on hold after friday's oval office shouting match between president donald trump and ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky. we are live in washington with what comes next to secure peace. we can't take this lightly. i mean, it starts with just a black mark. then it goes to slurs and terrible language. and where does it end? and east bay business vandalized with hate speech. and it's not the first time the action community members are planning to take following this latest incident. plus, a breezy and chilly start to the day. meteorologist kari hall is tracking your monday morning forecast and our next chance at rain. this is today in the bay. monday morning is here, so let's get the work week started. good morning to you. i'm marcus washington and i'm kira klapper. laura garcia has the morning off. we'll get to that monday morning commute with mike in a moment. but first, pretty in pink meteorologist kari hall is here. we had such a cool down
5:02 am
this weekend. the rain, the wind. it was wild. the way things change so quickly as we went through the weekend. and now we're in the cool weather. here's a live look outside in dublin as you're heading out after a nice warm start to the weekend. then that big drop and the showers. now it is dry as you're heading out and driving to work this morning. so as we go throughout the day, we are going to see those temperatures going from low to mid 40s, but also not warming up as much as what we saw last week. so here's a look at our high for today, matching what we had yesterday afternoon. making it into the upper 50s and only 60 degrees. and this weather is what we'll stick around for quite a while, with another chance of rain coming in tomorrow. we'll talk about that timeline coming up. mike, you are seeing some flashing lights. i was and then they cleared and now we just have a couple of flares mid-span westbound across the san mateo bridge. so those flashing lights must have been overnight maintenance or something going
5:03 am
on. again, the flare is still there, but no one uses that service lane except for folks servicing the san mateo bridge. no slowing on the sensors. both san mateo dumbarton bridge moving nicely. south bay according to schedule. easy drive. just some slowing out of the altamont pass. no surprises as we move up toward contra costa county. highway four, highway 37 still at speed. those will change in the few minutes in the next few minutes. back to you. all right, mike, thanks. we begin this morning with the fallout from that tense oval office meeting between president donald trump and ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky. negotiations between the u.s. and ukraine are on hold. zelensky, meanwhile, spent the weekend in london with european leaders while president trump was at his home in florida. today in the bay's alice barr joins us live from washington. and alice, when we're looking at whether peace talks for ukraine and russia can get back on track, opinions are mixed. yeah, kyra, and it's hard to overstate how much that single meeting on friday in the oval office really
5:04 am
shook up the dynamic between the u.s. and ukraine. european allies are among those that are trying to figure out a path forward now. and over the weekend, we heard from them an announcement of a multi-billion dollar aid package for ukraine, while still working to restore really critical relations between ukraine and the u.s. what's your message to donald trump this morning? the u.s. and ukraine, navigating a diplomatic detour with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy, spending the weekend shoring up european alliances after friday's oval office shouting match the war. not in a good position. you don't have the cards right now with us. you start having cards. cards right. zelensky was asked to leave the white house without signing an agreement to share ukraine's critical minerals with the u.s, seen as a first step toward a peace deal with russian president vladimir putin. president trump posting overnight in part the u.s. should spend less time worrying about putin and more time worrying about gangs, drug lords
5:05 am
and murderers entering our country. friday's meeting devolved when president zelensky insisted his country needs security guarantees to prevent putin from invading again. secretary of state marco rubio adamant russia has to negotiate before there's any peace to secure. but the question now is can we get them to a table to negotiate? that's our goal. don't do anything to disrupt that. zelensky said sunday he's still willing to sign the mineral deal, and believes he can salvage his relationship with the u.s, even as european allies vowed to step up. we've agreed that the u.k, france and others will work with ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting. that as democrats slammed the trump administration's ukraine approach, white house has become an arm of the kremlin, and protests broke out from vermont, where vice president vance was on a family ski trip to seattle, where this ukrainian voiced her
5:06 am
people's fears. i'm terrified. i'm trying to hold my tears right now. but it's not that easy. no easy path to peace. nbc news has learned the pentagon ordered u.s. cyber command to stop offensive cyber operations against russia, according to a u.s. official familiar with the matter. top democrats are slamming the move as a bid to earn putin's favor. a senior defense official would not comment because of operational security concerns. but we do know the agency within homeland security charged with defending against cyber threats, including from russia, and they increase all the time since its mission has not changed. kyra and alice, before i let you go, i'm wondering if you know what the next steps are. can ukraine even carry on without u.s. support? yeah, it's hard to see a path without having the u.s, at least as a backstop. and that's kind of how european allies have been framing this, that they're willing to step up and to take
