aligned with the united states of america and for the good of the world. the day started amicably, with trump and zelensky expected to sign a deal for ukraine's rare earth minerals in exchange for u.s. support and long term security. we have something that is a very fair deal, really. i hope that this document first document will be the first step to real security guarantees for ukraine. instead, it appears president trump scrapping the plan. for now posting on social media, i want peace. he disrespecected te united states of america in its cherished oval office. he can come back when he is ready for peace. not long after the president's post, zelensky left the white house. at his urging, a bipartisan group of senators, including trump ally lindsey graham, met with ukrainian president zelensky after that oval office blowup. graham said

that zelensky either needs to resign or change his tune if there is any hope of peace for the war torn country. in washington, julie sirkin, nbc news. and before president zelensky left washington, he appeared with bret baier on fox news. commenting on that rocky relationship with president trump. do you think your relationship with donald trump, president trump, after today can be salvaged? yes, of course, because it's relations more than two presidents. it's the historical relations, strong relations between our people. and that's why i always begin with to thank your people from our people. president trump spoke to reporters before flying to florida for the weekend. he indicated he did not think zelensky was serious about a peace deal. i'm looking for peace. we're not looking to go into a ten year war and play

games. we want peace. and while republicans and trump's cabinet members are supporting the president, european leaders are posting messages of s support fr zelensky and ukraine. with usaid in limbo and russia keeping up its assault. the future of a u.s. deal with ukraine is now uncertain. all right. back here in the bay area, police are warning people to be alert and aware of an ongoing jewelry theft scam. we've seen these before. perpetrators approach victims, typically elderly targets, wearing expensive jewelry. they promise to sell or give them even better jewelry, overwhelm them, and then steal their real gold and jewels. today, in the bay's thom jensen spoke with one local woman who says her father was one of the latest victims. this is definitely not a one off. these distraction jewelry thefts have gotten the attention of police departments across the bay area, concerned for her safety. a

woman we will call sarah says it happened quickly sunday at the san jose flea market on hill cap road. a woman approached her father's truck and asked for a cigarette. she just went ahead and opened the door, hopped onto the truck, and then, she says, the woman began putting costume gold necklaces on her dad that she claimed were real ticket. you know, he said, no, no, no, thank you. i do not want any. it's okay. and but she was very insistent and her hands were really fast. before her dad knew it, the woman had his real gold necklace worth thousands of dollars and was on her way. she just yanked it off really quickly and then hopped out and jumped into the getaway car. her father tried to pursue them, but the two sped away through the packed parking lot and lost them. then he turns, and then we can't see where in the world they went. we blurred the faces of the two people because while san jose pd has taken an incident report, they have not identified the two as suspects or returned our requests for

information. but sarah says other people recognize the two and have seen them approach other seniors outside the matrix casino and other businesses. they've been doing this for quite a long time already. the scam usually starts by a person approaching a victim and engaging in a conversation by asking for help or for directions. it's not just san jose, palo alto, san ramon on social media, milpitas pd warned about this popular scam. take a look at how quickly this thief steals the victim's real jewelry. milpitas pd warns bay area residents to be on alert and says to always be cautious around unfamiliar people and never accept gifts from them or allow them to get too close. sarah says she and her father hope other elderly bay area residents heed the warnings. he just does not want this to happen to anyone else. and you know i'm doing the best i can to spread the word. police encourage anyone who has been approached in these scams to report the crimes because they say the added evidence can help them when these cases go to court. thom jensen. today in the

bay area, some federal employees who received emails last week from elon musk demanding bullet points of what they've accomplished, have now received a second email from the so-called department of government efficiency. this is a screenshot of that second email. sources tell nbc news that employees at the department of education, the office of personnel management, and the federal bureau of prisons all got that second message from musk's department. the email directs employees to send five bullet points of what they accomplished by monday, and to complete this task weekly. sources say the email will be sent to hundreds of thousands more employees today. yeah, and speaking of elon musk, yesterday on the peninsula, protesters voiced their displeasure with his role in the trump administration. dozens of people gathered yesterday outside the tesla offices off of page mill road in palo alto to protest the

tesla ceo. organizers are calling on californians to boycott tesla altogether. protesters say they're demonstrating against musk and president trump's desires to cut federal jobs and programs and increase funding for mass deportations. happening today, another rally is scheduled. it will be at the tesla offices in dublin on amador plaza road. that's at noon. we have an update now in that search for the person who shot a police officer outside of a police station on the peninsula. investigators say an officer was ambushed in the parking lot of the hillsborough police department last saturday, february 22nd. they've already asked anyone who may have video from that day to share footage with police, but now they're specifically looking for footage of el camino real between west santa ynez avenue to hillside

