turn to hallie jackson and kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press." let's start 30,000 feet and the tone. this was a very bold, very confident president trump. >> absolutely. he was defiant. this felt like a campaign speech. he reiterated, revived some of his old grievances. took aim at democrats and his political rivals. i thought it was notable, he spent the first 20 minutes leaning into the culture wars. that's one of the reasons i think why he was able to energize his base so effectively during the campaign. he did, as peter said, make news on tariffs and on ukraine. i think the big question is though moving forward, what does this mean for the biggest issue for voters, the economy? more voters -- majority of voters want him to do more to bring down prices. in my interview with him several months ago, he said he is going to bring down prices.

prices have not yet come down. i think that's going to be in focus. i have to tell you that moment with al green, one democrat said, no one looked good last night. >> we will talk about that in a moment. i want to talk about some of the policy. the economy is interesting. this tariff gamble, it is a huge gamble. the trade war will work when most economists say the prices are going to go up. he acknowledged. there will be pain but it won't be much. >> if you were looking -- if you are looking at the potential for prices to go up because of tariffs and looking for some thought of compromise from president trump last night, you sure did not get it. he was insisting that he is not going to back away from the tariff pledge, which he said he would do on the campaign trail. he is following through. it's not just experts who suggest prices will go up. it's corporations saying, we cannot absorb the costs. his own commerce secretary hours before this speech suggested that maybe there would be some

kind of a deal. >> a disconnect.t. president trump is full speed ahead. >> this is potentially long-term. he suggested car companies like it. they do not like it because of what it could mean for consumers that will have to pay more for their new cars. >> let's talk about the democrats. they are in the wilderness. when you talk about a confident president trump, democrats seem all over the place in terms of -- it was emblematic. some sat quietly on their hands. didn't clap. others holding signs. one member ejected. this is -- hakeem jeffries told democrats, don't. listen and get through it. >> absolutely. the optics, all of the optics, which you just pointed out, are to some point emblematic as the democratic party. senator elissa slotkin tried to talk about it.

imports. the tariffs could drive up prices on products in nearly every sector with the higher costs likely, some of them, passed down to american consumers. less than 24 hours after taking affect, the trump administration started signaling maybe we could see some of it scaled back. from a tailspin on wall street to nervous consumers on main street. >> eggs are going to double. is gas going through the roof? >> reporter: concern about the trade war against mexico, canada and china. >> whatever they tariff us, other countries, we will tariff them. it's reciprocal, back and forth. >> reporter: hours after they took affect, the administration signaling there may be a compromise with mexico and canada. arguing the u.s. allies need to show they are fighting illegal immigration and the drug trade. >> he is looking carefully at that.

trying to figure out, is there a way in there that he can come in the middle? >> reporter: ahead of any deal, china, mexico and canada vowing to retaliate. >> canadians are reasonable. we are polite. we will not back down from a fight. >> reporter: the premiere of canada's ontario province warning american consumers will suffer and that he may even shut off power in neighboring states where canada supplies it. >> i will use every single tool in our tool kit to fight back. >> reporter: some experts predict tariffs could mean higher prices at the pump for millions of americans in the immediate future. >> the next week or so, gas prices will start going up. by mid march gas prices could be 20 cents to 30 cents higher a gallon. >> reporter: spending recently falling for first time in nearly two years. some major retailers say higher prices may be passed on to

customers. target's ceo warning prices on fruits and vegetables from mexico could rise in the next few days. >> we will try to make sure we protect pricing. if there's a 25% tariff, those prices will go up. >> gas prices maybe next week. produce, maybe the next few days. the price hikes seem like they are in motion. >> i was talking to auto parts makers. they are concerned about how long they can absorb the higher prices before they start passing them into their supply chains. we heard from best buy saying its vendors will pass on higher prices for smartphones, electronics. we will watch this closely. it comes when the american consumer is exhausted by inflation, obviously, and starting to see signs of souring in terms of their mood. we will watch closely. >> kristine romans, thank you. another big story this morning. severe weather. a massive storm system tearing

across the country today. we have seen blizzard-like conditions in the midwest. tornadoes and heavy rain in the south. it's not over yet. al has his forecast on tap. first, let's get to maggie vespa in a snowy rochester, minnesota. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. from a newly snowy rochester, minnesota, all of this snow new overnight. it started falling in the last few hours, falling at rates up to one inch per hour. it's been heavy and fast. on top of that, we have wind gusts topping out. they have been sporadic, but around 50 miles per hour. that's blowing the snow all over the roads. this is one layer in this monster system sweeping across the country that may have turned deadly. a late winter whiteout with monster blizzards baring down on billions across the midwest, causing treacherous travel on the roads, just in time for the morning commute. this massive storm system wreaking havoc across much of the country. in mississippi, local media reports two people were killed