5:07 am
the lead to prevent further russian aggression at their doorstep. but we've heard a lot of messaging that the u.s. has to be on board. we heard from the british prime minister over the weekend really trying to still keep the u.s. involved, saying he does not believe that the u.s. is an unreliable ally and that whatever agreements they might reach out on the european front, they're planning to coordinate with the u.s. and try to keep them on board. and we know you'll follow it for us. alice barr in washington, thanks so much. well, democrats are blasting the decision by defense secretary pete hegseth to halt u.s. cyber command operations against russia. now, according to an inside source familiar with the matter. heads up gave that order last week prior to president trump's meeting with ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky. and it comes as president trump seeks to reestablish diplomatic ties with russia, seemingly aligning with russian interests in their war against ukraine. u.s. cyber command did not respond to cnbc's request for comment. but the defense department states that there is no greater
5:08 am
priority to secretary schiff than military safety in all operations, including the cyber domain. and all of this unfolds tomorrow night, when president trump will address a joint session of congress at the capitol. now, here's a live look for you this morning. that speech is not technically a state of the union address, coming just weeks after trump took office for his second term. the president's speech is expected to outline his legislation priorities for the next four years, and the war in ukraine will likely be a topic. and you can watch that joint address right here on nbc bay area, airing live at 6 p.m. tomorrow. and then join us for a special edition of nbc bay area news at 9 p.m. well, back here at home. a berkeley business owner says that she has been targeted repeatedly by vandals and its latest incident. she claims that someone tagged her business with anti-islamic graffiti on coinciding with the first night of holy month of

recurring incident in the san francisco bay area. the muslim civil rights organization carey says since october of 2023, they've seen upward trends in reported anti-muslim incidents across the country. carey is offering support to mossad after this latest vandalism incident. it's clear that this was a bias motivated incident, and we want to make sure that it's being investigated in that way. mossad and the berkeley network for palestine will be hosting a vigil monday evening to stand up against hate. they're inviting elected leaders and community members to join them. we can't take this lightly. i mean, it starts with just a black mark. then it goes to slurs and terrible language. and where does it end? alyssa goard. today in the bay. tonight's vigil. alyssa mentioned takes place at the south berkeley senior center. that's on ellis street. it starts at 630. well, big surf along the coast has turned deadly. a man died after being
5:11 am
swept into the water off the sonoma county coast. it happened just after 1130 yesterday morning. this is in gerstle cove. now, the sheriff's office says that two men were standing on the rocks. this is when a wave swept one of those men out to sea. first responders pulled that man out of the water and tried to revive him, but he died there at the scene. his identity has not yet been released. a high surf advisory remains in effect through tonight. want to turn things over now to meteorologist kari hall. so, kari, what does this mean for anyone near the coast? yeah. you do want to stay well away from the water. and as we saw there, just even being on the rocks can be very dangerous as some of the waves come up a lot higher. that's the risk here. and you don't really see it coming. some of those breakers today may still top 20ft. and we're still looking at some of the waves this morning at about 10 to 14ft. as we get this day started, along with the big waves that we've seen coming in, we've also had much cooler temperatures and some high wind
5:12 am
gusts. a live look towards san francisco this morning. we're starting out with upper 40s, only making it into the upper 50s today. but with this storm off the coast, that's going to potentially create some more turbulent conditions along the coastline and also keep the cool weather here in the bay area. we'll talk about when this brings rain coming up in a few minutes. mike's been tracking where we can find slightly lower gas prices. i found our best deal in contra costa county this morning. it's at 409 at marathon and central gas on san pablo avenue. that's better by far than the other prices we're listing here. moving to the south bay, we've got san jose keeping the low for 13 at vargas on hillsdale avenue. and then in marin county, we're jumping up to a much higher low there. low there is 4.37. it's the mill valley is where the best is located at arco on redwood highway. check gasbuddy.com to find the best value near you or where you're going on the roadways. we're going everywhere pretty much at the speed limit, a smooth flow of traffic as we get through the east bay as well. contra costa county, not
5:13 am
