crosshairs. president trump reportedly ready to sign an executive order to dismantle the department of education. >> it comes amid more fallout over those tariffs against canada, mexico, and china. the american auto industry now catching a break for a moment. the white house granted a one-month exemption on some auto imports. let's start with peter alexander at the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. president trump has long wanted to get rid of the department of education. he promised as much throughout his first term, and again in this latest campaign. even recently telling his education secretary, linda mcmahon, he wants her to put herself out of a job. mcmahon just this week calling it, a quote, momentous final mission as she looks to send education back to the states. this morning, the president reportedly taking aim at a department that affects schools across the country. "the wall street journal" citing people briefed on the matter reports president trump is

expected to issue an executive order as early as today aimed at abolishing the department of education. >> what do these people do? what do they do? >> reporter: nbc now news has not independently confirmed the report. they cannot do that without the approval of congress, but they may look for ways to defund congress. president trump has said, his aim is cutting down inefficiency and waste. the impact on american school children could be far-reaching. the department of education says it serves more than 50 million students across the country. democrats in labor unions have argued dismantling the department would be devastating. >> our class size is going to balloon. we know that one on one intention that students need will not be there and it will affect our most vulnerable students, those living in poverty, those who have disabilities. >> reporter: meanwhile, the president's top lieutenant, elon musk, who heads the department of government efficiency, huddling privately with

congressional republicans. >> there's a lot of room, a lot of opportunity to improve expenditures in the government. >> reporter: several senators telling nbc news they discussed the possibility of a package to make doge's sweeping cuts permanent, an option that came as a surprise to musk who pumped his first and danced around the room, according to lindsey graham. >> he was, like, so happy. >> reporter: among the firings to come, veteran affairs secretary doug collins announcing his department is aiming to slash 15% of its work force, as many as 80,000 employees. >> we regret anyone who lost loses their job, but we'll be making major changes so get used to it. >> reporter: democrats are warning veterans will be the ones who suffer. >> this staffing cut is a betrayal to our service members. our promise. it is outrageous. >> so peter, all of this coming as the president appears to face a bit of a setback at the supreme court over foreign aid. what more can you tell us about that? reporter: yeah, craig.

this was a narrow 5-4 ruling. the supreme court rejecting the trump administration's request to freeze nearly $2 billion in spending for foreign aid to contractors who work for the group usaid. they provide food, aid, medicine to countries around the world. it's not clear when the administration will start spending that money, sending it out. conservative chief justice john roberts and amy coney barrett interestingly joined the liberal justices in this case, ruling against one of president trump's major efforts to cut federal spending, craig. >> chief white house correspondent peter alexander for us there. peter thank you. also fallout this morning from president trump's newly-launched tariffs against the country's largest trading partners, canada, mexicond china. consumers are starting to feel the impact now. some grocery prices are already rising again. but the administration is announcing a brief reprieve for one key sector, u.s. automakers. nbc senior business correspondent christine romans watching all of it.

good morning. >> good morning. that announce from the the white house provided temporary relief to the american auto companies. the keyword is temporary. the administration signaled could be over car tariffs. they remain largely in place with more tariffs expected in a matter of week. >> reporter: america's big-three automakers breathing a temporary sigh of relief this morning after the trump administration announced a pause on the 25% tariffs for vehicles and auto parts coming from mexico and canada. >> the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they're not an economic disadvantage. >> reporter: that move after the white house says it heard directly from ford, general motors and stellantis. and just hours after the president acknowledged in his address to lawmakers that americans could have to pay more, while also down aying the impact. >> there will be a little disturbance. but we're okay with that. >> reporter: according to one estimate, tariffs will cost the average advantage household 12 to $1,300 more a year for the

goods they're buying now. >> it's going to cost them more, building the average house is going to cost more. >> reporter: from hardware stores to the supermarket shelves, suppliers and shoppers are preparing for price increases in the coming days. >> we want to make sure we give our customers the best value and the best freshest products available. >> reporter: at grocery stores like stew leonard, that includes foods from canada and mexico, like fish and avocados. >> do you think you'll adjust sort of your menu with your kids and stuff based on some of the -- i guess, how prices come in? >> definitely making more at home than going out and things like that because i'm sure the restaurant prices will go up, too. >> reporter: while the grocery chain says it will try to absorb some of the cost increase, customers may also see higher prices. back in washington, fears of a trade war ramping up, as china, canada and mexico threaten to retaliate to the tariffs. the chinese embassy to the u.s.

