good friday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. today, lots of sunshine and gradually warming up. we're headed for the mid 60s for a lot of our inland areas, but dropping back down to the 30s tonight. it will be slightly warmer tomorrow. we do have a really nice weekend ahead with sunshine, and just as we're going back to work on monday, it's going to be in the low 60s and mostly cloudy with rain not far behind. by wednesday we could possibly see an atmospheric river weather. mr. melvin? >> mr. roker, thank you, sir. up next our deeply personal conversation with one mother on the cancer diagnosis that changed her life and her role in some ground-breaking research that could very well help save millions of lives. but, first, this is "today" on nbc. rst, this is "toy" on nbc.da

on something that's very important and also very close to your heart. >> thank you, savannah. march is colorectal cancer awareness month. as you may know, i lost my brother, lawrence, to the disease a few years ago. we are happy to have allies dressed in blue on the plaza, and also across the country at the cologuard classic golf tournament. we want to tell you about ground breaking research being done in boston to help find cancer before it spreads. >> nicely done. >> when stephanie dobson thought about the future, her plans did not include cancer. a working mom with two young children, she chalked up her gastrointestinal problems to her cent pregnancies. when they didn't go away, she got a colonoscopy. >> i got a call the next day.
8:37 am
turns out it was stage three rectal cancer. >> you were at a coffee shop? >> i was at starbucks on charles street in boston. lif i left my coffee. i walked out. >> she went to the institute, and her treatment plan included genetic testing. >> finding out my kids have a 50% of having it was a lot tougher than just finding out, you know, my own health news. >> lynch syndrome is a mutation in genes that fix flaws in dna. without these so-called repair genes, the body has trouble fighting certain cancers. it can increase the risk of colorectal cancer from 20% to 60%. it can also lead to an increased risk for ovarian, uterine, pancreatic and skin cancers. stephanie's doctor runs the
8:38 am
lynch syndrome center at dana farber. it's the first in the nation. the center offers the latest cancer treatments as well as counseling on nutrition, fertile, and mental health issues, and the doctor says one of the keys to saving even more lives is what's called kcascade testing. >> the cascade testing aspect of this is huge. the person in front of us being treated for cancer, if we find they have lynch syndrome, they have a family,y, they ha siblings, likely parents, aunts, uncles, et cetera. the ability to find it in that person gives us the ability to spread that information throughout their family and get people in for screening. >> while there is no cure, the person with cancer can prevent it in their relatives by urging them to get genetic testing. if they're positive for lynch, the additional screenings can help any disease before it spreads. two of stephanie's family members tested positive for lynch syndrome and they're now actually patients at dana farber. as for her illness, stephanie
8:39 am
was treated with immunotherapy and is now cancer-free. she does have to go back for regular screenings. but she has her life back now and says it is richer than ever. when something like this happens to you when you are young, how does it change the way you live your life after? >> i am more present. i think being a mom of two young kids forces that a bit. i'm far less bothered by the things that used to cause me stress and anxiety. >> yeah. we should mention, lynch syndrome does not usually lead to childhood cancer. stephanie and her husband plan to talk about genetic testing for their children when they're a little bit older. let's go to tucson, arizona. we have allies dressed in blue from the colorectal cancer clinic. i serve as an unpaid board member, including dr.

