accomplish specifically with the economics on this. >> they describe this as a drug war, not a trade war. because they've been tieing negotiations over these tariffs with china, mexico, and canada to progress on the fentanyl crisis saying those three countries allegedly are the ones allowing fentanyl to get into this country and if they can resolve that and see the number of deaths go down in the u.s., the tariffs could go away. they don't see this right now because they put in place these tariffs on mexico, canada. these are likely going to lead to price increases for average americans even though we've heard scott bessant say we think china's going to pay for it but a lot of producers and companies we've been speaking to have said we're the ones that are going to have to foot the bill because we pay that and we'll have to pass it on to customers. >> that's the thg.

does china sosh it or pass it along. what are we talking about? what do economists think will go up in price? >> they've been projecting inflation will increase after this, but what's more impactful is that you have business owne, large businesses down the street from you likely that are opining on this as well. like brian cornell, the ceo of target. he was talking about the tariffs this morning. take a listen. >> we know for certain categories like fruits and vegetables where during this winter season, we depend on mexico for a significant amount of supply. those are categories where we'll try to protect pricing but the consumer will likely see price increases over the next couple of days. >> that's the target ceo telling their customers that we will likely have to raise prices. not just on things like electronics. he mentioned grocery prices. we import a lot of fruits and vegetables from mexico and grains and potatoes from canada.

these are very much real life impacting that we'll see from these tariffs. >> thanks so much. >> tariffs are sure to be a major topic in present trump's address tonight. >> it has been a fast-moving first 43 days in office. that's to say the least for president trump. and there are three topics we're closely watching for in his remarks. first, he ran on bringing prices down, but consumers aren't really feeling relief, least not yet. what will he say about the progress on that front. >> also, what will he have to say about the sweeping cuts to the federal government made by elon musk. and then there's foreign policy. certainly that's been top of mind since last week's explosive oval office clash between president trump and president zelenskyy. >> gabe gutierrez joins us now. what is the white house telling us about what we should expect to be the? >> reporter: well, fast-moving 43 days, indeed.

senior official tells us tonight's speech theme will be quote, renewal of the american dream. president trump will use it as an opportunity to highlight what he sees as the successes of his administration during these first 43 days. now, we expect to hear, as you mentioned, as your previous story suggests, tariffs. he will certainly bring that up, but we also expect to hear about what the administration views his success so far in slashing the federal government, which it believes it has a mandate after the election and we expect the president to point out the department of government efficiency, doge, and we're told that elon musk himself will be in attendance tonight as the president addresses a joint session of congress. also, another topic that we expect to hear from the president is illegal immigration. in fact, according to one senior administration official, that will make up about one eighth of his speech. we're told the president is expected to highlight that

illegal border crossings are down dramatically since he took office and he's also expected to push congress for more funding for his mass deportation plan. >> and gabe, let's talk ukraine because that's sure to come up tonight. the white house has paused all military aid going to the country as of last night. so what are we hearing from president zelenskyy today? >> well, we did hear from president zelenskyy overnight. he posted on social media essentially looking to come back to the negotiating table here. saying it was regrettable the meeting in washington on friday that it did not got the way it was supposed to be and president zelenskyy also saying that he was grateful for u.s. support. and what the trump administration has given him. still, he has not yet publicly apologized. earlier today, vice president vance said on capitol hill that isn't so much the public apology, but the behind the

possible. this all comes as new orleans celebrates mardi gras today while the official closely monitor the storm that's closing in. bill karins is tracking that storm system. bill, what should folks around it had south be bracing for tonight? >> i know all eyes are on new orleans. so many people are there for the festivities. we had the line of storms that will move in about two to three hours from now. this morning, it was over dallas and we had a lot of problems with high winds. so far today, about 133 severe weather reports. only one tornado. no reports of fatalities. one active tornado warning in mississippi. until 7:00 p.m. this line of storms hasn't produced a lot of tornados but doesn't mean we couldn't get an isolated one on two. the line of storms is on i-10. so everything in new orleans is safe for another couple of hours. here's the area of concern for tonight. about 15 million people

included. we'll watch those storms go into mississippi next couple of hours then after sunset, into alabama. these hash lines, the atmosphere is favorable for another spinning for a strong tornado or twtwo. again, so far so good, but evening new orleans is in that risk. then this thing arrives on the east coast with a lot of wind problems as we go throughout the afternoon and morning tomorrow. that will cause a lot of airport problems across the coast. then as far as the cold side of this storm, and this may end up being worse than the severe side. we have blizzard warnings from des moines, omaha, and kansas city. expecting 50 to 70 mile per hour winds. these are areas that today have been near 60 degrees. then tonight, the temperature crashes. we're going to have people losing power because of the wind. it's not like they're going to get a ton of snow, but it's going to be blowing and drifting all over the place. this is quite a storm typical

