mostly clear right now and temperatures right at about 40 degrees as you're stepping out the door. it is 42 in oakland and 36 in sonoma. so where we see these temperatures in the upper 30s, that's where we may have some frost developing over the next couple of hours. but then take a look at our highs for this afternoon in the low to mid 60s, even up to 68 degrees for santa rosa, one of the warmer spots, while san francisco will hit a a high of . and tomorrow will also be a nice warm day as those temperatures go up a few more degrees. so i'll be watching that for you. we'll talk more about the weekend. as of now, looks like it's friday light. mike it is. it's a look at the san mateo bridge. smooth drive. westbound would be your commute direction east and west. moving very nicely. a light traffic flow down here across the bay. we're looking at the richmond bridge. the bay bridge, all at speed. no slowing. not even for highway 37. that will change over likely the next 20 minutes there in the westbound direction out of vallejo. contra costa county looks great. highway four out of antioch all the way in toward concord, 680 off the walnut

yesterday, maybe president trump walking back his 25% tariffs on more imports from canada and mexico for one month, just two days after putting the levies in place. adamant the reversal was not prompted by concerns over higher prices for u.s. consumers and stock market drops. i'm not even looking at the market because long term, the united states will be very strong with what's happening here. the temporary reprieve on everything from avocados to auto parts targets goods covered by the us-mexico-canada trade agreement negotiated in the first trump term. but about 60% of canadian imports and half of those from mexico are still subject to the 25% tariffs. and all bets are off. one month from now, when president trump wants reciprocal tariffs on virtually every u.s. trading partner to begin, we just weren't treated right. we were ripped off. american businesses in limbo. 30 more days to worry about it. as of february, jobs report due out

to monitor these headlines as they unfold. this morning the deal to sell the oakland coliseum appears to be in jeopardy. it was supposed to be completed last night, but didn't happen today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live. he's following this. what do you know, bob? well, we know that the deal is not dead. but as you mentioned, laura, the deal to sell the oakland coliseum to a private investment group could be in jeopardy. last night was the deadline for the city of oakland to sell their half of the coliseum to a private investment group called the african american sports and entertainment group. now, the 11th hour snag was the result of missing paperwork. attorneys for alameda county, which still must approve the sale, say that as long as they receive two crucial documents from the buyers of the coliseum, the sale can move forward. now the founder of the african american sports and entertainment group, which struck a deal to buy the a's half of the coliseum and now wants to buy the city of oakland's half. they say
5:07 am
attorneys are already working to get the needed paperwork to finish the deal, and that is the release document from communities for a better environment for the litigation between the a's, the county and cbe. and they want the estoppel, which is just a deed document, which is very simple. i've heard it before that today is the last day and that never happened. so we have time. i'm confident, but we do want to move it along. it's taken too long for this process. we went down this process last year and they've been negotiating with the county for some time, and their investors are ready to walk away from this deal. if it does not happen today. that was the interim mayor of oakland expressing concern at investors backing the sale might walk away. since yesterday's deadline has come and gone. now the county and the main investment group expect this to be just a minor delay. as i mentioned, they say the documents could arrive as early as today, with a

5:10 am
some cold weather and a little bit of rain here and there, we are going to take a break from all of that and see things warming up, but we are starting out with some patchy frost this morning and as we go throughout the day, lots of sunshine and it will be a dry and mild weekend. but next week we'll see rain returning on monday and then again for the middle of the week. we are dry once again as you're heading out, but it's only 38 degrees in dublin right now, so very chilly start this morning. we'll see a lot of 30s for the inland valleys. and then throughout the day we're headed for thehe upper 50s and low 60s, eventually making it up to 64 degrees there in dublin, 66 in oakland. and we will see a high of 66 degrees in napa and novato as well. so i'll be tracking that. we'll talk about some things going on this weekend. coming up, mike has a look at where you can fill up for a bit less kari. it's the same spot for our best. we'll finish strong with the best deal in the bay. contra costa county is in pinole. 379 at marathon and central gas on san pablo avenue. been that way all week, holding strong one spot. a new low for

morning to make sure that they're first in line. ain't no frenzy like a costco frenzy, right? all right. it's been a rough week on the markets. we've got a big jobs number coming ahead. we can take a look at the future, see what's going to happen. a little green is not going to help. but man that's just a little green plus. abracadabra. abra na in her tongue she said time for love tonight monsters paws up. lady gaga's new album officially out and we're checking out the tracks everyone's talking about this morning. keep it here. you're watching

