tuesday. i'm marcus washington. all right. get your indulgences in, i guess. i'm laura garcia. we're going to check that morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but let's talk about this forecast with kari. yeah, it looks really good out there. although we have started out with some clouds, some milder temperatures and a little bit of rain. as we take a look at storm ranger, that's our mobile doppler radar. and that red scan that you're seeing there. most of the rain for the peninsula has now moved over toward the bay, and then we're seeing some hit or miss rain that's been moving through sonoma county just now, starting to approach napa county. so we've seen the rain. that's just enough to wet the roadways and make that commute a little bit more slick on your way out the door this morning. but overall, we've seen other areas starting to dry out a little bit after some early morning quick passing showers. we'll have a better chance of rain at this time tomorrow morning, mainly from palo alto on southward, and that's where we could see some more rain coming through, with rain chances continuing into
6:01 am
wednesday afternoon as well as early thursday morning. we'll talk more about this in a few minutes, but mike says the commute is on, is on, and it filled in the toll plaza within the last ten minutes. saw the lanes. it was filled in here last time we took the check with the camera filled in all the way. now back to the 880 overcrossing and a little slowing off of that overcrossing as well. we have that build feeding in off the upper east shore freeway, a smooth drive, the blip we always see coming in off of the san rafael side is eastbound. that is a crew that typically heads out there to do some maintenance work. it's opposite your commute, but that slowdown is what folks are used to. heading over to richmond out of richmond is where we're going to see the next build over the next few minutes. over here. 242 holding steady. that gives us good hope. 680 is a good drive down through walnut creek and 24 through the caldecott tunnel without any problems. the tri-valley shows a nice mild build, so the dublin interchange looks great. castro valley wide does show some slowing. san mateo dumbarton bridges pick up the volume, but no major concerns in san jose holds with that first slowing right around oakland. back to you. thank you mike. tonight, president trump
6:02 am
plans to lay out his legislative priorities and outline his vision for the future. we have a live look at capitol hill, where the president will address a joint session of congress. now, this comes as overnight new u.s. tariffs impacted goods and they take effect. the u.s. also cut off military aid for ukraine today in the bay's alice barr. joining us live from washington this morning. and alice, the thing here is protests over government workers being fired. well that's growing across the country. marcus and laura, there's a whole lot that is on the table going into this joint session of congress inside the going to be fired federale are workers who are there as guests of democratic lawmakers. but tariffs really likely to gain a lot of attention. president trump says the ones that took effect just after midnight it aimed are aimed at stopping the flow of fentanyl into the u.s. and now america's top trading partners are responding, with u.s. consumers expected to feel impacts from the back and forth
6:03 am
this morning, trade tensions ramping up with china announcing retaliatory tariffs on some u.s. food imports. canada vowing similar steps in response to new u.s. tariffs that took effect overnight, including a blanket 25% tariff on all imported goods from canada and mexico, and an additional 10% on chine imports. what they have to do is build their car plants, frankly, and other things in the united states, in which case they have no tariffs. american companies now bracing to eat added costs or pass them along to consumers. this michigan auto parts producer imports 30% of its materials from canada. it means dramatically increased costs, so we might not be able to recover. at the same time, president trump pausing military aid to ukraine, according to two u.s. officials after a public clash, the president asked what it would take to restart negotiations with ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky
6:04 am
toward a peace deal with russia. i just think he should be more appreciative because this country has stuck with them through thick and thin. democrats urging swift action without our assistance. this gets very, very hard for the ukrainians. and by the way, it gets easy for russia. this is what russia wants. democratic lawmakers also inviting fired federal workers to president trump's address to congress tonight. aaron hill lost her job with the cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency after her boss assured her she was safe. we have justified why you're vital to the organization. she wants to put a face to the nation's federal workforce. when you work for this country, you feel a pride in the work that you do. as president trump prepares to defend his vision for the country. and a senior administration official tells nbc news, the theme for tonight's address will be the renewal of the american dream.