texas health officials have just announced another confirmed measles case as the outbreak there continues to spread and it's spreading across the country now. the state says there are 159 confirmed cases across nine counties in texas. that includes one child who died from the virus last week. as cases continue to spad, some doctors have growing concerns about the federal government's response to the state's growing outbreak. nbc news medical reporter erica edwards joins us now. what do we know about this latest case and how are health

officials trying to protect the public? >> so, officials on the ground in texas really aren't disclosing a lot of personal details about this new case, but what i can tell you is that nearly all cases so far have been in unvaccinated children. usually between the ages of 5 and 17, however,r, yesterday, t head of the texas department of health said that they are starting to see an increase in cases reported among its tinier kids between the ages of 0 and 4. and we know people are still getting sick enough to be hospitalized. 22 people have had to be admitted to the hospital. right now what people are doing on the ground is trying to get as many people tested as possible and trying to get as many people vaccinated as possible. even people who are unvaccinated can get the shot's protection if they've had an exposure to measles as long as it happened within about a 72-hour window. kate? >> i also want to ask about your

new reporting. you report that some doctors are weary of robert f. kennedy jr., the nation's top health official, and his response to this outbreak.. he also, secretary kennedy, also spoke out about the outbreak today. so talk to us about the skepticism he's facing and what he's saying. >> yeaeah, so deite what the secretary said during his confirmation hearings last month, he is not coming out to encourage or urge people to get mmr shots to try to combat this outbreak, which by the way, is predecessor did in 2019 in response to a smaller measles outbreak during the first trump administration. but what the secretary is touting right now is vitamin a. that's usually reserved for people with very low nutritn. not usually given to folks here in the u.s. doctors are concerned that the messages could, you know, prompt people to go out and up their

daily. i'm janelle wang lanes of southbound 880 are back open in oakland. we broke into programing earlier this morning to bring you this breaking news. the chp shut down lanes around 1030 as officers walked the freeway to investigate a possible freeway shooting. we're still checking with chp. so far, no word of any victims or suspects. the el cerrito plaza bart station is back open after a person on the tracks was hit by a train. the transit agency first issued an alert around 840 this morning. this is also video from nbc bay area sky ranger limited train service has been restored between richmond and north berkeley. no word on that person's condition. right now, voters in san mateo county are making a major decision regarding the fate of their embattled sheriff. nbc bay area's barbara dell shows us what measure a is asking for.

measure a is the only issue on the ballot before voters in today's special election. it asks voters to give the san mateo county board of supervisors the power to remove a sheriff with cause for cause, assuming they have a 4/5 vote. now, the board is pursuing this measure in response to an independent report it commissioned in november of last year, the 400 plus page report was released and it accuses san mateo county sheriff christina corpus of a conflict of interest, abuse of power, intimidation and retaliation against employees, and the use of racist and homophobic language. her own captains, the deputies union, several cities here on the peninsula, and local political leaders. they have asked her to step down, but sheriff corpus has refused. she says she is the victim of false lies and accusations from those who want to keep the sheriff's office, quotea white man's world. and she has since filed a $10 million claim against san mateo county. last december, voters approved a special

election. sheriff corpus challenged measure a in court, but a judge last month upheld today's special election, which is obviously going forward. a political science professor at ucsc explained to us the implications of measure a by allowing the board of supervisors to do this. they also get to appoint an interim replacement. and so that seems semi undemocratic in the sense that the person who was elected could be overthrown by this board and then someone who was not elected could replace them. the county has until the end of next month to certify today's election. if voters approve measure a, the board would then meet would have to publicly explain their reasons for wanting to remove the sheriff and would then vote again. they would need 4/5 of vote for that measure to go through. here in redwood city. bob redell nbc bay area news. thank you bob. cool, cloudy and some rain. it's back to winter weather for us in the bay area. here's meteorologist kari hall with our forecast. the clouds continue today with a chance of rain as we go into the

in jefferson park that's near japantown. that's where police rested nearly 100 people. neighbors last week told us they believe many of those arrested relocated there after the city cleared out areas in the tenderloin and south of market neighborhoods. the superintendent of dublin schools says three students will be expelled following a large on campus brawl last month. the fight led to a lockdown at dublin high school. at least two students were treated at a hospital, and one student was briefly knocked knocked unconscious. the school board must still approve those recommended expulsions. oakland leaders are grappling with major budget cuts, and they received major backlash after proposed fire station closures. but late last week, the city announced a plan to keep four fire stations open. council members are expected to authorize that plan later today. you can get all your day's news on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and i'll be back in 30 minutes with more

