workforce. >> over the weekend, people gathered in yosemite valley, california, calling on elon musk and his department of government efficient sit to pull back on the firings and cuts that have impacted the interior department. >> the cuts are expected to be a key topic of president trump's speech tomorrow night. it will be his first time speaking there in his second term since he took office a month and a half ago. >> leading us off, gabe gutierrez. federal workers were given another ultimatum by elon musk. they were being told to once again list five things they did at work last week or risk termination. do we have any more clarity about what workers were told to respond to that? >> reporter: not a whole lot more clarity. there's still a lot of confusion among the federal workforce about how to respond because several agencies are giving conflicting advice on whether and how workers should respond to the new e-mail from elon

musk. again, as you said, workers getting that e-mail over the weekend for the second time asking them to list five accomplishments over the past week. so this all comes as the trump administration moves forward in its effort to slash the federal workforce. the nooa, even today, the trump administration is facing two hearings regarding its effort to slash the federal workforce. we expect to see more cuts in the coming weeks and months. >> gabe, it's monday. mondays are hard enough, going to work, but there's video that shows at the department of housing and urban development, a long line. staff having to wait for up to an hour just to get into their offices. what's going on there? >> reporter: workers received an e-mail friday saying this might be happening. essentially, they're now being required to go through metal detectors as they go into work. some of the workers there at hud

told us they waited in line for 40 to 60 minutes. this comes not just logistical changes, but this all comes as the trump administration not only cutting the federal workforce, but also changing security protocols. i should mention by the way that hud last week was the site where there was that fake video, a prank, ofa fake video of elon musk and donald trump that somehow was able to be shown on tv monitors inside hud. we don't have confirmation that this has anything to do with that, but the workers had a lot of change this morning. >> gabe, there has been reaction from the world from what we saw on friday, that clash in the oval office between president trump, president zelenskyy. president trump had more to say about zelenskyy and that rare earth minerals deal today. >> reporter: yes, that's right. actually, the president taking questions in the roosevelt room just right now. answering questions about

whether that rare earth minerals deal that was expected to be signed on friday and wasn't, whether that deal is dead. he said no, it's not, and he expects to speak more about it in his joint address to congress tomorrow. the president is stressing he believes president zelenskyy of ukraine should be more appreciative and earlier today, the president fuming when he heard that president zelenskyy had said that he believed a peace deal was very, very far off. the president, president trump rather, posting on social edia, this is the worst statement that could have been made by president zelenskyy and america will not put up with it much longer. >> join nbc news tomorrow night as we bring you president trump's address and the democratic response. coverage begins at 8:00 p.m. eastern.

firefighters in south carolina are gaining ground on wildfires that spread across the state this weekend. smoky skies hanging over the state today, but here's what it looked like in myrtle beach on saturday. state officials say some 1600 acres have burned so far. strong wind gusts have fueled the spread of more than 170 fires, which are now down to five actively burning. joining us now, pria shriver. we were showing the video from over the weekend, all the flames. now that there's an evacuation order lifted in myrtle beach, does that mean people can go back to their homes? >> reporter: that's right. it was a scary situation over the weekend. 175 fires burning, which prompted the governor of south carolina to issue a state of emergency to try to get resources to those first responders as quickly as possible. at the peak of this situation, there were the national guard

army black hawk helicopters deployed to the fires, dumping 600 gallons of water. dozens of neighborhoods in the myrtle beach area were all issued evacuation orders. that zone widened on sunday, but it was lifted as of yesterday evening. so many residents are being told they can now safely return to their homes, but we're still seeing tons of smoke in the area, which fire officials are saying could be a concern to anybody who has any sort of respiratory condition. so they're saying if you do, you are prone to any sort of respiratory condition, to stay away for now, guys. >> i know it's not just south carolina facing the wildfires. what else is going on across the south? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. we also saw an incredible fire burning in polk county, north carolina. i think you guys have video of it right here. about 500 acres burning there. they're dealing with much of the