5:16 am
as investors tried to figure out this on again off again nature of president trump's tariffs. stock market volatility indexes hit new highs signaling investors expect more very big moves on the market. walgreens indeed taking itself off the stock market going private shares in tesla fell again, down more than 5% on thursday. we get the jobs report today. it may not reflect all the big government layoffs as it's using last month's data. the unemployment rate also depends on people self-reporting their job status. not clear. a lot of government employees know if they were really fired or they'll be asked back. there's going to be a crypto conference at the white house today, though we have little detail. we do know president trump signed an executive order that created a u.s. crypto reserve. that is, the u.s. will hold crypto as an investment, which satisfies one of trump's campaign promise. but it's not at all what crypto
5:17 am
supporters were hoping for. the u.s. will simply hold on to the bitcoin it already has. the white house will not use taxpayer payer money to buy more, not just bitcoin. u.s. will hold on to ether, solana, cardano and something called xrp. that's a coin created by a silicon valley company called ripple. it was originally designed as a way to insulate international trade from the vagaries of currency values, and it made its investors rich. here's an interview shortly after xrp's invention with ceo brad garlinghouse, business insider says it's worth $9 billion. i have read that report. $9 billion. brad. blink if that's true. yes. he just blinked. look, i think this is a dynamic where i think about the long term success, okay? so it's $9 billion. that's no no, no okay. so we've had one of the richest people we've ever interviewed. the u.s. trade deficit surged to a new record in january. economists say american factories are buying up

parts quickly because they're so confused about tariffs. instagram going to add a new feature allowing people to set up community chats. all the members of the chat you set up will be able to contribute a lot, like discord and bloomberg compared the prices of gasoline with electricity rates and determine california is one of the most expensive places to charge an electric car. if you compare the same car with the same mileage rates, electric cars are about 10% cheaper to fuel in california than gas in massachusetts. electric cars are actually more expensive. in washington state, it costs just 38% as much as gas to fuel up an electric car. i think this says a lot less about electric cars and a lot more about electric rates. right. which californians pay a lot now, a lot of us who own evs also own solar panels. so that's right. so if you're able to do that at home, giving back to right away. all right. thanks guys. well, excitement is building in one east bay neighborhood this morning. that's because a new costco is
5:19 am
opening in just a couple of hours in contra costa county. it's located at lone tree plaza, right on the border of brentwood and antioch. a ribbon cutting ceremony is set for 730 this morning. got to get there early, followed by the store opening at 8:00. our crew actually stopped by last night about 7:00, and people were already camping out, along with employees preparing for this morning's opening. they got to get it all ready. antioch pd is warning people to plan ahead for a lot of traffic. this will be costco's fifth location in contra costa county. all right. calling all little monsters. overnight, lady gaga dropped her sixth solo studio album, and it's sure to cause mayhem on the dance floor. take a listen. take it to the ground. in a beat and poisoned apples. take off. right. i'll get you. take you to the garden of eden. i'll take to take you to the
5:20 am
garden of eden. so that's a little bit of garden of eden. that's the third track off our new album entitled mayhem. the album harkens the sounds of 80s and 90s pop songs and throwback to og gaga mayhem. already receiving positive reviews from a multitude of critics gaga is set to host what she's calling a dance party in the desert. this is when she headlines coachella next month, and she's going to be on saturday night live this weekend. wow. it's my mind goes odd places. so you talk about og gaga, and i thought that'd be great if she changed her name to og gaga. along with that. keep going on that one just for one album. speaking of gardens, i wanted to talk about spring. yes. have you planted yours yet? no, not yet, i haven't, not yet, i have. you guys had some cleanup first? yeah, we had a lot of weeds, but we are now 13 days, less than two weeks until the first day of spring. and this weekend is when we will be
5:21 am
setting our clocks forward. so another step closer to having those longer days and also enjoying more time in the afternoon and the evening with sunshine. the storm system we had yesterday is now long gone. we can see it even starting to clear. southern california moving its way through arizona, and we are starting out with some much colder air. we're now down to 40 degrees in san jose. walnut creek, as well as palo alto is at 41 and it's 46. in san francisco. let's zoom in to the south bay to check out our afternoon highs, where we are headed for 64 degrees in los gatos and 66 degrees in san jose. mostly sunny with a light wind. and even though we're starting out with some cool temperatures, it will be warmer than yesterday with a high of 68 degrees in antioch and 66 in hayward, 64 in san mateo today, and also looking at some low 60s in san francisco. for the north bay, the warmest temperature will be 68 degrees in sonoma and
5:22 am
in santa rosa, and we warm up even more so tomorrow as well as sunday. but then on monday we were expecting a chance of rain. but as of now, it looks like that storm system is heading a little bit farther south. we may continue on with some dry conditions until the atmospheric river arrives on wednesday, so that's going to be the busy day where we start to see some widespread and heavy rain coming in that will last through thursday as well. so until then, we're enjoying some mild weather and we're looking at temperatures going from upper 60s to the low 60s for early next week and then upper 50s as we see that rain moving in on wednesday for san francisco, expect the highs to be in the 60s this weekend and once again, rain returning for the middle of next week. mike, you've been watching the commute. how's it flowing? it's flowing well. it's friday light, so still, the bay bridge toll plaza has very little volume, i guess. no backup at all. we'll track the approach c coming tough the maze and the rest of the east shore.
5:23 am
even looking to the north bay. highway 37 usually shows some slowing by now, but not even the briefest of folks getting off of their accelerator there. highway four moves nicely since we have time. you talked about the new costco over there in brentwood. that's just over here off lone tree and highway four. so this is the area they're talking about. more congestion. there's already a shopping area there, so it'll just mean some more excited customers for the rest of the day. moving very smooth. and that makes me excited about the commute. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. we have much more news ahead on today in the bay. but first, calling all young artists out there. we're talking about those painters, writers, storytellers. rci is growing up in art. america art essay and video contest is back celebrating 30 years. so this year's theme is facing my fears and it is challenging. k through 12 students across the bay area to reflect on how they manage fear and turn it into strength. whether it's through painting a personal essay or video. this is your chance to win cash prizes. so nbc bay area isroud to