6:05 am
the democratic rebuttal comes from michigan senator elissa slotkin, likely to hit on rising prices and a looming government shutdown deadline next week. laura, always so much going on, alice. thanks for the coverage. well, coming up this morning on the today show, savannah guthrie is liverom washington, d.c. to lead team coverage ahead of president trump's joint address to congress. today's show has everything you need to know about trump's first primetime addresss to the nation in his second term as president. that begins at 7:00 this morning, right after today in the bay. and a heads up for other viewers. there is a news cast change for you tonight. this is following president trump's joint address. there is an episode of deal or no deal island, followed by a s special9 p.m. newscast and ten. dateline is set to be followed by our regular scheduled newscast at 11 p.m. and new for you this morning. south bay's transit workers may not show up to work today, as the contract has ended
6:06 am
overnight, with no agreement with vta today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us now from san jose. so, kris, what kind of impact are we talking about here? well, marcus, vta is telling commuters to make alternate plans for the next couple of days until they figure out what happens next. now that the contract expired with no agreement. that is the message from vta, as they were not able to reach an agreement with its union workers. although the two sides have been meeting twice weekly, they just could not bridge a big pay gap. according to the mercury news, among the asks, the union wants 24% in pay increases over three years. vta's most recent offer was 9% over the next three years. the amalgamated transit union represents about 1500 bus and light rail operators and other workers, and members did vote in favor of a strike. and the union also got the green light from the south bay labor council, so they may not be a strike today.
6:07 am
however, it does appear that a strike may be looming in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right. certainly i know, chris. you'll stay on top of that. and we will too. thank you. well, happening today, hundreds of north bay students set to go back to class after their campus was vandalized so bad administrators had to cancel class. the break-in happened early yesterday morning at john reed elementary in rohnert park. vandals damaged 20 classrooms. reed elementary hasn't given specific details on the damage, but school officials expect the repairs to be costly. they're also now looking into more security options. police are still looking for the people who did it. let's take a look for you right now at bourbon street in new orleans. this is courtesy of earth cam, so get ready. fat tuesday celebrations taking center stage in the big easy. but the weather may put a damper on those festivities. several mardi gras parades have already been moved up to earlier times. that's because severe storms with strong winds are expected with gusts up to 60mph. former
6:08 am
opd and current new orleans police chief and kirkpatrick says that she is not taking any chances. the national weather forecast turns from a watch for severe wind to a warning. i will cancel the parades at that point. no matter what time that is now the severe weather is also condensing and in some cases, outright canceling some of those mardi gras events. wow. so they're keeping a close eye certainly on the system there and the beads here. i'm sure. yeah. we say laissez les bons temps rouler. and you're going to say that in new orleans for mardi gras. no, exactly. you just say it so well. yeah, yeah. so they don't have a lot of time to let it roll, because there's going to be storms rolling in. we can see the line of severe weather that's moving through texas, and that's going to be
6:09 am
coming in. and they're expecting, as they mentioned, some of those high winds. and yeah, that may put an end to the party very early this evening. and of course we have celebrations here in the bay area. if you're going to be out and about in san francisco, it's going to be cloudy today. much better weather. and we're going to see temperatures holding steady in the 50s into the afternoon with some peeks of sunshine. we're just watching out for some spotty rain, and it's going to be in the upper 50s and low 60s for today. and tomorrow may be a little bit cooler as we deal with more waves of rain coming in, and it's been cooler than normal. that's going to continue into thursday as well, as we get some more of those pop up showers and possibly some thunderstorms. so we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up. mike is saving you a little bit of money at the gas pump this morning. we found one price, one that went down. we're looking at a sinker 3 to 3.99. it's down a dime. so it's below four bucks from yesterday's in pinole. same place. marathon central gas on san pablo avenue is the best in
6:10 am
contra costa county. then in santa clara county, we still lead with the prices. in san jose, the best is 413, like yesterday. but today we'll call out most shop on camden avenue. and then in the north bay. vallejo has the best in solano county. it's 419 at national petroleum on springs road. you check some prices. hopefully there's some changes in your favor. gasbuddy.com. on the roadway we have those changes. of course, it just means more traffic usually in the south bay i mentioned oakland. i'm in oakland road. that's north 101. that's slowing. that typically ends there has ended now for the first burst about 40 after the hours when we're seeing traffic kick in once again. and that will stick for the morning through the south bay. but no surprises there. we're looking at oakland. we talked about oakland road. this is oakland, the city. i know the difference. back to you. all right. good to know. we know you do like ten after the hour. jumping into action. a quick thinking hayward police officer saves the life of an 11 month old girl. next, the incredible moment that was all caught on camera. the target ceo

6:13 am
6:14 am
good tuesday morning. right now it's 13 past the hour and we're checking out livermore. it's going to stay mostly cloudy today. and the sun just peeking out with a slight chance of rain. and our temperatures stay in the 50s today. a little bit on the cool side with a better chance of rain tomorrow. we'll talk about that. and looking ahead to a sunny weekend coming up in a few minutes and brightly lit from the headlights and the sun coming up here. richmond bridge heading over towards san rafael. typical buildup as we expect. your westbound bridges show the congestion. of course, the bay bridge toll plaza is also full. as well. good morning. very happy tuesday to you. wells fargo says it's going to work to end its investments in loans that are net zero emissions as esg. that's environmental, social and governance falls out of favor.
