ripped off right now at 6:00. tariff turmoil an about face from president donald trump as he delays taxes on certain goods from canada and mexico. we're live from washington with more on the reason he's reversing course and wall street's reaction to the changes. also, a live look at the oakland coliseum, where the plans to redevelop are being stalled. the reason county supervisors are holding off on the sale for now.
6:01 am
also, a major announcement from another bay area university. the reason more sports teams are now on the chopping block. this is today in the bay. this is also friday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. wow. they got some applause. friday. i'm marcus washington. we've got you covered on all fronts this morning. mike's taking a look at those roads for us, but kari has that weekend forecast, and it is something to smile about. yes, it will be a great weekend, even though it's starting out very chilly this morning. we have a clear sunrise, and we can see that over san francisco. a little bit of light in the sky right now. the temperatures start out in the 30s and 40s, but we'll head for a clear and warm weekend and rain returns next week. here's a look. live in dublin this morning. always showing off this time of day with the sunrise. and we are going to see temperatures. very cool to start in the upper 30s right now, but a quick warm up
6:02 am
will be on the way as we head toward late morning into the afternoon. and mike, you're seeing a bigger than normal backup at the bay bridge. yeah, we showed cinthia over in the weather center and she said, yeah, that's exactly it. we don't really have this backup. this is a big backup. reason was because of an earlier crash on the span which has been cleared, but that was not before it cued the backup and rippled back to the toll plaza itself. it's moving smoothly. we should see some good recovery. perhaps a little lightning at the toll plaza will watch to make sure that we at least have a smooth flow through the maze. no surprises though, anywhere south or anywhere north of there and east of there, we're looking at a nice drive through concord and walnut creek. anywhere south of there we have green sensors showing up the recovery for the first slowing in san jose, and it looks like that crew has cleared up from 237. they were doing pothole repair work. it looks like the speeds are improving. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, just two days after u.s. tariffs went into effect against the nation's top trading partners, president donald trump is reversing course. he's actually holding off on taxing some imports from mexico and canada, at least for now. todayn the bay's alice

barr joining us live from washington this morning. and alice, another hot note here. the president is now saying that it's not solely up to elon musk when it comes to hiring and firing, but his cabinet secretaries actually have the ultimate decision when it comes to staying or going. marcus. and we have even more developments to bring you on the economy. there's a new february report showing the u.s. economy added 151,000 jobs, and unemployment ticked up to 4.1% in the first full month of the trump presidency. that report just out a half hour ago economists, though, say that it's too early to capture the full impact of doge layoffs in that picture that alongside more changes to president trump's tariff plans that are keeping everyone guessing what's coming next, if you would have seen the people yesterday, maybe president trump walking back his 25% tariffs on more imports from canada and mexico for one month, just two days after putting the levies in

place, adamant the reversal was not prompted by concerns over higher prices for u.s. consumers and stock market drops. i'm not even looking at the market because long term, the united states will be very strong with what's happening here. the temporary reprieve on everything from avocados to auto parts targets, goods covered by the us-mexico-canada trade agreement negotiated in the first trump term. but about 60% of canadian imports and half of those from mexico are still subject to the 25% tariffs. and all bets are off. one month from now, when president trump wants reciprocal tariffs on virtually every u.s. trading partner to begin, we just weren't treated right. we were ripped off. american businesses in limbo. 30 more days to worry about it. as of february, jobs report due out today, offers the first full month of employment data under the new trump presidency that while president trump is now proposing a more measured approach toward federal