skies and gloomy at sfo. on this chillier morning, we're expecting a cooldown and some rain this weekend. cinthia pimentel will be along in just a few minutes with your full microclimate forecast on this march 1st. but first, we have new clues into the mysterious deaths of actor gene hackman and his wife, pianist betsy arakawa. investigators say they now believe hackman died back on february 17th. that's nine days before he and his wife and one of their dogs were discovered dead in separate areas inside their santa fe, new mexico, home. investigators removed several items from that home, including heart and thyroid medications and medical records. they're also reviewing data provided by hackman's pacemaker, and are in the process of assessing the couple's cell phone records. we'll be analyzing cell phone data, phone

calls, text messages, events, photos in the in the cell phone to try to piece a timeline together. the couple was found on wednesday. 95 year old hackman's 65 year old wife was found in the bathroom with prescription pills scattered on top of the counter, with her body already showing signs of mummification. initial autopsy reports have revealed no signs of carbon monoxide poisoning for people living in san francisco's only safe parking site, the clock is ticking to move. it is known as the bay view vehicle triage center. it's a spot that opened back in 2022 and has served 132 households ever since. since late last year, the city announced the site will be closing on monday, the day after tomorrow. the city says everyone on site was offered permanent housing, rental subsidies, alternative shelter or relocation assistance before the closure. most have accepted that

help those who did not have to be out by the end of tomorrow. san francisco spent millions of dollars on the site, which was just recently equipped with electricity. it also offered case management, housing assistance and vehicle repair to those living there. the san francisco chronicle reports the high costs and limited success are among the reasons for the closure. well, it was once the go to for virtual calls and meetings, but microsoft is pulling the plug on skype after a 21 year run. microsoft says it will officially shut it down in may. skype won the attention of millions of people in the early aughts, but it stumbled after the mobile phone era and has not regained popularity since. microsoft is hoping skype loyalists will migrate over to its other video conferencing platform teams over the next few days. microsoft will allow people to sign in to teams using their skype credentials. that way, users can sync their contacts and chat history. well,

marks the beginning of lent, a time of fasting and abstinence. and we want to point out this beautiful king cake here. eaton during mardi gras. it can be pretty much eaten at any time of the year, but especially mardi gras. it has purple, green, and yellow colors. there's also a baby hidden inside. not a real one, but a toy baby. it's a sign of good luck. so whoever cuts the piece with the baby inside, it means you have good luck and you have to bring the cake for next year. our producer, dana's mom baked this for us. thank you so much, mrs. lights. we love you. time now to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. cooler weather out of nowhere. we had such a beautiful week. it was just our little taste of spring. but now into the weekend. yes, it will be a little gloomy, but a chance to maybe sleep in and then later have some coffee with cake there as we go throughout the day. we do have a chance to celebrate mardi gras at north beach in san francisco today. we're going to keep those temperatures cooler than the nice weather that we've

had. and you will notice that as we go on into the evening hours, we get some few rain icons popping up. so yes, this weekend it is back to winter. even though today is the start of meteorological spring. as we go on into tonight and into tomorrow, we are expecting some light rain. it won't be a lot, but there will be some chances where i'll guide you through that timing, where it could get a little bit heavier and that will continue on into next week as well. so we're going to get rid of those 70, a lot of us in those mid to upper 60s. but notice as i fast forward this into tomorrow br we are back into those upper 50s for our daytime highs. so let's take a look and track this together. we do see that front coming in as we go on into the afternoon, with some showers, and even getting that spin here as we go on into sunday. so that's where that isolated chance of some thunderstorms come into the picture. so let's zoom it on in. you'll get some drizzle out there towards the coastline on our start here to our saturday. for people going out there on a run or anything like that. definitely a bundle up as we go

on into the afternoon. peeks of sunshine, a chance to run outdoors, get those sports going, maybe some birthday parties early on in the day, but dinnertime and into the nighttime hours, that's when those spotty chances come on through and into our sunday morning. i'll be tracking this with storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. a chance for some isolated thunderstorms really through the morning hours, and then out of here into the picture for our sunday night plans. now, it won't be a lot trace amounts here as we push it on in through the models. and speaking of models up into the sierra, we are looking at about two to maybe six inches of some fresh powder out there. so just a light system to work through this weekend. that active weather will continue though as we go on into next week. our first official week here of march, so we thought we could get with the shorts and short sleeves this week. well, we are back to those winter coats and some umbrellas as we go through the next couple of days. as those temperatures go from 60 to 50 there, san francisco and along the peninsula, we'll expect some breezy conditions at times. there's also some dangerous surf out by the water