off the job after contract negotiations fail. we're live with details on their demands and the impacts commuters will be facing. plus, combating san francisco's drug crisis. new plans. city leaders are laying out in the promises they're making about response times for emergency calls. also taking action today. thousands of people are expected to stand up for science nationwide. the protests taking place right here in the bay area. this is today in the bay. and a good morning to you. thanks so much for making us a part of your friday morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at that friday forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. it's a cold morning,
5:32 am
so we're starting out with a frost advisory in some of our inland valleys this morning. that will be in effect through 9:00, as we could see those temperatures dipping into the upper 30s, even some mid 30s in spots. so where we do have the blue shading, that's where we may see the very cold temperatures and will be in the mid 30s as we go into the next few hours. check out danville 35 degrees and 35 in fairfield and 36 degrees in sonoma in livermore. we' going to also have a chilly morning, but a nice warm up going into the afternoon. headed for the mid 60s today with a lot of sunshine. and our temperatures in the south bay also will make it into the mid 60s. so we'll talk about some events going on this weekend to help you enjoy the sunshine. and mike, you're looking at highway 101 in san jose. yeah. no sunshine yet. no headlights. so a few more. let's look at the rdways. we have a few more headlights going north. it started to clear up again, so it's very quickly saw that travel pass our camera. the arrow shows a little north of there around oakland road.
5:33 am
there's a little blip. and this is not necessarily too big of a surprise. we'll watch for that to build over the next ten minutes. for that first burst through san jose should last just a short bit of time. be clearing by before 6:00 for that first slowing and the first slowing in the north bay does show up for highway 37 again, true to form for friday. a little bit later, a few minutes later than normal because it's lighter traffic overall, a smooth drive. and out of contra costa county we have only an 18 minute drive for vasco road, marsh creek down to 580, which moves smoothly. back to you. well, speaking of the commute, might get ready for a strike that will impact your commute. whether you take vta in the south bay or not. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live from san jose with what we all need to know ahead of monday morning. kris. well, good morning to you, laura. so vta bus and train operators gave notice that they plan to walk off the job on monday morning. that means that if you use vta, you need to make alternate plans, but also if you drive to work or to school or wherever you're going, you're going to
5:34 am
have a lot more company on the roadways. if you use rideshares, you will likely see more demand as people try to get where they're going as well. now, the contract negotiations did not continue, and now that means that the vta operators will officially begegin their strike one minute after midnight. 1500 bus and train operators will be off the job during that work stoppage. amalgamated transit union is their union. that's the local 265. they are scheduled to gather later today. now the two sides are at an impasse over wages. vta offering 9% over three years. the union is asking for 18% over the same period. but the union spokesman told me that vta also wants sole authority about which grievances go to arbitration, and that's holding up the deal to this is a very competitive offer. it continues to keep our front line workers as the second highest paid of transportation agencies in the bay area, them having
5:35 am
unilateral authority on deciding if a, you know, a grievance holds merit or not. i mean, we can't have that, right? that's the resolution process is, is the base of the entire agreement. and if we don't have that, then the entire agreement is meaningless. now, one thing that both sides seem to agree on, when i talked with both of them, is that they feel bad that the riding public is now stuck in the middle. of course, they have the weekend to try to work something out, but if that doesn't happen, that strike begins at the stroke of midnight on monday morning. by the way, the amalgamated transit union, this local chapter has been around for more than 100 years. this would be the first time they ever go on strike in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. well, it could be a very, very busy monday. marcus, we're going to give it to you now. all right. thanks, laura. well, you know, workers in santa clara county office of education are expected to learn as soon as today if they still have a job. this is in the wake of the