workforce firings, i want the cabinet members t to keep good people. i don't want to see a big cut where a lot of good people are cut. the president posting praise for the department of government efficiency while noting it's now up to cabinet secretaries, to be very precise, as to who will remain and who will go. using a scalpel instead of a hatchet. if they can cut, it's better. and if they don't cut, then ellen will do the cutting. uncertainty from the workforce to the markets. as president trump presses ahead about 15 different fronts. and president trump signed a new executive order overnight to establish a strategic bitcoin reserve funded by bitcoin, seized in court cases that as the president hosts a first ever white house crypto summit today. marcus, back to you. all right. always a lot to follow. what's happening in washington alice barr in washington for us this morning alice. thank you. pope francis is speaking out for the first time since he was hospitalized with double pneumonia. the pontiff sent an audio message
6:06 am
thanking many for their prayers yesterday. it's not known when it was recorded. according to the vatican, the pope remains in stable condition and is still resting after he was admitted to the hospital nearly a month ago. the message, which was delivered in spanish and translated, says quote, i thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers, for my health. from the square. i accompany you from here. may god bless you and the virgin protect you. thank you. shock and sadness at san francisco state. this is where university leaders have announced cuts to the sports department, citing the budget shortfall and declining enrollment. president lynn mahoney announced that elimination of t men's soccer and baseball teams, along with the women's indoor track and field. now, those cuts are scheduled to take effect july 1st. it's also going to follow sonoma state's decision. you may remember back in january when they decided to cuthe entire sports department. now, san jose state leaders, they tell us that they have no immediate plans to cut any of the sports programs.
6:07 am
but we also know that the school is expected to face a difficult budget decision starting next fall. and that's even though the school is bucking csu's declining enrollment trend. you know, san jose state this year has its largest freshman class in campus history. systemwide enrollment is about three percentage points lower than a decade ago. six minutes after the hour on your friday morning, taking a peek outside, look at that from emeryville this morning, looking across the bay. who's happy it's friday. me. one. two. three. you know what? we had some rain this week. it was needed. but it's nice that it's cleared out for the weekend. yeah, just in time. and we are going to see sunshine cold in the mornings, but nice afternoons. and here's a look at where we are seeing some of the colder weather there. shaded in blue in the inland valleys where we are going to see a frost advisory in effect for the next couple of hours. and then throughout the rest of the day, a nice warm up. but this is where we're starting. we're at 35 in danville. it is 36 in
6:08 am
sonoma and 37 in santa rosa. so definily colder than we've seen through the past few days. and looking at concord, we go from 30s to upper 50s at 11:00 and mid 60s for the afternoon. it will be nice and sunny and we'll see more weather like this throughout the weekend. but if you have plans, you might have to fill up the gas tank. where can we save a little bit of money? mike kari we're going to finish strong with our best deal in the contra costa county this morning, as it has been all week. it's in pinole. that one spot marathon, central and marathon and central gas 379 is the price today san pablo avenue. so that's a great deal cheaper than anywhere else in the bay. there's also a new low for a familiar name in san jose, but it's closer to what we saw all week. this is 408 now, a nickel cheaper star gasoline on hillsdale avenue. and the last number we're talking about is for the north bay getaway. we'll see the best in marin county for 29 at mill valley's arco on redwood highway. you go to gasbuddy.com, check out where you are or where you will be for your best prices on the roadways. we're looking at
6:09 am
pretty great speeds right now. all of bay except for the bay bridge is moving very smoothly. we had a crash on the bay bridge span. it cleared and recovery across still slow, and there's still the backup, but sorted out to its normal pattern over there at the oakland side. maybe a little heavier than we often see, but things are moving a little better, so there actually is some improvement. we have more hopes for better flow of traffic that's moving better, moving better than it was. maybe not monday through thursday, but for a friday we had a big backup starting to move. i'll watch this. perfect. thanks for keeping your eye on all that. well this morning. the deal to sell the oakland coliseum appears to be in jeopardy. here is a live look right now. and think about it. it was supposed to be completed last night. that deal. well, that didn't happen. you're right. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live. he's been following this for us. kind of fell apart there, bob. but the deal is not dead. but as you mentioned, the deal for the city of oakland to sell the coliseum could be in jeopardy. good morning to you, marcus and laura. last night was the deadline for the city to sell its share. their half of the