showing any real slowing, will give you a live look at the bay bridge itself. a smooth drive into the city, of course. no backup. a chp did warn about gusty winds across many of our bridges. kari says things are calming down now since they were reported by chp overnight. but still just a heads up. back to you. all right. thanks, mike and kari. a controversial new park set to open on san francisco's great highway. but first, it needs a name. next, the competition underway now before it opens in a month. and the price of your burrito staying stable for now. the reason chipotle says its customers won't pay more due to new tariffs. and taking a look at the futures for you this morning, are we like the color of green right. stocks futures jump as the start of march as tesla and bitcoin soar. and the family is growing. we'll check in on this mother eagle's egg in southern california. hatching as we speak. you're watching today

over here, the north bay southbound taillights head out of san rafael and smoothly down to the golden gate bridge without any problems. right now. an easy drive for the north bay start. we'll see if those sensors are starting to change a little farther east. also in the north bay, we'll see those sensors on 37. quarters. how markets are set to open higher today as investors wait for more details on president trump's promised tariffs on mexico and canada. the treasury secretary said over the weekend the situation is still fluid, indicating the administration may not impose the full 25% tariffs that were threatened. now, also in focus today, we get a read on the health of the manufacturing industry with the manufacturing purchasing managers index. we also get a tally of construction spending. in january, president trump announced the creation of a strategic cryptocurrency reserve for the u.s. yesterday. he said it will include bitcoin and

5:20 am
when they took over an abandoned nest that happened to have two cameras installed beside it. over the last eight years, they have laid more than 14 eggs. five of them have hatched. three of the eaglets have survived to adulthood. currently see that the eagles are taking care of three eggs. and yesterday the first crack was spotted on one of them. so here's a live look at that nest right now. unclear when we could see a new baby or if the other two eggs will hatch, but fans can watch what happens on the nest cameras 24 hour live feed. mother nature is so cool. yeah. really impressive. and mother right now is sleeping. yes. tucked away. i don't know why she didn't get up to watch today in the bay. we're watching her. she doesn't know about the app. or maybe she is watching the app. trying to sleep. it's like, turn out the light. leave me alone. i'm about to become a mother for the 15th time. all right, well, let's get started this morning. it's
5:21 am
monday, and it's definitely cooler as we're starting out, heading out the door to temperatures in the mid to upper 40s in walnut creek. it's 48 degrees in palo alto, as well as san francisco and 49 in san jose. now, with the temperatures in the 40s, now we only make it into the upper 50s for much of the bay area today. we briefly touch 60 degrees in martinez and concord, as well as santa rosa and in san francisco. to be 57 degrees tomorrow is kind of the same. we're looking at upper 50s and low 60s and wednesday also not even warmer. in fact, it gets a little bit cooler with spots like morgan hill making it into the mid 50s. so what's happening here? winter has returned. and n now we're seeing that cold air being pulled down as we get these storm systems in a very active pattern here. the first storm system that we had over the weekend is now just over the sierra and areas to the east, and then we have another one that's going to be
5:22 am
approaching for the middle of the week. we are dry for the most part today, but then tomorrow we start to see these scattered showers popping up. and this is not going to be a significant storm, just some off and on rain in the forecast, with the north bay getting the best chance of actually measuring something. and then on wednesday, another wave of rain will pass by. but notice that most of the day will be dry. we just have to keep that umbrella handy for those pop up showers in all throughout the week, we're only going to see a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall. it's mostly just cloudy, breezy, cool, and every now and then we'll get some rain. we're up to about a quarter of an inch in palo alto, as well as about the same rain that could be expected in san jose for the sierra. this is going to be quite a bit of snow that we see about five to possibly 11in, and there's going to be more on the way next week as this storm pattern stays very active. and you know what that means. it's still going to be chilly out there, but we do get a break as we head into the weekend. with warmer
5:23 am
temperatures on friday and saturday. and then rain comes back on sunday. but every few days we can expect to get at least a little bit of some wet weather. and mike, now you're tracking a new incident at the bay bridge. but traffic is light and the incident report is a disabled vehicle. lanes three and four. we count from here. one, two, three, four. we see these two lanes are moving smoothly through the toll plaza. the incident reported just past the toll plaza. clearly not having a net effect over here at the approach. no metering lights yet. the volume just starting to build a bit. so this is great for this portion of the east bay right here off of the maze and getting to the city. see, the incline shows a little bit of slowing for the sensors. no big deal. a little slowing for highway 37. right on schedule. highway four at speed. but we did see a little blip for walnut creek. we'll track that. meanwhile, the rest of the east bay looking really nice. back over to you. lots of green. all right, mike, thanks. well, next here on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. this one's a first for us. a family solar power system attracts unwanted visitors, and the contractor
5:25 am
i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe.