wants more people who look like him competing at a high level. he grew up in oakland and says being different wasn't always easy, but he's embracing that journey both on and off the ice. our today in the bay's janelle wang caught up with him during his latest visit home. harry bridges memorial park pairs figure skater mark sadowsky is back home in oakland and on his home ice rink. oakland ice center. it's been two years since he's been home. it feels nostalgic, almost, to be like, wait, i remember like growing up on this site at 630 in the morning, skating the sessions with all my friends. the 27 year old moved to colorado four years ago to train. this is his first season on team usa, and he actually didn't start skating until he was a teenager. we did sports. i mean, i was a part of chess club. i played the violin. one day i saw disney on ice and i was like, i want to try ice skating. i rushed through as

much work as i could get done before i came down here. thanks for coming. i mean, i was four years old when i was adopted. joe sadowsky adopted mark and his older brother davian in the early 2000. the siblings were in foster care when joe brought them home to oakland. when i first was adopted, i was pretty quiet. i was very timid around my father. just because it was me getting to know someone new. and i was just this kid that had loads of energy. there's not a lot of black figure skaters, so growing up in such a predominantly african american like environment and where i was, it was a little bit more different and a little bit harder. different led to hurtful comments and made teenage mark self doubt himself. kids were like, oh my gosh, you're black and you're you're not playing football. you're not playing basketball. like you must be gay. like you like wearing these glittery costumes. he heard something. tennis superstar venus williams said that changed his perspective on those negative comments. it was

something along the lines of, like, anyone in this room right now can't do what i can do, so why would i care about their opinion? and when i heard that quote, i was kind of like, well, that's the same thing about me. like, i have all these people saying all these negative things about me, but if i get on that ice and go do a double axel, how many people can say they can do what i do? beautiful throw triple toe. i mean, i'm with my partner 5 or 6 hours a day. so watch out for them. a marriage on ice between sadowsky and partner nick degeneres. constant communication. hand signals are important. it's like if i go like this, she knows. like we're doing triple twist. like, if i go like this, she knows we're doing triple salchow. so there's different, like, hand signals that we do just to, like, kind of quicken up our timing. today, mark shares his love for the sport as a coach, his full time day job. i mean, it's truly life changing and a blessing. he's also an ambassador for the nonprofit diversify ice foundation. our goal is to have

relations between our people. and that's why i always begin with to thank your people from our people. president trump spoke with reporters himself before flying to mar a lago for the weekend, saying he doesn't think zelenskyy is serious about a peace deal. i'm looking for peace. we're not looking to go into a ten year war and play games. we want peace. ukrainians in the bay area watched that tense exchange in the oval office very closely, many expressing concern that hopes for the deal between the u.s. and ukraine are now on hold, and that they worry about president trump's threat to pull all u.s. support to ukraine. bay area nonprofit nova ukraine says this comes as some resources to ukraine have already been cut following the us's recent dismantling of usaid. very difficult to see, you know, the

calculation or the rationale behind possibly, you knonow, not signing the agreement and not continuing the aid if russia is not stopped now, the consequences could be very sad and unpredictable. those ukrainians we spoke with say they are encouraged when they see the support from other european leaders, but remain concerned about what will come next from russia. they plan to continue advocating in the u.s. to continue support for ukraine. in san jose last night, many turned out for a panel on what is at stake under the trump administration's changes. the panel was hosted by human agenda usa. that's a local organization whose mission is, to, quote, envision a world where the human needs of all can be met. people last night discussed the effect of the trump administration's new policies, and talked about how critics of those policies can support one another, covered

a wide range of topics, from immigration to the environment to tariffs and human rights. the event was held at san jose's roosevelt community center. human agenda plans to host those meetings monthly. this is a live look in rome at the hospital where the vatican says pope francis had a peaceful night and is resting today. the pope has been battling double pneumonia for the past two weeks after being admitted to a hospital for bronchitis. he had a scare yesterday when the vatican says the pontiff suffered a bronchial crisis. today, the pontiff is said to be alert and aware. the vatican says his condition remains complex. the trump administration says it will put up to $1 billion into renewed efforts to combat the spread of avian flu, which iss part of what's driving up the price of eggs. but will that plan be enough? nbc's erin mclaughlin

put that question to one farmer hit hard. farmer doug corwin's family has been raising ducks on this long island farm for generations. what does this farm mean to you? well, it's my life. it's my heritage. it's an icon of long island breeding. some of the most sought after ducks in the world, supplying the best restaurants in the northeast. that farm is currently under quarantine. but it all came crashing down six weeks ago. we checked these birds three times a day. birds flock together, and all of a sudden i saw a series of dead ones. corwin's ducks tested positive for the bird flu. i never saw anything quite like this. so quick, so fast. i knew that this meant everything would be gone. that same day, he let go of 45 staff members. i rank that up by the death of my parents as the most devastating times of my life. and then you had to euthanize? yes. what was that like? it. sickening. it's

