when and how the couple died. >> nbc's liz kreutz has the very latest from santa fe. >> reporter: this morning authorities announcing legendary actor gene hackman died of heart disease complicated by alzheimer's. the 94-year-old alone after several days after his wife, betsey arakawa died first in their santa fe home. >> i can tell you he was in an advanced state of alzheimer's and it's possible he was not aware she was deceased. >> reporter: the autopsy shows 64-year-old arakawa died of hanta virus, spread from road want droppings as fluid spreads in the lungs. >> a person can die very quickly without medical treatment. >> reporter: officials laying out a time line saying the last known communication with arakawa was february 11th when she was running errands, picking up groceries and dog food before returning home and was not heard from sense. >> numerous e-mails were unopened on her computer on

february 11th. there was no additional outgoing communication from her or known activity after february 11th. >> reporter: police believe hackman was likely in the home for days with his pacemaker showing his last activity a week after his wife's death. do you believe given his alzheimer's status that mr. hackman was able to live on his own and survive for those seven days? >> i'm not aware of what his normal daily functioning capability was. he was in a very poor state of health, and he had significant heart disease. and i think ultimately that is what resulted in his -- in his death. >> reporter: what about starvation? >> there was no food in his stomach, which means he had not eaten recently, but he had also no evidence of dehydration. >> reporter: the couple's dog, zena, that died in her crate is undergoing necropacy, but

officials say it's possible she did starve. this morning after their death sparked nationwide intrigue, answers to the tragic ending of the star and his wife of three decades. authorities are trying to access data from the phones they took from the homes to figure out who they last had contact with. they said right now betsey's last communication is an esmal she sent to her therapist. there's no indication he tried to contact anyone after his wife's death which is not surprising given his alzheimer's. >> liz kreutz in santa fe with the very latest. thank you. wall street ended a tumultuous week on friday with the dow, s&p and nasdaq all closing up. anxiety is very high on wall street these days as investors express concern about tariffs and the economy. nbc's vaughn hilliard is at the white house with much more. good morning, vaughn.

>> reporter: good morning, vicki. and notably president trump and his cabinet are acknowledging these questions about the economy's faith. >> there could be disturbance, a little bit of disturbance. >> reporter: president trump addressing concerns about the economy after a volatile week on wall street amid shifting reports on tariffs and a lackluster jobs report. >> there is always be changes and adjustments. >> reporter: earlier this week the president promising tariffs on canada and mesh co only to reverse after push back from home. 100,000 new jobs were added last month, short of the 170,000 jobs expected. the early data does not take into account the mass layoffs across the federal government. the stock market also took a hit this week. the s&p 500 dropping more than 3% as forecasts around u.s. economic growth continue to cool. federal reserve chair jerome powell saying he will wait to see the greater impacts of trump's actions before further cutting interest rates, a move trump has frequently said should

happen. >> we do not need to be in a hurry, and we are well-positioned to wait for greater clarity. >> reporter: it all comes amid reports of internal clashes with elon musk and his doge team's sweeping government cuts. nbc news learning that according to two people familiar with the exchanges, during a thursday cabinet meeting, secretary of state marco rubio and transportation secretary sean duffy challenged musk over his cuts saying they should have final say over the staffing over their own agencies, president trump denying the report. >> elon gets along great with marco and they're both doing a fantastic job. there is no clash. >> reporter: meanwhile overseas president trump it was quest for peace with ukraine. it comes after president trump threatened sanctions against russia and said putin was committed to peace. peter pressed the president about that on friday. do you, mr. president, think that vladimir putin is taking advantage of the u.s. pause

right now on intelligence and military aid to ukraine? >> i actually think he's doing what anybody else would do. i think he's -- i think he wants to get it stopped and settled. >> reporter: ukraine's western neighbor, poland, preparing for its own possible incursion by russia. its prime minister announcing large scale military training for every atult man dult man in country, adding we are witnessing a significant shift in u.s. policy regarding the russia-ukraine war. now, several key members of the trump canet are set to meet with ukrainian leadership next week in saudi arabia after a week of cut off communication, military aid, and intelligence sharing. president trump this week said he received a letter from president zelenskyy indicating that he wanted to restart peace talks. vicki? >> all right, vaughn hilliard at the white house this morning. thank you, vaughn. we want to turn back to those job numbers, the tariffs, and what it means for your bottom line. so to tell help us out here we

want to bring in nbc's business correspondent, brian cheung. this has an impact on what americans are paying right now, but yesterday we saw the first jobs report or the first full month now of the second trump term. give us a sense what this says about the state of the economy, and also it doesn't account for a lot of those doge job cuts, so that means more cuts to come. >> it was a very busy week for the economy to say the least. showing that the economy is still chugging along as expected. as you mentioned this is the first report we've gotten since the new administration, but the jobs report came in 150,000 below for the month. they were expecting about 170,000, but it's still in pace with the rate we've seen. the unemployment 4.1%, about the same as we've been seeing in the previous months. what was interesting was the categories where we saw the job gains. you can see it on the screen in front of you. health care was the big driver adding 50,000 on the month. a lot of attention on the federal government attracting 10,000, but i want to point out