[skateboard sounds] ordinary is the opposite of beautiful. beauty drops our jaws. dilates our eyes. and beauty is something we can create... right now... at floor & decor. in half moon bay, they installed sunrun solar panels on their roof, but those panels brought an unwanted side effect. pigeons nesting underneath, leaving droppings everywhere. they sent us photos. i'm going to spare you that image. vanessa and julian signed another contract
5:27 am
with sunrun to install $1,334 worth of critter guards on their panels. two months went by. guess what? no guards. so vanessa and julian contacted us. we reached out to sunrun. days later, it power washed the roof, installed the guards. here we are. and gave the couple a $600 credit. good work. sunrun did not reply to our request for comment. if you can't get answers from a solar contractor or any other contractor for that matter, you can try the state. in california, you can file a complaint with the contractor state license board right there. cslb. of course, you can try our team as well. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. all right. thanks, chris. we have a lot more ahead at 530, including a violent night outside of an east bay restaurant. four people shot at an investigation now underway. and we're hearing from a witness

federal crackdown. their urgent message as ice operations increase nationwide. plus medicaid under threat, the drastic cuts now being weighed as a key deadline quickly approaches. we are live with the impact it may have on millions of the most disadvantaged americans and forced to leave a safe rv parking site in san francisco, shutting down the ultimatum residents are facing with time about to run out. this is today in the bay. good monday morning to you. march 3rd, the first full week of a brand new month. thanks for joining us. i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. let's get things over to meteorologist kari hall, who's been tracking what we c cn pect weather wise. not too bad to start out the morning. right. and the weekend. saturday, march the 1st mark, the first day of meteorological spring, and then the temperatures dip. so it feels like winter now. and we're
5:32 am
just settling into this pattern this week. so as we're getting started heading out the door clouds this morning and for the most part, we are going to be dry with some times of sunshine. it's still a little breezy out there. temperatures in the upper 40s. we're headed for the upper 50s this afternoon, so that's a big drop from those mid to upper 70s we were talking about last week. and tomorrow we'll see the return of at least some spotty showers. so we'll talk about that coming up. mike you're starting with the drive now through dublin. yeah. and we see more traffic volume. no big concern right on schedule. we'll show you on the maps as well. the timing into dublin where the arrow is getting over in toward the drive out of the altamont pass, which still mild slowing there. a great easy start for the monday on this map, but hang on. let's look at contra costa county. we do have more slowing coming down. six 8242 into pleasant hill, into walnut creek out of the concord feed, which is also showing a slower drive just starting to develop for highway four. so there is a build for that portion of contra costa county. in the north bay, highway 37 extends the slowing
5:33 am
out of vallejo as well, right on schedule. there's some slowing on the incline for the bay bridge, and now we see some slowing approaching the toll plaza, indicating a heavier volume just past those lights that should be turned on about now. we'll double check that with chp, but so far you see the volume. we'll send it right back to you. all right, mike, thank you. well, happening today, a national day of action called a day without immigrants. organizers hoping to show the economic power of the immigrant community, especially in the wake of the ongoing federal immigration crackdown. today in the bay's kris sanchez, live for us outside of one san jose location. and kris, this is where protests are planned. yes. and in fact, marcus, the kids here at overfelt high school are planning to participate. they've been organizing on social media for this day without immigrants, and we expect that they will be doing something later on this afternoon. they are joining that national call for boycotts and protests. and they say the trump administration is launching is a war on immigrants. and last night, a protest of a different kind as dozens of people left
5:34 am
san jose in a caravan bound for the central valley, where a man is being held by ice. the family of says pena. lopez says that he was picked up by ice agents, beaten up so badly he ended up in the hospital and now he is being detained in mcfarland, near bakersfield. in a statement, i said that he was arrested as part of a targeted enforcement and that he was deported in 2013. but critics say pena lopez is being treated without dignity. we want, you know, full release for eunisses and not only for eunisses, but we also want deportations to stop. in general, we're completely against trump's agenda. and yeah, we're completely against the way that ice has handled this entire situation. and ice is like increasing like brutality and just presence overall here in east side san jose. now, the students here at overfelt high school will be in class today. their protest is planned for later on this afternoon around 230. in san jose kris sanchez
5:35 am
today in the bay. all right chris, thank you. marcus. we're going to turn now to a potential new gut punch for those struggling most to make it in the bay. with congress staring down a march 14th deadline to approve a new spending bill, health advocates are fearing drastic cuts to medicaid. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live from san francisco with a look at what's at stake. good morning ginger. good morning kira. will. congress took the first steppy kick starting talks by passing a budget framework along party lines last week. it calls for about $2 trillion in spending cuts. and while it does not lay out where exactly these cuts will be made, some expts believe that it cannot be met without significant cuts to medicaid because of how much it costs. now, medicaid is a last ditch option for coverage for roughly about 80 million poor and disabled americans, including millions of children. it's jointly paid for by states