and a third hospitalized by falling trees and downed power lines. authorities have yet to confirm whether the incidents were weather related. blinding dust storms sweeping across texas with at least seven tornadoes confirmed in oklahoma. >> i was scared. i said, god don't let us get killed. >> reporter: this high school's roof torn to shreds. the small planes tossed like toys. more than 300,000 people across texas lost power. in new orleans, mardi gras celebrations cut short. even so, party goers in the big easy making the most of it. >> if the parade is not going on, still out here having fun. >> this is our super bowl. >> reporter: minnesota's department of transportation deploying more than 100 plows to try and keep mother nature's late winter wrath in check. the roads are going to be a mess. >> yes. you have to determine what's your driving capability, what's

on the home. the fire chief telling me it's ruled out any lethal gas leak. it shared details about the state of hackman's body when authorities arrived. one week since the bodies of gene hackman and his wife and one of their dogs were found deceased in their home, their cause of death still a mystery. new this morning, the gas company says they have conducted what they call an extensive investigation of the home saying there were no significant findings, only one non-lethal leak on a stove burner, which the fire chief says nearly all but rules out a gas leak. >> they checked the roof. t they checked every vent. they checked every part that had to do with gas. there was no major finding. >> reporter: new details are emerging about the condition of gene hackman's body. >> there was blackening on the hands. he was there for at least a week and a half.

it was about the same. >> reporter: would that suggest they died within a similar time frame? >> i think we wait for the autopsy on that. >> reporter: the best clue into when the 95-year-old actor died continues to be his pacemaker, which the scherff says last showed activity on february 17th, nearly ten days before they were discovered. the fire chief says they were found 30 minutes apart, due to protocol due to the massive size of the home. >> i was told, there's three homes on the property or three separate structures on the property. they had to search each one. >> reporter: hackman was found in a mud room and his wife in a bathroom where an open prescription pill bottle was on the counter along with scattered pills. it's a key part of the investigation. his nephew speaking out, telling us weekly the family doesn't want to speculate on negative theories and is trying to keep it positive. >> so many outstanding questions at this point.

i love tsunami. mike white is just hilarious. when i was working on chris guess movies, chris and i would joke, i would go, no. piper, no. we just played on that. it just started to grow and grow. of course, i love southern women to be able -- i thought as a little girl, loving tennessee williams and the southern drama. these women, i love southern women characters. >> yes, yes. >> we watch "southern charm". >> the reality show? >> yeah. being able to be this dramatic and funny is juicy and fun to do. mike white wrote it, so -- >> you can tell it comes from an authentic place. >> thank you. >> you said this role, you have done a lot, but you said this role -- >> 30 years. >> you said it was life changing

for you. how so? >> basically, i lived in thailand almost seven months. have you been to asia? >> i have. >> there's a greeting in thailand. it means good morning, hello, how are you. many blessings. they greet you in this way. it's almost like namaste. it's reverent and beautiful. i love the culture. i feel like i live there. we were there for the premiere in bangkok. i got to re-visit the star at the four seasons and see the butlers and the whole -- it was a very special place. if i'm going to work somewhere, i want to feel connected to where i am. i just lived there.

in the body. muscle and bone communicate with each other. we put a lot of attention on osteoporosis for women and men. muscle around those bones is critical. they also supply the amino acid reservoir for essential organ systems in the body, skin, heart and brain. when you talk about muscle, you talk about something that is vitally important and linked to mortality as well as longevity. clinically, in a clinical setting, we test that. i'm going to give this to you. no pressure. just on national television, grip strength. give it your best. there are actually -- >> what is it -- it doesn't look good. >> no, no, no. it depends age, women, men, right hand versus left hand. >> what does grip strength show, other than i'm weak? >> it's correlated with risk of death.

that is how important strength is. >> you can get better? >> 100%. squeeze those kitchen sponges. make sure they are not too wet. >> it feels like the conversation around this is changing. more people are interested in strength training generally. >> there's a lot of focus on women. we talk about menopause, muscle has estrogen and testosterone rece receptors. this is not just an issue for our moms and grandmothers. you start to lose muscle mass, are you ready, as early as age 30. it goes down about 3% every decade. what we are trying to avoid a condition called sarcopenia. it's a loss of functionality that goes along with muscle. directly correlated with our risk of dying from all causes. >> what are the key things we can do for folks at home who want to get better?

>> specifically, obviously, men or women, but specifically when you are talking about women, there's a lot we can do to build our muscle. we have to get this mindset that it's just for the -- >> you are not going to bulk up. >> no. not mr. universe here. you need to take in enough protein in your diet. we have talked about that before. there's a huge focus. it needs to be 20 grams for each snack, 30 grams for each meal. read the nutritional labels. look at your menu. things like low acid diet, some data that correlates that with improved muscle mass. high fruits and vehiclegetables. lifting heavyweights. things that are hard to lift, three times a week. >> dr. ashton, so many good tips. >> get lifting. >> thanks for bringing the props. >> you did very well. >> i will work on my grip strength. you can get our start today app for $49.99, less than $5 a