that doesn't match up with the 75,000 buy outs the white house said were rather taken from the fork in the road offer. so we'll have to see if the other months following reflect that. >> brian, let's talk tariffs. we keep going back and forth. one minute something is tariffs, the other it's not. the president earlier in the week said this would create a little disturbance in the economy. what is your sense americans are feeling as we see prices going up? the market is not loving it. >> no, not at all. it's been a years worth of tariff policy in one week, and he hasn't specified. what day or hour the tariffs are off. as a small business you're wondering if i import something from canada am i going to have to pay 25% more or what, and they'll have to pass a lot of that onto the consumer. target in the hours first after the tariffs were put in place on tuesday, they said, look, we're probably going to have pass that

onto consumers. you see what's happening with eggs. as a wall street trader you also don't like that uncertainty. >> give us a sense what wall street looks like for americans right now. just simply getting eggs americans are wondering what things are going to cost me the next day. >> i've been covering the economy and wall street for the while now, and it's always the case the two are in the same story and predicament but they want the same thing, which is more certainty. as long as there's this uncertainty today it might be on, tomorrow it might be off, today it might be on certain things, tomorrow it might be off on certain things, there's uncertainty which the dow one of the worst weeks in 2025, it reraced all the gains we had seen in 2025. but on main street it's the same thing, the uncertainty about the prices you're going to see at the store. these businesses say the way they price their products in the months to go is going to be dependent if they know whether

those tariffs are going to be on or not. >> brian cheung, appreciate it. >> thank you, brian. new this morning faa investigators are taking the lead trying to figure what caused that spacex rocket to break into pieces shortly after liftoff thursday night. nbc's marissa para in miami. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this was the 8th test flight and despite a successful catch of the rocket booster by the so-called chopstick arms, that's an incredible feat of engineering, but the world's largest rocket then broke into pieces. you can see pieces of debris streaking across the sky. all of that causing enough disturbance to force the faa to ground flights for at least if you different florida airports, disrupting 250 flights. again, we've seen all kinds of videos across social media, that almost apocalyptic sight of debris streaking across the sky even from the view of space. remember this was the second consecutive test flight for star

ship to break apart in the air. the faa now grounding star ship as they begin a spacex led investigation. elon musk is trying to get faa approval for 25 star ship unches a year. last year they had four. all of this the same week we saw two lunar landers make it to the moon. first fire fly blue ghost with these incredible images, and set to explore the moon emphasis south pole in search of ice water landing on its side in a crater. sadly since they didn't stick the landing that is the end of that mission. all of this a testament to the ramped up effort to fulfill promises to bring humans back to the moon and eventually to mars, vicki. >> marissa, we know spacex is set to launch a rocket next week to finally bring back those two astronauts forced to remain on the space station for nine months. do these latest setbacks affect that mission at all?

>> reporter: it's a valid question and not at a all, vicki. they're using a totally different rocket for that mission. star ship is to get humans to mars eventually one day. this is tried and true to get humans back and forth to the space station, so things are looking good for a wednesday launch for crew ten to get to the space station and for them to relieve crew nine to bring butch and sunny home. >> thank you so much. a south carolina man convicted of double murder two decades ago was executed by a firing squad last night. three volunteer prison employees used rifles to carry out the execution of 67-year-old brad sigman. he was convicted in 2002 of killing his ex-girlfriend's parents. sigman is the first american prisoner to die by firing squad in 15 years. he chose that of

colorado and texas. it is going to bring some snow to folks in that same region, but we've also got rain across texas and oklahoma. this is really going to start to get going here as it slides across the gulf coast here through not just today but tomorrow, too. one thing to note notice that batch of rain and snow that will be centered across parts of texas and oklahoma. for the most part the gusty storms or at least the stronger storms will be across the gulf coast. so texas through florida is the area we're watching today. this works farther east tomorrow. that means the far east gets in on this action. we do need the rain across this region, so it is beneficial in some of these spots, but it could interrupt of some plans you have outdoors for this region for your sunday. either way the heavy rain is going to be mainly focused for georgia and florida anywhere from an inch to 2 inches. that's why we're concerned about localized flooding. when it's all said and done for florida an inch again for that area. the good news we're not looking at severe weather, but we do

have a marginal risk. so we could see a couple rupbles of thunder anmaybe gusty winds associated with those along with damaging hail. it ranges from the panhandle of florida to portions of of texas so alexandria, new orleans, mobile. again, not a widespread outbreak and maybe an isolated tornado but again some thunderstorms. same story tomorrow for parts of georgia, alabama, and florida. we've got thos yes. we switch those clocks tomorrow. we are starting off clear and chilly. 37 in dublin, 36 in santa rosa, mountain view and san jose in those low 40s. it's going to be a gorgeous day. get outside. we're going to see lots of sunshine throughout the morning. the temperatures starting in the 40s. getting into the 60s by lunchtime, and maybe even some 70s sneak up in there in