5:36 am
and the federal government. but it is one of the largest sources of federal spending, costing about $600 billion per year. one leading advocate fears some proposals are calling to potentially gut medicaid. she believes not only would people die without that coverage, but americans covered through other means would likely foot the costs with higher hospital billing charges. when they have lots of patients that are not paying for their care, what they do is they pass that cost on to the people who can pay for care. so it means that the what we all, every everybody else who's not on medicaid, who does have private health insurance will be paying more as as a part of their premiums, more out of pocket costs for their deductibles and co-pays in order to bolster the health care system. well, some republican lawmakers are justifying potential medicaid cuts by
5:37 am
suggesting it's a magnet for fraud. democrats counter that by calling for more oversight. now, meanwhile, other republicans are now listening to their constituents concerns, especially in rural areas where experts say the lack of medicaid would likely hit home the hardest. now, last week, president trump said that lawmakers would not touch medicaid funding. this is kira of a lot of interest in california, given that california is among the states with the largest number of enrollees. so there'll be a lot of eyes watching how this all rolls out in san francisco. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. a lot of eyes and ginger, thanks so much. well, hayward police are looking for a person or persons responsible for shooting and injuring four people. this is outside of a restaurant. happened late saturday night in the parking lot outside of grill by miss g on foothill boulevard. police say officers arrived to find three of the four victims still there. a fourth victim went to the hospital on their own. now, one witness who works nearby saw
5:38 am
two people run past the restaurant, and then a string of gunshots witnessed two individuals running down foothill going towards the centennial. and the apartments this way. and pretty much i heard ten gunshots. sounded like rapid fire, maybe semi-auto. i'm not too sure, and basically watched them go into two separate cars. now, police suspect all four victims to recover. they're asking anyone with information to contact them. happening today, disgraced former san jose city council member omar torres is expected to enter a plea in court. torres faces charges of sexual abuse and child molestation. haitian police arrested him last november in the wake of those accusations. torres resigned from the city council a short time later. an interim council member now fills his council seat until a special election is held on april 8th. well, today is believed to be the final deadline for people living in san francisco's only safe parking site. this is the bay

view vehicle triage center, opened back in 2022 at candlestick point. now, late last year, it's three dozen or so residents were informed that it would close. the city has offered residents their new housing options, which most have accepted. anyone who refuses will likely be ordered to leave. today, as a last resort, their vehicles may be towed or impounded. the city is citing high costs and limited success as two reasons for that closure. just about 39 past the hour, we're going to take a live look outside across the bay area this morning. i actually had to run a little faster to my car this morning. it is chilly out there. meteorologist kari hall joins us now. and you said it is officially the meteorological spring. yeah. usually temperatures starting at march 1st start to warm up, but we had the opposite effect. as temperatures dropped over the weekend and at least the wind will be calming down. i think that was what made that cold kind of cut through your jacket
5:40 am
over the weekend. and it's going to be sunny today. now, by the middle of the week, we'll see clouds with some spotty rain and then a slight warm up as we g closer to the weekend. as you're heading out in oakland, yes, you' feeling that cool air. it's in the upper 40s, and once again, i think it's the wind that makes it feel even colder. but as we go throughout the day, a few peeks of sunshine early and then becoming mostly sunny as our temperatures head close to 60 degrees. i'll be watching those changes for you. but mike, you're seeing the changes now at the bay bridge. yeah, we talked about what you could expect here. changes. there we go. slowing approaching the toll plaza. the backup is going to start forming in the next couple of minutes. visible. by the time we take this next report, we see a little slowing on the sensors as we lose lanes heading up the incline. and the metering lights have been activated there. highway 37 continues a little build out of vallejo. highway four continues to build into concord. but look at this. 242 and 680. that first burst and slowing we saw traveling south cleared once it reached the walnut creek interchange. 680 and 24 moving very smoothly 24

through the caldecott is not a problem. looking ahead, just a reminder for folks for the next couple of weeks, we have no central subway service because of the tunnel repairs. so you use the busses overhead. the t and the cct can take you through the areas back to you. good to know. mike. thanks. 5:40 on your monday morning. it's a make or break moment for an embattled bay area sheriff. coming up, the special election on the peninsula happening this week that likely will determine her fate. when i definitely saw it, i definitely reflected on how when i walk past, see somebody on the street that is homeless, next time, maybe i won't walk past them. and i think that's how i kind of want people to see this movie. hollywood shines a spotlight on the homeless crisi. with some help from the bay area, we speak with one young actor from walnut creek about his new movie and the powerful message he's hoping to share about those struggling without a place to live. plus, so lynette.