6:15 am
markets hit hard on monday because it became evint those new tariffs against canada and mexico really were going to take effect. target's ceo says higher prices could come as soon as this week. 25% tariffs against mexican products 25% on most canadian products, 10% on canadian energy. those are now, in effect, the current tariffs on china largely doubled. further, china has now increased its tariffs against us in response to the tariffs we put on them. here's the president speaking monday. it's going to be very costly for people to take advantage of this country. they can't come in and steal our money and steal our jobs and take our factories and take our businesses and expect not to be punished. and they're being punished by tariffs. it's a very powerful weapon. now, the thing about jobs and factories and business is in the short term, we expect the tariffs to hurt a
6:16 am
lot of those here in america. case in point, carmakers one report from anderson economic group estimates the tariffs will add $4,000 to the price of an average crossover suv. and that's the price you pay. the today show will have more on the effect on car prices coming up at seven. and yes, you're going to pay more for avocados. but the main worry is not guacamole. it's the factories and the jobs. and now retaliatory tariffs mexico promised this morning retaliatory tariffs against american products will start sunday. i mentioned china added new tariffs on our products, particularly american grown food like wheat and chicken and beef. that makes our products harder to sell to them. a republican senator from kansas held a town hall with his constituents this week, and it got rowdy. farmers among them, for sure. people worried about tariffs and government cuts to agricultural funding, among others, though
6:17 am
senator roger marshall says the people objecting were, quote, democratic operatives. but yes, even ford has warned they will have to do layoffs because of the way the cars are manufactured. even american cars manufactured in america using foreign parts. they'll be more expensive. but it's interesting, like honda, for example moving now to indiana. oh, absolutely. bmw is in south carolina, but those are, you know, ten year bills. yeah. yeah. all right. thanks. well, a hayward police officer was at the right place at the right time and is now being hailed as a hero after saving a choking toddler. this video, edited and posted by hayward police department, shows a distraught family running up to officer emilio gonzalez last month, and they handed him their limp 11 month old daughter. the officer grabbed the girl, put her on her stomach and hit her several times on the back, dislodging a rubber hair tie blocking her airway. she started to cry and her family reacted. they were very emotional. her

father started hugging me. the baby was hugging me. i mean, it was. yeah, it was a little emotional. definitely. i was happy to see that they were able to go home with their baby. you know, didn't have to go to the hospital. well, how's this for timing as well? officer gonzalez says he had just received additional medical training about how to respond to a choking child. a week before he helped this little girl. all about timing, right? perfect. well, trending this morning, a major off season handoff for three high schools, courtesy of the 49ers. now, the team this week donated $20,000 in workout and football equipment to kathleen mcdonald wilcox and santa clara high schools, all located in santa clara. this is a part of the team's new long term effort called 49ers cares. that effort is designed to boost community programs in levi's home city of santa clara. wow. that looks like like professional equipment. those things you run at, right?