quote, if war what the u.s. wants, we're ready to fight to the end. the trump administration responding yesterday that america will always be prepared to defend itself. >> so these tariffs are in effect. there are more tariffs coming in early april. do you expect over relief, little one-offs like this as we saw with the auto industry for one month? >> you know, i don't think the president want to do that. i really don't. i think we had jd vance, last night saying we don't want car from 500 industries. go ahead and make your products in the united states and you don't have to worry about it. so, there's some talk about maybe agriculture. there's a lot of parts of the u.s. economy that could be damaged by tariffs. but the president seems to be very adamant that he wants to put the screws to america's trading partser partners and tighten the crews. he wants production in the united states. >> it's interesting, the commerce secretary indicating, oh, maybe we'll meet the middle,

we're going to soften it. there's a disconnect there. >> there are compromisers and hardliners in this administration. it seems, at least when you watch the public air waves a battle between those two factions. >> okay. >> the buck stops with the president as he likes to say. >> he wants tariff. he is tariff man and wants tariffs. >> christine, thank you. breaking news from overseas. a village near the north korean border bombed accidentally during a training drill involving members of the south korean and u.s. military. nbc's janis mackey frayer joining us with the very latest on this breaking news. janice, what can you tell us? >> reporter: craig, it was a mistake that came dangerously close to being deadly from the south korean military overnight. as you see from this stunning video, showing the moment of impact of one of those bombs. it happened during training for joint exercises with the u.s. military involving live fire drills, eight bombs were accidentally dropped from south korean fighter jets on a

civilian village about 20 miles from the north korean border. they were supposed to hit a training range, but left 15 people with injuries, two of them are in serious condition. now, south korean officials said that one of the pilots put in the wrong coordinates, but what isn't clear is why a second pilot then dropped bombs as well. south korea's military says its suspending all live fire drills while an investigation is carried out, but they also assured that the joint exercises with the u.s., known as freedom shield, would kick off next week as planned. the u.s. aircraft carrier, uss carl vincent arrived on the korean peninsula as part of the annual show of force that often triggers threats from north korea, which has warned of military actions of its own. there's been no immediate comment yet from the u.s. military on the accident beyond saying that u.s. aircraft were not involved. craig? >> all right. janis mackey frayer for us on that breaking news. thank you. more breaking news

overnight, hamas responding to a new ultimatum from president trump demanding the immediate release of all hostages held in gaza or face, quote, hell to pay. we're also learning more about the first-ever direct talks between u.s. officials and the terror group. nbc's matt bradley joins us from tel aviv with that story. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. we're here in tel aviv's hostage square where people are very much in mourning. waiting for the return of dozens of hostages who are still being held in the gaza strip. today, a diplomatic bomb shell for the middle east. the white house confirming that for the first time ever the u.s. is speaking directly to hamas, negotiating for the release of american hostages in gaza. the move so unusual because hamas is a designated terrorist group. >> israel was consulted on this matter. and look, dialogue and talking to people around the world to do what's in the best interest of the american people is something

that the president has proven is what he believes is good faith effort. >> reporter: the president himself writing to hamas on social media yesterday, release all of the hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered or it's over for you. president trump told hamas leaders to leave gaza while you still have a chance. in their resesponse, has said the president's position gives the war criminal netanyahu, israel's prime minister, the strength and ability to continue his crimes. trump's fresh threats against hamas after the president met with eight hostages who were released from gaza in the oval office. >> we believe we were sent by god to release them. >> reporter: the 59 hostages still believed to be held in the gaza strip, five are americans but only one, aidan alexander, is believed to still be alive. their fate hangs on a shaky truce the u.s. negotiated in late january. the first phase of the ceasefire expired on saturday. talks to extend the first phase or negotiate in a more permanent

treaty have so far come to nothing. to pressure hamas, israel cut off aid to gaza on sunday causing food prices to surge. >> the situation is getting much more dire. we require an immediate stop to this madness before tragedy. >> reporter: and you know, savannah, that white house spokeswoman was asked whether the direct talks with hamas included any discussion of donald trump's controversial plan to own the gaza strip and turn it into a, quote, riviera. she declined to comment. savannah? >> matt, thank you very much. lots more to get to here on a thursday morning, including severe weather. the dangerous cross country storm we have been tracking all week, now tearing through the northeast overnight. al is standing by with our full forecast. but first, nbc's erin mclaughlin is in queens for us. erin? >> reporter: good morning, guys. overnight gusty winds and heavy rains took a toll on the tri-state area, as you can see. this tree is completely snapped in half. the good news this morning, the storm is gone.