5:36 am
layoffs, which were in the works before the recent wave of federal funding cuts. some of the most critical programs at risk include a head start program for at risk students, preschools and immigration education. when workers were first notified last month, leaders cited declining enrollment and a multimillion dollar budget deficit. but the office also fears more federal funding cuts ahead. this is to head start and preschool programs. employees are on edge right now. i haven't received my letter yet. i know that it's coming, but it's super, super worrisome because with inflation and the rise, we have a mortgage that we have to pay, we have a car. note that we have to pay. now, you may remember the board of education last october fired former superintendent mary ann dewan. and we actually did ask for a more recent comment on those layoffs. they referred us to the earlier staff letter and news release, calling the cuts unfortunate but necessary. there
5:37 am
is growing pushback against president donald trump's attempt to cut funding for medical research. a federal judge blocked some of those cuts in the national institutes of health. but still today, thousands of people pla to protest today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us from san francisco this morning. and ginger, this is where one of those rallies are going to take place. but what is the message they're trying to send with this protest? well, g good morning, marcus and laura. the message, which will be amplified in washington, d.c. and across 30 cities nationwide, is simple. stand up for science, the group that organized the movement behind stand up for science, has organized a protest in dc and more rallies across the country, which includes, as you mentioned, one here in the city at san francisco's civic center plaza. these protests are in response to efforts from the trump administration to cut hundreds of millions of dollars used for medical research into illnesses like alzheimer's, cancer and heart disease. we
5:38 am
spoke with a researcher at uc berkeley who tells us these cuts will cripple a nationwide system of scientific research that is already under duress. the right wing media, you know, fox and, and, and their allies have have really painted what the government is doing as cutting waste. and that is that couldn't be farther from the truth. everything that is being cut is being cut very indiscriminately and without any regard for how for the long term impact and what i, wh i was saying before is just that, that science is a fragile ecosystem and cutting funding, even temporarily, which has already happened, really jeopardizes the long term future of our of our country's science. so the rally here in san francisco is scheduled for 1 to 3 this afternoon. that will happen at civic center plaza. there are also events scheduled
5:39 am
at uc berkeley, santa clara university and uc santa cruz, as well as in palo alto and sonoma. now, today's marches have a similar spirit to marches that took place back in 2017 that was called the march for science. that time, however, scientists were standing up, defending and defending the threat of cuts where this time around, they're already feeling it. we'll bring you the latest from that online and on air at nbcbayarea.com. we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay, no matter where you look, a lot of folks are feeling those cuts right now or fear of them. all right. thank you. ginger. well, speaking of san francisco in san francisco, police there laying out their next steps in tackling the city's drug crisis. last night, they hosted a town hall at marina middle school to talk about the recent response to crime. it follows the bus last week in jefferson square park, in an area some people have called exploding open air drug market. officers last week arrested or cited about 80
5:40 am