6:19 am
exactly. i'm sure they have what i call them to things. yeah. it works. all right. all right. let's talk about. okay. not football weather just yet. baseball is around the corner. spring. but a little taste of winter. yeah, we're getting some much needed rain, and we're going to see it off and on over the next couple of days, temperatures have dropped. we're just settling in to the cooler weather. but when we talk about ring, we also talk about allergies. and we're seeing a high amount of pine, cedar and oak pollen floating through the air. so if you've been sneezing, this is what you're allergic to. one of these mold is fairly low at this point, but we are going to see some light showers moving through. and usually a good soaking really helps clear a lot of the pollen out of the air temporarily. but we don't really see that the rain has been so light and it's been moving from west to east. so now we're seeing it moving through napa right now and saint helena over toward vallejo. we are going to see this also moving off towards the east. otherwise it is partly cloudy. we're not seeing a lot of rain elsewhere. and then our
6:20 am
temperatures today will make it into the upper 50s and low 60s, a high of 59 in martinez, 60 in san jose and 59 in santa rosa. looking at tomorrow's forecast, really not much of a change temperature wise, but it gets even cooler on thursday as that chance of rain continues and we are going to see a mostly cloudy sky. looking at our hour by hour outlook doesn't show a lot of activity for now, but look at 5:00 tomorrow morning, some pretty widespread rain that may be heavy at times and then it quickly moves out. we take a break for a few hours, but then some more pop up showers by early thursday morning. and then after that things look to quiet down for a little bit. but we are seeing the heaviest rain this time south of the golden gate bridge, so the north b may only see a few hundredths of an inch of rain over the next couple of days. while in palo alto, we could see about a quarter inch of rain and possibly about a half inch in some parts of the east bay. looking at sierra snow, it's going to be about 3 to 6in over
6:21 am
the next few days and the weekend is looking nice. everything clears up, temperatures warm up, but it will be cold in the mornings. starting out with some upper 30s but headed for the upper 60s and we'll see some more significant, possibly stronger storms next week. and mike, you're saying that even though it's tuesday, it looks like it's flowing on schedule? yeah, it's on schedule. that doesn't mean it's clear. it just means it's moving well to the bay bridge toll plaza where the backup is here, built up right on, as we expect, slowing down the east shore freeway at the bridge from richmond over to san rafael and highway 37, highway four behind me. a note here, that green highlighting up here. that's where kerry's been talking about that rain coming through. and so there are some damp roadways reported north of san rafael. keep that in mind as a possibility where you're driving. meanwhile, over here, we see more slowing coming off the castro valley y for 880 south down in past hayward and 92 and then continuing down toward fremont. not yet really hitting union city or fremont. as far as the areas on those freeways. not a major concern. vasco roads actually been
6:22 am
holding steady at about 2820 nine minutes from marsh creek down to 580 out of contra costa county. but in contra costa county, we've seen the drive time for highway four build a bit. dublin moves smoothly, though. once you're out of the altamont pass. 580 goes well. back to you. thanks so much, mike. opening the door to green careers for a new generation. next here on today in the bay, the partnership between bay area schools and local businesesses hoping to inspire students to consider jobs, focusing on and addressing the major issues impacting our climate in crisis.