but the clean up is just beginning. overnight, severe storms hitting the east coast. dumping pea-sized hail on pennsylvania. and intense rains in new york city. where water poured into subway stations underground. some areas in the mid atlantic getting hurricane-strength wind gusts. >> trees down every where. power lines down. >> reporter: with some areas hit with shattering winds over 80 miles per hour. a line of severe storms pummelling the carolinas, downing trees and power lines, knocking out power to thousands. in the midwest. >> a lots of snow. we got dumped on pretty good. >> reporter: white out conditions making a mess on the roads. some areas get as much as two feet of snow in 24 hours. the south recovering from torrential downpours that turned roads into raging rivers. the storm is blamed for at least three deaths in mississippi. wayne county hit again by an ef-2 tornado while recovering

from another ef-3 tornado that damaged dozens of homes just last month. since monday, there have been at least 22 twisters in six states and the peak severe weather system is still weeks away. overnight up to two inches of rain fell in the tri-state area. on the bright side, all that rain should help with the drought conditions we have all been worried about. guys? >> good point. erin mclaughlin for us. erin, thank you. >> that brings us to mr. roker. what a night. >>ive to tell you, erin bringing a little silver lining. we appreciate that. there goes that storm system, backside snow across the eastern great lakes. nothing too much. we're maybe looking at another few inches of snow. winds will be a big problem stretching from new england all the way down into the carolinas. 69 million people. probably be some airport delays and some problems on the roads with high profile vehicles, wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour in some spots from asheville, up to syracuse, boston as far west as chicago. now, out west, we got winter weather advisories, winter storm

nine days. in the latest case yesterday morning, investigators say people in two cars shot at each other on highway 24 near the caldecott tunnel. no one was hit by the gunfire, but at least one other car was struck by a stray bullet. the chp is also investigating an apparent shooting tuesday. southbound 880 at broadway. last tuesday, someone was shot twice in the leg while driving on highway 24 in oakland. another north bay winery is reportedly closed. the chronicle reports brian arden wines in calistoga closed up shop last month after selling its tasting room and production facicility. aording to the press democrat, this would be the fifth wine country venture to close its doors in recent weeks. the industry is getting hit hard by a decline in demand. kari got a look at our forecast for this now thursday morning. good to see some clearing today. yeah, it's going to be off and on with the rain that we are seeing. and we've been tracking it with storm ranger telling exactly where it's raining. and you can get that as well on your smart

fixated fan. right there in the stands. now she is getting set to return to the court. she's opening up about that day for the first time, and nbc's kaylee hartung has that story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. emma raducanu spotted that man who followed her to four tournaments in asia according to bbc sport. showed up near her hotel in dubai and gave her a letter. she saw him at the match triggering an expulsion and ban from all future events. >> i wasn't sure i was going to compete so soon after what happened in dubai but i'm glad i made the decision to come here and i'm loving, yeah, being here. >> reporter: bouncing back from adversity, returning to the court for the first time since her frightening experience two weeks ago in dubai. and speaking out for the first time since the incident. the 22-year-old british player telling reporters, i saw him in the first game of the match, and i was, like, i don't know how i'm going to finish. i literally couldn't see the ball through tears.

i could barely breathe. >> this is very, very concerning. >> reporter: it happened early in her second-round match against karolina muchova. >> something has happened and i'm not sure what it was. >> reporter: raducanu leaving the court and ducking behind the umpire's chair after spotting a man who exhibited fixated behavior toward her. the women's tennis association says the man, whose name has not been made public, was ejected from the arena and banned from all wta events. dubai police say he was detained and ordered to stay away from raducanu who chose to drop the charges. after the match, raducanu said i completely broke down in tears. there was just so much emoon. i needed a week off to take a breather. raducanu says she feels better posting cheerful selfies in the california desert. >> i'm happy to be at indian wells. it's my favorite tournament outside of the slams. w.

>> she was made to feel unsafe. i think her experience is one that is shared by a lot of over female athletes. >> reporter: one of those, tennis superstar monica selless, who in 1993 went through a terrifying experience on the court when she was stabbed in the back during a tournament in germany by a member of the crowd. now over 30 years later, fans still fearing for the safety of female players. >> it's -- it's just so disturbing. you can imagine how she felt in that moment. are there any protections in place? >> wta has protections in place for female players like security officers who can escort them to and from the match court. she was given extra protection at that tournament when she raised concerns. but she's now talking about the concerns she has when she's away from the court. like how she's going about living her daily life back home in england. this is just an evolving situation with eyes on it. she declined our request for comment. but guys, keep in mind, we could be seeing a lot more of her. she has her first-round match today.

without congress's approval. the white house says it wants to send education back to the states, but democrats and labor unions argue that dismantling the education department would have devastating consequences for school children. separately, the veterans affairs secretary just announced that s department is aiming to slash 15% of its work force, as many as 80,000 va employees. critics there warn it's america's veterans who will be hurt most by that move. and the supreme court notably delivered the president a setback, rejecting the administration's request to freeze nearing $2 billion for the contraractors whwork for usaid the group that provides food and medicine to countries around the world. tense moments on board a flight from minneapolis to mexico yesterday. a sun country airline's flight was diverted to el paso, texas, because of a security concern. officials did not give any specifics on why they ordered that unscheduled stop.