for the parents. in 2023, their eggs were eaten by ravens and last year, none of their three eggs hatched. there is still one more unhatched egg in that nest, so there may be more good news to come. the test flight for the starship has been scheduled to tomorrow. it was originally scheduled for yesterday but was postponed by a technical issue. you might remember the last launch in january ended with part of the rocket breaking up in mid flight. at more than 400 feet tall, starship is the biggest rocket system ever built. and dolly parton announced on instagram that her husband had passed away. they were married for nearly six decades. they kept their relationship and personal life out of the public eye. parton's instagram post said in part words could not do justice for the love they shared for 60 years. dean was 82 years old. we are getting new information about the health of

pope francis. just a short time ago, the vatican said the pope has not experienced any new episodes of respiratory insufficiency adding he remains stable and without a fever. it comes after he suffered two acute respiratory failures yesterday. he was admitted to the hospital on february 14th and diagnosed with pneumonia. our international correspondent has been at the vatican for days and joins us again. what more cayou tell us about the pope's condition? >> reporter: hey, kate. definitely a more reassuring update today than yesterday. he did not have any more of these respiratory failures. also, the vatican said throughout the day, the pope did not have any fever. he's been alert at all times. he's been cooperating with the doctors. he spent the day resting, alternating rest with prayers.

also, he continues the oxygen therapy to help him breathe, but the doctors insist that of course his condition or prognosis remains guarded, meaning he's not out of danger yet. you can hear that behind me. that is is evening rosary taking place in st. peter's square. hundreds of people. they've been doing this for ten days now and they're praying for the pope's recovery so they come back here to the vatican soon. >> we hear that behind you. tomorrow is ash wednesday. the start of lent. do we know if the pope will be working in any capacity? >> reporter: well, we did ask that. a vatican official said they would let us know tomorrow. it depends on how he feels. in the past few days, he has been doing some work, signing documents and stuff like that. whatever he can do from the hospital. also, receiving visits. but in the past two or three days, he just alternated rest

problem? >> i think ear buds are a big part of the problem. traditionally, we would think of noise in the workplace or firearm usage, but air buds direct the sound right into the ear and people are listening at loud levels. even though there's safety coconsciousns among the companies, they can still get really, really loud. >> i assume you're talking about some of the audio caps a lot of phones now have. can you talk to us about what a safe noise level is and how might we know if we're passing it? >> if you think it's safe, it's unsafe. you should just stop. yeah. a good rule of thumb is that if you are shouting at people and they're within an arm's length of you or three feet of you, it's too loud in this environment. whether it's your ear buds or the world around you. >> we we're at a concert, what can we do to protect our hearing? i know at a concert, people often put in ear plugs.

thing we listen to producers and i've got hearing loss in my left ear. used to hear a lot of loud, loud sounds. the point is, what are ways to manage? there are ways to manage hearing loss. you mentioned getting some kind of device. >> hearing aids. hearing aids are now over the counter so there's been an explosion in readily accessible technology that both amplifies sound and makes it more comfortable and audible. so focusing on the person you want to hear in front of you and dampen other sounds. even air pods are registering as hearing aids. >> how does that work? >> it has to be with specific software and then you actually connect them to your phone and turn them into hearing aids. they have most of the same basic mechanisms of standard hearing aids. >> but you're walking around with air pods. >> yeah.

daily south bay commuters. be prepared to find a new way to get around. vta's contract with its light rail and bus operators expired at midnight. the union's 1500 light rail and bus operators and other workers already voted in fav of a strike, and the union got the green light from the south bay labor council. but at this time, they are still working, hoping to hammer out a deal with the transit agency. he is taking a knee, so i have to take an uber or lyft, or i have to take the caltrain, which takes more time for me, so it's very convenient. the vta made its last and final offer on thursday. that offer was 9% in pay increases over the next three years. the union is asking for 18% over the next three years and according to the union, other sticking points are increases in dental coverage, a

change to a holiday policy, termination of disabled or injured workers after one year, and arbitration. this is a very competitive offer. it continues to keep our front line workers as the second highest paid of transportation agencies in the bay area. themaving unilateral authority on deciding if a, you know, a grievance holds merit or not. i mean, we can't have that, right? that's the resolution process is, is the base of the entire agreement. and if we don't have that, then the entire agreement is meaningless. and again, transit union workers are on the job. they are running the trains and busses. if they do decide to strike, we will let you know and watch today in the bay. tomorrow morning, starting at 5 a.m, mike inouye will be tracking everything related to the traffic and your commute. don't put those umbrellas away. there's more rain coming this week. here's meteorologist kari hall with our extended forecast. today will be mostly cloudy,