today in the bay and turning to our climate in crisis, some bay area schools will take part in green career week. this week was created by nonprofit seed your future to inspire students to connect with them in businesses and focus on agriculture, plants and flowers. for example, the san francisco flower market will be working with schools in the san ramon valley unified school district. organizers say they hope this week not only unveils different career paths, but helps everyone realize the importance of green careers on our food supply and air quality. it gives you that fulfilling sensation of you fed somebody, you clothed somebody. you know, these flowers that you're growing are impmpacting somebods physical, mental and emotional

consumers and the retaliation already being seen overnight. plus a live look for you at the u.s. or at the white house this morning. we're going to take you to that message. the president plans to deliver during tonight's joint address to congress peninsula residents heading to the polls. a special election could end up deciding the fate of an embattled sheriff. we're live this morning outside her office with the important questions now hanging in the balance. this is today in the bay. good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get you caught up with what's happening with that weather today. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those conditions and looks like some rain coming our way. yeah, it's been very light and spotty. not all of us have seen the rain, and it's quickly moving on through. it will be clearing out in the next few hours and just leaving us with some cloudy skies thrghout the day. so that's a look at storm ranger. we can see the activity that moved through a little
6:31 am
while ago. all associated with this system that is going to continue to bring us more clouds throughout the day. so as we take a look at san jose, you can see the sun just trying to try to peek through a little bit. we're going to see some peeks of sunshine today and temperatures just briefly touching 60 degrees. but overall it will be cool and we will see a a chancef rain in the forecast increasing as we go into tomorrow morning. so we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. sounds good. thanks, kari. well, president trump says students participating in illegal protests will be expelled in prison or deported. scott mcgrew joins us now. he says he'll cut off federal aid to colleges that don't comply. yeah, which is pretty much all of them, right? from cal berkeley to san jose state to private schools like santa clara, saint mary's, which gets grants and federal student financial aid would all be cut off if they did what the president didn't like. the president said on social media this morning he would cut funding for colleges that did not expel american students
6:32 am
involved in what he called illegal protests. he didn't specify what made them illegal. he also repeated a promise to deport foreign students studying here who participate in the same protests. no masks, he wrote in all caps and then added, thank you for your attention to this matter. now there are obvious constitutional issues with his plans. free speech being tops. president trump has also paused all weapons to ukraine. you'll recall he was impeached for attempting to do so. the last time he was president. but that action included a quid pro quo, saying to zelensky, you investigate the biden family. i'll send the weapons this time around. no such unethical behavior, the president being much more straightforward. there is no this or that, just a cut off of weapons, promised ukraine. a kremlin spokesperson this morning praised the move, calling it a path to peace. this, of course, comes after
6:33 am
that incredibly awkward white house meeting where zelensky was called in to sign a deal that would have given away much of his country's mineral rights. but he never signed it because the white house asked zelensky to leave. vice president vance joined trump in criticizing ukrainian president and defended his actions monday on fox news channel, saying he had wanted to speak to zelensky in private. but the president wanted to make the conversation public. we're having this meeting. obviously there are 100 television cameras here. let's try to have this conversation in private. and then the president, as we kept on going back and forth, i tried again to say, well, maybe we should have this conversation in private. and the president was like, no, actually, i don't want to have it in private anymore. i want to have this actual conversation in public for the american people to see. and i do think that there was just a certain sense of there was a lack of respect, there was a certain sense of entitlement. i mentioned arms to ukraine, but senator mitch mcconnell is raising the alarm about american

defense spending, saying because congress hasn't passed a new budget. defense spending is frozen at 2024 levels. they don't account for inflation or new projects. in an op ed in the post, mcconnell warns, quote, we cannot defeat tomorrow's enemie. with yesterday's budgets. the u.s. supreme court will hear a case today brought by the mexican government, which is suing to stop the flow of american made guns into mexico. president trump says we have a problem with mexican drugs flowing north. president sheinbaum says they have a problem with american arms flowing south. the case will center on whether mexico or anybody else has the right to sue gun makers who have special protection under the law. the president will speak tonight to a joint session of congress. we're watching for what he plans to ukraine, a defense of doge elon musk's cut to the government. the president speaking about a new chip investment in this clip. but at the same time, bloomberg reports the office in charge of the chip
6:35 am