coliseum to the private investment group called the african american sports and entertainment group. the 11th hour snag was the result of missing paperwork. now, attorneys for alameda county, which still must approve the sale, say that as long as they receive two crucial documents from the buyers of the coliseum, the sale can move forward. now. the founder of the african american sports and entertainment group, which struck the deal to buy the a's half of the coliseum and now is trying to buy the city of oakland's half, says attorneys are already working to get the needed paperwork to finish this deal, and that is the release document from communities for a better environment for the litigation between the a's, the county and cbe. and they want the estoppel, which is just a deed document, which is very simple. i've heard it before that today is the last day and that never happened. so we have time. i'm confident, but we do want to move it along. it's taken too long for this process. we went down this process last
6:11 am
year and they've been negotiating with the county for some time, and their investors are ready to walk away from this deal. if it does not happen today. that was the interim mayor of oakland expressing concern at the investors backing this sale might walk away. since yesterday's deadline has come and gone, the county and the main investment group expect this again to just be this, to be just a minor delay. they say the documents could actually come as early as today, with the vote by the county on tuesday bob redell today in the bay. all right. want to certainly follow there. all right bob, thank you. you know what's happening. what's happening. costco is opening up. so that creates so much frenzy. i know. coming up next on today in the bay, the shoppers actually camping out this morning to make sure that they are first in line. hey, you know where there's a sale? it's on wall street because stocks are a lot lower. we'll take a look at that and we'll go out to the futures this morning and see if we can get any relief up. nope. plus. we are amber. we are

president trump's tariffs. stock market vololatility index has ht new highs, signaling investors expect more. very big moves on the market now. walgreens indeed taking itself off the stock market going private february jobs report just hit our desks showing 151,000 jobs added last month. less than expected. now, jobs are a trailing indicator. they tell us what happened, not what's going to happen. and they don't include many of those sudden government cuts. unemployment rate 4.1%. there's going to be a crypto conference at the white house today, though we have little detail. we do know president trump signed an executive order that created a u.s. crypto reserve. that is, the u.s. will hold crypto as an investment, which satisfies one of trump's campaign promises. but it's not at all what crypto supporters were hoping for. the u.s. is just simply going to hold on to bitcoin. it already had. the white house will not use taxpayer money to buy more,
6:17 am
not just bitcoin. the u.s. is going to hold on to ether, solana, cardano and something called xrp. xrp is a coin created by a silicon valley company called ripple. originally designed as a way to insulate international trade from the vagaries of currency values, and it made its inventors quite rich. here's an interview shortly after xrp's invention with ceo brad garlinghouse. you know, brad, i want to ask you about how much brad owns. business insider says it's worth $9 billion. i have read that report, $9 billion. brad, blink if that's true. yes. he just blinked. look, i think this is a dynamic where i think about the long term success, okay? so it's $9 billion. that's no no, no okay. so we've had not every day you make $9 billion inventing something. the u.s. trade deficit surged to a new record in january. economists say american factories are buying up foreign parts as quickly as they can because they're confused about the

guys. you bet. i wasn't saying he needed one. i didn't know where you were going with that. all right. new at six six to tell you about classic style. once again arriving in san francisco, ralph lauren just opened its newest store yesterday, and it's in the heart of jackson square. the company says its new location helps strengthen its presence on the west coast. ralph lauren has several outlet stores in the bay area, including milpitas. gilroy. livermore. it also opens as many companies have decided to shut down or move out of san francisco recently. nice to see them back. you remember going to the union square area store when i was in college? all right. well, excitement certainly building in one east bay neighborhood this morning. that's because a new costco opening in just a couple of hours in contra costa county. we've got a live look. look at the people lined up out there. they've been there overnight. this is over at lone tree plaza, right on the border of brentwood and antioch. a ribbon cutting