similar conditions that we saw over in south carolina. dry and very, very windy. we're also being told that fire officials in north carolina that while they don't know the official cause of that fire, they are seeing a lot of these fires in places where we saw debris from hurricane helene. so it's very interesting to see all of these causes of climate change sort of simultaneously come together to create these infernos, guys. >> thank you. new orleans is gearing up for mardi gras tomorrow. revelers have already begun celebrating as parades roll through the city streets, but this year, new orleans is taking extra precautions, ramping up security to unprecedented levels following the new year's day terror attacks. jesse kirsch joins us from new orleans. we spoke to you a lot before the super bowl in new orleans last month about the security preparations. how's it looking now? >> reporter: yeah, so, similar

level of federal resource support here this time, but it's a different kind of event because with mardi gras, you have a lot of this. floats, parades. that means tens of thousands of people lining parade routes that stretch or miles. when you look at protecting that, that's different than just protecting the bourbon street corridor where you can block off with hard barricades or if you're protecting the stadium like for the super bowl. officials told us this is a different kind of event. something that's seen as more challenging by the customs and border force compared to the super bowl because you are looking at longer stretches of geographical territory that have those vulnerabilities. i talked to local police yesterday, they told us ey've added new barriers. added a device to slow down traffic when it is still moving so a vehicle couldn't get a running start if someone tried to do a repeat of what happened

tiktok. frank mccourt said he will be the strategic adviser to buy the platform. he submitted a bid d in earl january with plans to allow users to have control of their data. american airlines is planning to test inflight internet next week. it's unclear if the carrier will expand the service, but the move comes as american tries to win back customers after it failed on a business strategy last year. and the world's biggest food chain isn't mcdonald's or starbucks. it's a chinese restaurant. they say they plan to keep growing. >> tiktok, one of those buyers. >> frank mccourt is the one we interviewed about his bid and

members it lost in a deadly plane crash in washington, d.c. a little more than a month ago. >> in a two-hour special this past weekend, figure skating stars performed in an exhibition meant to be a tribute on the ice. here's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: in the wake of tragedy, they came together to do what they do best. world champions and olympic gold medal winners. some, simply the greatest of all time. >> this event i hope will heal and give strength to our skaters. >> reporter: the benefit, legacy on ice, honoring 67 victims including 28 members of the figure skating community who died in the midair collision on january 29th. 11 were skaters. between the ages of 11 and 16. >> this one just felt so unfair and different. because it's children. and it's coming from the development camp, which means they're the promise. >> what impact does that have on u.s. figure skating?

>> the loss is significant. at the same time, the other kids in that training camp will remember these skaters forever. >> reporter: among those killed, husband and wife coaching team who won the 1994 pairs world championship. on sunday, their only child, 23-year-old max, giving an emotional performance in honor of his performance. max has taken over coaching his parents' athletes. >> it's helped him through it. >> reporter: for some of these skaters, this is not the first tragedy they have lived through. in 1961, a catastrophic plane crash in belgium claimed the lives of the entire u.s. figure stating team. >> the 1961 crash really affected me. my coach passed away in that plane crash. i was 12. >> reporter: did this immediately put you back to your

12-year-old self? >> absolutely. but we rose up. >> reporter: their sport is defined by that kind of grit. >> it's an important time for us to all be together. >> it's a big part of our identities. we fall down, we get up. >> got to be tough. >> and we help each other get up. >> reporter: that is why these greats dropped everything to come to washington, d.c. what do you hope this event will do for the family and friends who are grieving in the wake of this unbelievable tragedy? >> not alone. >> yeah, really showing that there will be a legacy that their memory continues on with and will continue to be a part of our figure skating family. >> reporter: stephanie gosk, nbc news. it is a big day for the future of space exploration. >> spacex is preparing to launch another test flight of its largest rocket, the starship, later today in texas. you may remember the last launch

in january ended with part of the rocket breaking up in mid flight. >> today, we are also getting our first images of the moon from a private spacecraft. the blue ghost landed on the moon's surface early sunday morning. here's tom costello. >> reporter: this is a very important test now of elon musk's spacex starship and as we've been reporting, starship is the biggest rocket ever built. 400 feet tall. we have had other test flights but many ve really ended in disappointment including the one in january when it blew up over the atlantic ocean. after an investigation, the faa has cleared starship to fly again today. 6:30 p.m. eastern time. the goal here is to essentially approve the technology. this is the rocket that they want the use to put humans on the moon within the next two to three years then eventually take humans on to mars. as a part of this test flight, they will deploy some starlink