act that brought the investment was cut by 2/5. and of course, we're expecting to hear more about tariffs. there are new tariffs on canada and mexico. those took effect today on china. there's an increase. china responded with its own new tariffs on americann things. mexico says retaliatory tariffs will come on sunday. laura so much going on. thank you scott. and tonight join nbc news for special coverage of president trump's joint address to congress. coverage begins at 6:00. and a heads up for our viewers. there is a newscast change tonight following president trump's joint address. there's an episode of deal or no deal island, followed by a special 9 p.m. newscast. and at 10:00, dateline set to air, followed by our regularly scheduled 11 p.m. newscast. some state workers, including leaders of some of the largest state worker unions, are expressing frustration with governor gavin newsom's new executive order. this is to bring everyone back to the office at least four days a week. the governor yesterday
6:36 am
ordered workers to be back by july 1st. now, this affects close to 100,000 state workers currently required to be in the office just two days per week, and it will still allow for case by case exemptions. well, in just a few hours, voters in san mateo county will make a major decision regarding the fate of their embattled sheriff. today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from outside the sheriff headquarters in downtown redwood city. so talk a little bit about what measure a is really asking for. good morning laura. measure a is the only issue before voters today on the special election that's taking place today here in san mateo county on the peninsula, and it asks voters to give the san mateo county board of supervisors the power to remove the sheriff for cause with 4/5 vote. now, the board is pursuing this measure in response to an independent audit it commissioned in november of last year. this 400 plus page audit report. it was released and it accused san mateo county sheriff cristina
6:37 am
corpus of a conflict of interest, abuse of power, intimidation and retaliation against employees, and the use of racist and homophobic language. her own captains, the deputies union, several cities here on the peninsula, and local political leaders. they have asked her to step down in response to that report. but sheriff corpus has refused. she says she is the victim of false lies and accusations from those who want to keep the sheriff's office, quote, white man's world. those are her words. and she has since filed a $10 million claim against san mateo county. now, last december, voters approved today's special election. sheriff corpus challenged measure a in court, but a judge in february upheld today's special election, which is obviously going forth. a political science professor at ucsc explained to us the implications of measure a by allowing the board of supervisors to do this. they also get to appoint an interim replacement. and so that seems semi undemocratic in the sense that the person who was elected
6:38 am
could be overthrown by this board and then someone who was not elected could replace them. the county has until the end of next month to certify today's election. if voters approve measure a, the board would then meet would have to publicly explain their reasons for wanting to remove the sheriff and then would vote again. would need 4/5 vote to lead to her ouster. reporting live here outside the san mateo county sheriff's office here in downtown redwood city.ob redell today in the bay. all right. we will see what today holds. thanks so much, bob. look at this. a beautiful sunrise for you this morning. here. this is over in dublin. meteorologist kari hall is monitoring what we can expect. look, the mornings like this sunrise. anyway, i'm here for 100%. it looks great out there. and the sun just under the deck of clouds that's been rolling into the bay area with this morning. starting out with a lot of clouds. even for the south bay, we are looking at the possibility of rain at times
6:39 am
today. most of it has already passed and we will be partly cloudy with more rain chances ahead. starting out tomorrow morning and continuing into thursday morning, we'll also have a little bit more sierra snow, which is as of right now, running a little bit below what's average, and there will be some more snow to come for the middle of the month. looking at san rafael as you're heading out the door, we did have a little bit of some wet weather. it was just enough to turn on the windshield wipers, and then we're just saying cloudy temperatures in the upper 40s now headed for the mid 50s. it's going to be cool like yesterday with a high of about 57 in novato, 59 in dublin and 60 in san jose. going into the day tomorrow, it will also be very much temperature wise like today, but i do think we'll see a little bit more rain. so we'll talk about that timeline coming up. and mike, you're expecting more traffic on tuesday. pretty typical for tuesday to see more traffic than a monday or even than a thursday or friday. we are looking at westbound traffic flowing and it is the volume is building for the san mateo bridge. and that's the reason why we see those sensors slow
6:40 am
just past the toll plaza all the way to the high rise. there's a crash 880 southbound approaching eighth street, but i believe everything is off to the shoulder. we see a build, of course, out of hayward, down through fremont and down through union city, continuing in toward fremont. traditional for the nimitz. another disabled vehicle right there, south 680 at andre. everything is reported out of lanes, but it's just off to the shoulder. so watch for that. slowing south out of pleasanton and in toward fremont and sunol. a smooth flow of traffic south of there shows the build starting once again for north 101. we should see 87 to see some slowing through san jose as well in the next few minutes, and then getting over toward the bay bridge. a nice easy flow of traffic, although we do have the slowdown building, of course, toward the toll plaza out of the maze. we have chase center with an activity tonight concert tonight at 7 p.m. the deftones play do note that there will be traffic again to and from that 280 stretch off mariposa. and then of course, overnight the golden gate bridge will have lane restrictions just like it did last night. clearing by about five this morning we saw things clear up about 515, 520.