christopher liu who serves at the colorado cancer center. good morning to you, sir. >> good morning. thank you for having me. >> let's talk about this survey that they wrapped up a short time ago that show how americans view cancer screenings. what did the survey find? >> so the colorectal cancer alliance performed a large survey of people's perceptions and what they thought about colorectal screenings and colonoscopies. two-thirds of respondents said they would rather file their taxes than get a colonoscopy. so why is this? we know about 25% of the respondents were scared to get a colonoscopy. we understand that. it's an additional medical procedure. but an additional 20% felt like they didn't have enough information about the screening. but the reality is this, colorectal cancer is a potentially preventible dooes
8:41 am
diseasase, and iyou find it at its earliest stage, the cure rates are higher than 90%. number one, colonoscopies can prevent cancer. and we want everybody to start screening at the age of 45. you can get more information at getscreened.org. that's getscreened.org. it can be life-saving and i'll tell you what. that sounds a lot better than filing your taxes. >> it does. really quickly here, i know that the alliance that we both work with solely focused on ending colorectal cancer in our lifetime. what's the lalttest on those efforts? what can you tell us? >> we know over the last 15 to 20 years there has been advances in the treatment of colorectal cancer. we also know there's so much more that needs to be done. our patients and their families, they deserve a cure for colorectal cancer. how do we do that? the alliance is committed to ending colorectal cancer through initiatives like project cure crc.
8:42 am
project cure crc is given over $11 million to 24 innovative research projects. this is outstanding, and we know there's so much more that needs to be done. that's why we're here today. we're raising colorectal cancer awareness, but we want to support colorectal cancer research. we want people to donate and for researchers, you can submit proposals. >> a big thanks to you and those behind you as well. please tell them hello. sorry i couldn't get out there this year. and, again, folks, if you are watching this. it is worth repeating what he just said there. early detection is key. please consider getting tested. the screen age hopefully it's been moved. 45 is the screening age. for more information and resources, scan the qr code at the bottom of your screen there and also our website today.com. >> if you have been watching and putting it off, and honestly it's gotten a lot better, it will not be the best day you've ever had, but it is not terrible.
8:43 am
>> 45, men and women, right? >> yes, unless you have a family history. if you have a family history or if you have other medical issues, it may even be sooner than that. check out information on lynch syndrome as well. >> okay. we will shift gears and sit down with a "bridgerton" star turned spy in his new movie. rege-jean page, but first, this is "today" on nbc. rst, is is "tn known for creating memories. no one wants to be known for cancer, but a treatment can be. keytruda is known to treat cancer. fda-approved for 18 types of cancer, including certain early-stage and advanced ccers. one of those cancers is a kind of bladder and urinary tract cancer

>> margaret langford was used a handful of times in 2008 before discontinuance. >> used by whom? >> your wife. >> i see. >> we thrive on that. >> oh, my gosh, okay. we're just chitchatting. rege, good morning. >> good morning. how are you doing? >> i love this movie because i mean, it's a spy movie, but it's not really -- it's not so much an action movie.e. it's a thriller. >> mm-hmm. >> i was just saying that -- that diague is almost like a different language. >> well, everything is in the dialogue. everything is language, but we really hone in on this movie. spy work is mostly about making other people do stuff for you. it is less driving the lamborghini than convincing somebody it is a good idea to drive the lamborghini. >> that's the spy craft. and you've got cate blanchett and piers pbrosnan, and there ae these amazing scenes and it's a psychological thriller. >> it is. we have steven soderberg at the helm carrying this through. >> he did "oceans 11".
8:47 am
>> yes. >> people know. >> he doesn't miss. he is an absolute master at his craft. so the standards of work in this film are b beyond anhing i have ever seen. sitting around the table from michael fassbender, cate blanchett, naomi harris, myself, pierce brosnan, just sets the stage on fire every time he walks onset, and just the joy of coming into work every day and getting to work at that level was beyond beyond. >> were there any nerves? >> weirdly enough, no. >> good. >> work gets a lot easier at that level. you know that whatever you do, the rest of the cast will catch you. whatever you serve across the table, in this verbal game of tennis, you know it's coming back with some topspin on it, and so you really can just relax into that and find all these really cool subtleties, and nuances that are coming off the page. >> i hear you are a secret agent now. you have service knowledge, mi6. you have done so much research.
8:48 am
you, like, know some facts. >> i have had more contact with the secret service in my lifetime than i thought i would, or i should. >> wait a minute. are you a spy? >> if i told you, i would be a terrible one. >> true, true. >> but, no, i had a couple of different conversations for a coupuple movie and you hone in to different angles. a lot of it is about trust. it's abobout findi people's weaknesses and really knowing how to push their buttons without knowing that you're pushing their buttons because that's everything that we do tin this movie. it's everything that steven focuses in on, and we had these very, very deep conversations around that. >> now, you get to have your actual british accent on this. i was reading this morning that when you are trying to work out these different accents, you try it out on the uber driver. >> yeah, you practice wherever you can. >> can you give me an example? >> if i was doing a generic east coast, it allows me to have a conversation with you on your own level. you're not you, like, there's a british guy in the back of the car. say strawberry, and banana, and
8:49 am
it allows me to let you open up a little bit like a spy. see what i'm saying? >> you are scary good at that. >> years of practice. >> that is incredible. >> thank you very much. >> wow. okay. our people, have they forgiven you yet for leaving "bridgerton"? >> i have no idea. i enjoy moments when i meet people on the street. we generally have very joyful communication over it, and they think that we had a really good time on that show. so i'm very, very happy about it. >> we did. that's why we didn't want it to end. >> i mean, the show hasn't ended. the show is still going. i check in with my friends who are on the show and i check in and make sure everyone's okay and they're ready for kind of how things change and you step up into the lead on that show. >> yes. >> everything is pretty copacetic. >> i still hold a candle for you coming back just for something, give the people what they want. i'm also mad the guy from "downtown abbie" was killed off. sorry. spoiler alert. it's like 10 years old now. okay. >> bruce willis is also a ghost. >> yeah. he was dead the whole time.
8:50 am
let me put this out. this is a head shot from when you were, i think, 13. tell me about this. >> somewhere around there. >> tell me about this guy. >> that guy is doing the most, i think is all i can say about that guy. he's obsessed with a super man cut that just won't t happen. >> i like the necklace. all right. i have another one. we will roll some video here, and i want you to tell me about this guy. you were in a punk band. >> yes. i find that it was the most productive way to be angry as a teenager. you know, you could slam the doors at home or you can go out and do that, yell with some other kids. >> but you can sing. i watched it this morning. you sound pretty good. >> i don't appreciate the past tense. maybe i still can sing. >> okay. charge accepted. >> not in this moment. say that about myself. >> we do acceaccents. well, you know we just showed the clip with sterling k. brown, who is a pal of yours. he broke into song on colbert. did you see that? >> yes. i use that as a cautionary tale.
8:51 am
>> unless you are at his level, right? actually, you saw him at the ""vaty fair" actor party. >> i always enjoy running into sterling. he's been incredibly supportive. he talked me through my first "snl" appearance in this building right over here, and he's always -- he's been a very willing and generous brother in this business to me, and i'll always be grateful for that. he's always been a safe place in the room. >> that is such a party. i've actually gotten to go once or twice. i felt like the best thing about it was the in-n-out burg ers at the end. >> yeah, it is cool there is famous people. there is this incredible pizza station right at the back. >> you said lemon pizza, though? >> it is a lemon chicken pizza, which doesn't sound -- >> it doesn't sound good. >> it tastes incredible. those are the hollywood secrets no one knows about. that's what you are getting. >> lemon pizza, this sounds terrible. this sounds like pineapple pizza. you probably like pineapple
8:52 am
pizza. >> far less controversial than pineapple pizza. >> thank you so much. "black bag" hits theaters next friday, march 14th. i know i sound terrible. i'm not contagious. we're back in a moment. >> you sound mysterious like a spy. >> you can say that again. this is "today" on nbc.