satellite dummy satellites in space to prove they can do that from a moving rocket that's already in space and then in addition in that trademark move that spacex has, they will bring the booster back down and hopelly it will be caught yet again in that kind of pincher move that we've seen. the chop stick move where they grab it right there on the launch pad at the tower. that's going to be critical to see if this mission goes off as planned and then they can continue to build on success as they head towards artemis and a moon landing. separately, there's another lunar mission underway right now. this is a robotic mission. it is called blue ghost. they landed successfully on the moon in the very early morning hours. it's about the size of a small car and what's good about this one is it didn't tip over. you may recall a year ago, another company had a robot land on the moon. it immediately tipped over and therefore didn't get a lot of good data. this one landed just fine.

than tylenol rapid release gels. because advil targets pain at the source of inflammation. so for faster pain relief, advil the pain away. this is the fast forward on nbc news daily. i'm candice nguyen. former san jose city councilman omar torres back in court this morning. you'll remember torres resigned and then was arrested on election day last year. it was part of an investigation into alleged lewd acts with a minor. torres is now facing three felony charges of sexual assault. today, he entered a not guilty plea. nbc bay area's kris sanchez explainsow this case is playing out. omar torres is appearance was brief and no cameras were allowed. but i can tell you he looked different. his beard was shaved off, his hair was buzzcut, and he was wearing a brown prison jumpsuit. he entered a plea of not guilty

to those three felony counts of child sexual assault, and is due to appear in court once again on april 28th for a preliminary hearing. that's the hearing in which a judge determines whether there is enough evidence to move forward to trial. this is torres in a prior court appearance. in november, he requested to be released on bail, but the judge said he continued to be a danger to the community, to minors in particular, and denied bail. so torres remains in custody. torres was under investigation for sexual misconduct with a man who was a minor when that relationship began. torres told police that that man is now trying to blackmail him. but when that investigation became public, a relative came forward to say he was molested by torres in the 1990s when he was a child. now, if convicted of these three felony counts, omar torres could spend up to 24 years in prison. in san jose. kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. thanks. kris. an elementary school in sonoma county was forced to close today after extensive vandalism was found

inside. so our cameras could only see outside the school this morning. it does not show where the vandalism happened or what it involved, but we did see police carry out what appears to be evidence bags. the school district says it sent a letter to families asking students to stay at home while police investigate, and the damage gets cleaned up. it's not clear if the school will reopen tomorrow. investigators are asking for anyone with information to reach out to the rohnert park police department. oakland police are investigating a serious crash that left a car wrapped around a pole. it happened around four this morning near 54th avenue and international boulevard. we know that the driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition. nbc bay area sky ranger was over the scene just a couple of hours ago, and it captured video of the horrific scene. the cause of the crash still under investigation. we are having a cool start to this week. temperatures are dipping back into the 50s in some parts of the bay area. here's meteorologist kari hall with the

berkeley are sounding the alarm after a muslim owned business was tagged with anti-muslim graffiti over this past weekend. the oer of berkeley community physical therapy found the paint saturday. she says the vandalism happened on the first full day of the holy month of ramadan, and that this is the third time this has happened. berkeley police are not commenting right now, so tonight, a vigil will be held in berkeley to stand against what organizers are calling a hate crime. it's being held at the south berkeley senior center on ellis street, and it starts at 6:30 p.m. today could be the final deadline for people living in san francisco's only safe parking site. the bay view vehicle triage center opened in 2022 at candlestick point. it provides safe parking for those experiencing homelessness or living in their cars or rvs. last year, the city informed its roughly three dozen residents that it's closing. the city offered them new housing options, which most accepted. anyone who refused will likely be ordered to leave today, and their vehicles may be towed or

city of manheim. policesay the driver was arrested and that they are investigating whether he acted alone. the area has been busier than usual lately with celebrations for the carnival season. a fedex cargo plane was forced to make an emergency landing after catching on fire over the weekend. this video taken from the ground in new jersey shows flames shooting out the plane's right engine. local officials say the jet struck a bird as it was taking off from newark liberty international airport. the pilot was able to safely land back at the airport just moments later. three people on board the plane, three were on board i should say, and luckily no one was hurt. we have an update on the healthof pope francis. the vatican says he had a setback today after experiencing two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency. that's when the body is having trouble getting enough oxygen. he is receiving supplemental oxygen support. he was alert the entire time.