the third csu campus to cut athletic programs. the school announced it's eliminating its swim and dive teams. cal poly's president points to budget cuts and a proposed settlement with the ncaa, which would result in a loss of at least $450,000 per year for athletic programs. it's the third school to make such cuts in recent weeks. on thursday, san francisco state announced three of its sports teams will be eliminated, citing the ongoing budget shortfall. and in january, as we've been reporting, sonoma state made the decision to cut its entire sports program. former vice president kamala harris will decide whether she'll run for california governor by the end of this summer. at least that's according to people who overheard her answer when asked that question at an oscars party last weekend. there has been speculation about whether harris will enter the 2026 race, as governor gavin newsom turns out,

against harassment. along with other universities, columbia was theo site of pro-palestinian protests during the october 7th attack and war in gaza. the measles outbreak along the border with texas and mexico is growing with more than 200 cases now confirmed and a second death link today the disease. new mexico officials say an unvaccinated adult who tested positive to measles has now died. that's after a 6-year-old in texas died last week, the nation's first measles death in a decade. officials say most of the people with measles are in the two states. they are unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status. the cdc said on friday it has now confirmed measles cases in 12 separate states. in the nba friday the denver nuggets nick l.a. yolkch notching the first ever 20-20,

as vta workers prepare to walk off the job on monday, just two days ago. the union that represents 1500 bus and light rail workers handed the vta board its intent to strike. the union says it's been negotiating with the vta since last august, and a deal has not been reached. vta says that they have offered a fair deal to workers. they say they are urging the union to go back to the bargaining table. if a deal is not reached. the strike is expected to begin at 12:01 a.m. monday morning. water quality improvements are coming to the east bay. earlier this week, the fremont city council approved the lake elizabeth water quality improvement pilot project. the goal is to reduce the likelihood of fish die off. that can happen during extreme heat. surface surface aerators and monitoring probes will be installed in one section of lake elizabeth that will improve oxygenation. it will help

hackman's pacemaker on february 18th, which authorities say means he was likely in the home for that time because of his alzheimer's perhaps didn't even know that she had died. >> he was in a very poor state of health, and he had significant heart disease, and i think ultimately that is what resulted in his -- in his death. >> reporter: i also asked whether that could have meant that he starved to death. authorities say he did not have any food in his system, but the autopsy didn't show signs of dehydration. as for their dog zena, who died in a crate, they do say it is possible she starved. right now authorities are still tryi to access some of the cellphone data to figure out who they may have last had contact with. but authorities say there's no indication that gene hackman tried to contact anybody in the days after his wife died, likely due to his advanced alzheimer's. >> such a terrible loss. liz, thanks. now to wall street and a

official resident photographer in '99. she snaps hundreds of photos a week, but only eight or nine usually make the show. >> stick around. >> reporter: serving as bumpers, the bookends to each commercial break. those photos sometimes they're only up for like 3 seconds. >> yeah. >> is that okay with you? >> no, it is not. but thankful for social media. now they can live somewhere else and of course in the book now. >> reporter: the book titled "the art of the snl portrait," the 272-page album bursting with a quarter century of creativity. they're all so different. some of them just look like something you'd see in a magazine cover. some of them are far more whimsical. what is it you're looking for? >> certainly a little whimsy. i love props. i love to re-create a masterpiece or album cover. that lightening strike through the camera, you see somebody really see them there. >> reporter: lightening

thanks for joining us on this saturday, march 8th. i'm kira klapper. another university is being hit by budget cuts. cal poly becomes the third csu campus to cut its athletic programs. the school announced it is eliminating its swim and dive teams. cal poly's president points to budget cuts and a proposed settlement with the ncaa, which would result in a loss of at least $450,000 per year for athletic programs. it's the third school to make such cuts in recent weeks. o thursday, san francisco state announced three of its sports teams will be eliminated, citing the ongoing budget shortfall.

and as we've been reporting in january, sonoma state made the decision to cut its entire sports program. former vice president kamala harris says she will decide whether she will run for california governor by the end of summer. this, according to people who overheard her answer when asked that question at an oscars party last weekend. there has been speculation about whether harris will enter the 2026 race as governor. newsom terms out, but doing so wou mean harris rules out a 2028 presidential run. in phone calls and at private gatherings, harris has told supporters she is, quote, staying in this fight. if harris does run for governor, she would be and wins. she would be the first black woman to be a governor in america. we're going to turn now to the microclimate forecast with cinthia pimentel. good morning. good morning everyone. on that topic of women, it is international women's day. so my celebrations go out to everyone, including myself and kira too.