just a horrible, sickening, disgusting day after day feeling for about a week until all of a sudden you have nothing left. 99,000 prized ducks. his entire flock gone, now decaying in a barn on his property. corwin's ducks, now among the more than 166 million birds culled because of the bird flu nationwide since 2022. this week, the trump administration announced its strategy to deal with the crisis and bring down the price of eggs. dedicating $500 million to biosecurity and exploring a new vaccine, though stopping short of approving one. corwin believes for his duck farm, a vaccine is the only way out of this crisis. so is the government's billion dollar strategy enough? no. i know what our biosecurity is here, and i'm not saying it's perfect, but it's pretty darn good. this virus is so in the wildlife. it's so endemic without some type of viral protection, we're not going to get rid of it. corwin's last hope, now 3700

ducklings, hatched last week out of eggs laid before the outbreak on his farm. with this, 140 acres, be more valuable as property. i'm sure it would be. you know, i don't care to be rich. i just want to be a duck farmer. erin mclaughlin, nbc news, long island, new york. back here locally, oakland city leaders say the impending closure of four fire stations is on pause for now. three other oakland fire stations already have closed. they are expected to reopen in june. and it's all because of a massive budget deficit. in response, the city of oakland implemented a hiring freeze, canceled two police academies, and introduced the brownout of multiple fire stations, which means a pause on hiring and using apparatus. now, city leaders say those policies have reduced the projected budget shortfall and opened up new funding to keep those four fire stations open. 39 past the hour on your saturday morning. still to come on today in the

that saying march in like a lion, out like a lamb. it's an old saying to kind of talk about the weather, and it's still talked about up there in the northern part of the country. it's that transitional month between winter and spring, and sometimes it starts with severe weather and then makes out to end on a nice note. now we're not gog to get severe weather, but it's definitely going to change from that spring pattern that we had earlier this week to a more winter like one. spring officially doesn't begin until the 20th. now down here in san jose, we are looking at those low clouds hanging around with peeks of sunshine but much cooler temperatures this afternoon. only in those 60s compared to the 70s and even a few 80s. that madit into the picture when we went on into wednesday and thursday. notice there that into the evening hours, more of those dense clouds coming on in as we track a little bit of rain here to start off the month. you notice it coming close to the coastline there as we go on into dinner time. the day is going to stay dry. you can go run those

errands, take the kids to sports. it will just be cooler and breezy at times as we take it on into tonight. those evening plans may include some light showers through the tri-valley down into san jose, but it will be really light. what i'll be watching going on into tomorrow will be more of that activity starting to spin around, and maybe even bringing a chance of some isolated thunder. but that activity could be before we even wake up and make it out the door. so something to watch there. those spotty showers will continue on into our sunday funday plans, so it will be a wet start with those clouds still staying into the picture. and you see it up there that sierra snow starting to come down. now, what else i would advise you would be to stay away from the coast this weekend. with that, a little bit active weather starting to come on in. we do have that high surf advisory. those breakers could get up into 20ft as we go on through this weekend and even on into monday, so maybe a scale back that fishing trip that you had planned this weekend, even going on into next week, we do have a chance of some active weather still coming around, but you notice that it's a little bit disorganized. so we're going to keep those umbrellas on hand

a different tune to help find a cure for childhood genetic disease. today in the bay's marcus washington brings us his story. well, kira rare diseases are hard to diagnose and often harder to treat. that's because there is lack of funding that leaves a lot of children with little hope of getting better. now there are more than 7000 rare diseases to find in the u.s. as affecting fewer than 200,000 people. 75% of them affect children, and 72% of the rare diseases are genetic. one of those children is rose mcpherson. she suffers from a neurodevelopmental disease that robbed her from her speech and gives her seizures. in order to give her a chance, her rock star dad traded his mic, piano and guitar to launch a public benefit corporation to allow investors to make money and do good. it's not just another

to follow that. ukrainian president zelenskyy is in london today to meet with prime minister keir starmer, after yesterday's heated exchange between president trump, president vance and zelensky himself. yesterday's white house meeting started out as a kickoff for negotiations over ukraine's rare earth minerals, but suddenly turned into that argument. the three men raising their voices over one another inside the oval office. you invited me to have our military equipment. this war would have been over in two weeks. in three days? i heard it from putin in three days. this is something less than two weeks. of course. yes. it's going to be a very hard thing to do business like this. zelensky was asked to leave the white house, cutting his visit short without signing that agreement. oakland city leaders say they will not close four additional fire stations for now. three other stations have already closed and are expected to reopen in june. it's all because of that massive budget deficit. in response, the