he is battling double pneumonia and has been hospitalized since february 14th. the pope will not lead the ash wednesday services this week. authorities in arizona say the investigation into a deadly weekend highway pile up will take some time. it happened saturday on i-10 west of phoenix as a dust storm was moving in. the arizona department of public safety says four people died and 13 others were taken to the hospital. the crash involved 12 vehicles including multiple tractor trailers. steve patterson has been following this. what more are we learning about the crash and do we have more information on the people who were hurt? >> reporter: as you said, horrific crash. 12 vehicles involved. so a lot of casualties here as well. eight people injured. five were treated and released from the hospital. that's good news. one person remaining there being checked out. and then two people remaining in

critical condition that's ton top of the four who have unfortunately died. the investigation continues. we know obviously there was the national weather service reports of a dust storm in the area. dust low visibility warnings to travelers specifically in that corridor of i-10. we know investigators have made statements about road conditions being poor. about visibility in that stretch being influenced from being poor and wind speeds in that corridor. so investigators had their focus on that including obviously any possible warnings that these cars may have been in. as you also mentioned, of course, very early on in the investigation. we won't know what the direct cause is for a while and until those investigators can start talking to the people involved in that awful, awful crash. >> steve, thank you. the man charged in the mass shooting at a july fourth parade nearly three years ago has now

pleaded guilty. 24-year-old robert crimo changed his plea this morning right before opening statements in the trial were supposed to begin. he pleaded fwlt to guilty to 69 counts of murder and attempted murder. the shooting in highland park, illinois, killed seven people. injured nearly 50 others. last year, he turned down a plea deal. he faces life in prison and is expected to be sentenced next month. the senate is set to confirm linda mcmahan. if confirmed, she will take the helm of a department president trump has vowed to dismantle. they have not said how or when they would shut it down. we received a question from a viewer asking us to explain the function. what does this agency do and why is it under attack? here's the department of education simply explained. >> put simply, the department of

>> you want to make sure you're careful and approach it appropriately. there are some exemptions. those are medical conditions, pregnancy, young children are exempted from fasting during this time period, but for the rest, a few ings. you're going to start off with a prefasting meal. a good, healthy meal that's going to sustain you throughout the day. focusing on the whole grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins that can help sustain you through the day. then a big thing is since you can't take in liquids during that time, you want to make sure you pre hydrate and not just try to catch up amp afterwards. that means drinking plenty of liquids in the morning, probably avoiding caffeine. one thing to remember is during the day, you're not going to be getting that caffeine so for the first few days, you might have caffeine withdrawal and headaches. be careful with that. >> give yourself some grace

then. you mentioned the time when people are breaking fast. are there foods to avoid eating to make it easier? >> you want to make sure that when you break that fast at the end of the day, you don't binge eat. it can upset your stomach and cause issues once you stop fasting and hroughout the night. one of the things, start with that glass of water then go off to the traditional dates before you have your evening prayer can help you get your stomach under control and then have balalance meal. grains, fruits, nuts. avoiding those sugary foods can help sustain you. not just at night, but going into the morning for your pre fast meal and throughout that fasting period as well. >> what about exercising? should you exercise while fasting? >> that's one of the big questions because this is such a sustained period of time. not just hours during the day,

but the amount of days after days. what most experts recommend is to pull back on the exercising a little bit and just exercise a bit during the day and not necessarily running those marathons or extensive bike rides. maybe some quick walks. quick exercise programs, but also let your body be its guide. if it starts telling you you're going too far, start pulling back on that. you can do this in a healthy fashion, but make sure you don't overextend. >> this is a practice to bring people closer to their god. so if we know someone who is fasting, how can we support them even if we're not engaging? >> a couple of things. you probably are going to know someone who's fasting because there are so many people who observe ramadan and the fasting. be considerate of their plans, up if you work with them.
