i'm frances rivera. for the first time ever, the u.s. is holding direct talks with hamas. the administration is trying to secure the release of american hostages held in gaza. president trump chimed in on the delicate negotiations threatening hamas and palestinians in gaza with death if all the hostages are not released immediately. for the latest, let's go to matt bodner. good morning, matt. president trump has threatened hamas like this before, hasn't he? >> reporter: good morning, frances. that is correct. he did just that three weeks ago when he threatened that all hell will break loose if hamas postponed a hostage release. nothing came of that. israel and hamas settled their disagreement at that impasse. this time he took to truth social to threaten the people of gaza with death if they don't make the, quote, smart decision and comply with his demands to release the remaining hostages.

this comes as the white house completes its first ever diplomacy with hamas. they designated hamas a terror group in 1997. five american hostages are still in hamas captivity, and the white house is focussed on securing their release specifically. president putin brokered his own deal with hamas for the release of russian hostages in 2023. tensions remain high and the future of the cease-fire remains unresolved. essentially, israel and the trump white house are pushing an entirely new cease-fire plan, and it differs from the plan that hamas initially signed up for. steve witkoff proposes that they release half of the remaining hostages now and the rest contingent on idf withdrawal from gaza. the original plan would have seen a staggered release of hostages leading to a permanent cease-fire and withdrawal. there are concerns that the efforts may break down entirely. and we may see a full-scale