four hours. investigators still trying to determine how this happened. well, new at six. the superintendent of dublin schools says that three students will be expelled following a large on campus brawl last month. this all according to the east bay times, which says that five more students were suspended as well. now the fight led to a lockdown at dublin high school. at least two students were treated at a hospital and one student was briefly knocked unconscious. the school board must still approve those recommended expulsions. postpartum depression affects so many new mothers, but the stigma, lack of infmation and in many cases, shame or guilt makes many mothers just not want to talk about it, according to new research. it's a struggle which keeps affecting more and more women. miriam villarreal, from our sister station telemundo 48, explores the impact for latinas. it's a silent battle that many women go through. data shows that postpartum depression cases are

on the rise, especially in the latin community. this is a report done in collabotion with usc annenberg center for health journalism. her daughter, sweet voice, draws an instant smile on stephanie's face, a joy that came after a process of mixed emotions after becoming a mother, and she compares her feelings that went from light to darkness, like something out of a movie. like it's one of those movies that everything feels like it's great, like sadness. sadnes matched with anxiety, matched with nervousness. feelings that she didn't recognize and thought were the so-called baby blues, which affects 75% of new mothers and begin as soon as the first day after giving birth. something that could be anticipated but not extended. you can have those feelings of being overwhelmed, sadness, lack of joy. but if that lasts for more than two weeks, i would call it the baby blues. you really want to understand that you might be facing postpartum depression? doctor bianco explains that cases of postpartum depression in latinas are on the rise. research reflects an increase of

more than double between 2010 and 2021. in fact, another study shows that 40% of latinas experience a mental health disorder after birth, such as depression, compared to white mothers, attributed in part to the socioeconomic and immigration status. which is why doctor bianco says it's important to not miss your postpartum appointments. the first intake, the first visit with your obstetrician, and the six weeks postpartum. however, when stephanie went to hers, she says she didn't relate to any of the listed symptoms. time went by feeling unwell and not knowing who to tell. the mental health stigma in the latino community makes many of them stay silent, and an extra factor. transculturation. maybe, perhaps coming from another country, maybe not having the same amount of people supporting you. according to experts, the language barrier migrating to another country and not having a support circle are other factors that may contribute to latinas

developing postpartum depression. and the next part of this report, we will navigate through help we found in our region. back to you. thanks so much. well, trending this morning, one of san francisco's most popular late night diners apparently ready to change hands. orphan andy's in the castro is up for sale. the 24 hour diner first opened back in 1977. the listing price $250,000. according to various reports, the current owners are really hoping to retire. one of them tells the standard that there's already at least one interested potential buyer. he's also hoping that whomever buys this place keeps it pretty much as it is. at least that menu anyway. there you go. get your banana pancakes. ding! order up some good food there too, if you can get into a small spot, but good food. time for breakfast. yeah, and we're thinking about, you know, whether it's hot or cool coffeer iced coffee. i think this morning, hot coffee. and it's been pretty chilly, too, even for the afternoons.