welcome back. it is friday, and you know what that means. it is "dateline friday." keith morrison. >> up early because -- >> good morning, good morning. >> keith has been working on what he calls one of the most bizarre and memorable interviews he's ever done. if that's not a tease -- keith, you got an exclusive jailhouse interview with the doomsday mom, lori lori vallow. what can you tell us? >> that's her right there. right there. yeah, you know, you try to prepare for an interview. you prepare, you know, questions you're going to ask and things you want to cover, but you can't
8:55 am
prepare for chaos it turns out, and my oh my. what a strange -- what a strange h hour and a half i spent with that woman who apparently wanted to speak with us too and wanted to tell a story i didn't want to tell because it wasn't true. i wanted to get to the story we knew was the accurate one, but she was as combative and flirtatious and other every thing under the book. >> wow. >> it's just -- >> flirtatious? >> never been stranger than that one. it was an unusual time. >> how could she resist keith morrison? >> that's a popcorn "dateline." >> that's a tease to a tease because keith is going to come back in just a few minutes on the third hour to actually share part of this bizarre interview. >> i don't know if it ever felt personal for you, but she kept saying keith. is that for keith? >> really? >> yeah. >> yes. yeah. apparently in her book, i have had a target on my back for some time. >> what?
8:56 am
>> it's a wild interview. >> okay, keith. we're looking forward to that tonight. >> 9:00, 8:00 central on nbc, but in just a few minutes, keith will come back on the third hour and give us a clip. >> it's incredible. >> you're still my voicemail on my phone. if you call my phone, it's keith. >> that's the way it should be. hello? >> i love you. you're the best. >> we are back after your local news, weather, and -- >> when the school calls, they're, like, what? >> it is very distinct. >> it is.

good morning. it is 856 on marcus washington. the future of oakland's coliseum complex suddenly looks a little more hazy with the deal to sell that property now apparently in limbo. this is all due to an 11th hour snag. alameda county attorneys and the buyers say is the result of missing paperwork. they also say that it's an easy fix that can still be completed before next tuesday, allowing supervisors to sign off on the deal. now, the city of oakland was counting on the deal to be finalized last night. during that deadline and happening now, some still worry that that deal is still in jeopardy. we've posted a full response on all sides on our homepage, and right now, a brand new costco open in