right. definitely. i have been here forever, people. all right. we are going to have a great weekend for all of the birthday celebrations or whatever you have going on. we are counting down to spring as well. we are less than two weeks away. we are just 13 days until the first day of spring. and this weekend is when we spring forward and set our clocks forward one hour between saturday night and sunday morning. so we're waking up on this friday, heading off to work and needing the sunglasses, but also a heavier coat because our temperatures have dipped into the 30s for a lot of our inland valleys. 38 degrees right now will be at 49 at 9:00. you can see how fast it warms up today. so even though it is very chilly out there now, we will have a nice afternoon as we make it up to 64 in los gatos and 66 in san jose. it will also be in the mid 60s for much of the east bay, with antioch one of the warmer spots, 68 degrees and 66, in hayward, near the coast. it will be in the mid 60s today and for san francisco,

some upper 50s and low 60s and upper 60s for much of the north bay. looking ahead, we are going to see some above normal rainfall as we go into next week, along with some below normal temperatures. as the next storm system comes in, it brings us a lot of wet weather starting next wednesday, so take a look at our 7-day forecast in the upper 60s this weekend. but much cooler as that rain rolls in on wednesday. mike, you're seeing an unexpected backup at the bay bridge. we are. we had an earlier crash which, cleared from the span, caused a big backup at the toll plaza. because it's friday, though, we can actually see some recovery. we see movement on the span. the better movement across the span. and the backup from about the incline all the way to the toll plaza. they may speed those metering lights up. we do see the approach starting to move better now. back to you. thanks, mike. all right. we've got a lot more ahead for you this morning here on today in the bay. first calling all young artists. the growing up in america art essay and video contest is back celebrating 30 years. this is

of people are expected to stand up for science nationwide. the protest, taking place right here in the bay area. plus looming layoffs, cuts coming to santa clara county office of education, which has some educators worried about their future. how soon? they are expected to find out if they're being let go. this is today in the bay. good friday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at that forecast for you. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect outside. friday is here, and so are the pleasant temperatures later today. later today, it's starting out cold. now that the storm systems have moved on, we're left with some frosty conditions for some of our inland valleys for the next 2.5 hours. after that, it's going to be sunny, and we're going to see a dry and mild weekend. and we are going to see some more rain coming back to the bay area. looking ahead, a live look at palo alto as you're heading out the door. it's only 41 degrees,