6:49 am
and we've seen a little bit of some spotty showers. and it hasn't really been that widespread. really not much of a change to your plans as you're heading out this morning. it's been very light as we've seen it moving through the north bay within the past couple of hours and quickly moving on. we're just going to be left with some clouds today as this storm system moves through and it continues to weaken. so as we take a look at our cameras right now across the bay area, we're still seeing some sun in san jose. it is 46 degrees and 50 degrees in walnut creek. a little bit of a cool morning and only headed for the upper 50s and low 60s for today. so our temperature is very much like yesterday with not as much sunshine. and tomorrow we should see more clouds and even a chance of rain as our temperatures hold steady going back into the upper 50/50. but then look at thursday. there's still no warm up here. it's not until friday when we start to feel a little bit more comfortable. so let's talk about that rain in the forecast. it looks pretty widespread as we start out tomorrow morning at
6:50 am
6:00. we're going to see some pockets of heavy rain as well. once that moves out, there will be a break for a few hours. and then another round of rain comes in early thursday morning. that may even leave a coating of snow on some of the bay area mountains like mount hamilton. and then all of this wraps up on thursday afternoon. so we're looking at some of the highest rainfall totals and the more measurable rain, actually, in the south bay, about a quarter to half inch will be possible over the next few days as we check in on the reservoirs. they are doing pretty well, although we could use a little bit more water for the lexington as well as the reservoirs. we are looking pretty good there as well as across the state on average for our four largest reservoirs, running at about 82% of capacity. looking at the rest of the forecast, off and on rain for tomorrow as well as thursday, all sunny on friday into the weekend looks like a beautiful weekend to get outside. will be a little chilly to start, but making it into the mid to upper 60s and we do have
6:51 am
more rain in the forecast next week, possibly some heavier rainfall going into next week, so we'll be watching that. mike, how's the commute shaping up right now? you look pretty good. a little odd configuration over here at the bay bridge toll plaza. notice these lanes. if you're coming toward the toll plaza, these lanes are off to the left. a smooth flow of traffic and a lighter volume. folks seem to be shifting lanes, so there may be something going on at the toll plaza. although chp has no reports of anything going on in, the hov lanes are just fine. watch lanes three and four. there. we're watching walnut creek for the build out of pleasant hill and concord. highway four, 242 and 680 now show a build that will mean more folks heading toward the caldecott 24 moves smoothly, though no major issues down the eastshore freeway or at the richmond bridge towards san rafael west 580, as well as through the area. as we look toward the rest of the bay, we see more congestion. the crash at eighth street was reported on the shoulder, but there may be a tow truck that's just arrived. that typically is when we see the slowing happen, and then it will clear in the next few

minutes. the build, though for the nimitz, as well as 680, pretty standard as far as those areas heading south from the 580 latitude here across 92 bills no drama toward the peninsula and vasco road holds under a half hour. just under a half hour. but that's good to hold there. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, happening now. some encouraging news overnight for pope francis as he battles pneumonia in a rome hospital. the vatican says noninvasive ventilation device has now been removed, but the pontiff is still receiving oxygen. yesterday he suffered two new respiratory episodes. church leaders say his overall condition is still very complex. cardinal angelo de donatis will preside over tomorrow's ash wednesday services. and we're back with a look at our top stories this morning, including new sweeping tariffs. president trump slaps a huge tax on goods from canada and mexico, along with a new hike for goods from china. the swift retaliation american's biggest trading partners are already seeing. plus, a warning for commuters in

in just minutes right after us here on today in the bay. today, voters in san mateo county will decide the fate of measure a. if approved, it will give the board of supervisors the power to remove embattled sheriff christina corpus. sheriff corpus for months has been under fire following an independent audit. it found evidence of an abuse of power, a. culture of retaliation and intimidation in her office. the sheriff repeatedly has denied those allegations, saying the attacks on her are politically motivated. if measure a passes, corpus says she'll take the matter to court. vta leaders are advising everyone to make alternative plans for that commute. this as uth bay transit workers may not show up to work today. their contract ended overnight with no agreement with vta, although the two sides have been meeting twice weekly. they couldn't bridge a big pay gap. now, according to the mercury news, among the asks, well, the union wants 24% in pay increases over

three years. vta's most recent offer was 9% of the three years. now, recently, transit worker members union voted to authorize a strike, but there's no word on when that might happen. let's get a check of the forecast for this tuesday with meteorologist kari hall. starting out cloudy and mild across the bay area. we will have a slight chance of rain today, but a better chance of rain tomorrow. starting out early in the morning and then again on thursday morning. looking ahead to the weekend, it looks really nice with sunshine and warmer weather and after we get that much needed rain, i think we'll see things in bloom again this weekend. and we're looking toward the south bay. even though the build is on for silicon valley. i have to take you farther into the south county here because highway 152, there's a crash at 156, and that could impede your drive if you're traveling between 101 and i-5. no major injuries reported, but a big rig did drop a bunch of bins across the whole freeway. that can be such a dangerous stretch. tough stretch there. all right, well, today show just moments away. however, for more local news today in the