but there will be a quick warm up throughout late morning into the afternoon. eventually we'll make it up to the mid 60s for today. we'll talk about events going on this weekend, coming up in the full microclimate forecast. laura. sounds good. thanks so much, kari. we'll get ready for a strike that will impact your commute. whether you take vta in the south bay or not. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live from san jose with what you need to know ahead of monday. this could get messy, chris. yeah. good morning to you, laura. mike certainly will have his hands full on monday. i will tell you that the atu local 265, the union for vta bus and light rail operators, hand-delivered their notice of intent to strike for monday morning last night. and now, if you take vta, this will have an impact on you. if you drive to work, you may see more people on the roadway. if you use rideshares to get where you're going, you may likely face some increased demand. now, vta operators officially will begin their strike at 1201 monday morning. 1500 bus and train
6:33 am
operators could be off the job during this work stoppage, and their union, the amalgamated transit union local 265, is scheduled to gather lat on today. now the two sides are at an impasse over wages. vta is offering 9% over three years, and the union is asking for 18% over the same period. the vta says this is a good offer, but the union says pay is not the only thing that matters to the members. this is a very competitive offer. it continues to keep our front line workers as the second highest paid of transportation agencies in the bay area. them having unilateral authority on deciding if a, you know, a grievance holds merit or not. i mean, we can't have that, right? that's the resolution process is, is the base of the entire agreement. and if we don't have that, then the entire agreement is meaningless. now, this union has been around for more than 100 years. when they go on strike, it will be the
6:34 am
first time in their history. by the way, laura, one thing that both sides seem to agree on is that they feel bad that the public is caught in the middle. both sides say they hope that they understand and plan ahead. back to you. yeah, i'm sure they do. it's tough, but they're trying to get their point across as well. thank you very much, chris. well, workers in santa clara county office of education are expected to learn soon, as today, if they will still have a job. this in the wake of those layoffs, which were in the works before the recent wave of federal funding cuts. some of the most critical programs may be at risk, including a head start program for at risk students, preschools and immigrant education. when workers were first notified last month, leaders cited declining enrollment and a multi-million dollar budget deficit. but the office also fears more federal funding cuts ahead. the head start program and preschool programs empyees are on edge. i haven't received my letter yet. i know that it's coming, but it's super, super worrisome
6:35 am
because with inflation on the rise, we have a mortgage that we have to pay. we have a car. note that we have to pay. you may remember the board of education last october fired former superintendent mary ann dewan, and we did ask for a more recent comment on those layoffs. they actually referred us to an earlier staff letter and news release, calling the cuts unfortunate, but necessary. there's growing pushback against president donald trump's attempt to cut funding for medical research. a federal judge blocked some of those cuts in the national institutes of health, but some today, thousands of people are expected to protest today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joining us live from san francisco this morning. this is where one of those rallies will take place. now, ginger, talk to us about the message here. what are they trying to send out to folks? good morning, marcus and laura. the message is simple, guys. it's going to be amplified in the nation's capital, as well as 30 cities across the country. and the message is stand up for
6:36 am
science. the group behind this movement, stand up for science, has organized a protest in washington, d.c, as well as in cities across the country. 30 cities nationwide. that includes here in san francisco. that one will take place at san francisco's civic center plaza. now, these protests are in response to efforts from the trump administration to cut hundreds of millions of dollars used for medical research into illnesses like alzheimer's, cancer and heart disease. we spoke with a researcher at uc berkeley who tells us these cuts will cripple a nationwide system of scientific research that is already under duress. the right wing media, you know, fox and, and, and their allies have have really painted what the government is doing as cutting waste. and that is that couldn't be further from the truth. everything that is being cut is being cut very indiscriminately and without any regard for how
6:37 am
for the long term impact and what i, what i was saying before is just that, that science is a fragile ecosystem and cutting funding, even temporarily, which has already happened, really jeopardizes the long term future of our of our country. science. so the local rally here in san francisco is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. today at civic center plaza. there are also events that are scheduled at uc berkeley, santa clara universit, and uc santa cruz, as well as in palo alto and in sonoma. now, today's marches have a similar spirit to marches that we've seen in the past. during the first trump administration, those marches and rallies were called march for science. but that is a bit different because that was defending the work of scientists, which was back then only under the threat of cuts in san francisco. ginger conejero

saab today in the bay. thank you very much, ginger. san francisco police laying out their next steps in tackling the city's drug crisis. last night, they hosted a town hall at marina middle school to talk about the recent response to crime. it follows the bus last week in jefferson square park in an area. some people have been called exploding open air drug market. officers last week arrested or cited about 80 people. district attorney brooke jenkins says town halls are important to get feedback from the community. we need to give them access to us. we need to reassure them that we're doing our jobs and really allowing them to ask questions gets at the heart of what they have concerns about. police are also promising to be more vigilant in areas including officer response times, responding to property crimes and boosting traffic violation enforcement. a live look over at oracle park this morning. that's where giants fans tomorrow have a great chance to get fired up for a new season. okay, so that's when the

giants are going to wrap up their 2025 fan fest tour. this is going to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. over at the ballpark. they're going to be open to fans to just drop in. it actually includes a free. fear the beard bobblehead for the first 10,000 fans who show up. fans can also check out some of those less accessible parts of the ballpark, including the field and dugout, and it's going to include some big name giants from the past. we're talking about j.t. snow, sergio romo. tickets are free, but you do have to get them ahead of time. that's fun. i can't believe spring around the corner baseball. it's going to be nice this weekend. kari. yes, at least for the afternoon at 10:00 in the morning. san francisco. it's going to be chilly out there, so make sure you're bundled up. it will be in the low 50s. as we go into the end of fan fest. it will be at about 60 degrees, nice and sunny, and we hold steady at 60 degrees in time for the warriors game at chase center tomorrow night and dropping down to the mid 50s, and it will be clear throughout
